What brilliant service, we had top class service from Zara, it was very busy but all the quests were looked after equally, the atmosphere was superb, well Zara for getting us in unexpectedly we are definitely coming back for your service and the pie.

What a disappointment for Xmas Eve with family ! The staff were commendable & made us feel really welcome. However the meal was lacking . For a start it was overpriced although we acknowledged that we would be paying a premium price. The salmon main meal was a sliver of a portion, the child's meal was larger in quantity! The beetroot gnocchi was unrecognisable as to its slushy consistency. Chips resembled fried potatoes. The mayonnaise on the smoked salmon sandwich smelled 'off' & unedable, so didn't eat the bread. We did have a partial refund on the bill as we complained about the gnocchi. Thank-you for that, you did not deserve the amount that we were robbed. Never again.

The worst dinner I have had in my life, beef was tuf as old boots,3 hard and tough roast potatoes, veg came in a tray with, 1 piece of collyflower each, 1 piece of broccoli each, carrots like bricks, and 8 peas, 4 each. And a small bowl of gravy between us, NEVER again.

Food very disappointing, service adequate. Will not go there again. We popped in at lunchtime for a bite and were seated in a darkish crypt like room lit by too many ceiling pendant lights. Not a great ambiance. I ordered a toasted bagel with scrambled duck egg and pancetta, my partner smoked mackerel mille feuille. The bagel was tasteless and dry, the scrambled egg totally over cooked and dry, I could only eat half a bagel. The smoked mackerel mille feuille was unsubtle and tasted very smoky, very small portion. In some ways the side watercress and rocket salad was the best dish, though they replaced the watercress with lambs lettuce and the balsamic vinegar dressing was basic. We were not in a mood to complain or send our dish back. Nobody asked us at any point how we enjoyed our food, not impressed!

I have just had Sunday lunch at The Bear and sadly, it is probably one of the worst I've had (I often go to different pubs, etc for Sunday lunch). It was cold - cold Yorkshire pudding, cold/pink beef, hard diced vegetables (no traditional ones) and transparent/thin gravy. The only upside was I could take my dog.

Went to the cube for a family lunch yesterday. Lovely setting but our lunch out was ruined as a bug crawled out of a half eaten prawn sandwich. We opened the other half to find the lettuce crawling with greenfly. Lunch ruined. We won't be going back to the cube.

My first visit to The Bear yesterday, had lunch with some friends in the glass cube at the back. The surroundings were quite pleasant and I was looking forward to lunch. I ordered the Hake in Batter as did another diner on our table. When the food arrived, the first thing that struck me was the size of the portion...it was overwhelming the plate and to be honest, quite off-putting. And that's before I tasted it! The Batter was crisp, but oh my goodness far too much of it and the fish, when I found it inside it's gargantuan casement (!) was not pleasant at all. The hard potatoes that accompanied the meal were vastly overcooked and not nice at all and everything had a nasty 'tang' to it - like old oil. The waitress was alerted to this when she cleared the plates - and she was apologetic, but not a word from the Restaurant Manager. I won't be returning to this establishment next time I visit Cowbridge as there are far superior restaurants in the High Street which provide quality food and value for money. Yesterday's experience was all a bit reminiscent of a Berni Inn or Little Chef - quantity over quality!

Came here for lunch with friends in their glass "cube" court yard. Two of us ordered the fish and chips. It was as if both had been overly fried in very old oil. The fish was all batter and very little fish while the "chips" were potatoes cut in half and fried and re-fried and re-fried again resulting in them turning into little rocks. The waitress apologised and said they didn't usually serve chips like that. The meals were tasteless and extremely bland except for a horrible oily tang which was revolting. The service was pleasant but very, very slow and despite leaving most of two meals, they did not offer to have it reflected in the bill (not that we asked but we did let them know it was really very poor, in a nice way). Definitely won't be coming back, especially when the Hare and Hounds is just down the road and the quality just doesn't compare!

Booked for 7 of us last Sunday 23/2/20. As so many have stated just not enough veg and limited choice. Only roast potatoes were on offer along with cubed swede, sliced carrot and broccoli and as mentioned above it was in short supply. We all left feeling hungry. The service was also very slow that day waiting ages for our drinks to be brought and almost 40 mins to get our meal. It’s a lovely venue with a pricey Sunday lunch tag for very little of it.

Absolutely awful meal so very disappointing as it was a birthday celebration. Took forever to get even bottled water. Had to ask three times for the wine and water. Beef tough and tasteless, pork loin fatty with tiny pot of jar apple sauce between two of us. Only had two portions of vegetables between six of us which were over cooked and soggy. Had to ask for more vegetables as portion size awful. Two in our party had dessert. Don’t bother.. like the beef the bread and butter pudding tasteless and tough. So very disappointing we won’t be back!

When we arrived we were shown straight to our table. Drinks ordered and arrived quickly. Meal order taken starters arrived without delay and were nicely presented and tasty. After that things started to go haywire. Mains arrived without too much of a delay, but parts of the orders were missing and took a while to arrive. The sole on the specials was a good size and tasty. The pork belly had a not very nice flavour with a cloying sauce chips were the best part. Tomato sauce was requested three times and eventually we were told that they had run out! and would have to be got from down the road it arrived just as the main courses were being finished. Our concerns were passed up and apologies made. Because I had left most of my pork they did not charge for it. Desserts were ok my sundae was lavish although there was some confusion about the spoons the waiter suddenly remembered that he had sundae spoons. Our second order of drinks took a very long time and only arrived after being chased. The restaurant card machine was broken and we had to wait for a long time in the bar to pay- the final let down We have been here several times and have always been pleased with the experience. I don’t know what was going wrong the staff were friendly and although the restaurant was not busy they were rushing around but not getting anywhere. We probably will be back.

With a group of people dining there is inevitably going to be someone with allergies or dietary intolerance so being considerate diners we telephoned in advance to alert the kitchen of one guests requirements. We were assured there would not be a problem. In fact: “Our chefs at The Bear are passionate about local produce – grown from Welsh soil and reared on Welsh grass, so expect menus that are fresh, rustic and to die for.” Not true! One person was unable to find anything to eat local or not. Even the gluten free frozen chips turned out to be coated in wheat. Of course the answer came to us - How about a plain jacket potato? No, we were told there were no potatoes on the premises at all - imagine our surprise / shock! I offered to go to the nearby greengrocers to buy a potato but this was declined and the staff shrugged at our surprise that at 1pm mid week there were no potatoes or anyway of purchasing one in the centre of a market town. The rest of us ate our lacklustre lunches apologetically and swore never to return. What’s happened to the Bear’s reputation for good food and customer service? We were not asked if our food was ok and nobody apologised for the paucity of service. We will not be returning.

Twice now in 6 weeks we we went for Sunday lunch around 6pm. Again a hotel with no food, or no staff or both. We were offered a limited selection of sandwiches being told that was all they had to offer when customers who came in after us had hot food served. Whilst I always used to speak highly of the Bear for service and food I can no longer recommend the Bear. Friends of ours who had ordered earlier had to go and look for a member of staff to find out were their food was. Will not be returning.

I was looking forward to the dinner but was disappointed with both the service and the quality of food. We waited for over 30 minutes from sitting down til a drinks order was taken and then a further ten to receive our drinks. Not even water until this point. The three course meal was very ordinary. My terrine starter was a small slab of pate, not a terrine as far as I was concerned. My salmon main was ok but came with two tiny roast potatoes- that tasted of nothing and then a shared dish of carrots and sprouts. Choc torte was nice but the whole experience was mediocre :(

We arranged to have sparkly at the table as people arrived and the staff were very efficient in ensuring our guests had a glass in their hands within moments of their arrival. We had pre-ordered the food choices as we were a party of 13 and everything was served together and everyone commented on how nice the food (and wine) was. Recently visited for a midweek evening anniversary meal, and may come back every year now! Having been to The Bear on many previous occasions we has never previously been to Cellars (using the bar, lounge or beer garden instead). Everything about the place was amazing. The setting, in an old cellar (hence the name) is quite unique and the décor positively adds to this. The staff were great, very welcoming and able to offer recommendations that on reflection were recommended correctly. Lastly, the food, amazing! We both had the brie starter which was perfectly oozing in the middle, mains of beetroot kofta was delicious (and I usually insist on ordering meat) before finishing off with the Belgian waffle despite strongly considering Cowbridge Mess (thank you for the recommendation, I wasn't disappointed with the choice). O can't remember what my wife had as I was enjoying my food too much, but she enjoyed too. Would definitely go back and quite happily order the same!

We arrived for lunch on Dec 26th, a busy day, got a table immediately, and ordered two simple meals. The fish and chips was good, hot and freshly cooked. The baked potato with tuna was inedible. The potato had been previously cooked and the skin was charcoal. It had been insufficiently microwaved so the inside was tepid. My guest found it inedible and, though hungry and not a fussy eater, was put off eating lunch and wanted to leave, understandably.

Had been previously about 12 months ago and am pleased to say it is still up to standard. The Brie starters looked a little over done but proved the nicest we have had because the breadcrumb coating was actually quite crisp not stodgy. Very tasty. My husband had the gammon (as usual) and hardly uttered a word all the way through which means it was good. My salmon was beautifully cooked and presented. All round excellent and the staff were efficient but not overbearing. Very pleasant cellar type restaurant but might get noisy if very full.

I visited the Bear Hotel for lunch on 2nd December 2016 with my wife and four of our friends. We met in the bar located opposite the main lounge. That room is split into two areas which are served from a single double bar in the centre. The main issue with this arrangement is that both sections are served by just one staff member from behind the bar who struggles to serve both sides of the room. I had experienced this problem on previous occasions at the Bear and have complained about it at the reception. Clearly the management are not interested in resolving such issues. I do not mind waiting a reasonable time to be served, but I draw the line at ten minutes to be served during which time my food was becoming cold. This arrangement makes it impossible for the lone barman to keep a track on who is next in line to be served.Eventually, even our thinly spread barman stopped serving so we had to cross over to the main lounge for more drinks! Yet again, that bar was manned by a single person who fond it even more difficult to cope. This poor service is definitely not what I expect from an establishment that is not known for its competitive prices.I ordered the fish and chips for my meal and, although it tasted well, the quantity for just under £11.00 was not adequate. The fish was small and accompanied by a half dozen or so chips. The amount of peas on the plate was rather limited to say the least.Regarding other aspects of this hotel, they are well provided.A - A private car park is provided behind the hotel that needs a code from the receptionist to exit.B - The hotel is well located on the main road within the town centre.I can not comment on the quality of the rooms.

I took my Mum to lunch here on Thursday 1st December during a day of Christmas shopping in Cowbridge. I picked this place as a friend is getting married here next year so figured it must be good. It’s very lovely to look at when we went in it felt warm and cosy, the meal was extensive with good choice. I had high hopes. It struck me as a little odd that it was so quiet but figured we’d at least get served promptly. My Mum ordered the brie to start and I ordered the mushrooms – my Mum’s starter was delicious and luckily a bit portion as we had to share because mine was horrible. It was a bowl of undercooked onions with the odd mushroom that tasted so strongly of wine that hadn’t been cooked off. It was unpleasant to eat. My Mum had steak for her main which she said was delicious and she had the blue cheese sauce which was pure nectar (I literally could have eaten it with a spoon, like a soup, so good!) I had the fish at chips which was spot on!For pudding my Mum has crème brulee which was overcooked so a frozen solid lump but tasted OK, i had the eton mess which was delicious and generously portioned (even with skipping the ice cream because it was minus 3 outside!).Despite the food being nice, I won’t be returning... to me, staff make a venue and here they were unwelcoming, unenthusiastic, obtrusive & looked miserable! Even when pointing out that we’d waited an hour for our main despite there only being two other tables having food, I just got grunted at – no apology or explanation.

I don't usually take the time to write reviews. However, I felt I needed to this time.I am very disappointed at the level of service and the quality of food served on our recent visit to the Cellars restaurant at the Bear Hotel (Friday 2nd December). We were celebrating our anniversaries, myself and my husband who got married at the hotel 12 years ago and my Mum and her partner who celebrate their anniversary on the same date.ServiceOur table was booked for 12.30. On our arrival there was no one available to show us to our table so we had to go to the reception, where a gentleman just pointed to where we needed to go (back the way we came), we saw a waitress who when asked "please can you tell us where we are sitting?" Just looked at us blankly, we then saw the other members of our group who were already seated, so joined them. We opted for the two course menu at £14.95 each, which is very reasonable. Two of the group had starter and main whilst the other two had main and pudding. We ordered drinks and placed our food order at approximately 1 pm. The starters arrived and were cleared away we then waited nearly an hour for our main course to arrive, at which point we were all extremely hungry. The meal was finished and again we were left waiting for our desserts. We were offered coffee 'as it was also included'. However, this was now nearing 2.45 pm and we had to rush off to pick my son up from school. The only explanation for the delay in the service was that "there is a function on with over a hundred people in the next room"FoodStarters - both Pate, very nicely presented, no complaint.Mains - One Cumberland sausage, nicely presented, no complaintThree roast turkey dinners, all of which looked as if they had been put out the day before, reheated and then left standing for some time on a hot plate. The gravy had a skin on it and had dried into the meat, the roast potatoes had the same reheated appearance. When this was suggested to the waitress she was quite adamant this was not the case and "that is what happens when you put food onto a very hot plate". There was not a lot of taste to this meal. The veg served with the meals was definitely 'al dente' (cooked so as to still be firm when bitten) crunchy is a better description, I know this is personal preference. Desserts - both fruit crumble with custard, nicely presented and tasty too. However, in comparison to the starter the portion size was very small. The restaurant was not busy, from recollection there were only four tables occupied with approximately 20 people seated at them including our table. When going for lunch I really don't expect to have to wait this long for food to be served! There is no excuse for this level of service, the establishment is aware when they have functions on and should staff them accordingly. Due to this experience sadly we won't be visiting again and won't be recommending the restaurant as we have done in the past.

Found this place on a Sunday evening when not many other places were open. We were drawn in by the menu shown outside but once inside, we found it was a special 'Roast' menu for Sunday. All fine for the adults in the group but my teenage daughter had so wanted something off the menu, so was disappointed. I asked if they could possibly cook the different meal for her - they checked with the chef who was more than happy to accommodate us - really happy daughter :-)Four different roast dinners were also ordered - Pork, Lamb, Chicken & Beef - I can honestly say it was one of the tastiest roast dinners I have ever had in a restaurant. All the trimmings for all dinners and plenty of veg and potatoes & a Yorkshire pudding for all of us. We stayed for desserts - well presented and extremely yummy. The hotel restaurant goes back further from the front and has a lot of unseen tables so don't be put off if you think it is full at first look - good atmosphere as the restaurant filled up - plenty of staff waiting tables.

Friends have recommended the Bear Sunday lunch to us for a long time, but we just haven't got there. However we managed to get a table last Sunday . What a treat, the food was amazing! Even though I have quite a small appetite I managed to finish everything. The extra gravy seemed quite unnecessary at the start of the meal, but my word, what a treat. The staff are always amazing and somehow.... I think we will be repeating our experience. Wonderful and no washing up !

We sat in the spacious beer garden. The Bear cheese burger was to die for and one of the best I have had. Chips were great and served with slaw and a good side salad. Service and staff excellent. We would definitely return.

This restaurant is full of old charm and character with its stone walls and beamed ceilings. There are small, secluded areas for quiet, intimate dining and other more public areas for larger groups. We called in for lunch and found the menu to be wide and varied with options for light bites, main courses and daily specials. Food was well presented and tasty. The service was efficient and polite. In particular, I recommend the vegetarian Glamorgan sausages or the mackerel and bacon bits salad if you're looking for something lighter. We will no doubt consider dining here again next time ever we pop to Cowbridge.

We've eaten here several times and the food has always been good quality and presented well. The surroundings are lovely too. They are family friendly, which is a bonus and the staff have always been very attentive towards us - even when the kids are making a mess! Food standards are worse every time. Used to be a great place to eat, especially bar meals, in a great location, a coaching inn with loads of character I've known for over 50 years. Three times in succession the meals were poor, so we (and others) now tend to eat elsewhere when in the town. Pity.

Booked here for Sunday lunch when visiting Llandow for a driving experience. Found it online and thought the pictures of the food looked fantastic. We were not disappointed! Went for the 3 course for 16.95 and each course was delicious. When looking at other restaurants menus, they are more expensive. You don't lose any quality or quantity here even with the great price. Went for a drink first of all in the bar which was nice. Highly recommended.

Most hotels provide buffet breakfast these days however with the small number of rooms and therefore less people at the Bear the quality of the food was brilliant. The service was swift with plenty if juice, tea and coffee available.

My family all agree this place provides the Best Sunday lunch in the area. We called in on the off chance after picking up the family Christmas tree, restaurant full but found table in the Lounge . 3 roast beef and one lamb ( all severed with amazing Yorkshire puddings ) duly arrived plenty of meat ,bowls of steaming veg and jug of gravy just the ticket . Good selection of real ales my partner enjoyed Christmas ale and I had warm mulled cider . Just enough space for lovely desserts we enjoyed 2 apple crumbles and custard 1 sticky toffee pudding and a desert called Christmas mess which was amazing . Service great and good value . Only complaint they had sold out of mince pies . Will return

We treated our Mum and guest to the lunch for a Christmas present and how disappointing it was ... the meal was very poor and considering how long the hotel has been running you would think they could understand what good food is all about but apparently NOT ... Their main agenda is cash from the bar. Max Boyce appeared for a measly 45 minutes out of 4 hours a very very poor standard, if anyone reading this should think again if they think The Bear is somewhat 'posh' it is not, it is all fur coat without the knickers. I had the unfortunate experience of going to a party there and again the food was absolutely disgusting ... SHAME ON THEM all about the money not the nice time and good food ... Obviously they do not care about their customers

What a nice surprise today, as a party of four we decided to go to the Bear hotel in Cowbridge for Sunday Lunch, Why surprised? I had not been to the Bear before, and expected prices to be high, and the food to be average, I was wrong on both points, the prices were perfectly reasonable in fact quite cheap at £16.50 for three courses, all three courses were extremely tasty, and the main course was adequate to satisfy the hungriest of diner, the Cellars restaurant is extremely comfortable and has a great ambiance, the staff were all attentive, knowledgeable and well turned out in smart uniforms. To summarize, this is the perfect venue for a reasonably priced high quality Sunday lunch, and I will be going again soon.

Set, as the name implies, in a cellar, the atmosphere is serene and welcoming. The added details of fresh flowers on the tables shows just how much this establishment aims to please the customer. Low background music adds to the ambience. Down to the food, well presented, tasty and piping hot, The service is second to none. For two course lunch with two drinks each £36.95 - so not overpriced either !!

This was my first visit to Cellars Restaurant. I nearly cancelled the booking after reading comments on TripAdvisor re: poor service, in particular, those concerning long waiting times between courses. However, I am glad I did not cancel as I could not fault the service or the food. On our arrival (i.e. party of four, Saturday evening), we handed the waitress our order, having downloaded the menu the day before. Pre-dinner drinks were served almost immediately and the dinners not long after. Our sirloin/ rib-eye steaks were cooked to perfection as was the vegetarian option, Glamorgan sausage. Desserts were also excellent (i.e. 'Cowbridge Mess/ pecan pie/ cheesecake). We are already planning our next visit to Cellars Restaurant!

NO wheelchair access to restaurant, no removable ramps to be used. They offered my wife, who is a wheelchair user, a coffee table to eat a Sunday dinner from and when that was pointed out as unsatisfactory they then came up with a plan to try and sit a party of 5 on a 4 seat table in the farthest reaches of the bar. No consideration or compassion from the staff. My wife is very upset and disappointed still from the visit, I explained she also has other disabilities other than just the physical ones but no concern was shown or given.

If you look at my previous reviews I have raved about this restaurant and have always been happy with the service and food. On this occasion, a Sunday lunch for 7, I (nor my fellow dinners) could say the same. In fact our whole table gave the experience a lowly 4/10 and I feel that was being polite.Service was tardy at best, our pre dinner drinks taking 30 minutes to arrive and it wasn't overly busy. .......and it went downhill from there and without boring you with the detail, each course took a similar amount of time to be cleared and for further refreshments to be served. The staff didn't seem particularly interested and just wanted to go through the motions. Food was OK, but not as good as it has been. Sadly, it's time for a dining break from this location. Will not return soon. Pick it up guys!

The service and surroundings of the bear hotel couldn't be faulted, the staff were polite and friendly, and there was a nice 'buzz' for our evening meal. I had the Lamb which was delicious, and my partner had the Burger. However, both were slightly overcooked, which stopped the meal from being great. Service was also a little slow, probably because there were two large parties in the restaurant, but staff kept us up to date on the wait. Overall: fantastic, but if you prefer your lamb pink then ask!

There were four of us dining and I must admit I think we were not the easiest table to be served, asking questions etc. However we could not fault the excellent service from Andrew and Natalie who dealt with our queries and served our food. The food, well this was good, a varied menu with something for everyone, the food was served very hot and tasted wonderful. The starters of shredded duck, and mains of rib eye steak, and the cod and chips must get a mention. Once we manage to negotiate the double door of the entrance with the pram (one of them was locked), the entrance hall was spacious enough with room to pass through to the dining area. We were given a large table, and a highchair was brought to us. Unfortunately the buckle did not fasten correctly, allowing my daughter to attempt to stand. We enjoyed a light lunch of sandwiches and a wrap. The food was prompt, well presented and tasted good! Went to this restaurant last night with a large group of friends (a party of 15) and was thoroughly impressed with the service, atmosphere and extremely high standard of food at a very reasonable price. I opted for the rib-eye steak (with cheese and bacon lardons topping it) which came in at £17 and looking back that seems like a real bargain. The steak was cooked to perfection and was accompanied by some extremely nice sweet potato fries. The meal was particularly impressive given the size of our group, all food came out warm at the same time and not one person had a complaint (in fact i believe the majority of the party were in agreement that it was a truly superb feast). There was plenty of choice on the menu and i am already looking forward to returning hopefully in the not too distant future to sample more of this restaurants delights!

Called in for lunch as i have eaten here before, as expected it was very busy but managed to get a table quite quickly. I ordered the drinks and food and the barman very helpful and attentive. My wife ordered the filo pastry which was very tasty and mourish although they forgot the rest of her meal which arrived too late to be part of the meal, her coke came with lemon but had the sticker still on the lemon, the waiter did not ask if we wanted vinegar or sauces and my burger was just a burger, i expected more for the money. They do the main things well but have forgotten the basics which in my opinion is not forgiveable. Unfortunately The Bear Hotel is living on their past reputation and they need to begin from the start and get the basics right.

I recently had dinner here with my partner. The Bear hotel itself is a very nice hotel and the bar area where we sat was very nice and cosy. Unfortunately, the food let it down. I ordered the vegetarian burger which wasn't very nice. My partner ordered steak and chips but it came with sweet potatoe fries and we specifically asked for chips. When my partner explained to the lady serving us she didn't apologise for getting the order wrong and her attitude was such that it was to much effort and we were being a nuisance. She did reluctantly take his plate away and bring the chips we asked for but her whole attitude was not what we would expect for this hotel. Needless to say we will be trying alternative restaurants to eat in Cowbridge in the future.
