Went for dinner but found that there was a Wake going on at the pub. Reassured by bar staff that we weren’t in the way and it was business as usual. Ordered drinks and food at the bar before we realised that the wake attendees were getting more and more drunk; shouting, shrieking, banging the table, swearing and making everyone’s evening quite awful. We thought the manager, who was adding to the cacophony by regularly throwing wine bottles into a bin, would intervene, but it appeared his colleague was actually sitting with the loudest of the drunken mourners. The food arrived. Tepid, tasteless, expensive fish on a cold plate- Matching the temperature of the pub ( we kept our coats on) We ate and left as quickly as possible, never to return. I have told as many friends as I can to avoid this absolutely dreadful place.

Sadly a very disappointing meal. My family and I travelled almost an hour to the Cholmondeley Arms to celebrate a birthday dinner. Not only do you have to order your food and drinks at the bar, the starters we ordered took 50 minutes to arrive. On top of this, we had ordered 2 tea pots (at the bar) to have with the birthday cake. By the time the waitress brought over the tea, everyone had already finished their cake which was less than ideal. Such a shame for such an expensive meal.

MORE AT TripAdvisor
We booked the Cholmondley Arms for Mothers Day due to its many accolades and we've often driven past. It's a fair distance for us but happy to do the 30 min drive to see what all the fuss was about. We had a table for four of us booked for 3 o'clock for myself, my wife and our two children. We were shown to the table which had only three seats and so we asked for a fourth seat for my son but the lady walked off so he went and found his own seat. We were not asked if we had been before, we weren't told whether there was a wait on food or whether there were any unavailable dishes. We weren't even wished Happy Mothers Day. We sat at the table for 25 minutes and no one came over to take our order so I went to the bar to enquire and was told it's order at the bar. We should have been told this when we arrived as in a restaruant where you have booked a table and have to wait to be seated you would expect table service! I went through our order to be told that two of our selected dishes were unavailable. Again, we should have been told this when seated or at the very least when presented with the menus. food order in at 3.25. By ten past four, we finally received our starters which were average. We then sat with dirty plates on our table until around 5pm - almost an hour after starters had been served before my wife, running out of patience went to ask where our food was. The lady she spoke with said she would go and find out from the kitchen. The same lady was then speaking with the table next to us, explaining where their food was but the guests looked very confused so we said excuse me, it was us who enquired about our food. The response was "if you don't mind, Im dealing with this customer thank you very much!!" snapped at us. We are now at 5.15 and I said to my wife should we just go, the kids are losing patience, the staff are rude and the starters weren't anything exceptional. We were about to leave when the main courses finally arrived. NO apology. My wife explained to the server how the other lady had snapped at her and how rude she was and the response was "well you have to appreciate it is mothers day". We then said we have been here over two hours and not had a main course yet - to which the lady replied well you didnt put your food order in until 3.25.....no we didnt, because no one told us it wasnt table service!!! Whether its mothers day or not, there is a level of expectation when it comes to service. And actually, the fact that its a special occasion you would expect the team to be even more attentive, not less so. Whether it is mothers day or not, thats no excuse for the staff being rude to us and failing to communicate, as well as a two hour wait for food. Just not acceptable. There were at least three large tables that were empty around us; it's not like the restaurant was fully booked and we actually remarked on how quiet it was. We witnessed the table next to us being served dessert and then being told they had to vacate the table as their slot was almost up - im not surprised they used their whole 3 hour slot when the service is as slow as it was. the food was distincly average. I ordered the chicken curry with jasmine rice and naan. The rice was boil in the bag yellow rice, not jasmine, and the curry could easily have come from a jar, no flavour and not much depth. The naan was one of those mini ones you get in a pack of four at Tesco. My wife had the fish and chips which was bland and very average. We actually went elsewhere for dessert and coffee as we couldnt sit any longer. My advice would be dont waste your time and money coming here.

I really didn’t want to write this review, but I I love the Cholmondeley Arms and am hoping that management will take note of some of the less than positive reviews and return the Chum to it’s former glory. In brief, starting with the positives, we were warmly welcomed on arrival , the policy of no bookings is a little disconcerting but we did not have long to wait for a table. We felt justified driving 40 minutes for a Sunday roast as we have previously enjoyed excellent food. However, disappointingly we were all left unimpressed by our most recent visit. The policy of ordering at the bar is somewhat inconvenient as if anyone in the party wants a drink you have to return to the bar and wait in line with other guests ordering food and drink , not conducive to a relaxing meal with friends. That said, we knew that this was the way things work at the Cholmondeley Arms. Our real gripe was the food. The beef was not tender and quite fatty. They had run out of lamb. The cauliflower cheese was just cauliflower, no cheese sauce in evidence . Half way through the meal one of our party realised that the roast potatoes were missing, once again a trip to the bar was necessary to highlight the omission. Some moments later a bowel was brought to the table containing 3 or 4 sorry looking potatoes that we then had to share out. Certainly not crispy rosemary roast potatoes .The curry was chicken in a sauce that could have come from a jar, wasn’t served with Jasmin rice as stated on menu and the naan flatbread was a small shop bought naan served with a tiny pot of chutney. The desserts were just ok. The coffees, which didn’t arrive with the desserts, were similarly just ok. The setting remains fabulous and if you are lucky enough to be seated near the fire you are on to a winner, otherwise, bring a jumper! I notice from other reviews that our experience was not a one off. Please respect your customers by listening to their comments and make the changes. Diners are spending hard earned cash and deserve a good dining experience. We hope to return once things improve as the setting is just so special.

We stayed for the overnight gin package, a two course meal, overnight stay, breakfast and gin tasting for £225. We were blown away by the gin tasting, 6 generous measures of gin and different mixers plus an excellent chat about the history of gin through the ages. The food was exceptional and our room was warm, comfortable and came with an amazing roll top bath. Staff were friendly and efficient, an excellent experience, would definitely recommend. We have been several times in the past as well and it never disappoints. Looking forward to our next visit!

5/5 This Victorian school has been sympathetically converted into a very comfortable pub/restaurant. The open fire was very welcoming on a cold day and the staff couldn’t have been more friendly and helpful. This is the place to be if you like gin! The menu included the usual standards as well as an interesting range of game dishes and a nod towards Burns Night. My bedroom in the charming Headmaster’s House, was small but cosy and very quiet. No television which didn’t bother me but might be an issue for some.

We booked a Saturday night package which included a gin tasting, a two course dinner, an overnight night stay and breakfast in the Sunday morning. We thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience. The pub is an old schoolhouse and the accommodation is situated in the adjacent old Headmaster's house. We received a warm welcome in the pub and were escorted across to our room. There are only six of these. Each is named after a fictional head teacher. Our room was Miss Fritton of St Trinian's fame/notoriety. The rooms are superbly appointed and, blissfully, do not include a television. The gin tasting was enjoyable and informative. We then moved to sit in front of the open fire and eventually enjoyed dinner in the dining area. The pulled lamb and the steak pie were excellent as were the sticky toffee pudding and the poached pear. The interior of the pub has been stopped back and is cavernous and atmospheric. The staff were great ambassadors. The full English breakfast on Sunday morning provided sufficient fuel with which to power through until the evening. Thank you for a memorable and enjoyable time.

Met up with our family , a party of 10 , for Sunday lunch . The high ceilinged school house was interesting but noisy . We pre ordered our main courses at the request of the restaurant , but the ordering of drinks at the bar certainly ‘ interrupted’ the flow of the reunion - many other clients were also ordering their food at the bar and getting top- up drinks for our party took a while . The roast beef meals were good , but the three lamb meals were uninspiring . I would suggest more than half a carrot per plate , and hotter food , BUT the main gripe is that it took almost an hour from our allotted sit- down time of 1.30 , to receiving our meals . The overall experience was passable , but not memorable . It should be said that the service staff were attentive , polite, and professional throughout .

We decided to try it for lunch after reading of their awards. We were a party of 4 and the first thing to say is that they only take advance bookings for groups, we were travelling up from Cambridge on the morning of 1 December so it was a bit worrying that we might not get a table. Fortunately there was availability and it was moderately busy. You have to order your food at the bar which we duly did, one starter and three main courses. Our main gripe was the length of time it took to serve the food, I had to get up and go to the bar twice to ask them to check and it was over an hour and a half before we got served. A minor complaint would be the room temperature, it was a very cold day outside and the radiators were working but it’s an old building and probably difficult to retain heat. The staff did apologise for the wait but that was all. In the end we were disappointed and feeling that it was just too cold so we went elsewhere for coffee and desserts. I think some remedial training would be helpful for the staff, particularly in terms of being aware of service delays which can happen but it’s worthwhile to keep checking on the customers and keep them informed if there is a long wait. As for the food itself it was nice but not outstanding. We want the restaurant to continue to do well and we will visit again next year when we are in the area.

4 of us went for lunch at 1pm today. It was fairly busy but not full. My husband and I had been 2 weeks previously with friends and had a long wait, we just assumed that was a “one off”, the food was good when it arrived, so we chose to visit again. It clearly wasn’t a one off. Today we waited for over an hour. We had to ask how much longer we would have to wait, no one came to us to apologise or explain until we queried it. Then we were told the food would be out in a few minutes. Then we were advised another table was to be served and then us. We were told it was because they had been busy! The food finally arrived. 2 of us had venison casserole with mash and seasonal greens. We were so hungry by this time I thought I would be happy to eat anything. The food had either been sitting around for a while (like us) or had been reheated, just not enough. The venison dish was cold in the middle , the mash was just warm. We just couldn’t eat it. Also it wasn’t a casserole, it was just a mass of overcooked meat, and a strange texture. My brother had fish cakes which he said were nice but it was served with a green salad that had been drowned in dressing and it all looked a bit sad. He ate it saying he was just glad he hadn’t ordered the venison! My husband had the steak sandwich which he thought was ok. We would normally have ordered puddings but by this time we were so disappointed with the whole experience that we didn’t want to stay any longer. When we went to pay, and expressed our disappointment, the staff member apologised and knocked money off the bill. What we really wanted was a lovely meal and an enjoyable visit. We won’t be back anytime soon I’m afraid.

We visited The Chum in October for the first time in a long time (previous visits had been disappointing). It all started so well, nice atmosphere, lots of families in but it wasn't packed. Hubby had fish and chips and I had the smoked haddock with cheese topping and a portion of chips. Food was really very nice - I would have still been hungry if I hadn't ordered the chips though. Our one issue was that part way through our meal we wanted to order some more drinks. Asked the waitress and were told we had to order at the bar. What???? Who wants to get up part way through a meal to order drinks for goodness sake? It wasn't over busy the night we went but how on earth would this system work when it is busy with queues at the bar to order drinks and/or to order food? Can you imagine a group of people on a busy night mid way through their meals being expected to go to the bar to get more drinks. Absolutely ridiculous. So we didn't get more drinks, we didn't order the pudding that we had intended on having, we came home and opened a bottle of wine instead. We didn't leave a service tip as other than the food being delivered to our table there wasn't any other 'service'. Was this a 'one off' or is the norm now? If so, we won't be coming back I'm afraid and in theory this is our local pub that we should be visiting regularly. Very disappointed.

Regular visitor and again this week - this pub manages to always encapsulate all the qualities that a country pub should have without fail - every visit, every meal choice - it’s always excellent - only thing I would change is moving it to Bunbury!

We've now been here twice (before and after lock down 2) I can't speak highly enough! The food is delicious and the staff could not be more friendly and attentive! The decor is fascinating and creates a wonderful ambiance within the spacious venue.

Wonderful to be able to visit The Chum post lockdown. The food was delicious, all 5 of us ate different meals and all were happy with our choice. We booked to secure a table outdoors, which was saved for us, but the indoor space was carefully spaced out. Everything was done to ensure hygiene and safety. It almost goes without saying that the food here is very good. Don't hesitate, just visit.

A brilliant building converted from an old schoolhouse. The cask beers are always great, the food is excellent and the staff are delightful.Just spent an enjoyable evening, post pandemic, and it worked beautifully. It felt comfortable and welcoming, just like the old days.Pubs have had a really hard time over the last few months and I recommend that you visit the "Chum" and other locally owned pubs to support them as much as you can. They are safe places to be.

We love this place & come whenever we stay at the nearby caravan site. We weren't sure if it had reopened so pulled in on the off chance. We were greeted by a lovely young lady, who took our details & explained the new rules for visiting. Namely, you will be shown to a table, passing a sanitising station & served at your table for both food & drinks. Tables are a minimum of 1m apart & you are welcome visit the facilities, which are cleaned every 30 minutes. Cannot fault any part of our visit (just for a couple of drinks). In fact, I'm still at our table as we write this! Well done to all the staff for a well planned & thought out reopening. We will definitely be returning.

Having lived in the area 18 months this was our first visit and was pleasantly surprised to see how quirky the pub us it had a really good menu and fantastic daily board. Was delighted with our lunch. As others gave said its a bit nippy this time if year, but given the age if the building with its original windows you can understand.

We recently met up with cousins for a catch up. We had been to the Cholmondeley Arms before. The food is very good. I can highly recommend the fish and chips for those with big appetites priced at just under £15. The negative side of the Cholmondeley Arms, is that it has been cold there both times we have been. In fact, even sitting next to the luke warm radiators, we were all freezing. Both visits were for lunch around 12.30 and I do not think the heating is put on early enough. I would have given a better rating if we had been warm.. It has put us off any further visits.

This place is great a converted 1800s school house. We tried to book on the day and we couldn'. It was suggested that we turn up anyway as they have a queueing system so we did. 45min later (the exact time the gentleman operating the queue said) we were sat down. The food is amazing and came really quickly, my other half had the fish pie and said it is the best she had ever had. The waygu beef burger was probably the best burger I've ever had. If you like gin this place has 300 to choose from and a good selection of ales and ciders.

Food has got expensive, on the website states paninis £7.75, when the actual price in the cafe is over £10. We had 2 paninis and a pot of tea, the bill came to over £27. We use the cafe on a regular basis, but will be giving it a miss from now.

The most appalling 'meal' and service that I have ever been subjected to. We ordered steak and ale pie and this was brought out to us and placed on our table and described as a pie. However, there was absolutely no pastry, just a bit of gravy in a dish. When I called the waiter back he said 'to be honest, we've ran out of pastry' - are these people for real? To add insult to injury, the manager actually tried to charge us for the pies we never received!!!! Shambolic and not for the first time, but definitely for the last. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME/MONEY!!!!

This place has a vast amount of things for children to play on. However don’t expect to get food quick- they have two cage areas but one is never open and the other has a constant huge queue because the staff take forever! Even if you want drinks you have to queue with the food and last time we queued for 25 minutes! Ridiculous when you have children to supervise and feee!
