The food and service at Chutney's were fabulous. The only reason it's not a 5/5 rating is that the restaurant lacks a bit of ambience, which could be easily rectified. The popadums we had to start came with three delicious chutneys and an onion salad. Because I wasn't feeling great we shared a main course with a couple of breads, there was no problem with that at all, they graciously brought two plates and served the main between us without fuss. We were unsure about going to Chutney's as the recent reviews have been a bit Marmite, and we were particularly concerned about the food hygiene rating that someone mentioned back in October 2023 - which further research shows is now 4/5 (inspection 16th November 2023) . We were really pleased that we did go though, really nice people, really good food.

A great value curry house in the heart of Oxford. Very friendly service and decent food. I had a chicken madras which was spot on, just the right heat!!

Visited for the first time in about 15 years and was disappointed. The main problem was the service. We were sat upstairs and basically seemed forgotten about. Nobody asked if we wanted more drinks, and getting the bill took ages. Food was average. My jalfrezi was good, but my friend’s korma was quite odd (another friend tried it and said it tasted like custard). I’ll probably give it another 15 years until my next visit!

Came here for a late supper last Saturday with friends, haven’t been here for years and was pleasantly surprised how good the food was. Not sure exactly what we eat as we just asked for a selection of dishes for 5 people. The standard of food was good and very tasty and think we all agreed we would go back.

This restaurant has a very large menu. Thr food is very good and reasonably priced. If you do eat here ignore the decor. The premises could do with a makeover.

Great experience. Very helpful and friendly wait staff. Asked if they could add additional spice to one of our orders and they were kind enought to oblige. Great flavor and quality meat. Garlic nan could have used more garlic, but overall, we all left very satisfied and would come back again.

Great food, as per previous visits, but service all but non-existent! I arrived before my friend and was offered a choice of tables - so far, so good. I was offered a drink. No low/zero alcohol beers so I asked for a lemonade. My friend arrived 10 minutes later and took his seat. Nobody came to offer him a drink or deliver mine. As we were next to the bar, we attracted attention and managed to order food and drinks. Food service was fine, but we sat with empty glasses after our plates had been taken, yet nobody came. We went to bar and managed to pay a chap who was sitting with his feet up. Have been a few times before but unlikely to return!

Visited here two weeks ago. The food was delicious and authentic. We had poppadoms to start. I had a paneer madras and my wife had a chicken korma with a peshwari nan and rice between us. The service was excellent and even with drinks the price was reasonable. It's not the plushest of restaurants but don't let that put you off. We can't wait to go there again when we take our daughter back to Uni in January.

We had a table of 10, everyone said the food was tasty and enjoyable, plenty of choice on menu.Only downside was seats were hard and fitting 10 people on 4 small tables with amount of food ordered was tight, other than that everyone enjoyed it and we will use again on our next trip to Oxford.

I have been before. It's was really good. But has dropped it's hygiene Standards a lot. Everything was sticky. Handles bannisters menus. The chairs awful a 1mm of foam the tables wonky of hell. The serving areas were filthy. We left.

The food tasted fine no complaints. Its probably the best food you can find in Oxford that is indian. Service was very good and things happened quickly. The staff was very accomodating for special requests.

Well, the food was good overall. In fairness, we didn’t have a reservation and we’re put upstairs. That’s where the good ratings end, I’m afraid. The upstairs environment was not very clean, run down and not at all welcoming with chairs stacked randomly in the corners. It was impossible to get further service with no waiters available and no one asked if we wanted anything else. We could not return and I’m afraid, I could not recommend. Perhaps, had we have been seated downstairs, the review would have been different.

Definitely one of the best curries we have ever had. Visited many times over recent years. Never disappointed and always a treat. Starters and mains superb. Great friendly service. Thank you.

We chose here as a last minute decision on a Friday night in Oxford. We were a little apprehensive as it’s not have the lavish decor you would expect from an Indian restaurant. However clearly they put all their money into their fantastic food. We have had a lot of curry in our lifetime and this place was one of the best. So much so my boyfriend hasn’t shut up about this place since and we have already planned our next visit!!

Wow - just wow. This was the best curry I have ever had, and have had some good ones. I am not vegetarian but could quite happily wade my way through all the vegetarian curries here and not miss the meet. The vegetable side dishes I had were so tasty. The staff were really nice and helpful as well

Fuimos a Chutneys para una comida de trabajo y nos sorprendió el terrible servicio. No queriendo discutir y simplemente queriendo irnos en este punto, terminamos pagando el precio completo.También a tener en cuenta, el servicio era muy pobre. Todo el personal vestía muy informalmente y sudaban mucho por el calor sofocante. La comida y el servicio fue excelente. Nada era demasiado problema. El plato de comida, plato principal, arroz, guarnición y naan 26. 95 e incluso nos dio una ronda de bebidas.

Excellent food! We all thought our meal was great. The restaurant was buzzing and filling up quickly - we booked for 6.15pm. The restaurant itself could do with a bit of tidying up/modification perhaps.

Visited on the 28th December, called in and had a curry plus a couple of drinks each. Ordered our food it was served nice and hot and quick, the colour of the curry was amazing also the flavour. The staff were efficient and pleasant. Would definitely recommend!

Very un-prepossessing looking place - bit scruffy and canteen-like - but don’t be put off by the appearance. We arrived at 10.30 on Friday night 2 weeks before Christmas - a party of about 30 blokes were occupying most of the space, but the very friendly manager found us a table with just a few minutes wait.

Went in at 10 o clock, table of 6. Good food and reasonable drinks. We split the bill and paid £22 for popadoms, pint, rice and main each. Also included service. Not one for a high end, expensive meal but more for a quick curry with a big group of people. Would go back again.

Always made to feel welcome at this Oxford institution. Lamb Madras was the standout for me, Sag Aloo pushing it close, but others also praised the lamb biryani. Warm and welcoming staff. Highly recommended.

I love this place. Lively and friendly, with delicious food. If you're after a quiet candlelit soiree with the girlfriend it's not for you. Bit if you're partying with friends i can think of nowhere better. Great atmosphere and banter. The good never disappoints.

Appalling attitude from staff especially the manager - rude - unwelcoming for a birthday party - food average and overpriced- never again

Although the food was nice enough, I was put off by the scruffy decor, very sticky handrails on the stairs, greasy, slippery floors, and the toilets were not so great either, probably because there's only one ladies and one mens, so the men use the ladies and vice versa. It did make me worry about the cleanliness of the kitchen. I think this is the only reasonably priced Indian restaurant in the city centre, and they always appear to be busy at the weekend, so maybe they aren't too worried about appearance/cleanliness.

Salimos a comer comida india regularmente y nos encanta por las especias. Very very terrible restaurant i came across in oxford. The staff was highly rude especially the manager. They don’t mention prices of food items separately in the bill and the reason manager told us was that he has no time. He says we can’t make all customers happy there are exceptions like 1 out of 100. Ruined our evening by saying this and i think they should also give free food to that 1 customer. Not at all value for money, very expensive food not worth it. Food taste is also edible not at all good. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Chutney's is my favourite Indian restaurant, and I always enjoy my rare visits. Food is so delicious! Ambiance not so great, but the food more than makes up for any lack in that department.

Éramos un grupo de 4 para una comida y probamos Chutneys después de escuchar buenas críticas. La mesa y las sillas son muy básicas y las paredes estaban marcadas y necesitaban decoración. Los cubiertos de la mesa no coincidían. El restaurante estaba bastante ocupado y no tuvimos que esperar demasiado para nuestra comida. Comenzamos con poppadoms y encurtidos, que teníamos aproximadamente 10 mitades y una bandeja de encurtidos entre los 4. Luego tuvimos entrantes y platos principales. La comida era muy buena y porciones bastante grandes. Cuando llegó la factura, no era una factura detallada, sino que se dividía en bebidas y alimentos, lo que dificultaba ver que solo nos habían cobrado por lo que teníamos. Nos cobraron 8. 80 para los poppadoms, un poco excesivo, así que pregunté esto con un camarero. Inmediatamente nos rodearon 3 camareros (un poco intimidante) y nos dijeron que eran 2. 20 por persona. Dijimos que el menú no decía eso y la mesa de al lado tenía lo mismo que nosotros y solo había 2 de ellos, uno de los camareros dijo que tendrían menos poppadoms ya que generalmente los comensales reciben 3 poppadoms cada uno con recargas gratis. Dijimos que no teníamos 3 cada uno ni nos dijeron que podríamos tener más encurtidos o papas fritas como parte del precio. Nos ofrecieron 2. 20 de descuento en nuestra factura, pero dijo que no, dejar la factura como estaba. Creo que los clientes tienen derecho a consultar si sienten la necesidad, sin que se sientan mal. Aunque la comida era buena, por el servicio al cliente y el sistema de facturación no volveríamos.

Die freundlichen Mitarbeiter erklärten geduldig die sehr reichhaltige Speisekarte, und was dann auf den Tisch kam, übertraf wirklich alles, was ich bis dahin indisch gegessen hatte! "Korai Lamb", spicy, eine riesige Portion Lamm im gusseisernen Topf, heiß bis zum letzten Löffel, wunderbare Sauce mit Zwiebeln, Tomate, Pfefferschoten - köstlich!! Dazu noch ein geradezu sensationelles Preisverhältnis: Vorspeise, Nan, zwei Hauptgerichte, Wein und Bier für 41 Pfund. Die Lage mitten im Zentrum tut ein Übriges dazu. Eine unbedingte Empfehlung!

Escondido en una calle lateral en el centro de Oxford. Parece un poco básico por fuera y por dentro, pero la comida es excelente. Personal amable y servicial y servicio rápido. El menú tiene una amplia selección para elegir. Las porciones son generosas. Los precios son buenos. Volveríamos otra vez la próxima vez que vayamos a Oxford.

Large menu to choose from. Very nice location (accessible + quiet). Welcoming staff. Hence: I have been three times to Chutney's, every time with guests. We have all enjoyed it. I strongly recommend a glass of mango juice to go with your curry!

This was without doubt the worst Indian meal I've ever had. My okra was floating in orange coloured fat. Cheese nun had very few bits of dry cheese on it. It's difficult to go wrong with Mattar panir but even that was inedible.

We ate here because Indian food is usually the best for gluten free options. The staff were very welcoming and the menu had a good variety - enough to make choosing a dish difficult. Once we had chosen we were not disappointed. The food was excellent and very tasty. Service was good throughout and despite the restaurant being busy we didn't have to wait too long for our meal. The price was very reasonable as well, especially given the quality of the food. Overall excellent. We shall certainly go again next time we stay in Oxford.

Get the feeling this place is a bit of an Oxford institution. Pictures on the wall attest to visits from American presidents to Strictly judges. Neither I’m sure had to wait 90 minutes for their main course without a hint of apology. The noise in there was deafening too. Full of student types loving the sound of their very loud voices. Food was good though and a bit different from your typical Indian. Might have been ok at a less busy time.

Having read reviews, my wife and I decided to give this restaurant a try and we were not disappointed. We arrived at 5.30 pm just as it was opening and by the time we left people were queuing for tables ..... never a bad sign!

Really enjoyed our first visit, which certainly won’t be our last, to this restaurant which is slightly hidden away. Friendly service and a pleasant atmosphere. The food was perfect - we had a lamb balti and chicken korai, both medium strength. The balti was a bit spicier. Good sized portions full of meat.

Does anyone rememeber how curry used to taste 15 years ago! Well I park by here on a regular basis and the smell brought me back to my childhood! Only 1 thing I found bad was the price of 3 poppadoms that came to £4.40. Its not your average Indian its defiently a cut above the rest! Thanks for having us and will be back again soon!

Fantastic food, atmosphere, and service. Last summer, Waseem went the extra mile for us--when our order arrived and wasn't what we expected, he quickly returned it and brought a new menu item at no extra fee. We truly appreciated his gracious and accommodating attitude and friendly service. Looking forward to an opportunity to return to Oxford and a night at Chutney's.

Dopo aver scelto il menù l'attesa per i piatti è stata un po lunga, ma ben ripagata: il gusto e i sapori indiani sono ben assaporabili nelle pietanze servite e il prezzo è veramente competitivo.

El Sr. Azram y su personal en Chutneys fueron excelentes. La comida era increíble y abundante. 8 personas todas con gustos diferentes, todo salió fresco y en abundancia. Incluso nos dieron platos extra que era una ventaja. Definitivamente regresaré

This restaurant is a big recommendation! The selection is huge, the prizes affordable, the food delicious and the service very quick and friendly.

Intenté esto después de un espectáculo en el New Theatre y no podría haber encontrado un lugar mejor. Este es el mejor curry que hemos comido en mucho tiempo. Desde los popadons hasta las increíbles comidas principales. Toda la comida era increíble Sabores donde verdaderamente excelente y la elección en el menú era excelente. La próxima vez que estemos en Oxford volveremos aquí. Vale la pena una visita si te gusta su curry.

It was nice to find Dosa available and tasted better the Dosa park. The food was great and well priced. Service was efficient.

We were going to the theatre and went to Chutneys for a pre theatre food and we were not disappointed. The service was fab and the food delicious one of the best Lamb Bhunas we have ever tasted. The staff are lovely and very helpful. If you are in Oxford and you like Indian Chutneys is definitely one to visit.

We had the loveliest meal here! The food was great, and the service was incredible, the friendliest hosts!! I visited with my family for my Mum’s birthday which I mentioned this in my booking as we needed to be out the restaurant by 8.30 for the cinema. As we were leaving we were given a free bottle of wine as a birthday gift which was just so unexpected and my mum was thrilled! As we left the cinema and walked to the bus stop we saw the staff giving away the left overs to homeless people down the high street. Absolutely wonderful human beings and we had the best evening! Highly recommend!
