China Garden in Basingstoke and Deane

Came here for the first time tonight as I had left it too late and it was the closest place that was open until 10pm. I feel fortunate for this turn of events as the food was delicious and the staff very friendly, the waiting time wasn't long either. I'll definitely be making this my new favourite Chinese.

Not even worth a 1 star. I had to take the fish, sausages and chips back after my Son collected them. The sausages and fish were rock hard you couldn't cut them. The chips tasted awful. They did cook a fresh order, but the food was tasteless and cheap quality. I think the shop may have changed hands. Now go to Kings Furlong Chinese, much nicer.

Ordered a spring roll amongst other things and when I got home I noticed it had been deep fried and was absolutely full of grease. We had hair in the chicken chow mein. Also ordered a chicken and mushroom pie which was cold on the bottom. It seems like everything is microwaved. Also no prices are displayed so you won't know if you are being charged the correct amount. Will not be going back.

The last few times we have bought fish and chips, the chips have been old and re-heated, and very poor quality.

Waited a good half hr, more chip scraps than chips, chicken in chicken balls slimy, and one dish completely wrong, bring back the old team

Used to use this place all the time but now has Gone really downhill since take over. Cod was way overcooked to the point it was solid. Chips were also hard like eating soap. Sad to say I won’t be eating here again EVER!! Avoid at all costs.

I ordered at 9.30pm Wednesday 24/01/24 and popped into Tesco next door whilst waiting. I added & paid separately for a curry sauce @ £2.10. Collected the order at 21.50, realised immediately the curry sauce was missing & tried to call them. No answer & closed.

Much improved since the ownership change. Will definitely start using more regularly again.

Had pancake, roll and chips from here today, the pancake roll was fine, but the chips had clearly been double fried and my guess, was left over from lunchtime

Think you need to allow people to pay by card at any value instead of only over £10. As most people use cards now for payment.

Don’t like giving me star but I was staying in Basingstoke for my mates birthday. Ran out of time to cook before meeting him so got a sausage and chips from here. Seemed ok at the time with nice chips but the sausage had a very strange texture which gave me alarm bells. Had bad indigestion all day and just felt bad, left the birthday do early and couldn’t eat anything else, just wanted to sleep. Not a great way to do the day. I’m not saying 100% it was the sausage, may have been something up with the chips, either way it wasn’t good.

Used to love getting food from this place since it’s been under new management it’s gone downhill. Microwave rice that’s bland and stick and the curry I used to like but not this one Won’t be coming back. The young guy behind the counter we needed to repeat 3 times he gave the most dirty look too. If the other could come back and run it I’d go back. Least they would chat with you see how your day has been . Not impressed my order was a chicken curry and rice. You failed to mention it would contain mushroom you’re very lucky I’m not allergic to mushrooms otherwise I’d have you closed down

Been a client here for 20+ years, ordered sweet and sour chicken with cashew nuts, seems to be missing the sweet and sour, new staff, hoping Michael and his family are ok, shame if this is going down hill… also has a min amount £10 for card, mine came to £9.50 for a main and rice…

Great service, ordered both from the Chinese menu and had chips. Tasted fresh and flavoursome. Vegetable curry was delicious.

Wouldn't use any other chinese takeaway in Basingstoke have been using this one for over 30 years. Good fish and chips as well. Keep going.

Used to absolutely love this place but in the last 9 months it’s gone down hill. The family that used to run it seem pushed out. Some new ladies have taken over, they get everything wrong, and then shout at you when you dare to question it. Weird consistency of sausages these days too. Such a shame

What has happened..... It's going down hill - fast. More often now the food is greasy bland & just not like it used to be. A real shame as was a regular for over 30 years. Tonight I.opted for a good old crispy pancake roll, as I wanted something lightish non greasy. Well what a surprise their crisy pancake roll was 2 ' things' that looked like slightly flat fish fingers! I've never had a pancake roll made with batter!! Exactly the same batter as the fish & greasy & literally not even a spoonful of beansprouts , I think I tiny piece of meat... awful. Sorry can't afford to waste money so will find somewhere else. A shame.

This Chinese is the worst chinese I’ve ever bought. Tastes like pure booty hole. I don’t think you can even call it chicken and what kind of Singapore chow mein has what looks like uncooked sausage in it and not even spicy. Pattern yourself up. The best thing in that meal was the prawn crackers, which you don’t even cook. I really spent £20 to eat none of it.

Fancied a Chinese meal, and wanted local, so went to China Garden... Wow, I was very surprised at the large menu to choose from! It took me a while to decide lol. It was lovely food too.... very tasty!

Used to be great and very welcoming, recently some ladies have taken over, are very rude, forget items , argue with customers, and have changed the feel of the place.

I've given 4 stars as I do tend to find this a great place and I am a regular customer but on this occasion.... On this one evening the portion control wasn't good, the sweet and sour sauce leaked all over the bag as the lid wasn't on properly causing a right mess and unhappy wife. Everything is getting more expensive so I don't want to judge them on prices as every experience before has been great.

I had a Savoy battered sausage last time. Perfectly crispy, tasty too. I got a HUGE amount of chips and every last one was delicious! Prices are fair for the amount of food you get, my Dad got something with beef and noodles last time, I don't remember fully what it is but I tried it and it was amazing! I've been here about 5 times and it never fails to impress me! I'd truly reccomend this place to anyone, please try it!!

Terrible. One star is generous. Over £15 for Absolutely terrible fish and chips. Chips white and undercooked. No where near golden. Fish expensive for rubbish. Worst fish and chips I’ve had. Large cod and larch haddock. Gooey batter. Not thick meaty fish you’d expect for that price. Looked like something frozen from Iceland. Won’t be going back.

We have a takeaway every Friday from China Gardens, sometimes fish and chips which is always very good and reasonably priced and at other times a Chinese takeaway which again is very reasonably priced and tastes superb. We have been having takeaways from there for over 30 years during which times the place has stayed in Michael’s ownership and the service and staff have been superb.

Having been to Michael's as long as I can remember, it was disconcerting when the quality dipped a while back and I stopped going. Having recently been again I was very happy to find the food back to its original excellent quality! I've now been a couple of times and am glad to announce Michael's is the best fish and chips in town again!

Beautiful Chinese! Ordered a variety of dishes including a chicken curry (with egg fried rice)! Have ordered fish and chips from here for nearly 20 years, first time ordering Chinese and am not disappointed! Prawn crackers thrown in for good measure

The worst Chinese I’ve ever had. I bought vermicelli rice noodles and there was NO sauce on them at all, they were completely bland. I also got some satay sauce which was actually just gravy I don’t know why they thought we wouldn’t notice. My family were complaining that all their food tastes off too. Would not go there again.

I was very surprised that The China Garden is not rated on Trip Advisor as the best Chinese take-away in Basingstoke, because it really is. The food is superb. They always use good quality fresh ingredients and the menu includes a lot of specialist dishes that you can't get anywhere else around here. Because they don't offer a delivery service I have used other Chinese take-away's and some are quite good, but nothing comes close to the China Garden. It's well worth calling in to get a copy of their extensive menu.

Tried this takeaway for the first time recently. What a nice surprise! Lots of veggie and vegan options, lovely big portion of noodles with bean curd & broccoli. The broccoli was cooked to perfection and the prices are great. I'll definitely be returning for more!

I have been getting my fish and chips and chinese takeaways from Michaels China Garden for 25 years ever since I moved to Basingstoke. Service is always with a smile and the food is always good and wholesome. If you have a food allergy or intolerance ask and if they can help they will, we know as we have to be carefull about wheat and peanut issues.

£2.20 for a soggy battered sausage! Undercooked chips Rude staff I’d avoid at all costs worst experience possible

Fantastic food, well priced, and fairly short wait considering it's made to order.

Owner when serving wears a cotton hat this is not good health wise . He's dealing with fish chips other . Bill invoices are a piece of paper . Different cost every visit . Written in Chinese. Menus are available stuck to tables and walls . No paper give out menus . Expensive . And they hand you the bag . No checklist . You hope it's correct when you get home . We had ordinary rice not special fried rice which I asked for . Spoilt my meal and my wife's too . Crackers are given but half the portion to a while back . This has gone down hill . Taking customers for granted . I'm so surprised. Not what I'd call a good restaurant doing Chinese in this area. There's none .

Have been coming to this takeaway for the last four years and have never had a bad meal, the food is always so tasty and the staff are so friendly! I also think the prices are reasonable. I would highly recommend this Chinese.

No flavour, seaweed tasted stale no flavour. Beef Chow mein had no flavour. Not a very good first time experiance

The food is very good and price too

Usually a very good Chinese takeaway but on this occasion it was disappointing. By the time I got home half my soup was at the bottom of the carrier bag need to check my car seat after I write this review hoping it hasn’t ruined my car seat. Hardly any soup left in the cup container, had been crushed, obviously poorly packed. The bbq ribs I ordered were more like dry salted ribs with some sauce poured over it which didn’t even taste like bbq flavour. Chicken chow mein was dry and way too salty. However the sweet and sour chicken with cashew nuts was just about ok. The special fried rice was tasteless. Feel really let down because their food usually tastes freshly cooked, flavoursome with great oriental flavours, mouthwatering stuff. Think their fish and chips is still good though. They aren’t exactly cheap either and I don’t mind paying the prices for good quality food. Doubt I’ll be going their again after that experience might have to go back to the Mayflower again bit further out for me but worth it for better quality Chinese cuisine.

Always get great food, conveniently priced, lovely catch up as there is always people I know in here, food very reasonably priced, and whilst waiting for food theres a pub across the pathwaywhat more can I ask for?

A really great Chinese, awesome food and nice people. Just don't order on a Saturday!! Huge queues, rushed food and double the waiting time we were told. They're closed on Monday but every other weekday evening they're great!

Absolutely rubbish food. After reading the reviews I went to get this Chinese. Very disappointed, absolutely bad. Salt and Pepper chicken (chilli) - no pepper just salt. Too much salt. Egg fried rice - so dry and no egg at all. Chicken Chow mein - very pale colour and smelly chicken. All very dry. Thrown most of the food in the rubbish bin. Even my son couldn't stomach it. One star for the plastic boxes.......... Waste of money...........

The food was perfectly edible and the service was good but the food is not as good as other restaurants/takeaways in Basingstoke. I ordered chicken chow mein which was a good portion size but was a bit dry and the chicken pieces were precooked with no flavour. I also had squid which was a bit chewy and again doesn't compete with other places.

I ordered fish and chips and also portion of chips to take away. These were given to me wrapped up to take home so never saw what they were like until home( big mistake not seeing what food you are purchasing) At home I opened wrapped fish and chips to find

Hands down this is by far the best fish and chips and Chinese takeaway in Basingstoke. I have been coming here for at least 18 years and Micheal has never let me down. Sometimes you have to wait a little longer but it's worth it.

Was in the mood for a chinese so checked online to find one. 1st time coming here and it wont be the last. The food was hot and looked fresh. It tasted amazing and prices are very fair for portions. Highly recommended

I've been coming here for a number of years Michael who runs it has not only the best Chinese takeaway in Basingstoke but the best chip shop in Basingstoke , I know this for a fact as we regularly order for work 20+ a lot of people who come from outside of Basingstoke and also say it's the best. The chips are nice and crisp fresh crunchy not dropping in oil like some. The Chinese is just superb , best dishes Salt and pepper fried chicken, Chicken chow mein , Singapore Vermicelli chow mein, Roast chicken Chinese style , chicken fried rice, to name but a few - all perfect , you can tell as it gets very busy especially on a Friday night , the tip being phone your order through first !

We have been using China garden for many years even when it was based at black dam, over the last few months the quality has gone downhill, when visiting on the 9/9/16 the shop was reasonably quiet after waiting twenty minutes and watching people come and go we decided to chase the order which had just been completed, got as far as the door and felt the containers at the bottom of the bag they were only Luke warm, on returning to the counter the gentleman taking orders seemed surprised that I wanted my food hot when I complained he took it away which I thought was to replace it but was so quick must have been just microwaved, when we got home yes the food was warm but the omelette looked a mess and definitely wasn't the best that I have had ( these have changed and don't look the same as they used to, more like scrambled egg with ingredients thrown in, they used to be much better ), the house special curry had a funny taste to it and the fried rice that was ordered was not fried rice, the only decent thing in the order was the chips and after eating the curry which we have had many times before, we did not feel well, sadly this has put us off and we will not be returning to the China garden again.

After reading reviews I decided to purchase large cod and large chips at the China garden. Sadly I was disappointed,the fish was over cooked and tasteless, the large portion of chips was huge but not too bad. I will vote with my feet and won't return or reccommend. £12.50 wasted!

I've been using the China Garden for donkeys years and their previous takeaway on Blackdam long before they moved to Kempshot. The food is superb, always freshly cooked using the best fresh ingredients. I love Chinese food and have tried every takeaway in Basingstoke and the China Garden is by far the best.

Have visited Michaels many, many times over the years. After a year in Lanzarote I've realised although there is Chinese food, where I've gone it's bog standard. Here, the special chow mien hot is a must have every order and the sweet chilli chicken. Bbq ribs, seaweed and chips great also. On a Friday/Saturday night it's a good idea to ring the order through. Lovely finishing touch, Michael always knew what my daughter wanted without us asking! I agree with previous comment a loyalty card would be a fab idea.

We have been using the China garden for over 20 years for Chinese takeaways. We love the extensive menu and the fact that it does get regularly updated with new dishes. The staff are always very friendly and the service is very good, even in busy periods. I tend to place my orders over the phone, which always works well. The food is always served up piping hot and contains plenty of fresh ingredients. There is a fish and chips side to the business too, but we always opt for Chinese, so I am unable to provide any comments, apart from the fact that the food always looks good.

This is by far the best Chinese takeaway in Basingstoke and probably the whole of Hampshire. Everything is cooked freshly and they only use the very best ingredients. I've been a big fan of Michael's (the owner|) food for years and used to go to his previous takeaway on Black Dam, so I've probably been a customer of his for over twenty years and I can honestly say that I have never had a bad dish.
