This was the worst lunch we had ever had. The coffee was like dishwater, the “crispy’ friend cod and haddock has a thin inside of grey which was supposed to be fish. The only thing good about it was the peas beside the bedraggled “salad”. Waste of £30 plus

Very expensive for average food. Before visiting saw a Cionis menu on line as follows: Grilled Italian Ham & Cheese sandwich. Freshly baked sour dough bread and french fried potatoes. Grilled pancetta, proscuitto & salami with mozzarella cheese £6. Have since found out Cionis in Penarth do not have menues online nor on their own website. So the ham and cheese tostie served here cost a staggering £7.25 for 2 basic budget white bread slices, a sliver of spread no sign of cheese as melted and standard ham. Fries would have cost extra. The limp lettuce accompanyment was left! We now appreciate why no menues for Penarth Cionis can be found on line as no one would pay those prices for very basic food.

£24.50 for 2x 2 poached eggs on 2 slices of toast with a spread of margarine and 2 small mugs of tea. I had unfortunately tapped my card before realising how much i paid. I queried the cost but they just shrugged. We won't go back.

Nice little caffe, great location, unfortunately poor customer service. We paid for 3 hot drinks and an ice cream, sitting outside, when I went back to ask for a cup of hot water, the rude gentleman at the till denied it saying “we don’t do hot water here” having a go to a member of the staff helping us. Very unprofessional.

My mum and I went to Cioni's on her birthday recently. We both chose cod and chips. The lunch was simple but hugely delicious, not a morsel left. Some places serve cod and chips the size of a whale with a ridiculous amount of potatoes, here it was served well proportioned with garden peas and side salad and also it was hot and fresh. Crispy batter on the fish and golden brown chips. The staff were also delightful. I am only sorry I didn't take a photo to add to this review.

Gave this place a try again after a few years break hoping it had improved....but no the coffees were not good quality and the room was filled with junk in the one corner. It is such a pity as this place could be a gold mine with its beautiful location. This venue really needs a fresh pair of eyes to help the menu and interior.

We were shocked by the price we have just paid for two at best mediocre sandwiches in very dry (stale) brown bread & a cone of chips and one coffee . The choice of sandwiches was very limited, the cone of chips quite obviously of a poor quality frozen variety. The only plus overall was that my coffee was very hot. The competition arriving next door will hopefully improve the standards of Cionis - these days you have to be much better than this and offer good quality produce which I certainly wouldn't mind paying for.

Such a rip off and poor wuality food. We paid just under. £40 whilst visiting the park with my grandson, thought we'd pop in for a bite to eat. 3 adults and a toddler. Ordered a pasty, kids meal, lasagne and toastie. The pasty was so overcooked in the microwave it made me feel ill. It took ages for the other 3 meals to come, so we didnt eat together. You'd think being next to the park it would reduce its prices and be more family friendly. Wont go there again.

We stopped there for a bite after a walk and soon wished we had walked on past. The chips we had tasted like they had been reheated, and probably cheap frozen chips at that. The sausages were dry and tasted like those cheap supermarket frozen ones. I was staggered at the price for food of such a low quality, no effort at all. I can't believe they've managed to hold on to this place in such a lovely spot - it needs somebody else.

It’s in a perfect position to exploit the unwary of which I was one. Latte and bacon butty £7.65..... which is extraordinary for what is effectively a cafe/shop. .... the ‘coffee’ tasted like half and half hot milk and water but was very hot and sported a lovely foam! The thin sliced bread wasn’t very fresh, spread with a minimal amount of butter restricted to the middle of each of the two slices. The 2 slices of bacon were dry, burnt at the edge and looked and tasted strange. Obviously re-heated and very unpleasant. No, I didn’t feel it worth complaining, I just won’t be tempted again.

Cheaper than cheap. I didn’t want to make a fuss in complaining whilst eating as would have thought others must have mentioned this before, so chips it was. As I was leaving the waitress asked me if everything was ok to which I provided my feedback. She seemed shocked and said we could have changed them! Just can’t believe they could even serve that In the first instance......surely the cafe should recognise this without me pointing it out as they simply look disgusting 🤢

Beware- NOT Dog friendly! They want to SELL Ice cream "For Dogs" (clever marketing ploy) , but will not cater for Dogs on very Hot days with regards to supplying water for them? A few old ice cream tubs are scattered about with rancid dirty water in them- If you ask for fresh water you will be turned down! The "friendly dog loving staff" will tell you to go to the public toilets near car park to get water.... A friend of mine when asked for some fresh water for her Dog, was told to "buy" a bottle from them! They need to remember that many of their customers are Dog walkers, who keep them in business during cold winter months! - Well well well, It would seem the "New Owners" never learnt much from the owner? Very disappointed with the service, had to "fight" for what I wanted to eat today and lost. They think this place is the Ritz! Its a naff hilltop Cafe! Drop the snooty attitudes, and you may get more customers. Was even subjected to sit and watch the original owner "slumped" over a table sleeping while we ate! This is obviously a "Family" business, as the "new owners" seem to have inherited the previous owners selfish attitude. Hopefully, they will also run this place into the ground- and someone decent will take it over.

After a lovely walk , what better than a nice cup of tea and a quick snack... Bowl of chips ? oh yes ... and some bread and butter to make a chip butty !! Oh no, that's not allowed. We went in , tried to order a toasted cheese and ham sandwich , but nope, they only sell cheese and ham sandwiches... not toasted ones, but I could have toasted cheese and tomato.... or untoasted cheese and ham !! After a discussion asking if I could pay a little extra for toasted ham and cheese... I was firmly told no ! So toasted cheese and tomato it had to be !! Next we tried to order a bowl of chips... ermmm nope ... they "have never" sold chips on their own !! Not true, we've had chips outside all summer but we must both be mistaken, they've "never" served chips on their own . Point of interest here... take a look at the menu board outside which shows a bowl of chips and a price. But don't argue with the lady , Kerry.... she knows differently. Then she said I could have a bowl of chips with the toasted sandwich , it would come on the same plate !! I asked could I have a separate bowl... NOPE!! Shush now, take the toastie and the chips I said to myself. Then I tried to get 2 pieces of bread and butter for making that old British staple, chip butty... No!!! No bread and butter, I was already being "allowed" chips with a toastie and only one extra is allowed. So cleverly asked for 2 slices of toast... yep that was okay... and I asked " could you not toast the bread though" ( I thought I had her at this one) ERmm.. no!!! you can have toast but you are not having bread was the reply !!! I said I'd pay the price of toast .... NOOO!!! No Bread!! So we sit down waiting for the toastie with a side of chips but no bread . There on the first table was the elderly owner... head in his hands, then his face planted on the table and he drooled slightly as he slept with his head on the table !! Hygiene ??? Is that really a good representation of the company.... Our food came, the server was very polite, clearly not been there long enough to learn the snappy nasty customer service attitude... she won't last long if she doesn't toughen up. She even asked if she could get us any condiments like salt , sugar etc . And she brought them back with a smile..... The tea is a lovely cuppa, always is ... but the rest of the attitude, not allowed to order what we wanted, eat what you are given and watch the owner drool and snore on the next table .. then wake, pick up his paper ( now with drool on it ) tuck it under his arm and disappear into the kitchen ..... that is just like the bread and butter.... Not on the menu. We didn't expect all that attitude , we won't be going back no matter how nice the tea is because I am not lining the pockets of a group who have not a care for their customers and have basically learned they are the only cafe there and your choice is ... .like it or lump it . Others were there complaining about the "jobs worth" attitude being delivered. Add to this we paid £17 plus for a toasted sandwich, chips ( no bread and butter ) 2 cups of tea and 2 jam welshcakes for the dog . If the owner needs a nap I suggest he go home for it ... or sit outside and drool ... its very off putting to see that whilst eating. Sorry for the long explanation... but oh my , this place was bad before, .... now its disgusting. Take the lease from them Vale Council and give it to someone who appreciates customers .

Several reviews on here are very disparaging, and this is unfair. We have been going here for years, and the staff, though sometimes rushed have always been polite. I found the experience quite pleasant. The setting and surroundings were fine even on a rainy day, the restaurant was not too overcrowded and the poached egg on toast I had was good enough. The hot chocolate and cake were also fine. There was a young waitress on hand should we need anything extra and the price were not particularly extravagant one way or the other really. There were one or two dogs inside which was not ideal when in the company of people who are uncomfortable around dogs but I would probably visit again.

We had the misfortune to visit Cioni’s at the same time as the last reviewer. It was a difficult day for us anyway as we had just collected my dad from a lifesaving visit to hospital, and were visiting my dying mother in a nearby care home together. We decided to visit Cioni’s for lunch, as we had moved away years ago and it was nice to see the familiar business still there. I met and talked to some lovely people in the queue for the counter, then the previous reviewer pushed in and started making a fuss about nothing. He seemed determined to cause a problem, he rambled aggressively and made very little sense. Something about asking for toast instead of bread with the soup costing a little extra. It was not £1 difference as said in his review, and much of the rest of his review was equally untrue. As we were were seated at the next table, we decided to move tables as they were very loud and upsetting. The staff made this move easy and seamless showing great sensitivity. The family’s loud and rude behaviour affected other customers too.Unfortunately even from the other side of the restaurant we could still hear him harangue the waitress, I took my daughter out to play, but they continued their appalling behaviour. Laughing and sneering and posting their review. We felt particularly sorry for the two children with them, as it was very sad to see a grown man setting such an awful example of bullying, entitled behaviour. The old man with them initially joined in, but started to look embarrassed when it was obvious that other customers had noticed their rude and obnoxious behaviour. We were amazed by the grace of the waitress, no one should have to put up with such behaviour. The cafe would have been perfectly within its rights to have called the police to have them removed. As I think you will understand we have other things on our minds, but as a family we decided that we all wanted to look for their dishonest review and post our correction. In short Cioni’s is a lovely place, with kind and amazingly patient staff. The previous reviewer and family seemed to enjoy bullying the cafe owner and staff, we felt very sorry for people who have such small lives that this is what makes them happy.Oh, and the cafe owner can sit wherever he likes, It’s his cafe The deserts looked amazing, sadly we couldn’t stay.

We have been coming here as a family for many years. Unfortunately, the service has been deteriorating (not that it had a peak) and now we will have no alternative but to eat elsewhere. Do not recommend. Would give 0 stars if I could. The manager and staff were rude and condescending (somewhat disparate considering they were wearing Christmas jumpers!) and everything was too much trouble, culminating in being told that to have my bread toasted with my soup (which comes with it) would be an extra £1 per person. Even then, and despite not being busy, they brought the bread after the tepid soup had been finished. Very disappointing. Hopefully the manager is more successful watching his horse racing on the TV (and taking up a table) so that he can retire and the place can be put under new management. Until then, avoid unless you enjoy being berated by sneering and disrespectful employees.

I took my 20month old granddaughter to the cliff top park last Wednesday. We stayed an hour and were the only ones there, probably due to the inclement weather. We went into the cafe to buy an ice cream. There were two customers sitting side by side watching the rugby. No table was occupied.I politely checked that it was ok for her to sit in and eat her ‘mini milk’ and was told no, that was not permitted. She could if I bought a coffee. I looked horrified and asked if he was being serious. I was told that in the summer, if people sat inside to eat an ice cream, there would be nowhere for people to eat their meals.I pointed out that it was October and the cafe was completely empty. It was the rule apparently and she’d have to sit and eat it on a damp, windy bench outside.Just awful customer service. Will NOT be giving them my custom ever again.

One rather gritty tasting Americano, and the smallest tasteless hot chocolate I've ever had. The privalidge cost 5.60. I was sat slightly away at right angles from a table with my beloved small pooch on my lap and was rather abruptly told to put my dog down on the floor away from the table! I was slightly bemused considering the table obviously hadn't been wiped down for some time seeing as there was rubbish and left overs on the table from previous visitors. We obviously won't visit again, very unfriendly, with double standards.

There was only 1 person taking orders and a long queue. We had to take our own cutlery and I was put off when a staff member topped up the cutlery boxes and was holding the forks by the prongs end! I did wipe them before use. However a cheap and cheerful place to go with a kids' playground outside. Loos very clean.

Just had a truly terrible experience at this place. Went as a family for lunch as my mother-in-law was visiting. As an increasingly-frail and not very hungry 80 year-old, she decided she wanted the fish fingers and chips from the children’s part of the menu as it would be small. My sister-in-law opted for the same as she’s had a gastric bypass so eats very little, full-stop. On ordering we were told that unless the people were 12 or under they couldn’t order from that part of the menu. Being as generous as I can, it does say ‘for under-12s’ on that bit of the menu, but when explaining our situation I felt sure they could accommodate this request. No such luck. We were told it was unmovable, especially as they were busy. So, if we had two 12 year-olds with us it would have been fine, but for an 80 year-old and someone with no stomach it was too busy. I just can’t understand how, in a service industry, you can be so inflexible, especially when the thing being requested is on the menu. Suffice to say, we left, and didn’t order the three other £10 a-head meals we were going to get, costing them a sale of about £40 for being so inflexible. I was very angry and disappointed, but after coming on here and seeing the overwhelming amount of 1 star reviews, I can at least take solace from the fact that they seem to treat a disproportionate number of the customers that go in with the same contempt. We won’t be going back.

Visited here again today with my friend & our toddlers. We were sat outside the boys eating their ice creams. It was 3:30pm, what looked like the owner came out & put away the table & chairs that we were sat on. It was so rude, we were made to feel very unwelcome. In a prime location we did not expect this, it’s such a shame as this cafe should be fantastic! I am yet to meet anyone that has a good word to say about this place. It’s a sunny July afternoon surely they were not closing this early, they would miss all the afternoon visitors too! So annoying & very disappointing!

My family and I visited Cioni's today and I'm still in shock at how rude and aggressive the owner was. Our group bought a variety of ice creams, drinks and snacks then we Sat down in the public shelter. Immediately the owner came and shouted "I close this now!". When I stood to ask if we could sit for a few minutes to eat he pulled the chair away from me and started pulling the shutters down. I don't understand why someone would be so rude to polite and paying customers. My Nan is 86 and has severe dementia, the noise terrified her and also unnerved my toddler. Not to mention it was very difficult to manoeuvre the wheelchair out of the tiny gap left open. When asked if he could leave the shutters for one minute while we leave he ignored the question, then the obviously Italian man shouted "I'm Irish, you hurry!"????

Was going to buy some sandwiches there before walking down into Penarth but changed my mind as there was a bit of a queue. After coming back my son wanted to play in the playground so we called in to buy a take out drink. I asked for a hot chocolate for my son and a hot water and milk for myself as I do not drink tea or coffee. The lady serving said I will charge you for a tea! I have had this said to me before, usually because they don't know what to charge me but not very often and they always put the teabag on the side. However this was not even offered. The drinks were served in tiny polystyrene cups, the type you get curry sauce in at a takeaway and I was charged nearly £5 for them and a chuppah chups lolly. I then asked if they had any sweeteners and the lady pressed one sweetener into my cup. I said could I have more and she pressed it again. I said I have a sweet tooth and she said "three?!" I bit my tongue as I wanted to say "yes three and give me my teabag!". I am so glad that we did not buy sandwiches there as there are so many better places to get drink or food on the promenade. I wish I'd read the reviews on here before thinking about going there. Avoid unless you like being fleeced.

Ordered a takeaway coffee and a Chelsea bun. Coffee was the smallest I've ever had in recent years ( a small old fashioned polystyrene cup) and only warm at a cost of £2.20, very poor value. They need to wake up and see how modern cafe's serve takeaway coffee much better value on Penath pier.

As far away from Italian home cooking as you can possibly get. (Which is a cruel betrayal of South Wales's rich Italian heritage.) My Fiorentina pizza consisted of blisters of burnt Mozzarella, amidst tiny bits of what may have been ham or mushroom (but I really couldn't be sure). When it came to desert, we were "not allowed" to order ice cream cones because we were "sitting inside". Instead, we had to order (a tiny portion of) ice cream in a bowl for which we were charged twice as much. And what about the prehistoric queue in which you had to wait to order! Took me back to the days when pesky customers were expected to know their place. YUCH!

Bien. No me puedo quejar de la comida. Pero yo estaba pidiendo comida para mí y mi hija. Yo quería algo que no está en el menú de sandwich. Un blt o bacon lechuga y tomate. Ahora no sandwiches bacon y ensalada.

Great food at a great price with great service - nothing snotty or high class - honest to goodness grub! Why only four stars then? - could do with a smarten up - but apart from that it is amazing!

Don't often get to spend lunch together as we both work. Decided to treat ourselves so headed to Cioni's on clifftop. Husband chose a hot snack from menu, I decided on a plate of chips - also on menu at £2.50. Was informed I couldn't have 'just chips' as chips can only be sold as an 'extra' (??). As husband was hungry & unaware of what was going on at the till, I ordered a cake instead (I would have left if I'd been alone)!! I'm still baffled at the fact chips are shown menu but cannot be purchased. I won't visit again. They're happy to sell chips at the kiosk in summer.

Although each of the world’s countries would like to dispute this fact, we Welsh know the truth; the best food in the World is made in Wales. The best food in Wales is made in Penarth, and the best food in Penarth, some say, is served by a lovely young lady.. However...The chips were frozen, the coke was flat, and the service was slower than a slug. Hopefully this review opens the eyes of the staff who took interest in my needs, and they also rushed my din dins.

Overlooking the sea at Penarth this restaurant is dismal, grubby, and rooted in some far off time when customers didn't really matter. Its position makes it a 'popular' place for a coffee and it has a captive audience. I visited with my family and found the food just edible, the service offhand and the toilet facilities grim. Will be taking a packed lunch next time I'm in the vicinity.

I wish I had read the reviews before we went. Doesn't look good on the outside but it was the only place to have a coffee in that area that we could find. Inside is no better like being in a time warp from the 1960's and the coffee tasted like it too. we were with family and none of us enjoyed the drinks, the snack or the attitude - such a shame because it has so much potential in the right hands, being in a great location with free parking it could be a destination to chill out with a great coffee, good food and real friends. But as it stands - never again!

Half way through eating my pizza I was horrified to discover a meal worm on my pizza (it was cooked, not alive). I took my plate to the bar and a pleasant young lady took it into the kitchen for analysis. Out came quite an abrupt man who I assume is the owner and told me it was mozzarella cheese and it was fine to continue eating. I tried to inform him it was a meal worm but he was having none of it. My wife had got half way through her roast dinner but she could not face the rest of her meal after this grim discovery in case she also had some nasty surprise in her food. We duly left our food and walked out. I did begin to think perhaps it wasn't what I assumed but having read some of the Tripadvisor reviews I am not so surprised.

Surprised at some of the negative reviews. Have eaten here a number of times lately ( lunches ) and have always received excellent service. Always been made welcome , drinks served promptly and any queries about the food promptly answered or explained. The food has always been well cooked and well presented. Special mention for their Prawn and Chorizo Linguine, one of the tastiest I have eaten, our party will certainly keep returning. Lovely home brewed pint available. Well done to all the staff.

Good atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff. The food wasn't the best sizzler I've had but not entirely the worst neither. Took a while to come out. The fish and chips was the best out of the meals we had.

What a terrible experience from start to finish! Firstly we ordered drinks that sat on the bar getting warm for 20min before being served to us! We ordered food which took ages to come 50 min to be exact and it wasn’t busy! Two meals were served then we waited another 10 min for the other two meals to be served. The presentation of the food is awful it comes and doesn’t look at all appealing. Asked for mayo, ketchup and vinegar 10 min later we were still waiting and had to ask again. Southern fried chick burger was almost burnt so overcooked the chicken was dry! Steak and ale pie pastry do hard it was difficult to cut. Very tasteless and gravy like water. Fries were frozen bag fries that looked anemic and were soft and soggy. We weren’t asked at all if we wanted more drinks! Ordered side of 8 onion rings were served 3. Would I eat here again NEVER! Don’t listen to the good reviews this place is terrible both service and food!
