We have been using Castle Fisheries almost weekly for over two years,and also when friends and family visit and we all agree they serve the best fish and chips ever.The fish is top grade and the chips more like you do yourself.The place is spotlessly clean. The couple who own it are lovely,always smiling warm and friendly,and it is a pleasure to go in there.They work so hard and deserve the accolade.

We’d parked outside the shop as there was limited parking space and didn’t know we couldn’t, there is one sign on the wall but it’s between the house and the chippy so we’d assumed it was for the house, the man who owns the shop came out and put a written sign up in my window saying “you can’t park in my driveway”, I’d opened the door to apologise and explain but before I could get a word in he started shouting at me and being very rude and unprofessional, I tried to explain several times but he wouldn’t let me get a word in, he did finally let me explain but stood looking smug like he didn’t care, afterwards he still had no compassion or professionalism about him and continued to have a go at me, I closed the car door on him and as the bin men pulled up he continued to complain about me as if we wasn’t there. I understand he didn’t appreciate us parking there but the matter could have been solved a whole lot nicer, I really did not appreciate the way he came out and spoke to me, it was rude, disrespectful and unprofessional and the man has absolutely no compassion whatsoever!!!

On a Friday evening, we had decided it had to be a fish supper. Originally we had planned to go to another more established fish and chip shop in Portchester to dine in but after reading some of the more recent reviews, we decided to give them a miss. We went to Castle instead and we were not disappointed. We were aware that it had changed management recently and we had read a recent review about it but it exceeded our expectations. When we arrived it was very busy and customers were waiting patiently for their orders to be prepared. The staff were very polite and quickly took our order. We had to wait a little bit longer than expected because there was a large order for a cub scout group in front of us. But for us and the other customers, we didn't mind as the food was well worth the wait. We ordered a selection of food which included battered cod, haddock, fish cake, sausages, mushy peas, as well as the daily special of chilli squid. The food was cooked perfectly and the batter was light and crispy and not thick, soggy and oily. The chips were wonderful and just as good as Portchester's Ruby takeaway in the late 90's. We bought fish and chips here before the change of management and now after. We will definitely be returning here for another fish supper. I highly recommend Castle.

Still a good place to eat, new owners have kept the same style of cooking and with the same great taste. Only down fall I have noticed is the decrease in items on the menu. Nice polite people and friendly.

We used this chippy for years, but sadly since the change of ownership it has really gone down hill. Firstly was kept waiting almost 40 mins after my order placed, then when being served half the order had been forgotten, so another further wait. The medium portion of fish, was very small, but when questioned, was told by the owner, its a thick piece,!!. The sausage's were under cooked, chips and chicken breast just luke warm. Curry sauce was very watery. We ended up throwing most of the meals away. Waste of money. Sorry We won't be back.

I don’t know why I’m disappointed every time I go into a chip shop and see that there is nothing that I can order and walk away with. I appreciate that the owner doesn’t want any waste and that the customer wants their food fresh, but at 17:50 I’m a Saturday night I’d have though the risk of having a few things ready would be negligible. Now that little rant is finished, the food was good, the portion good and the price good.

Years of wonderful fish and chips has just been destroyed by the change of ownership. Fish was tasteless. Under battered and poorly cooked. We live less than 5 minutes away and the chips were only Luke warm. Such a shame after the years of really good food. We will not be going back.

We visit here at least three times in a month, it is close to home so food is hot and it is very clean, always a lovely welcome and friendly chat. A real family place - love it.

We have tried this a few times, as it is vey close to home for us, but have been slightly disappointed every time. The food is edible, but the batter on the fish has always been quite greasy and soggy. The chips are ok, but again taste like they have been sat around for a while. It has never felt freshly cooked, and occasionally we have had to leave some, as it was too greasy. On the plus side, It is quite a bit cheaper than the other fish and chip shops near by, and we have always found the staff very helpful and friendly, hence why we try again every now and then in case the food has improved.

Great selection of fish, nice to see cockles on the menu. Very large portion of chips, a medium between two would have probably done it.

We moved down here in 1998 and have been using this chip shop ever since. We did try the new one that opened up in the old bakery in white hart lane but that was vile and we have stuck with the castle takeaway. Large portions for your money. However you do get the odd day of bad chips but that's very rare. Put when someone orders a pinapple fritter the chips are lovely. Yummy yummy

Realmente este es un pez pequeño y tradicional de craqueo chips. Ha estado allí desde el 50 y mi familia y yo hemos estado usando durante décadas. Pescado cocinados a la orden, lo que se traduce en una corta espera, pero sabe mucho mejor de esta manera. Normalmente teléfono con mi pedido y luego no hay espera. A jewel in the crown of fish&chips; always cooked fresh and to perfection not at all greasy they also do OAP portions at a great price once eaten twice smitten

El mejor fish and chips que he tenido! Yo vivo justo arriba de la carretera, así que intente comer aquí al menos una vez al mes. Buena comida, tienes que esperar a que la cocinada, pero vale la pena la espera. He visitado frecuentemente en los últimos meses y siempre tenía comida sabrosa, realmente bueno. El servicio es siempre bueno.

Very generous portions, everything cooked to order ((which means a short wait) and plenty of choice. You can even choose a bag or traditional wrapping ... Only slight criticism is that the fish can sometimes be a bit overwhelmed by the batter. But still the best chippy in Portchester by a mile ..

Taste was the tops, with generous helpings of chips and the tastiest fish for miles. If you want a good reasonably priced meal, here's the plaice.

This is one of the best chip shops ever, it is run by a local lad, Dean and he takes great pride in his cooking and he only cooks to order, due to this you may have to wait, but it's worth waiting for. There is a different deal each day and he caters for OAP and children. I have lived here for nearly 34 years and the family and I have always used this chip shop and in all that time there has only been 3 owners that I'm aware of

Not too bad prices a little high as there's plenty of competition in Portchester for this type of take out. Had fish here once was a large piece but when got it home was mostly batter with a thin slice of hard over cooked fish in the middle, not very impressive. Other things are better and he does do different daily deals.The waiting time can be long and tedious there's no seating to talk about and it looks like he looks after his regulars before and stranger in the camp gets served.This having been said the shops been there since 1950s so something must be going right.

You might have to wait a little bit longer but it's worth it for the fresh taste of yummy fish and proper chips.

I went here today and when I got home and opened up the bag I was not amused. my pie was still half frozen!! The fish was so small and the chips were soggy and green. After his I don't think I will visit here again or well any time soon.

We've tried all the chip shops in Portchester and this is, in my opinion, the best. The portion sizes are great and the chips are consistently lovely.

I went here today portion of chips were tiny and also soggy and the curry sauce was so waterery that when I poured in on my chips it seeped completely threw not bad prices if you were getting an appropriate portion first visit don't think I'll visit again

Best bit of advice when using the castle takeaway is to call in your order before leaving the house. Why? because everything is cooked to order. This means that you get perfect crispy batter, fresh, and hot items, and they don't do you short of chips either.

Taking advantage of a promotion in the local newspaper, my wife and I purchased a medium fish and chips from Castle Takeaway in White Hart Lane Portchester. The portions were huge, the fish overlapping the plate, and the amount of chips served, was the biggest portion I had ever been served anywhere, and this was 'MEDIUM' Goodness knows what a 'large' would amount to. The fish was perfectly cooked, in a succulent batter, and the chips were also delicious. The cost for this massive meal was only £4.80, which must be the cheapest for the size of the meal, for many a mile. My wife and I would highly recommend this establishment to anyone in the vicinity of Portchester, Fareham, Paulsgrove or Cosham, who are seeking a quality but inexpensive fish and chip meal.
