Lovely historic ambience and architecture. Stayed in the suite for one night as had to attend a wedding. Food was lovely and service was great. Great customer service. Very pleasant and helpful. The Suite. Bathroom was beautiful although l just used the shower due to finding hair in the bath. I feel the interior decoration in the suite could be warmer, with more colour. The glass furniture in the room is rather tacky including the silver lamps too. A shame for such a lovely space and the amount paid for the night. The room of itself is a lovely size, nice windows and view. Thank you.

The rooms are clean and neat but unbelievably hot, and the windows cannot be opened beyond a crack and the pillows are small and uncomfortable. To add to it there's security lighting pointed straight at some of the rooms. The staff seemed hassled and service was very, very slow

Stayed here for the night of 21 May, looking forward to having a drink and chefs special before a nice nights sleep. The place was in darkness at 4.15 pm. I was provided with my key and made my way to the room, no lights in the corridor so had to use a torch to find the room and unlock the door. As the pub side was obviously closed (this hadn't been explained when booking) I had to go out to get something to eat. When I got back an hour and a half later the front door was locked, and it hadn't been explained to me how to get back in. Eventually found the back door, no lock on the door, so the corridors to the rooms were available for the whole world to get to. On waking I was expecting a nice breakfast before my long walk ahead to Golden Cross, but the 'breakfast' area was locked and no food available. I then tried checking out, no staff in the Inn so nowhere to leave my key as couldn't get to the reception area (where I was told to leave the key), so had to leave my room unlocked and the key in the room.

Grotty, dated and dirty room. The place was like a cave, all the lights turned off. My room had no shower or bathroom, one assumes it was shared facilities (not mentioned on the website booking) Didn’t stay long enough to find those shared facilities. The only facilities the room had were a disgusting toilet in one corner and a dirty sink. There was odd signage everywhere listing do’s & don't’s, including no food to be consumed hot or cold not purchased from the hotel, which didn’t look like it had produced any food for years. It was at that point and the prospect of a night in this nightmare I checked out and gave the owner the key back, I was in the room less than 20 minutes, it was that bad. I get budget, but even the cheapest hotel should be clean and welcoming. This was not. Booked the Premiere Inn down the road. Should of looked a little closer at the listing, it’s a beautiful building from the outside in a great location, but inside it really is past it’s prime, and that’s being kind.

This is the worst hotel i have ever stayed in. Firstly hotel owner shuts up shop and goes home at 8,if you arrive for check-in after this time, the hotel is locked and you cant get in. We had to get the pizza shop next door to call him and let us in. Apparently he left a voicemail on my mobile to let ourselves in through the backdoor and help ourselves to the room, the key is inside the bedroom, whilst our 1 night stay, met other people wandering around cluless,it was almost comical like mr bean is running the hotel. Then when we finally got into our room, our toilet had not been cleaned, there was poo in the toilet and other human bodily stuff in the sink and shower . There were no hand towels, although he had left bath towels, there was another family wandering about looking for towels,as they had no towels . There was no cover on the quilt. Thick layer od dust on everything including the tea cups. Terrible hotel.Do not stay here!!!!!! Only gave one star as it the minimum otherwise this is no star

We booked to stay last night and I honestly would have rather stayed in the car! The owner charged more than the internet price as we had to move the booking from lockdown and we might have been OK with that if the following weren't issues: No heating, freezing cold room No tea and coffee facilities No evening meals as the chef decided to go home - even though we were in the bar asking for food No food allowed in room (so we couldn't go and get anything and bring it back either) No breakfast available, despite their website saying available on request No-one there in the morning and we were locked in - so had to find our way out through the service door One towel in the bathroom, which was all falling apart, flooring and tiles either missing or coming away. Very expensive bar - ordinary red wine £23 a bottle Treated like they were doing us a favour letting us stay. All in all a totally horrible experience and made to feel entirely unwelcome. The owner was offering to drive people around despite obviously having a fair amount to drink (in fact he was having an argument with one of the young bar staff about being capable of driving) and clearly couldn't give a hoot about any of his customers. Do not book here and if you want to stay in the area try the Brambletye Hotel opposite - we wish we had! The only saving grace was the amazing cafe next door which served us an amazing breakfast.

Fantastic friendly and helpful bar staff. The worst meal we've had in any pub. The fried cod was was so small it looked more like a starter. It was dressed with overcooked frozen shrimps and a few chips. The steak was cooked rare as ordered, but had been put in the pan straight from a very cold fridge and served on a stone cold plate, hence it too was cold. The tomatoes were undercooked and the (apparently) tinned cold mushrooms were just inedible. A watery sauce, possibly pepper, with a skin on the top was served desperately to accompany the steak. A few chips in a warm bowl did not raise the standard of the meal above terrible. We decided to try another hostelry for pudding. All very sad given how pleasant the staff are.

It was the perfect location to meet up with friends from London and the staff were friendly and helpful BUT... the food was very poor. The choice was very limited indeed. My wife is a coeliac and there was no meal she could have as the chips and the potato had gluten in them. The sirloin steaks were not sirloin but were chewy, fatty and massively overpriced. The fish had no recognisable sauce. We complained and were offered free puddings. The apple pie was sent back and came back still frozen and the gateaux was stale. No, not very good. Sadly we won't be going back..

Paid in advance for the room. They matched the internet price. Knew what time we were arriving. Got there earlier. And closed. Called the hotel no answer and no lights on. Luckily Brambletye said they had a room. Come all the way from USA and this happens. To be fair in the morning The owner asked why we had not phoned his mobile. One because we did not have his personal mobile and two they agreed to be open. So we asked for the money back for the night that they had shut early because they had. No customers. They said no, and they were charging us more for the room we did not have. So we took them to the County Court. We also still after 8 months have not recieved an invoice for the food and drinks for our accounts office, the inland revenue and the Vat office, reason ....we do everything in cash... so as per previous people great when we were kids, has slipped to bad. I only gave it one star because there was no facility for a minus number. Oh and the heating was on minimum, the client loved the 70,s decor, which was handy as it was falling off the bathroom walls. Loads more negatives when you walk in it looks like it’s been robbed, nothing on the walls. The person who emailed us was not only illiterate, they made false statements about being open and being with customers. Strange as we live streamed it and time coded it. They also said that there was no proof we had even paid for the room. I did Demi d the young lady I was taking them to court and the confirmation emails, aide memoirs were a dead give away that and the receipt she sent that we had paid. All in all , pretty poor in this competitive market. If your reviews are this bad you are in serious trouble. Oh and they never paid the court fine. The court sheriffs are collecting the goods or money. Another court action is being filed for our receipt for food after 29 emails, promises and nothing.

We sat outside as the weather was nice, the outside area is ok but nothing particularly special. As you enter the pub, despite it being a nice day, it was dark, cold and dingey, not welcoming at all. We went in to get menus and the man behind the bar served our drinks. When we went to sit down I noticed that I had a large lipstick mark around the rim of my glass, you could hardly have missed it if you were pouring a drink into it! We sent it back and whilst they gave us a new one no one apologised or words to that affect. We both ordered scampi and chips and they arrived quickly. The portions were absolutely minuscule - around 10 chips each and a few pieces of scampi (which were nice but could have done with 3x as many!). It was also served with a very sad looking salad with a few limp smelly pieces of rocket and some olives that had obviously come out of a jar. We ate the small amount of food we were served but I was hungry again in about half and hour! So disappointing. I have eaten here before in the past and had a lovely meal but I won’t be returning to the Chequers. I would avoid if you want anything other than a drink sat out the front.

At 5.15pm when we were about an hour away a man from there called to ask what type of room we had booked a single, double or twin and he informed us they were closing because they did not have any customer - (I wonder why) and therefore there would be no food or bar available tonight. He was extremely rude - so much for customer service. We of course cancelled our room and asked for a refund let’s see if we get our money back. No wonder they get such poor reviews. In a village where one of our pubs has shut down due to the greed of the brewery you would hope the owner of the Chequers would see the opportunity rather than continue to literally take the p@ss. Not here, no chance. From the outside the pub looks charming but inside you soon start to think you've made a wrong move coming in. The pub itself is dark and gloomy and I was astonished at the service offered. The young woman behind the bar struggled to find wine glasses and then wine. The glasses were eventually located and filled with a bottle of supermarket plonk. The glasses had no measurement lines on them, which I think is illegal. I asked for some nuts as well and after staring into space for a full minute the barmaid blurted out a random amount of money was due. I pointed out that the figure she had quoted was made up (it came to an odd number, over 12 quid) and she couldn't tell me how much the wine was per glass, and looked embarrassed. I suggested she had just made up the number and a weird man at the bar told me to stop being rude. He got short shift from me and I paid up because the whole thing was embarrassing and weird. Meanwhile a young Italian family were complaining their fish was off to a chef who couldn't seem less bothered. We at outside and the chef sat near us chainsmoking and looking generally unhygienic. To call this place a shambles insults shambles everywhere. Being ripped off is bad enough but to add insult to injury the wine was pretty rubbish too. I will not visit again. Such a shame as this should and could be a brilliant pub but its falling apart and staffed by a team who combined incompetence with low theft and food that is past its sell by date. Truly terrible.

It was very dark and gloomy inside and didn’t smell very nice. When our eyes got accustomed to the gloom we noticed a staff member behind the bar. He must have seen us standing there, but eventually I had to call out to get his attention and to ask for a dinner menu. It was just basic pub grub, so we decided not to bother. We subsequently asked locals about where to eat in Forest Row and a few turned their noses up when we asked about The Chequers. Such a shame that it feels neglected and tired and does not appear to live up to the promise of its lovely exterior. I can’t comment on the rooms as we were staying elsewhere.

Fortunately didn't stay at the hotel, but was camping locally, and entered the pub as for a visit to the local town. Entered to pub to find an Old English pub which seemed quite nice, good weather outside so thought it'll be nice to have a cheeky pint outside in the sun. Entered the pub where we were served by an elderly gentlemen, who appeared absolutely clueless. Firstly he began to pour the wrong pint after I asked for a Guinness, then when asked for a vodka Diet Coke, he said "coke" so we said no vodka Diet Coke, he said "vodka Coke" so we said no, vodka Diet Coke, before the other member of staff next to him repeated what we ordered before he eventually got it right. He then poured the Coke half full, before handing it over. The elderly man then charged me £10.25p for a Guinness and single vodka Diet Coke!!!! Talk about having to remortgage your house for two drinks, we live in London and even their prices aren't as outrageous as this pub. We'd have been declared bankrupt if we asked for a double. After being robbed, we won't be returning.

My husband checked us in earlier in the day and there were no rooms ready so he couldn't leave our things. When we arrived back late after a wedding, we found a very old-fashioned, dingy, tired room, which at least was clean. For £75 a night I expected a bit more for breakfast the next morning than 'help yourself' tiny boxes of cereal, packaged croissants, drinks, cutlery etc set up in a completely disorganised way at the side of the room. If there was someone to clear anything away we never saw them, and were left in general shock by the quite frankly crappy way in which the guests were left to 'get on with it'.It's such a shame as the building looks really interesting from the outside, but unfortunately this hides the dismal 70's interior which is badly in need of renovation. Visited this establishment following a countryside walk with the family. My main concern was the attitude of the barman/owner throughout our visit. It was a painful encounter from the moment we walked in. I ordered a round of drinks and ciabattas, the man serving looked throughly fed up with me and my complex order, first impressions concerned us. I tried to improve on the situation knowing we would meet again when coming to pay so tried to exchange in some light conversation, but this failed miserably so decided to head outside to my family to hand out the drinks and await our ciabattas. £7.50 for a cheese and ham ciabatta with no salad, chips seemed a tad pricey. When the food arrived we all looked at each other with disappointment but to be fair they were tasty albeit basic. We went to pay and queried the cost as the man behind the bar didn't provide a bill just a piece of paper with scribble on it with no cost.?I knew 4 ciabattas would be £30 and the bill came to £59, this jumped out to me as expensive as this suggested the remaining £19 was for the two pints, a half pint of Diet Coke and a white wine spritzer. I had nothing to lose at this point so asked if he could let us know the cost of the drinks and we were advised a pint of Harvey's £5, white wine spritzer £6 and half pint diet Coke £3. We thought this was pricey and when taking into account the slurry attitude from the moment we walked in I suggested it wasn't good value. This feedback seemed to anger the man as he quizzed if we ever eat out, to which I explained we do eat out at well regarded places in the area and this was simply a blip, one we will take every measure not to repeat. A shame as the pub from the outside looks appealing but unfortunately the service was awkward and at times unpleasant.

Other than that there were pizzas made to order. We only wanted a snack, and the only things on offer were ciabattas, with about 4 different fillings. We ordered one each. They were very flat and quite small, and the only addition was a very small handful of salad leaves with balsamic vinegar on it. There were £7 each. Very poor for that price. We will be returning! If I had to make a criticism, the only thing I would have changed is that when ordering a bottle of red wine, we would have preferred to have larger glasses!

The only common point with cuisine nouvelle is the quantity and the price. The food is just fine and the service is rather slow (one hour wait and we were the only customers). AVOID!Fortunately there is a Tesco in the street in case you are still hungry.

Went to eat in this pub , no food available, went over the road to the Brambletye, thank god as the chef from the chequers was drinking at the bar. Would you let a man cook for you after downing 5-6 pints? NO Is the answer, lets hope he doesn't get in a car after , never will I return , you should be ashamed of yourself, and if he does get in a car I hope the police are waiting , how irresponsible and dangerous

Standing outside the pub after parking I felt a warm fuzzy feeling come over me, this (I thought) would be a WONDERFUL PUBSadly, it wasn't :-(£5 Mulled Wine 175ml (not the usual 250ml) - acrid flavour, unappetising appearance and not strained (so left with lumps of star anise, orange pith and cloves in the mouth)Real ales sampled:Sussex Best Bitter ABV 4.0% - First pint seemed to look/taste ok (no complaints)Second pint seemed cloudy (for some reason?) returned to barmaid who changed it for a:Harvey Christmas Ale ABV 7.5% - (less cloudy than the first - but not 'right')I drank as much as I didn't want to return a second pint. This pub COULD BE SPLENDID but serious attention needs to be paid to toilets, decor, bar area and beer quality/range. After 20 years in the industry I could turn this place round in 12 months into a absolutely cracking hotel/bar/gastro pub but will await invitation/salary. As a free piece of advice, drop into one of the following pubs in the area to get some ideas and of how to bring some much needed VA VA VOOM back into this masterpiece an establishmentThe Three Pigeons Pub, Guildford... Wheatsheaf Inn, Cuckfield... The Crown, Turners Hill or the 6 Bells, HorleyON THE UPSIDE, the blonde barmaid in short denim skirt (possibly eastern European) was convivial, engaging and seemed to care about customers, making an effort to show hospitality and prompt table serviceSad to be leaving this review

I'll be honest, we came in here because everywhere else was full, but we were really pleased we gave it a try.I think there might be a new chef or something - but the food was wonderful and not at all what we had expected from the outside. The staff were all really friendly and even a mix up with our card couldn't spoil the evening (advice to chequers - sort out your tab system). The inside could probably do with some work and a bit of a spruce up, but it's an old building so there's probably only so much you can do. I hope more people give it a chance and try their new menu as we were very plesantly surprised.

I have visited this pub for drinks many times but have not eaten there so can not comment on the food. The drinks are over priced, being more expensive than the other pubs in the village. However the atmosphere is nice and friendly, and the bar staff always greet you with a smile and are very polite.

As a pub it is nice, but we visited last Saturday afternoon for a quick sandwich. The brown bread cheese sandwiches were dry, poor and cost £6 each. I had a cheese baguette and was shocked to receive one of those cheap baguettes you get from a supermarket that you warm up when you want to use it. These cost about 40p for two. I paid £6 for one with a little grated cheese and a bit of rocket at the side. Wish I had gone to Greggs instead!

Overpriced basic food!! Paid £3.50 for a portion of chips, well 12 chips actually! Baguette appeared to be cheap packeted meat, not 'roast' turkey as described on the menu. Poor customer service and a rip off !!

We met with a large group of family and friends for Breakfast as we do most years. Non of us were made aware of changes requiring a log in to park. It is not usual practice here in rural Sussex. Failed to notice any signage as it was raining very hard. Received a £100 parking fine today. Despite a good breakfast this seems very harsh treatment of loyal customers and I shall not be recommending The Kings Arms to any local residents again.

I have already reviewed this in the main hotel site. The drawing rooms are lovely, comfortable chairs, beautiful view, BUT the food and wine by the glass were truly awful. Very poor quality and very expensive. Never again.

We moved to Pevensey recently and The Red Lion is our new “local”. It’s warm and inviting, the staff are lovely and the food is always brilliant, portion sizes are good and quality of food is on point. Prosecco deals would be amazing as it does put us off slightly the price of a bottle compared to Tesco next door but if you want a night out then it is what it is! We are regulars and enjoy our time here. Music on a Friday/Saturday night would be great instead of Sundays but that’s just us im sure others like it on a Sunday.
