What an amazing find. A friendly and welcoming pub with the name of my favourite author. Stopped in for a refreshing drink mid walk. I will be back.

Fantastic downstairs venue for a party, we had our daughter's 30th Surprise party here. It's a good lay out in there, not just an oblong room. Has a downstairs bar in the room & they provided tables for our buffet that we brought in (a lot of places won't let you do that), The lighting system is great & perfect area to set up a DJ. Huge thanks to the lovely , welcoming landlord & his friendly staff.

This is hands down the worse pub if you can call it that I’ve been to! More like a drug den or an ask frank meeting ! The owner / landlord chewing his face off his wife / worlds stroppest woman looked stoned and was not ashamed of telling people I assume regulars that she was high I witnessed dealing of drugs on straight at the bar ! Between the landlord and some man I who wasn’t to shy relating to most of the pub what he had I believe he said he had the good s***honestly how have the police not shut this place down ? I have contacted the police and other authorities

Some friends and I spent our first evening of a weekend in Worthing at the Charles Dickens pub, and were overwhelmed by the generosity and hospitality of the staff. The people were so friendly, the drinks were reasonably priced, and the whole evening was great fun. Recommend for an night out on the town!

Yet again... Another night of torment, living within earshot if this place. When the live music is on, its a sodding nightmare for the residents.... Thump thump thump all evening, sounds as if they're playing in our living room. When the doors are left open it's a living hell and don't get me started on the punters... Why oh why do they have to scream and tell outside the pub until the early hours.... There is no respect and no control.

Richard, last review 18th August. You should be one of the residents living close to this pub!! So inconsiderate. The noise is horrendous, at the moment we have to keep our windows shut due to the fact that there is loud, terrible music on in the pub and they leave the doors open, the racket is unbearable. The punters seem to think it's necessary to shout and swear even though they're sitting next to each other. People sitting outside til 2am, making a noise. No control. It's a bloody nightmare.

Wow, In the process of moving to the coast came across this really interesting space. Run and staffed by a family who are committed to make something of what is a fantastic space. What an amazing space. I understand they have plans to make it food available. But you could eat here and not be bothered by anyone else. You could have a party here and not annoy anyone else in the pub. Let alone the neighbours. You can chat to friends and not be bothered by anyone else, as the expanse of nooks and crannys take you back to the Charles Dickens novels you once read and you can relive this here. I believe this is a wonderful place. Come enjoy ignore all the previous reviews it has changed and you should be part of that progression to hanging out in the place this is going to be.

What was once a lovely Pub, is now awful, serving rough real ales, and it was murky. The Barrel was empty. Prices gone through the roof, Nearly £9, for 2 Beers, a pint of Guiness, and Pint of Cider! Needless to say I will not be returning. Yesterday 28th July was the Bus Rally, and Car Festival, and years gone by this pub was full, and doing Sunday Lunches, which were great.none of that now.Just a run down shack!!

Going downhill at a very fast rate. Such a shame, this used to be a lovely pub with good food. Dirty toilets, dirty tables, staff do not care. The Rose and Crown or the Hare and Hound are so much better with nicer clientele, and staff who care and are pleasant. So unless you are prepared to slum it don't bother........

We didn't visit, we unfortunately live within earshot of this pub. Why do the staff let their customers yell, shriek, shout, swear and scream outside the pub til late at night? It's like a crazy children's playground. There is a garden at the back, send them out there!! Why does the landlord let bands play at the front of the pub? The noise is horrendous for those living nearby. The pub is large enough for them to play at the back. I pity the people buying expensive flats at the new Mccarthy and Stone next door......

The Charles Dickens pub is situated on the western edge of the Worthing town parking zone, only a few hundred yards from the promenade and the sea. One wishes that all reviews could be positive but our visit was not a pleasant experience. The next paragraph explains why. On entering the pub at 12.15 it was completely empty. There was an extremely strong smell of bleach through the pub, which was unpleasant. It does mean that cleaning had been taking place but I suggest this is done earlier in the day to avoid a lingering smell at opening time. The back doors were wide open but with an outside temperature of only 12C. This may have been to dissipate the smell but the entire establishment was uncomfortably cold and there was no heating; at least the radiators were stone cold. We had to keep our coats on throughout. There were three real ales available but these were delivered at very cold 'lager' temperatures, which shouldn't happen. My friend and I chose different brews but both were cloudy and one was mediocre and the other tasted horrible and was taken back. It was clear that the barmaid, although pleasant, had little 'beer' knowledge and had failed to 'pull through' a pint or two through the beer line at the start of the session, effectively serving last night's ale. More ale was pulled through, which then became clear and fresh. During the lunchtime session only four other people entered the premises. We left after having just the one pint, the cost of which was industry norm at £3.85 (if you can believe what now appears to be the outrageous 'norm'). Based on our experience we would not revisit.

There are a small group of drunken people with dogs outside the front door, there are drunken women swearing in the bar and the two beers we tried wer both off. The barman readily replaced them but even the clean glasses had that slightly vinegar smell which indicates either the glasses or beer lines are not being cleaned properly. Despite the pub not being all that busy, tables went uncleared and the whole place has an air of slight neglect. Any pub that has signs in the toilets warning about drugs has a problem. There are plenty of places better than this in Worthing or Goring.

There was talk of turning this place around but sadly I see no evidence of it. After running the gauntlet of loud smokers crowding around the front door, enter the lower lounge. Watch out for the aggressive dogs running around the pub loose. Find the bar via a throng of people who were banned from every pub in the town centre. Get a drink (no food served) try to chat above the din of a drunk attempting to play the piano and the dogs barking. Such a shame, this could be run as a pleasant place but it still hasn’t happened.

I’ve found the new managers to be welcoming and feel they’re making great changes in the pub. However they need to keep a watchful eye on their clientele as my partner and I were targeted this evening by some very drunk loud homophobic men who seemed to be looking for confrontation. The ale is very good, the staff very friendly, the food well cooked. so what has gone wrong, it used to be very busy over the lunch time and it was very quiet even for January. The menu may be a fault, the choices are the same amount as years gone by but the type of choice has changed from 'down to earth' pub grub to a more discerning pallet. While this is not wrong, it is just not expected in a pub like the CD. Not sure if I will visit again, maybe give it a couple of months and see.

I'm sitting in the place writing this. Just popped in for lunch....what a disappointment . I should have kept on walking. The tables haven't even been cleaned from last night. Beer stains, sticky and covered in candle wax. The toilet is no better. This was a wonderful place on my last review. The food......well....I had the chilli burger I so enjoyed before. It was over cooked to the point of being dry. I would have quite liked a fork to eat my chips with.....but I did get two dirty knives. The salad was nice and fresh.the chilli sauce was quite hot. The wife's steak was cooked good. The peppercorn sauce was not very good. I wish I could be more positive as its only round the corner from me. If I had served this meal I would have been horrified to place it on a dirty table.......not just plonk it down without a care. I do hope standards get back up because this is a good place. Oh and some heating would be nice as its awkward eating with a coat on. Sorry folks only saying as it was on the day.

I travelled to Worthing to visit a friend and this pub was fairly close to her home. Turned out to be a huge mistake! There was no atmosphere to speak of and NO HEATING on a cold night! We ended up wearing our coats indoors. There was a small electric heater on the floor (on carpet, the kind that should be attached to a wall - health and safety anyone?) which emitted virtually no heat. We started with a glass of wine each. My friend asked for a small glass of red and medium white. When she pointed out that the bar person had got the sizes muddled, she just threw out some of the red wine. The glass had no ml markings, and did not seem to be 125ml of wine, although she claimed it was. The wine itself was so disgusting I couldn't drink it. We then thought a soft drink couldn't go wrong, so I ordered two orange and lemonades. Whilst the girl was serving me, she continued to 'train' another girl who was with her. She didn't seem to think it necessary to lower her voice whilst instructing her new member of staff to lie to customers if asked for whiskey recommendations. She advised her to 'just recommend the same whiskey to each different person. They won't know. And be confident, they will trust you.' Charming. Obviously she should have been concentrating more on making that complicated drink I had ordered because when we got back to the table we realised she had put soda water in our orange juice, not lemonade. My friend took the drinks back and told her this, to which she replied 'oh yeah, it is soda water.' So she clearly knew she'd made the wrong drink but didn't think to fix it before I took them away.Definitely not going back and I will be letting everyone know what an awful experience we had. Fortunately, we were able to laugh about it afterwards!!

This pub has gone so down hill since the old manager Malcolm left, where as it used to be a pleasure to visit now it is depressing due to lack of love for this pub on the odd occasion i visit, Malcolm customers (though not many remaining) hang on to the hope that this pub will regain its originality , The bar supervisor runs the pub on her own for a young girl for two years experience she should run the pub, she knows more about running this pub than the new management ever will. Give her this pub and all regulars will back this up, She works every hour possible to make the pub run smoothly, i wonder if the owner realises what she does for this pub, The other original bar staff knows everyone's drinks and are very polite and considerate we wouldn't change the staff for the world however when the pub is closed due to no beer the staff are the ones left to face the complaints not the management. It has lost the fun ambiance and energy that this pub used to have.

I made the mistake of eating twice in this pub. The first time I let them off because they had just changed hands and I thought that the staff were getting used to the cooking equipment etc - hence burnt food. However, the second time had no excuse. The nachos were so deep fried the oil was oozing out of them, I could only eat a handful ,and at £7 for a bowl full, I felt ripped off. Then I spend the rest of the day feeling so horribly ill that I nearly had to go home from work.Don't waste your money on the food, but the drinks are ok.

Um bar muito aconchegante, com um jardim externo no fundo para os dias de verão, ambiente agradável com uma decoração de muito bom gosto. Excelente para tomar uma cerveja e bater papo, muito tranquilo.

I have been going to this pub since the last four years, the service is fantastic and the food is excellent. It Is always clean and despite prices being a bit too high I personally think is good so it keeps the right people in the Pub. I highly recommend this place, now that Malcolm left management, I hope the new manager can keep with the high standards.

My visit in this pub today was singly the worst dining experience I have ever had. We waited over 50 minutes for a mac and cheese, cheese and ham sandwich, bangers and mash and cod fishcakes. When I asked where the food was and my 6 and 8 years old children were getting incredibly hungry I was told you're next we're busy. At this point there was only three other people at an adjoining table who'd been waiting an hour for there food - no-one else was eating at all. I waited another five minutes and asked to see the manager. The manager came and said 'yes, what?' I explained that I wanted the sandwich and mac and cheese i'd ordered for my children and they could cancel and refund the meals I ordered for my 73 yr old mother and me. He said he couldn't understand why I was doing that as I needed to understand that 'cooking food from fresh' took time. He tutted as he said it and walked off. I said that there is no cooking time in a cheese and ham sandwich and fresh mac and cheese - 10 mins tops from scratch and not to insult my intelligence. Next a kitchen assistant came out of the kitchen, glared at me walked to the bar and on her way to the kitchen said 'thanks so much' really sarcastically and went into the kitchen. At this point I got my two children together and we left. I went to the bar for a refund, which the manager didn't want to give me, but gave me back eventually - in fact tge lady tending the bar refunded me as even she said she couldn't believe how we'd been treated. Through all of this my 6 yr old daughter was sobbing and begging for her food and the arrogant idiot stood there smirking at her. As I left, he said loudly 'oh so you're leaving are you' to my back. I went straight back to the bar and told him to would post my experience on every available review page I could find as I was truly disgusted by the treatment and service I had received. The alleged manager was rude, dismissive, aggressive, unfriendly and unprofessional. They were NOT child friendly despite stating that they 'welcome families with children' and in the face of a hungry six year old crying he all but laughed at her. Good luck to all at the pub you are going to need it as your business won't last two minutes with staff like that working for you. Utterly shocking.

Quite a surprise on entering, not as expected from the outside. Several comfortable rooms on different levels.

We were a large group in the Grill part of the restaurant. The main problem was that the food was pre-ordered!The choice we made was bad but the actual food preparation was even worst, bland, poorly prepared main dishes!A better cook is needed in this restaurant. We do not recommend this restaurant for an evening out with a large group.

It was very handy that they serve food till 10pm including veggie options. I liked the nice milky cafe lattes. There are a variety of rooms as well as a patio garden at the back - and a trditional skittle table.

We went there to eat. Ordered burger and steak respectively. Burger was so full of filler it was barely edible. Steak tough and tasteless. Massive portions af rubbish food, essentially. We won't be darkening their doors again.

The best thing about this pub is the beer garden. Very large and great for summer although most of the tables needed clearing and there was dog poo under our table! Good wine list, if not a tad pricey. Extensive whiskey selection! Very impressive. The barmaid could've cracked a smile too!

Have eaten here on the past and enjoyed the food but now we have a horrible selection on laminated cards, always a bad sign.Printing out the menus gives you a chance to change and update, or get a proper blackboard with interesting choices. At the moment no-one would choose to eat there. Why has this place gone so downhill??Ps staff could do with more training, tables left dirty, not paying enough attention to the customers, not knowledgeable about products.

Easily the best pub in Worthing for a whisky, gigantic range and a nice selection of real ales. The food menu could do with some different dishes, but the food itself is good.Lovely beer garden round the back

It is a very nice pub in Heene Road which is just off the seafront and Worthing. The staff are very nice in there and they do great food reasonably priced and large portions. Also a huge selection of malt whisky's. It has a big beer garden out the back and seating at the front. Well worth a visit.

Went there recently and can honestly say that as a pub, the Charles Dickens is one of Worthing's best - one of the few places with a decent ambiance and atmosphere without Sky TV everywhere. Good service from friendly bar staff and great selection of ales and spirits. Lots of nooks and crannies and a really nice warm vibe to it and a well maintained garden/patio area which is really nice in summer. Food is outstanding - certainly the best I have come across in any pub and many restaurants not just in Worthing. Reasonably priced and portions are more than generous. Most of it is cooked fresh on the premises and sourced locally. Have eaten there and never had a bad experience. Took my partner and our respective elderly mothers there for a pre-Xmas meal which was superb.

This pub is one of the most unusual we've ever been in. Don't expect luxury, it's really quite scruffy in many ways. That's Scruffy, not Grubby! It looks for all the world like someone has opened up shop in their house; it's all little rooms, up & down stairs. There are some quite fruity characters among the regulars as well! It all goes to make an intriguing mix.But it is all about the lovely food. Good, home cooked, hearty food, well cooked and served piping hot. The Lamb shanks and Sunday roast come highly recommended.

I should have left this revew last year but never got round to it. We held our engagement party in the function room at the Charles Dickens. the room was FOC plus we had our own private bar person. The catering was done by the pub and for the price we paid was brilliant, there was loads of food and infact think we could have catered for less numbers and there would still be plenty. The pub arranged for my mp3 player to work through the PA system so i didnt have to organise a DJ at extra cost. I would say to anyone who is looking for a function room to use this one.

We have visited the Dickens before and had lovely meals, this time however we were unlucky. We had two evening and two lunch times were the food was good.On the Saturday evening four of us went. Two of the meals were inedible whether because of the butcher or the chef we wont know as the chef would not speak to us.They did not take any money for it but it did spoil our evening. We will have to think twice before we go again

Have visited this pub many times over the last couple of years, I understand what people say about the manager I've had a run in with him over how to make a cocktail for my wife. He is aggressive and I was informed if I didn't like it he could bar me, which is a shame as it is a lovely pub. I just don't think he has people skills. I agree with other comments it is a good pub loads of places to hide away and have a chill out evening. Have never tried the food so no comment, crisps and nuts taste good. They also have a bar billards table which is nice to see. Would recommend

I had my wedding reception here in June2011 (I'm new to trip advisor) and I can't praise the staff and manager of how much they did a brilliant job. We booked to have our reception somewhere else but due to unforeseen circumstances we had to have it somewhere else, and it's the best thing that ever happened. The pub is beautiful, just off the beach, gorgeous garden and just a general warm atmosphere. The food was to the highest standard and if ever I had any questions or needed to pop by, The manager was always there to answer my calls. The staff were friendly and kept everything well organised. Also excellent value for how many people was catered for.Thank you Charles Dickens for being part of wedding and help make it a special day for us. We have also had a couple of staff do's here and they have always been very wellOrganised and a brilliant atmosphere. Defiently worth a visit

Been here 3 times now. Eaten once, a soggy toastie so will not go for food. Really good beer if you like real ale, well kept, good, clear and delicious. A wide range too and all of them looked after They are, however, Central London prices and not in any way competitive. £3.55 for a pint of Theakstons is ok in W1 but not in Worthing. Maybe thats why I watched the match on the big screen with only 3 other customers!Or maybe everybody is put off by the truly appalling service one receives at this pub. Especially from the badly dressed, young man who seems to be a fixture behind the bar. He thinks he is doing you a favour by condescending to serve you but gets his own back by talking to either another member of the bar staff or by forgetting to say hello, please, thankyou and good bye. He epitomises everything that used to be a running joke about being served by English people and he would not be out of place as Basil Fawltys assistant. I will go back again. They have sky sports and a nice garden and they serve good beer. But I will drink it slowly, never take my glass back to the bar and leave as soon as my reason for visiting is over. And I will NEVER offer the bar staff a drink until they are trained to serve properly. For the record, I was a publican in England for over 25 years. I have worked in hotels, restaurants and served the public all my working life, 10 years of that in USA. I know about service and lack of it. This is one of the worst examples of bad service I have encountered.Buck up Mr. Manager, you have a great cellar, a lovely garden and a nice pub. Train your staff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have been to this pub several times but now would never go to this pub. Our first experince of bad service was when I ordered a cup of tea for my wife and the tea cup had not been washed properly and it tasted like bleach when we commented about this they were very dismissive. The second time was when we went for Sunday lunch after choosing my wife's engagement ring, they were very rude and barked the choices of meat that were on offer 'Lamb or beef' and when it arrived it was cold with congiled gravy - not at all pleasant. Avoid this place there are many other public houses with better food and service on the seafront such as the Burlington.

We were going to eat in the cafe, but were put off by the number of uncleared tables. The whole place looked a mess! And it wasn't even a busy time! And the customer toilets ( at least in the gents ) were a disgrace. There was no toilet paper in the WCs, the one soap dispenser was empty and one of the two hand dryers wasn't working.

Very disappointing. Ordered the sausage bap £6.95. Got a dry brioche bun (which I personally don't like), not a bap containing 1.5 small sausages. No relish, garnish. My friend ordered the bacon bap £5.95 - again a dry brioche and a small amount of bacon. The place looked lovely from outside, but service was slow even though it wasn't particularly busy. Maybe we just chose the wrong option, but won't be returning. 😒
