The Chequers Inn is a hidden gem not too far from Harrogate and Surrounded by beautiful views, the room was equipped with everything you would need and it was probably the most comfortable bed I've stayed in. The food in the pub next door was outstanding and the staff were very helpful, happy and nothing was too much trouble for them. Overall this place exceeded my expectations and was very good value for money, I would highly recommend it and given the chance I would definitely return

I’m so pleased that I found this gorgeous Inn! We stayed overnight, and enjoyed a delicious dinner and breakfast. We ordered rib eye steak, and it was cooked to perfection, so tender and tasted amazing! The carvery looked superb as did the homemade deserts in the chiller cabinet. The staff were super friendly, and so helpful. The interior of the Inn is very tastefully decorated, modern and welcoming. The atmosphere is one of peacefulness and the beer garden is a great space to chill out in. Our room was comfortable, very clean, and had a lovely patio area that was a little sun trap. We throughly enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to return and recommend. We couldn’t fault anything.

Enjoyed sitting in the bar. Starters OK although bacon on mushrooms was not crispy. Beef from carvery vastly overcooked. Yorkshire pudding inedible, it was cold, brittle and bland. Drinks extortionate. Will not be returning. Very disappointing

Called in on a Friday night and both of us had the fish and chips, normally £15 but £12 on a Friday, surprisingly tasty meal, first class fish served with homemade style chunky chips and a separate portion of peas. Only negative is draught Guiness pump on display on bar but they open a can(lol)so you pay about £6 for one can! Ouch!. Bar menu needs more choice and needs to be cheaper.

We needed to break our trip home from Scotland to London and wanted to see the amazing Fountains Abbey, Chequers Inn fitted the bill perfectly.Friendly greeting on arrival. Showed to our room that was small, but very functional. Separate room with bath and shower over, with basin and toilet.Everything clean and functional but the toilet was a little close to the heated towel rail - that's my only negative comment! As a vegetarian I do avoid carveries but needn't have worried. Veggie options were a mushroom stroganoff (cooked to order very quickly so it wasn't boiled to death) or veggie sausages. Like many vegetarians I avoid these sausages like the plague 'cos they can vary from excellent down to greasy sawdust so we had the stroganoff, and very nice it was too. This came with the full spectrum of carvery veg and side dishes which were varied, plentiful and good quality. The puddings were amazing, a whole glass refrigerated cabinet full including apple pie and blueberry pie that were served at your favourite temperature with optional cream or custard. I had apple pie and other restauranteurs should note that this was apple pie - apple surrounded by a minimalist layer of pastry as distinct from the usual pastry slabs separated by a barely visible stratum of indeterminate fruit guaranteeing that no-one ever suffers from vitamin or fibre overload. We slept well on comfortable twin beds. What else can you say?Breakfast was a buffet with tinned fruit, yoghurts, cereals and all the standard hot ingredients including whole real mushrooms, tomatoes, beans, hash browns, meats, eggs and the rest.Service was unfailingly friendly, fast and efficient. And the final bill for supper, bed and breakfast was about the same as we had just paid in Scotland for B&B!

Nice quality meat, proper Yorkshire puddings fresh veg and proper gravy Starters are traditional and good value I love the roll mop herring personally Husband is a huge fan of the creamed mushrooms with crispy baconSteak night is excellent value. Only good things to say about this place. 3 of us shared a booth in the packed restaurant and had a lovely carvery. Enough meat for big eaters and help yourself to veg. Inexpensive evening meal without kids running around, like I've noticed at other restaurant carvery's. Car park was full so we had to park on grass, which is no problem with my 4x4.

We came here regularly about 20 years ago and loved it.We came back today and thought it was very average. Its funny how people say its the best carvery around but i suspect some of these people are smitten with the Chequers and probably havent tried other places.I eat at many different places including Carveries. On Friday night 16th august 19 i ate at The Anchor at Whixley now that Carvery takes some beating! I know the Chequers doesnt allow kids which is good and bad.Although today we thought we saw some teenagers albeit quiet ones. The Chequers Carvery is £14.00 this includes a starter. Why dont they offer a sweet or starter for the set price? The plates when you go up to get your main course are burning hot and you have to try holding the red hot plate using thin cheap napkins.Big Tip here for the Chequers! Buy wooden trays for patrons to put their hot plates on! This service is provided at Walshford at the Bridge Carvery. The meat today was ok...quite nice. The veg selection is small. The Yorkshire puddings are too dry and brittle. The soup starter was tasty as was the Melon. The sweets arent very big and are expensive i think. The Walker family must be millionaires ok fair enough but apart from some refurbishment why not reinvest a bit?and charge a bit less?would be nice to see the Elderley get a discount. We wont return again.Staff were friendly though.

Me and my partner had a lovely, relaxing stay for our valentines weekend. The room was absolutely lovely. I requested the room with the crushed velvet diamond bed and balcony and on arrival we was pleased to have been given it. Quiet location and not far from Harrogate, 10 min drive, £15 in taxi as we went there on th evening for food and drink. The hotel restaurant had lovely presents tables with a cosy atmosphere. although the only downside with no disrespect, smelt of old people and could do with maybe a refurbish of carpets and walls to be really critical. Staff were lovely and was nice for a family run pub. We are a young couple and wanted a quiet, relaxing night away which we achieved. In the pub was only older people and I didn’t notice any young or middle aged. Tea and coffee was provided in the room with also gorgeous shortbread biscuits which we thoroughly enjoyed. The balcony booked out onto the car park but was lovely to watch people ride there horses in the distance ect.

1st time we'd been to this place and so glad I found it. We go somewhere different for Christmas gathering every year, this has got to be the best year. Arrived to a lovely setting, friendly welcome and the rooms were great. Clean and very nicely decorated, loved that you could step out your room straight outside to a fantastic view. The meal on the night was faultless and the carvery has got to be the best I've had. Everyone in our party enjoyed it. The amount of tender meat you got, and selection of veg with the most delicious gravy just couldn't of been any better. The chef serving it was friendly. Peter who had checked us in did everything possible on the night to make us feel welcome. Nothing was to much trouble for him. Make sure you leave room for dessert as the selection is lovely. A really popular restaurant. We booked early. We booked an evening meal for 8.00pm. We arrived 15 mins.early and received a warm welcome from several of the staff as we were shown immediately to our table which was in an intimate alcove. Service was immaculate throughout. We decided upon the carvery meal although steaks were on offer as were vegetarian options. The starters were more than acceptable but we little knew of what was to come. The carvery was substantial the choice of meats was beef, pork and turkey. Two of the three of us decided to try all three meats and the portions of each of the meats were enormous. The trimmings were well cooked and flavoursome and filled our plates. Great value for £10. We had to leave a little time to digest such a feast before ordering our sweet. They too were good quality and reasonably priced, one of our number couldn't finish this course and declined the offer of a doggy bag.

I found the whole experience a bit disconcerting. The decor is straight out of the 70s - as is the menu. The food is adequate, as long as you aren't a vegitarian, but very much of its time and with little imagination. On the plus side, if you can cope with the journey in time the price is very good. Very very disappointing.had read good reviews but realise now they referred to accommodation and not the restaurant.food(fish and chips)was delicious.service diabolical thanks to a very rude older redhead waitress. problems first of all when ordering drinks from young waitress.maybe just helping out on school term holiday?didn't know if they served peroni?she shouted over to bar and before I could say if it was half pint or bottle another waitress appeared with a bottle and a glass.my friend requested tap water and it was dumped on the table abruptly.no ice,no lemon.we noticed restaurant was emptying very quickly after 2pm.we had arrived about 1.30.my friend asked young waitress if they closed.she seemed unsure and after looking over at bar she said we were alright.friend then ordered dessert and we ordered another peroni and coffee.just after 2.30 red head presented us with our bill and said they were closed!we explained we had asked about this and told her answer we were given.she then, believe it or not, and I quote said very rudely and sarcastically "well you have been alright haven't you "we felt extremely awkward then and I left peroni.stupidly we paid for it but had they said 5minutes earlier that they were closed we would never had ordered.also very strange.once I was home my clothes smelt strongly of fish and chips and had to put through wash.have eaten in fish and chip restaurants many times and never had this problem.think it may be due to seating booth we were allocated.definetly won't be back.

The Chequers Inn Restaurant is an unpretentious slightly old fashioned place within handy reach of Fountains Abbey. Four of us had lunch at this place back in November. We enjoyed the carvery and thought the meat was of good quality although the starters were rather uninspiring. Overall the meal was value for money. On the strength of this visit we rang to book a table for 10 to celebrate my daughter's birthday. My husband rang again a few days later to request a highchair for our granddaughter. She has only just learnt to sit unaided so previously she simply sat on mum's lap. Imagine our disappointment to be informed rather sharply that the restaurant operates a no child policy. The staff member my husband spoke to was not at all apologetic or sympathetic. We were shocked and disappointed. This is not a high end fine dining establishment so the policy was not expected. When we rang to make the original booking there was no mention of it and the staff did not ask whether everyone was an adult. I checked the website and could not find any reference to this either. Whilst I appreciate it is the establishment's right to have this type of policy it should be made clear on the website and diners should be informed when they make a booking. If we hadn't rung back to request the highchair we would have been completely unaware of the policy and this would have led to a very embarrassing situation. We were very disappointed but fortunately have managed to book another venue which is far more welcoming.

Tried this place after recommendations from a friend. It's the first time anywhere that I've been asked if I would like more meat on my plate despite choosing a slice of all three (beef, pork, turkey) I could honestly say that it was the best beef I've ever tasted, however I thought the choice of vegetables was poor (cabbage, carrots, cauliflower and potatoes) despite this they tasted very nice. The gravy was first class. The only downside to the meal were the ridiculously close proximity of the tables, it felt like the bloke on the next table was practically sitting on my knee and the meal was eaten in silence as the bloke seemed more interested in our conversation than anything his wife had to say. As mentioned in other reviews the sweet selection looked amazing but my partner was put off by people queuing for the carvery standing over the desserts coughing and sneezing so we didn't bother. The dessert area would really be better situated somewhere else. All in all though would definitely recommend the carvery.

The Chequers is a fabulous carvery, family owned and run. It also offers accommodation and caters for caravans. The food is always fresh, home cooked and absolutely delicious. There is a choice of starters (slightly retro for anyone who was around in the 70s) - prawn cocktail, melon, creamy mushrooms with crispy bacon etc. and absolutely beautiful. The carvery meats on Sunday were Beef, Pork and Turkey all perfectly cooked. Lots of vegetables - carrots, cauliflower, cabbage, roast potatoes, mashed potato (real not packet), Yorkshire Puddings, superb gravy- a proper Sunday lunch. If you have space - and that can be a challenge - there is a dessert counter offering a variety of home made desserts - today's offering included, sherry trifle, tiramisu, cheesecakes, roulades, fresh fruit, bakewell tart, carrot cake, chocolate gateau to name a few. If you are full, you can take your dessert home all safely packaged, to enjoy later in the day.Good choices of beers, wines and spirits along with soft drinks and a proper tea pot of tea or good coffee to follow.Spotlessly clean and cosy and welcoming. We eat here for Saturday evening carvery or Sunday lunch mostly, but they have an excellent steak night midweek. I would recommend booking because this place has built a serious reputation over the years and has a lot of loyal diners who return because it is consistently good food. Better to book than risk not getting a table.

We had the carvery at lunchtime on Sunday. The dining room is very nice indeed and cosy and inviting. The meat on the carvery was excellent - turkey, beef, lamb and pork - all of which I had a helping and all were fabulous. However, we felt the selection of veggies was poor - roast potatoes, mash, cabbage, carrots and I cant remember the other. There was stuffing, yorkshire puds and gravy, along with all the sauces for the various meats. One of us is a vegetarian and so she was somewhat disappointed at the lack of veggies. I know it is a carvery and there was plenty of meat, however there are a lot of vegetarians in our world. The desserts looked lovely - they are served by a member of staff. We both had a lime/soda to drink - the lime was at the bottom of the glass and not very nice tasting - a swivel stick would have been nice to mix the drinks. Overall the service was very good and would recommend the place.

Visited on a sunday for the carvery. 2 courses £12.95, but this is starter and main course, its an extra £4.25 I think it is for a sweet, you cannot have main and pudding as your two courses which to be honest would have suited our party of 4. Not prepared to pay £17.15 to have a sweet. The food is very good the meat, beef, pork or turkey is superb. However, tables are intimately close, more dining hall than restaurant. Would we go again , well only if they are more flexible over which two courses you can have for £12.95. Cant knock the food which is why I give a 4star but more flexibility required on the 2 course issue.

Visited on Sunday for the carvery. At £12.95 for a starter and the main course, this is very good value for money.I had the spicy parsnip soup for the starter - and boy was it spicy. A bit too much for my taste, but I'll know for next time - and there will be a next time. They have a good range of starters, but some of them do carry an additional cost, which would bring the cost to nearer £15.00.There isn't an option. You have to have a starter and main course rather than main course and pudding, which would have suited some members of our group better. The carvery was very good indeed. A choice of beef, pork or turkey, or a combination of all three. You can't have a sunday lunch without Yorkshire puddings. Unfortunately, these were tough and some were burnt. They shouldn't have come out of the kitchen!!Two choices of potato, roast (just ok), mash - sublime. Cauli, carrots, cabbage were really nice, as were the different sauces available. The drinks were reasonably priced. All in all 'a very good do'.We did like the atmosphere. They have a policy of no under tens in the dining room, which was great for us, and obviously for a lot of diners, as the place was heaving. I've lost count of the number of meals that have been ruined by 'mummy's little soldier' or 'daddy's precious one', having a 'I'll squeam. and squeam until I'm sick' episode. The staff were attentive and professional.

This is a large restaurant attached to a caravan park and small motel. Value wise it can't really be faulted. The carvery was very good indeed and for £10 per head represented excellent value for money. I had the beef and turkey and both were very good indeed although the beef was slightly too well done for my taste..(a minor problem). My starter of hot mushrooms was also delicious but my partner's prawn cocktail was a bit 'gloopy'. We did not have dessert which were mainly of the gateau variety and didn't appeal. The restaurant itself is a bit 'barn like' ..We were actually seated in a small alcove area which I would recommend. Maybe because it was a Friday night there were a number of large parties eating so the atmosphere was a bit raucous. Plenty of good points but not enough to prompt a return visit anytime soon.

Was a little sceptical when we initially walked in but this soon changed, we all opted for the carvery which we all enjoyed the meat was fresh and cooked to perfection and the veg was very fresh too. Then it come to deserts of which there was a good selection all home made, I opted for the lemon cheesecake and I was impressed. The next time my parents are staying on the campsite there I will be sure to visit again.

My wife and I had 3 guests staying with us last weekend and so we decided to go out for lunch with them and our 2 1/2 year old daughter. We decided to try this restaurant.Firstly, we were amazed to see a bit of paper stuck to the door for the restaurant area saying they did not allow entry to under 10s due to licensing laws. I asked the staff inside who were incredibly unhelpful and just shrugged their shoulders and said it was the law. They could not have looked less welcoming if they tried. This clearly is not the law as we have never come across this at any other similar place and a brief scan of the internet does not support this either. To me this sounds more like discrimination. Their website does not mention this at all.We then asked if we could sit outside and again they seemed to have absolutely no idea and finally decided this was probably ok. Having sat down outside we looked at the menu. Amazingly, there was nothing vegetarian for one of our guests to eat! Even allowing for the family unfriendliness of the place, how does it make any business sense? Especially when it is next to a caravan park, offers hotel rooms and is on the way to family attractions (we were going to Brimham Rocks).Next, how in this day and age can a restaurant justify the complete lack of vegetarian options on a menu? Finally, I cannot even begin to describe the utter unhelpfulness of the staff and their poor attitude.Really disappointing and a poor experience.

A large family run site with attached hotel and caravan site. As the title implies we turned up for a carvery while caravanning at same place. Looking around the bar and restaurant area we were doubting our decision to eat there. The staff while not being rude were not as friendly as we would have liked. The male toilets were disgusting and the overall impression of the place was long, long overdue a facelift. Then came the food served by their foreign chef, apart from a poor choice of vegetables the meat, roast potatoes, carrots etc were cooked to perfection, I felt obliged to thank the chef when our meal was finished.

I decided to have the carvery and my partner went for the steak and then we realised why the place was so busy, the food was outstanding! We don't live in the area so probably won't be returning soon, but lucky locals to have such a great place to eat nearby.

A couple of friends invited to join them at the restaurant which we used to go often, don't know why we stopped as we recall the food was always good. It was a quiet Sunday evening the manager told us but the atmosphere was really good, I agree with previous reviews it could do with a refurbishment as they decor a little old and tired. The food was excellent with a good choice of meats and vegetables were all presented in individual dishes with lids where we could help ourselves as often as we wished and I personally must say how delicious the mashed potatoes were (just like my mum used to make), the sweets where excellent and we could all tell they were home made. The service was excellent throughout the evening and we have planned a return visit in the very near future.Thank you for a lovely evening with great friends and excellent food.

My wife and I, travelled up from the soft comforts of the south coast to spend the New Years Eve festive period with my brother and his wife to the vista more familiar to the Emmerdale viewer, lots of open rugged country pierced through with ancient rock, at this time of year frequently looking more like a christmas card with patches of the white stuff. As usual for this time of year, when the suggestion was made, " We'd like to show you one of our favourite carveries" our mental comparision was made with the jug named brewery group that we are familiar with at home and although it seemed we had been eating non stop for ten days, we agreed and set off, the journey from Wharfedale took about 25 to 30 minutes and as we passed many other establishments, our curiosity was raised, Arriving at the hotel/restaurant, we realised this was more than a small inn but part of a smartly presented holiday destination, but on January the second, it was quiet. We were greeted, names exchanged and shown to a booked table within a large, well lit, comfortable dining area most professionally, by a well groomed polite, member of staff. Menus were presented but our family recommended the carvery, our drinks order was made and we proceeded to the carvery, three or more large meat dishes were available, each looking superb and another uniformed member of staff provided every item requested, the generous portions were plated and it must be noted this food was succulent, fresh and top quality, as was the variety of vegetables, we all resumed our table positions and began our meal with relish, the conversation, like the liquid refreshment flowed and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience, only to be asked, "would you like seconds, before your dessert?" Once again the delicious desserts were well presented and served to the diner's expectations. The evening passed quickly and we left the unexpected good cheer and cuisine, situated in the heart of the Yorkshire dales, confident that we would return should we ever pass this way again.

We booked a table for my daughter's 16th birthday and had I read the reviews before we went I would've worried about bringing my 13 year old daughter. They don't have a childrens menu so I asked for a bowl of chips and a portion of onion rings for her and they were good enough to bring them out whilst we had our starters. They obviously cater for an adult clientele, but I don't find that offensive as there are so many children friendly pubs in Harrogate and surrounding areas it's not a problem! GOOD POINTS - Amazing carvery, beautiful meat and you can have as big a plate as you like. Excellent food and well presented. Excellent prices and great value for money. Lovely looking pub. Nice atmosphere. Service good, older waitress polite and efficient, nothing too much trouble! The staff took to the sound system to announce her birthday and had the pub singing happy birthday which was a nice touch!BAD POINTS - Decor extremely dated, 1980's style so could do with a face lift and some tlc. Alienating families with younger children surely must lose them business, it's not advertised anywhere so I can understand the upset it would cause. Hope this is a helpful review!

I am a regular here I often come with my family. My point of view is that the food is great! Love the cuts of meat they're perfect. But I'm not going to deny the service could be a hundred times better! All staff seem so unsociable and unhappy, especially one of the older women. However they're all perfectly happy when chatting to one another behind the bar. Would still return as the food was good and we can just ignore the staff at the end of the day.

We regularly visit the chequers for family meals as the food is delicious especially the steak night and obviously the carvery - best around for miles. The last 2 visits have unfortunately made up my not to return which is such a shame. This is due to the service. I was already put off going again after last times visit for steak night where I was told I had to pay a pound for tap water (very rudely) followed by another rude waitress - having taken the order wrong for how my sister wanted her steak cooking - got stroppy making my sister decide just to have the overcooked steak to save hassle. The waitress then muttered 'thought so'. This is why I wasn't keen to go back but as it wasn't my choice, i just went with it. When we arrived we got seated and a lady came to take a drinks order - abruptly asking if we were paying separately if so we had to order drinks at the bar and when we told her we would be paying all together so told us we had to order at the bar anyway 'because it was easier' maybe for her but not my sister who then had to take 3 trips to the bar to order 11 drinks. For the rest of our visit there were numerous occasions where I said to myself - never again. Credit where credit is due though - 2 waitresses were very helpful and friendly and as a large group are food (delicious as expected ) was served promptly and hit the spot!

Staff.we will go back and have recommended to friends.Bet most people don't serve food in their own homes as good as this.will definitely be returning this autumn. And I would add, I am a fussy individual.

Never felt so unwelcome as we were here!! We though we would try out the carvery, when we arrived we were told kids were not usually allowed but this time we could stay, we were put in a dark corner in the bar, I asked why we weren't allowed in the restaurant? To be told kids are not usually allowed! We were upset by this point as made to feel like we were not welcome, not wanted. I asked politely that we eat in the restaurant like everyone else was and the unhappy lady agreed, but she put us in a booth far away next to the toilet! At this point we were all upset and my daughter was in tears. We ordered 2carveries and asked for a children's carvery to be told it's only adults meal available, by this point we were very very upset, my daughter was hiding and upset, we decided to leave....without eating. I think they were glad, no one asked us to stay or apologised. Is it really allowed children can't dine there, surely all should be welcome and our money it is 2014.Shame on them.....

Popped into this pub for Sunday food on way to Fountains Abbey. Fairly unfriendly and unethusastic service, not a smile in sight. Atmosphere not very welcoming. Food however was decent value £11.95 for carvery.Three meats on offer but not a great range of veggies. the drinks however were very expensive! £5.30 for a lime cordial and an Appletiser. Call me old fashioned but i believe in fair pricing. All in all, its a shame but this place could be so much nicer.

This place appears to have changed its name to Whittakers, which I believe is the family name who own it. The food is good, especially the carvery, although prices did seem to have increased since our last visit a couple of years ago. The restaurant is always popular and booking is essential, although more tables have been squeezed in now, which is to the detriment of a nice, cosy, intimate dinner as people on the next table are literally inches away!Out in the countryside which is a great setting. A pleasant place for a meal or drink.

I have just read the reviews below and am saddened that the unacceptable treatment of guests continues. A couple of years ago we went as a family party for a celebration and were treated to an aggressive, abusive and threatening display from the man behind the bar - who I took to be the owner - when I asked why they would not give me tap water. My wife was abused, I was called a communist and we were told to get out. Sadly we'd just paid. The whole place became quiet and the staff looked embarrassed. A couple of friends of ours reported similar behaviour recently. The place is popular and the food was acceptable but not out of the way, so I can't see the popularity. This is quite the worst form of threatening behaviour I have ever seen and I'm surprised they can keep a licence

Unbelievable, we were gobsmacked by her behaviour but seen as she was the manageress at the time we had no one higher to complain to. Also did not want to say anything in front of other guests ,lord only knows what she would have done. We left furious and will never go back. Also heard usual manageress on holiday.
