Popped in one lunchtime to check it out & book a table for the evening however weren’t impressed with the reception despite there only being two other people in. We followed three other people in with their dogs who also waited as we did but there was no one behind the bar although there was a man talking to the couple at a table. No communication came from this person at all so we all walked out! The atmosphere was somewhat depressing!

My wife & i called into the Church Inn several times, with friends, during a 2wk holiday in July... The staff & locals were friendly & welcoming and the decor goes back to oldern times in this Grade II listed building... Great food & drink are the main attraction that keeps this pub popular to both tourists & locals... Food-wise during our holiday we enjoyed the curry dish, cauliflower cheese, ribs, baked potatoes, & many more - all top quality, delicious home made meals... The pub also offers every drink you could wish, my favourite was the Jail real ale... If in the area this traditional inn is well worth a visit & highly recommended!

Wonderful to return to a favourite pub! Familiar faces and excellent food. This is no vulgar bistro catering for the brash, but a traditional country pub beloved by locals, the gentry and clergy, and well-mannered visitors. Highly recommended.

I can honestly say that I have never felt such hostility from a barman. My family went there for dinner as we were staying in Stoke Gabriel. Food was mediocre at best and the way we were made to feel by a certain member of staff was shocking. He knew we were not local and made us feel quite intimidated the entire time we were there. However, you can easily spot the locals as it was like a different person when serving them. The bar maid on the other hand was lovely and gave us a token to use to get out of the car park- which if you are not local you are not welcome to use (at least, that’s how he made us feel!!) you couldn’t pay me to go back there!!!

Roni and I went here for a quick drink and ended up going back for most of our holiday. First of all the pub is as friendly to dogs as they are to us. Our wee man had a bit of a pant on and was served with a cold bowl of water and dog treats. As Roni is disabled we have to be careful where we go, but the landlady and staff could not have been more helpful. We ordered our drinks and asked for the menu. Roni had forgotten her glasses and yet again help was at hand with a box of reading glasses from behind the bar. The wine is of a very high quality and the beer is beautifully kept. Our food arrived very quickly, all home cooked and piping hot. All of our food was to the highest standard with beautiful ingredients. We were so impressed we were back the next day for our meal. Steak and Kidney pie was fantastic full to the brim with meat and the chilli Roni had was of the same amazing standard. This is a fantastic pub with great people and staff, if it was where we lived it would be our local make no mistake. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

Traditional country pub with a warm welcome. Non of your modern building or decor to try and make it look old this is full of character and charm. Well kept ale, I had one or two, good range of other drinks to suit everyone. We decided to have food and again, it's good honest hearty grub and good portions too. I had a homemade lasagne with chips, carrot and peas, while the boss had gammon, egg and chips with peas. Plates emptied so that is testament to the taste. Bar staff and cook all very welcoming, can't fault it. Definitely be back.

We managed to park outside the door. The pub is ancient 1132, with a phenomenal history. We were warmly welcomed, and nothing was too much trouble. There was an extensive menu, and within the folder was a truly informative history of the pub. Fascinating. (Stocks outside the door, ancient horse brass, a bell pull called Sally, it was just magical.). The food was incredible, my husband had the best steak and kidney pie he has ever had, my friend had a platter (and my goodness it was....a huge platter) of prawns, a fantastic salad which included sliced apple and a slice of orange, a hunk of bread and plenty of butter. I ordered the House Specialty toasted sandwich, wow, was it good, cheese, ham, pineapple, onion, with a delicious salad garnish. Very, very sadly, I could only eat half, but truly it was the nicest toasted sandwich I have ever had......the staff were so welcoming and friendly as were the other guests, it was such a friendly, happy atmosphere, I only wish we lived nearer. Thank you to the Landlord and his staff.

The bitter was perfect, asked the bar staff for suggestion of a strong one and she came across to us having changed the barrel.Doombar.Delicious.Very full with couples and family, only about ten tables and several were reserved but we managed to find a little table in the corner. We were quickly served...my husband had the soup of the day:tomato and basil which he really enjoyed, thick chunk of bread with it. Then he had the special which was gammon and pineapple plus an egg....not a fussy meal but very very tasty. My crab salad was superb. Loaded with both red and plenty of white meat and a huge salad. I can’t cope with brown bread but it was quickly replaced with white. Very friendly place and folk.Down to earth and very good pub food.

A fabulously historic and characterful inn but...... I feel this place has much room for improvement; for instance, service very slow (had to be reminded we were there) and milk served with tea and coffee is of the UHT-in-tiny-plastic-containers variety. Visited on recommendation so whilst in the area decided to try it out. This is a typical little village pub, it has a small bar area and a lounge part where they serve food. The staff were very friendly and helpful, we had the steak and ale pie with puff pastry this came with your choice of potato I.e chips, mash and either veg or salad, it was obviously evident from the taste it was homemade and we demolished it in no time, nice tasting food and decent size portion. The only downside is to get to the ladies loo you have to go outside the pub and go up a flight of stairs, not great and certainly not good if you have mobility problems, however I would certainly go back again when I'm in the area next.

Currently the whole pub is lit by utility 2D compact fluorescent hard white light fittings. Also the fire was not lit and the tables have a modern high gloss finish. Just had a long awaited visit to the Church House Inn and was much looking forward to it. It turned out to be a disappointing experience. The menu was limited but you accept that as it is a small place. We had a table for 2 next to the "dead cat" which was right on top of another couple. This would be acceptable had the place been full but it wasn't. The meal was only OK in my opinion but my partner enjoyed his chicken mushroom and leek pie. We ordered pudding, my partners treacle sponge pudding came out as sticky toffee, so they rectified that. My chocolate chip pudding had no chocolate chips in it and wasn't very nice. When we went to the bar to pay the bill, I just mentioned the lack of chocolate chip so the Landlord asked the lady that had just arrived out of the kitchen who said that's how they come in, as chocolate chip, so we said well it should be advertised as chocolate sponge to which she got quite stroppy and said give her her money back. Charming!! Needless to say we wouldn't be in any rush to go back. A lovely looking little place though, very quaint.

Went to the church house for an evening meal with another couple during May half term. Even though it was busy they were able to fit us in. Reasonably priced home cooked food and a nice selection of ales and ciders. Set in the picturesque village of stoke Gabriel.

Gisteren wat gedronken bij de pub. Wat een leuke idyllische pub. Gelegen in een leuk dorp! Vriendelijk personeel. Wij hebben daar nog niets gegeten, dit gaan we nog doen.

Great late lunch with family, biggest haddock I have ever seen. Had that locally caught ling, calamri and my wife just cheesy chips. All with crispy fresh batter, chips golden but soft inside. Even cheesy chips were top, 1/2 chips, then cheese, more chips and topping of more cheese. All top quality, even the ice cream and with nice pints of Otter, bitter & ale on tap. Great way to end off long walk on the beach. You won’t be disappointed..

Held an event for 50 people there, and honestly, it couldnt have gone better. The staff were amazing - incredibly helpful. The venue was perfect. Will be returning lots!

I loved this pub. We walked from Salcombe and it was well worth it (don't worry, you can drive there too). It had the feel of a genuine pub with some good beers that happened to do great food also. I had possibly the best burger I have had in a long time and my wife had a fantastic steak sandwich. Both were freshly prepared scratch. They have vegan options too. I notice some negative reviews, mostly due to poor service. We arrived at 12 noon on a weekday in October. Even so, the place was full by the time we left, so it is clearly a popular place. The service we experienced was without fault. I hope our experience is the norm.

We stayed 3 nights, Fri Sat & Sun, very comfortable well furnished room, ensuite, with breakfast (diy) available in little kitchen down the hall. Wonderful old world inn, great bar, and bar food til 8.30 (lunchtime til 5 on Sunday, no evening meal). Very friendly and helpful staff, and wonderful location in the wilds of Dartmoor.

We stopped off for dinner after a busy day out, this was on the off chance as we were passing, we found Really tasty home cooked food, good potion sizes and value for money. Would recommend
