Excellent location for city centre dining. I would recommend the tapas, however not recommend the pork scratching as they appeared out of a packet. The rest was lovely and thoroughly enjoyable at a price that reflects the quality. The customer service was very good. Left feeling full and satisfied.

Came during restaurant week but on Saturday so was usual service rather than the restaurant week menu which was disappointing. Service was poor, the restaurant was busy but not busy enough to cause a 20min wait for water for the table. Drinks were quite nice but again a ridiculously long wait for them. It was really hard to get anyones attention to order food/drinks/the bill which was frustrating, especially given that there appeared to be plenty of staff just standing around? The starter was good but expensive for what it was, the sharing platter. The mains were okay but again expensive for the portion sizes. I had the veggie pad Thai which was quite small and mid, my friends had the sweet and sour, Thai green curry and basil fried rice. All of them said the rice was painfully dry. My friend ordered the pork basil fried rice and was given the chicken, we didn't complain as we were eager to eat our food and leave at this point. On the bill we were charged for prawn crackers that never arrived. This was corrected and the staff were friendly just unfortunately not attentive. Probably wouldn't return, especially if not on restaurant week special offers.

A birthday lunch for my wife. Booking was easy online and I was sent texts to confirm arrangements. Allergy information was collected and dealt with. We had a lovely window table and they had placed a reserved for birthday sign on the table. Not cheap but well worth a visit if you like Thai food.

It's a nice atmosphere but the food is very average for what you pay, which is over the top. Started with tempura vegetable which was actually pretty good. Then the Tamarind Roast Duck which was a bit on the dry side if I'm honest. It's described as coming with vegetables. I ordered a side dish of tenderstem broccoli only to find the Duck arrived already with....tenderstem broccoli. Perhaps the waitress could have mentioned that? Anyway, both sets of broccoli were hard and undercooked. We had 2 drinks and then a bottle of wine. Even after the 35% discount voucher the bill was £135, which I consider over the top for what we got, which was at best, a pretty average Thai meal...

Very disappointed, I have eaten here before several times but this was not up to the standard I had in the past, or expected. Presentation and taste if the food left a lot to be desired, not sure if they have new staff in the kitchen, or they just had too many customers today but do not think I will be visiting here again. Mantra in Newcastle is much better Thai restaurant but a little more out of the way. However I think that the extra effort in getting there would be worth it. Food here was not hot, taste was very so so, presentation was not that great. Gone from a three to four stars restaurant to one star in my opinion.

Disappointing Experience I had high expectations for Chaophraya, but unfortunately, my visit was disappointing. The manager was incredibly rude and unprofessional, which set a negative tone for the evening. Customer service was poor overall, with staff seeming disorganised and inattentive. The service was painfully slow, and to top it off, the prior arrangements we made were not followed through as promised. For the prices they charge, my friends and I expected much better. Sadly, we would not recommend this restaurant based on our experience.

This was an interesting experience at Chaophraya in Newcastle. We visited as a group of eight for a work night out, and while the evening had its highlights, there were also some disappointing moments. First, the food was exceptional. The menu offered an impressive variety of options, and everything we ordered was beautifully presented and full of flavour. It’s clear the kitchen staff take pride in their craft, and the quality of the dishes was a real standout. However, the service didn’t match the same high standard. When our food arrived, several items we’d ordered were missing, and this disrupted the flow of the meal. While the staff were polite, there was a clear language barrier issue, and the lack of attention to detail was frustrating, especially for a larger group where coordination is key. The cocktails were another highlight - expertly made, delicious, and great value with the 2-for-1 offer. Unfortunately, they took far too long to arrive, leaving us waiting longer than expected and detracting from what should have been a seamless, enjoyable evening. Chaophraya has a lot of potential, especially with its fantastic food and drinks menu, but the service needs improvement to match the quality of the dining experience.

Best in town!!!The name “Chaophraya” (เจ้าพระยา) refers to the Chao Phraya River in Thailand, which is the country’s most significant and iconic waterway. I don't mind pay a expensive dinner but always have to be hand by hand with price. I know is a thai restaurant but I get a steak which I ask to be rare medium (it was full cooked and dry). My partner get a curry that in the menu said it was not really spicy but it was as hell. Then with the steak they offer me a side that was "free" that it wasn't. The egg fry rice was soggy and don't really taste like nothing. So we paid £65 for a cheap meat and a curry that was spicy as hell. The place is in a nice area and you have nice views. You can get nice pictures 😂

Having visited previously I was expecting the same level of food and service. Unfortunately this was not the case. The food was not authentic Thai, the Pad Kra Pow was basically chicken fried rice, the chips were the hollow frozen kind and £8.50 for a Chang is simply outrageous. I counted six different members of staff that had come to the table for one reason or another, with no awareness amongst them of what the others were doing. Also staff congregating in the smoking area vaping. Presumably on a break, but should not be there. All in all pretty disappointed, it’s went downhill and at almost £80 for 2 people for restaurant week isn’t great value.

We really enjoyed our meal here, I was happy with everything I chose. My partner enjoyed his curry but wished he chose something else as wasn't quite what he was hoping for. The outside area is beautiful and we were so comfortable sitting there while eating. The servers were great and weren't on top of us much which I like when I eat out. We skipped starters as we were looking forward to ordering more for the meal to share but next time we'll definitely be trying the sharing chaophraya platter. I had the panang curry with chicken which was delicious and the chicken was cooked perfectly, I didn't get a bad bit and had that with jasmine rice which again really enjoyed. My partner went for the jungle curry which he was warmed was extremely hot, luckily it wasn't that hot - he could taste the heat but not uncomfortable or as hot as he prepared himself for but it's quite a thing curry which is where he was disappointed but it's the first time he's tried that one. His preference is a thicker curry more like the panang so he'd choose something different next time but glad he tried it and still ate it all. We also chose the noodles which were described a as a take on Singapore noodles. I was expecting a bit more heat but the taste of them was delicious and I'm so pleased I ordered. But they definitely don't have any heat to them. The chicken was slightly more chewy than that from my curry but not off putting. We also got the side of their five spice chips which again had a lovely taste. Carb overload for us but we ate it all and I walked away very stuffed but very satisfied. I'd be back again but it's a bit pricey so will be a treat for us rather than a regular visit.

Ordered three curries, rice and spicy chips via deliveroo. The meal came without rice and with one of the curries missing. Rang the restaurant to ask if they could send it through, answer was blunt and with no apologyt: "no" and "get a refund from deliveroo" I am allergic to fructans which are onions and my lamb curry was requested with no onions. The crispy shallots were left off but the meal itself had big chunks of onion in. The vegetables in the curry were half a carrot and three pieces of semi-raw potato. The lamb and sauce was quite tasty, but about 1 lamb chops worth of stringy overcooked lamb. The chicken Curry was good for flavour and the texture and taste of chicken too, but was similarly quite short on the amount of actual food in it. Each curry is £23, which is a lot of money for a small amount of average food. The spicy chips were ok-ish but not very spicy. So we made our own spicy chips whilst we waited for our rice to cook (remember there was no rice) Big disappointment in both quality of food and value for money.

My husband booked Chaophraya for my birthday dinner yesterday. In the past we have always celebrated our wedding anniversary, promotions and birthdays here. Have come with friends for bottomless brunch many times. However yesterdays meal was different. We ordered the sharing platter. Which was OK - not bursting with flavour like it normally does . Whilst my husband enjoyed his meal . My order of GOONG PRIK KLUEA - was just battered prawns on a bed of fried rice noodles. It was so oily I could not even eat a single bite. My husband who generally eats everything could not even eat a bite. We asked for it to be packed to take it home. I then ordered COCONUT CRÈME BRÛLÉE for dessert. This came with two raspberries on top. Whilst having this I realised that both raspberries had gray mould! I spoke to a lady ( sorry, can't remember your name). She was lovely and offered me a replacement dessert. At this point I just wanted to go home. We asked for the bill - she had taken my main and the dessert off the bill and offered us 10% off for next time. My birthday meal was a disaster and it will be a good while before I come back here again. I left the packed food as there was no point taking it home! Very disappointed.

One star is for very bad service. Such a bad experience we had this time (tonight). We received the mains and immediately realised we need some more food. We asked the waiter can he add chicken satay- he said that will take only 5 mins. We finished dinner in 25 mins even then the chicken satay didnt arrive. We asked for 2 extra spoons which never arrived. We waived to the waiter and he said it is nowhere close ready so he is taking that off the bill. Then we had to ask for 2 times to bring the bill, which included the chicken satay. We asked him again to correct it - he doesnt return in 15 mins. We walked to the counter as we had to leave, he prepaped the bill and included service charge. He had already included that in the bill and asked if it is ok. I could not believe he was asking for service charge after so many mistakes. We didnt want to create a scene. So paid all of it and left. Know that there were people in total 3 tables and rest of the restaurant was empty. There is no way a service can go wrong in so many ways. Utterly disappointed.

I came here for dinner on my birthday. This was my first time here and I really liked it. Chaopraya is a great choice for a date or special dinner. The service was super quick! (it was a Monday though) For drinks there was a 2 for 1 cocktail special, so we both had tigers eye which was delicious. There was an abundance of drinks choices and food. It was very difficult to choose what to eat but in the end I decided to go for 3 starters because I had my eye on the mango sticky rice for dessert. I got spring rolls, sweet corn cakes, and summer rolls (all vegetarian). All dishes came garnished with sweet chili sauce, violas, sprouts and/or banana leaves. This is something I really enjoy and am very particular about. It was very neat and the best part was it did not take away from the dish. A lot of garnishes interfere with the flavour or texture making it hard to distinguish the quality of the taste. The sweet corn cakes were definitely my favourite, and the spring rolls landed an easy second. The sweet corn cakes had an excellent balance of moist and crisp. The different flavours were really strong meaning you could accompany it with sweet chili sauce without sacrificing the food itself. You can never go wrong with spring rolls, there wasn’t anything particularly special about these ones but they were very tasty. The summer rolls were well wrapped, fresh and super crunchy. They were very tasty and I loved them even though I do prefer a summer roll with peanut sauce and vermicelli noodles. The starter portions were bigger than I expected (definitely not a bad thing) so I ended up taking the remaining summer rolls home and not ordering a dessert. Although the meat and fish dishes dominated the menu, the innovation of the vegetarian meals made up for it entirely. My boyfriend had the beef penang, which he said was great and quite spicy (but in a good way) however, the beef was less tender than he thought it would be. I tried some of the sauce and it was very good. He also ordered the chicken tacos as a starter which came after the main because the kitchen accidentally made vegetable tacos (again, this did not bother us at all). My boyfriend was also not able to finish his meal completely so did not order a dessert either. There are some incredible flavours on the menu. Incorporating fruit with savory is a definite favourite of mine however, if this is not something you enjoy there are plenty of staple Thai dishes. The menu states how spicy dishes are using chili icons which is helpful for new customers to decipher what they can handle as every restaurant is different. The interiors were not the best which was a little disappointing considering the quality of the food and how they promote themselves. Initially I was put off by it being located in Eldon Sq. however, a singular entrance by lift helped to make it feel more special. The building itself is beautiful and a rooftop restaurant is always nice. I did feel like there wasn’t much ambience however, it was a Monday. From its appearance it did not seem like a Thai restaurant. I understand it is a chain which takes away from authenticity but it still would have been nice to see some traditional furniture or at least a few tributes to Thai culture that weren’t limited to Buddhas. As a slightly more ‘sophisticated’ establishment, I did expect better however, it was still comfortable. The prices were relatively decent however, as university students this isn’t a restaurant we’d be able to go to often. I think the prices are completely reasonable considering the taste and presentation of the dishes. For the two of us we paid £72 including service charge. * The negative comments are just explaining why I have given 4 stars instead of 5. I would still highly recommend this place to everyone reading.

To the extent of one person’s main meal being entirely forgotten and finally served while others were waiting. My main meal was lukewarm. Ended up with espresso served in a stone cold cup. Food was very tasty regardless of the shortcomings described above. A bit of effort towards carpet cleaning would help as you can see stains offering long history of food spillages. And tune the music down please, not to mention the questionable selection of the music itself. Nice location though. This is subjective review but that’s what it is about I guess.

This restaurant has a great feel and ambience but the mains let it down. We ordered the black pepper sauce chicken and another spicy chicken dish, the biggest let down was that the chicken was so dry that we both ate less than half of the dish. £90 total cost..1 drink each, the chaophraya starter platter, 2 mains and 1 side of 5 spice chips. Told our waitress when we'd finished that the chicken was so dry, hence the reason there was so much food left over, we blatantly saw her tell the manager and guess what.........! When the bill came there was no form of apology or good will gesture....too which I was very shocked considering how politely we mentioned about the food. Anyway we paid and left. We tried it and the experience confirmed we would never go there again or recommend this restaurant to anyone ever.

Was so lovely. They went above and beyond decorating the table for our anniversary and giving us a glass of prosecco each. It was a nice surprise. The food was delicious and the service top notch. There was a large vegetarian selection to choose from. The atmosphere is electric. Was a Tuesday evening but still busy. Must be a very popular place. Definitely recommend to eat here especially for celebrating occasions as we also saw other people celebrating special occasions such as birthdays with birthday balloons.

We found the food was good quality, the waiter was really attentive but the drinks are REALLY expensive. We will return but it will have to be a special occasion.

Nice enough restaurant with nice enough food and friendly service, but close to £100 for two people for a not spectacular meal on the chilly terrace was disappointing.

Brilliant valentines banquet sharing menu, me and my girlfriend particularly enjoyed the salt and pepper prawns. As well as the spring rolls to start. Fantastic to get to try different things and share, all large portions. Service was fairly efficient for a busy evening, only let down by the price at almost £150 and a fairly perplexing £15 service charge

This is the end for this chain and me. I found it wasn’t great in Glasgow and once again failed me. This used to be a great Thai chain and now has become poor quality.

Great experience working with Chao, everything was explained brilliantly and staff were super friendly. Would highly recommend the cooking class for anyone who is interested.

Service was acceptable but the food was lukewarm and vastly overpriced for a shared starter platter and two mains at £104! Definitely wouldn't recommend!

My favourite Thai restaurant, the food is just amazing!! All the staff are so so polite and attentive, the views are wonderful, and most importantly the food is really well flavoured. Delicious!

I am giving 4 stars because the food was absolutely unreal however, the service was extremely slow, we had to ask 3 times for some table water, the table was not ready when we arrived and there was zero interaction from the staff until they wanted us to pay. When you pay £100 plus for a meal for two you expect a little interaction or even checking if we were okay, wanted any more drinks etc. The toilets were also not clean, pee all over the seat and no toilet roll in the ladies. I really do love this place but the staff need a nudge to be more attentive, i dont think ill return any time soon, there are so many other restaurants that will provide a better service. The food was outstanding though and i am happy to pay that bit extra for a good meal.

We went for dinner for restaurant week early evening. We didn’t feel like it was great value (£20 a head) for the food received, but having looked at the normal menu (highlights include £4.50 for plain rice), it was a lot less than usual. We did enjoy the food, though my partner found the pad Thai quite cold. The service was very quick- not sure if food had been pre prepared given smaller ‘restaurant week’ menu and was sat out. We were disappointed by the service especially after reading other reviews. We were served by many different people and had to ask twice for water, then when it came it was half a glass each and the jug taken away which I found very strange. We were sat beside the server’s area which was quite noisy, and overheard they ran out of plates which explained why we didn’t have any at first. We had high expectations for Chaophraya and as students it was meant to be a special treat, but sadly we weren’t so sure

Lovely ambience and views of the city centre. Mains were beautiful, however only thing that drops this down is the price of the sides £5 for rice (which was very bland) and £6.50 for a handful of chips is rather extortionate in my opinion. If price wasn’t in the question this would be an easy 5/5

Really good experience and absolutely delicious food. They pulled a switcheroo by giving us a bottle of water rather than tap water as requested, but other than that it was top notch

Went here for lunch with family having heard great things from friends, and we weren't disappointed. Brilliant restaurant, lovely atmosphere and the staff are so nice and helpful. We picked the set menu, and WOW. Brilliant food, so tasty and massive portions. Good value for money given the quality of food. Can't wait to go back!

Really nice service, good location and nice views Food - I would say it’s similar to Thai but hugely altered to meet the British food standards that doesn’t do it any good.. but I think they had to adjust to the market Cocktails are okay though In general I would put low rating but the atmosphere and nice and friendly staff made up for some greasy and not truly authentic dishes Also not too loud which is rare in this country

Average food, very pricey. Mains don't include rice, ( 5 pounds extra). Starter 3 dumplings for 10 pounds. Not good value for money. The service was good.

We visited Chaophraya for an anniversary. The service was amazing and fast. The staff were friendly and advised on dietary requirements. We ordered the Chaophraya starter selection which was delicious. The chicken tacos and tempura prawns were especially good. The pad ka prao with pork had the perfect level of spice and a lovely rich savory taste. Unfortunately I did not enjoy the pad Thai, I felt it lacked flavor and fell too sweet for me. Despite that I highly recommend this restaurant.

Really great looking restaurant and lovely staff but really disappointing food. The ribs and dumplings were good starters, but the udon seafood and chicken/dragonfruit stiry fry dishes looked more like cheap buffet food than authentic Thai dining; full of big chunks of raw onion and a weird gloopy sauce on both. For the price you pay, you're getting a nice venue, not good food. Decent cocktail menu though.

The food was good but with a price comparison against other Thai restaurants I have dined at, the quality was not as worthy of the price. Their price is relatively standard, so I am not saying it is expensive 😊 The service was excellent. The staff were very accommodating, attentive and polite, they also made sure we were aware of the discounts, cheaper options and the menu options. The atmosphere is probably the best selling point. Stunning, quiet and low lit Thai restaurant. The restaurant is on the top floor of Eldon square which is accessible by lift, so you have some beautiful window views of the city which is perfect on the evening. There are plenty of vegetarian/vegan options. I would recommend going Chaophraya and I will likely come here again.

Great place for a quick laid back lunch. It's no frills but I like that. Had the 3 meat rice bowl. Very authentic Chinese food. Light and pretty healthy, just meat rice and veg. If you don't like meat on the bone you can make a request for no bones.

Really kind servers, amazing tasty food, we couldn't finish the food because the portions were huge but it made it very reasonably priced for what you were getting.
