Having read reviews & the menu before we went we had high hopes for our first visit to this restaurant. It did not deliver on food quality or service. The fish & lobster were overcooked & a vegetarian in our party was given mussels cooked with bacon. The service was haphazard with bread to go with our starter coming out after we had finished. We asked for salt & pepper & got 2 pepper mills. The food did not warrant the price so none of our group will be going back or recommending.

Didn't live up to its Google Maps rating nor its prices. The oysters had a bitter/funky aftertaste. The hake and seabass were ok after adding some salt, but nothing jaw dropping (kudos for not oversalting it in the first place though).

So here is the low down on Chapmans: Our advice is to Book over the phone not online. Great locally sourced food prepared with great care. We were lucky enough to get Superwoman as our maître d, nothing was too much trouble from our first contact to leaving the restaurant. The décor was simple and clean with a friendly welcome which always sets your experience off on the right track. The Starters were what you would expect at a top notch by the sea eatery. The main course was staggered in timing to perfection and presented simply with the food doing all the work as it was professionally prepared with basic effective garnishing. Chapmans is a must if visiting Canterbury. Totally recommend.

We ate here as part of a friend's special birthday celebrations. We'd booked for lunch and all fancied the Tasting menu, which was terrific value even before we realised it was half price that day. The food was incredible. Ross is a talented chef. Alysha looked after us perfectly. Nothing was too much trouble. They easily swapped out a starter one of our party with a crab allergy for equally delicious prawns. Presentation and flavours were amazing. If only I lived nearer.

We came for our wedding anniversary on a Friday night. We were the only ones here, but the service and the atmosphere was very nice. We had the tuna tartar and the scallops, followed by roasted hake fillet and monkfish wellington. All of the fish courses were full of flavour and good size portions. The winner for me was the monkfish. The desserts were also really tasty. The chocolate delice tasted like proper real chocolate but the cinnamon bun takes the cake. The portions are generous. I think the main courses are well priced, starter and dessert on the higher end of the spectrum. But the food is worth it. Will definitely come back again!

Order the soft shell crab as starters, with seabass and the surf and turf for mains. The lobster could be more fresh as it was quite flaky but the seabass and the soft shell crab are superb. I rarely write bad reviews but eating out is a treat and if you feel you’ve wasted your money, people should be warned. I was Very disappointed with food and service. Greasy and bland food poorly cooked; lack lustre waiting staff, sticky tables and dirty glasses. I could forgive the tables and service if the food was remotely good, but it wasn’t, it was dire. Cloying potato risotto, soft shell crabs oozing oil, tasteless soggy scallops, overcooked haddock. It was vile.

Looking to try some seafood in Canterbury, our group of 4 decided to make a booking for this restaurant and were incredibly pleasantly surprised upon visiting it. The dishes at this restaurant were very creative and we could all tell that the chef put a lot of effort into them. Some highlights of our meal were the fried oysters and the fish and chips, which had batter that was light and crispy. The runny yolk from the deep fried egg was a perfect fit with the sauce used for the asparagus. The ice cream that came with our dessert was not too sweet and tasted strongly of white chocolate, fitting nicely with the warm cinnamon buns under it. The service was wonderful too. The waitress was incredibly kind and talkative, telling us about life in Canterbury and recommending sightseeing spots for us in the local area. Upon complimenting the chef after we finished our mains, he even increased the portion sizes of our desserts for us! Overall, this was a delightful dining experience and if we ever come back to Canterbury, we'll be sure to return.

Monkfish Wellington was great. However everything else like vegetable ratatouille was very mediocre. Plates were dirty and oily and waiters were very unresponsive. Waited over 30min for food but most items came cold. The baked mussels were very small and full of sand and grit which made it very unpleasant to eat. Toilet door is a hazard, it clashes with the kitchen door and hit my hand causing it to bruise. Surprised the reviews are high. If I wasn’t in a rush for the train I would have complained and refunded the mussels directly.

Awful, utterly disappointing, Over priced, Awful food. Horrendous customer service. Do not waste your money going to this restaurant. Ordered Lobster Curry, Had no lobster in, Was served with chunks of trout ( trout not on menu ) £40 for a Lobster Curry with no Lobster is extremely overpriced. The ribs are pure fat, 0 meat on them. Over booked for the amount of stuff in the restaurant. The staff on the night was so rushed and did not provide a decent service. We contacted the restaurant when they was next open( due to staff clearly being too busy to deal with a complaint) was laughed at by a so called manager when I raised my concerns. I was told would receive a call back, 3 days after being told I would be contacted I called again… The same manager laughed again as me not being called back. When I said I find it extremely upsetting and rude to be continually laughed at.. I was the hung up on!! Nobody would then answer my calls. I was then contacted by a Man who claimed to be the owner who done nothing by patronise me and talk down to me. I am still waiting for him to contact me back ( 1 week ago) as I was told cctv needs to be looked into? Makes no sense at all. Avoid this place at all costs. The food is horrendous and the customer service is non existent. Utterly disgusted at establishments like this taking peoples hard earned money and providing such an awful experience. £150 for two people and 2 courses should be 5* food and service in my eyes! If I could have given this 0* that is exactly what they would have got.

On this birthday lunch occasion, the service was a little flat, perhaps because we were the only people in the restaurant; however it could have been better as the waitress did not seem busy at all. The food was nice enough from the lunch menu which 2 of us chose from. We also ordered from the main menu and starters etc. Our previous visit was in the evening and it was to celebrate passing another year of uni. I was offered a complimentary glass of bubbly and the table was decorated. It made everyone feel more welcomed and we proceeded to order cocktails and bubbles to go with our seafood platter etc. I think the little details matter when celebrating special days at a restaurant. We would go back as the food was nice and we enjoy seafood; but perhaps in the evening again next time.

My wife, daughter and I came to your restaurant for lunch on the 19th December 2023. We come here on special occasions as the food is normally exemplary. We were all particularly looking forward to it as my wife had just finished her treatment for breast cancer and this was the first time she has been out. However, what followed was anything but a pleasurable experience. Whilst the oysters were well prepared as always, we then moved on to the crab cakes and potted trout as a starter. The description of the potted trout was with pickled vegetables and the portions were large and the butter not hardened as I would expect with potted dishes and the bread was massively disappointing for Chapmans (two pieces of what looked like thinly sliced shop baguette lightly crisped), it used to be freshly baked and artisan. The pickled vegetables consisted of shaved carrot and red onion dumped on top of the terracotta dish, disappointing presentation for a £9.50 starter. My wife tried it and the fish had not been boned properly so she picked out two largish fish bones. The crab cakes were described as using panko breadcrumbs which was not the case. Both my wife and daughter we’re expecting dainty well-presented crab cakes, what they got was two large balls of mostly mashed potato in normal breadcrumbs and swimming in mayonnaise. I was willing to let the above pass and we discussed not complaining as it was our day out, but this was not the Chapmans we’ve been used to. The starters were not inedible, in fact I was happy to take home what wasn’t eaten; however, it was way off the usual Chapman’s standard. We then go on to the main courses and whilst my daughter was happy with her goan fish curry it was poorly presented and just thrown onto a plate; my wife’s lobster and chicken burger consisted of a chicken thigh and non-existent piece of overcooked lobster alongside a small piece of wilted lettuce, but at least the chips looked cooked from scratch which I’d expect at £29.95 for a main. Nevertheless, I expect the standard to be far higher, her main looked like something out of a chain. I now turn to my main course, disgusted sums up how I felt for £55.00. I ordered the filet steak which was described as served with pulled pork, garlic prawns, mac and cheese with chips. My expectation for this price would be separately nicely presented items on a wooden board which Chapmans used to do with the serve and turf options; rare fillet steak (which I ordered) with a separate terracotta pot of garlic prawns, separate pot of home made pulled pork, mac and cheese and the home made triple cooked chips. What arrived I can only describe as an abomination. The steak was hacked into thick slices and medium rare – this is not what I’d ordered. As for the other items, the mac and cheese, pulled pork we’re thrown together in a largish pot with an over cooked prawn (one) placed on top of the mixed mess and the chips had clearly come out of a packet. It looked like leftovers thrown together as we were the last table and thrown on to a plate with a pile of oven chips. The whole disappointing debacle came across as a chef who simply couldn’t be bothered as we were the last table. I sent it back but was still charged for it, instead being offered a complementary glass of wine, coupled with a further gesture of a pot of garlic prawns (this time at least cooked properly) and a portion of chips covered in cheese. This is not Chapmans. This is not the first meal out with my wife and daughter in a year we expected. It has hugely upset and disappointed all of us and we will not be eating here again.

Visiting somewhere, Canterbury, for the first time means educated guesswork when it comes to eating. Chapman's was very, very good, educated guesswork as it is an excellent seafood restaurant. Welcomed with a smile, the restaurant's spacious and light interior coupled with elegant tableware, comfortable seating, and attentive service made one feel not so much at home as at one's posh friends home. Add the food to the equation and the experience becomes one's posh friend who can really cook's home! My food selections were panko crab cakes and whole Dover Sole, a days special. The crab cakes, light and tasty, were on an aoli and balsamic base - delicious. The whole sea bass was cooked perfectly and an easy pleasure to eat - not always the case when it comes to flatfish - with and accompaniment of truffle infused fries, again delicious. If I visit Canterbury again, then Chapman's will be the first restaurant on my itinerary.

Very disappointed by our visit today, having had such a fantastic meal a year ago. It was so ordinary and bland …and expensive. We made the mistake of getting there 10 minutes early so ordered a couple of cocktails (Chapmans Gin bramble and passion fruit martini). In fairness these were very nice but they took our meal order simultaneously, which started to arrive moments later along with our cocktails, which was not ideal. There was a great loaf of bread cut into unappetising quarters with a small pot of butter followed swiftly by the scallops and prawn and salmon cocktail. The scallops were very good but the prawn cocktail (no salmon spotted) was nothing special. As we were still on the the cocktails and the bread and starters had come so quickly, we made a point of asking the waitress to delay our main meal, which seemed to surprise her. After 15 minutes no one had been over to see if we wanted another drink so we called over the waitress to order a bottle of wine. Just as she arrived so did the main courses so just went for a glass of wine instead as already felt rushed. My wife had ordered the hake Kiev. It was dry as an old bone and completely tasteless. Terrible I ordered the whole plaice at £32. Is £32 pounds a lot for a main course (without any sides) these days? I think so so I thought it would be something special. Once again disappointment; a whole fish with a few capers and butter chucked on top. Nothing clever or inventive. We ordered the three vegetables (broccoli , beetroot and essentially new potatoes). All edible but average. We did let the waitress know about our mains who thanked us for our feedback and promised to tell the chef. We declined to take our culinary experience any further so didn’t have a pudding, settled up reluctantly and left feeling short changed.

Great restaurant, attentive service. Sadly no beers on the evening we went! and wines by the glass was limited. The bread for starter/snack looked impressive - you basically get the whole loaf! And it was serviced warm. However it cooled after 2 minutes and the whole thing went rock solid and crispy. You know what I mean if you've ever defrosted or microwaved bread/buns before. So that was disappointing. We also tried the oyster thermidor. It was disgusting and such a waste of money. The server told us it was a white wine sauce, no cheese. But when it arrived it was covered in cheese and MUSTARD! There was so much of it that you couldn't taste anything else. TBH I wish I had sent it back and refused the bill for it. However, the fish and chips and the goan curry were both good mains. Full of flavour, good quality fish and huge servings of each. However, I would say they were a bit light on the lobster which I'm not surprised about. It was meant to be half a lobster, but they had deshelled it and re-stuffed it, with only two mouthfuls mixed into the curry sauce so it looked deceiving. I would, one day, go again but would definitely skip the starters.

On a mini break to Sussex and Kent we were enjoying our second (and final) night in Canterbury. The next morning we were off to Rye and the start of our trek home. Fish is a speciality at this stylish restaurant, and we were both in the perfect mood for fish. We both independently decided on the same starter and main plates: ‘Steamed Mussels’, followed by ‘Lobster and Cod Goan Curry’. The wine I chose was the ‘Il Meridione Catarratto’, a fresh and light coloured white wine. It was full of subtle cirrus fruit notes, quite dry and very pleasant with our fish. The Mussels were very good and the cooking liquor was excellent: much enjoyed. A plea on behalf of future for more bread to be provided, otherwise much of the cooking liquor goes to waste: and that is just a terrible shame. The Goan Curry was just fabulous, quite hot and so, so rich and tasty. Tomato, onions and coconut based sauce with ginger, tamarind, garlic, black mustard seeds, and chillies spiced wit coriander, cumin, turmeric, fenugreek and clove. Delightful with half a really meaty lobster (in the shell) and chunks of lovely fresh cod. Served with white basmati rice and a sprinkle of fresh coriander and fresh lime. I have cooked this at home many times, so I do know it well. This plate was the best example of a Goan Curry I have eaten, it was an absolute delight, and it was all eaten and the plate was cleaned and cleared (apart from the lobster shell). I had to have a dessert because it was crumble (I love crumble) and particularly rhubarb crumble. It was ordered to be served with custard, which is of course the only way to eat any crumble. This crumble and custard was as good and any that I have had and I ate it all and scraped the dish clean. Great dessert!!

There was a competitively priced set lunch menu but I was sufficiently tempted by a caviar-topped prawn cocktail and a technicolour fish stew from the specials board featuring hake salmon prawns and mussels in a gloriously creamy sauce. It seemed churlish not to conclude with a dessert and a chocolate bombe with a raspberry sorbet made for a refreshing and spectacular finish to s memorable lunch. The colour and panache of the cooking stood in contest to the slightly old fashioned surroundings featuring a huge square coffee machine on a counter and a table next to me of posh schoolboys some in wing-collared shirts.

The fish curry is absolutely divine - it’s perfect in every sense and I challenge anybody to find one better. Try it and be prepared to want another one the next day…. And the next.

The food was okay but the service was very good. The Goan Tiger Prawns were really nice but they were more Tandoori than Goan. The Sea Bream dish wasn't as good, as it lacked flavour, there was no truffle taste to it. Pricewise, for the prawns, sea bream and a drink, it's quite expensive. To avoid further disappointment we didn't order more food and went to get more food elsewhere

We visited for a birthday meal out and can honestly say we have a new favourite restaurant. The quality of food and also the innovative menu really sets this a cut above other similar establishments! We enjoyed the lychee mojito cocktails. We had the Scallops and Mussels to start. The best quality mussels we have ever had, that were perfectly tender but not chewy. The broth with the mussels was incredible and we soaked up all the goodness with the incredible bread we had ordered (warm and crusty loaf). The scallops melted in my mouth, I only wished there were more! This was followed by the Lobster Thermidor and Goan curry for main. This curry was to die for and I love to see a restaurant doing something different with lobster! It had an incredible depth of flavour without just the heat you’d usually get. We then had the s’mores shots, which is again something different to the rest and these were really delicious. Followed by the crumble (best ever!) and the white chocolate mousse in a chocolate dome. The crumble had so much flavour, in the fruit and the crumble which usually both parts would just be ‘sweet’, there spices and vanilla which you could taste throughout and the cinnamon ice cream was unique and the perfect accompaniment. The white chocolate mousse was really delicious too! We were kindly given a ‘happy birthday’ plate with a scoop of ice cream and officially had to be rolled home after this! The wait staff were attentive and really friendly! We will definitely be returning, and only wished we had been sooner.

I am being generous with 3 stars because some things saved it like the service was really good, friendly and not intrusive. Also the prawn starter was really special, the wine very drinkable and the fish main good bah the sauce making the fish skin slimy. The let downs where the Sour Dough bread which was more a crusty loaf with fluffy white center and no sour dough loaf in presence. The bug bear was the Wagu burger with lobster. It was really over priced and having to add a side of chips made the price silly. The burger seemed a bit mass produced and the addition of sad looking hash brown (looked also mass produced) gave it a Burger King appearance. Too much mayonnaise and a lack luster salad did not help. Leave the mayo off - too French for my liking. Adding a small finger of battered lobster does not excuse the price. Call me naive but not our first time here and last time it was really good food. I am not the fish eater, so call me naive but was expecting something exceptional at that price point for a burger. If you do not believe me Google how much you can buy a Wagu burger from the supermarkets. The other option was a steak at nearly £50. Would I still recommend Chapman's - yes but fine dining with these prices needs to be that...Oh there is a 12.5% service charge but you can have that removed and pay your own tip.

Absolutely enjoyed our evening here. Ordered the deep-fried cod, pan-seared hake, and scallops, all paired with a white wine. Every dish was beautifully crafted. The cod was fresh, and not your typical fish and chips which may often smell of overused oil. Hake was well-complemented with mushroom sauce. Scallops were soft and melted in our mouths. Slurp. Completed our meal with apple crumble and cinnamon ice cream. We left Chapman's very full and very happy (though a bit poorer). 🤪

I literally don't understand some of the reviews on here!! Chapman's is amazing. Their flavours are stunning and dishes are interesting and fish beautifully cooked. We had fresh oysters, squid, goan curry, sea bream, hake and desserts. Every single dish was beautiful. Incredible talent. Our cocktails were perfect. The staff couldn't have been more accommodating, friendly and enthusiastic. They create such a welcoming environment. My dad loved his birthday, so thank you all for an amazing memorable meal! This restaurant is hard to rate because I had a wonderfully made and delicious Negroni and while most of our food was amazing and cooked perfectly including the grilled oysters and spring roll, they served what may have been Toro tuna sashimi when the menu specified O-Toro. There is a huge difference in the fat content, tenderness, flavor, and price between the grades of toro and it is a let down to not be served the correct cut of fish advertised and more dissapointied they didn't want to fix the situation. I should have been more suspicious when it was spelled wrong on the menu. Besides this gaff, we really enjoyed the other food and cocktails.

Delicious seafood and nice atmosphere. This is a small cosy restaurant with polite and attentive staff with a small variety of fish and seafood, but nicely cooked and served. We didn't have reservation but we still found a table easily. Drinks and desserts are a bit expensive though. For dessert, we had dark chocolate sphere and bamboo and camomile tea. Tip 12.5% included.
