Carpenters Arms in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

Spot on service by very pleasant and helpful staff. The menu was preselected before we arrive so dinner arrived promptly. Three children ate everything which is unusual! Four adults thoroughly enjoyed their meals which were reasonably priced. Highly recommend!

I’m not sure where to start….. I wanted to write a review because I feel this place deserves to have some recognition. In a nutshell….. Food…affordable prices, great portions, well presented and tastes as good as it looks. Drinks….affordable prices with a great selection. Staff….Absolutely Amazing to be honest. Me, my sister and my 2 young daughters had one of the best times visiting on a Sunday afternoon. They play live music Sunday afternoons and the band even let my 6 year old get up and sing. From start to finish the place was A+. I’d recommend to anyone.

Amazing food and great atmosphere here in this friendly traditional local pub set in the heart of beautiful Metherell. The owner - Midge - was wonderfull talking to us about the local area and what it's like to live and work in Metherell - even giving us a small guided tour! We would definitly reccomend visiting here - especially as they host so much live music in the evenings!

Amazing, lovely food in a beautiful old country pub setting. Home cooked, plentiful portions. Chunky chips and lasagne were the best ive had in a long time.

A wonderful country pub set in the heart of this lovely village. Having played here with our band the previous weekend and been warmly welcomed by everyone, we returned to sample the delights of their menu. And what a treat! We had the tiger prawns with crusty bread, chicken goujons with a lime, ginger and soy salad, and the seafood selection & chips basket meal. All 3 meals and 2 drinks came to a total of about £27 - tremendous value for what were very generous platefuls, and all of first class quality. I would highly recommend eating, drinking and enjoying a live music event here. Thankyou Midge and your fantastic team - we will definitely be back.

My partner and I dined here tonight after we booked a table in advance. I am so happy we came across this pub on Trip Advisor as it is off the beaten track but what a hidden gem it truly is. As soon as we stepped in the door we received a warm welcome with a menu already placed on the table for us. We both had steak and each one was cooked to perfection, the cheesy garlic bread was amazing also and pudding was just as good and there was a nice selection of cakes on the counter too. The landlady was lovely and checked in with us regularly and the chef / cook even came out to make sure all was okay with our meals which we couldn’t fault. This is a locals pub but tourists like us were made very welcome too.

Visited for a late lunch one January afternoon when struggling to find anywhere open for food at that time of year! It’s right in the middle of the village and clearly an old pub. Warmly welcomed. We went in to the conservatory side of the pub which whilst nice I felt the traditional bar would be cosier and it was!! Clearly a locals pub with some enjoying a drink at the bar but making us feel at home too. Menu is standard fare and we chose steak and chilli main dishes. Both came out as generous portions - the steak was well cooked with a nice blue cheese sauce. The chips and onion rings were also good. Chilli was a good size portion too. I’d asked for a mix of the nacho or rice option which was accommodated. I had asked if any guacamole or salsa was possible but there wasn’t. I thought there might be as they also have fajitas on the menu “with all the trimmings”. Not to worry. It was a nice enough chilli. The food was hot and filling and drinks were nice too. It’s a nice old pub and we enjoyed a game of darts after we’d eaten - something we haven’t done for years!!! I wouldn’t rave about the food. It was nice enough and well cooked. Home cooking style I’d say. Would eat here again if passing but I wouldnt go out of my way for the food. We had an enjoyable visit though.

We loved our visit to Carpenters Arms! It’s a gorgeous traditional English pub set in a Cornish village. We had a Sunday Roast which was delicious. Pudding was good too as were the drinks and atmosphere! The service was fantastic and the prices very reasonable. Would highly recommend it and will definitely return if we come back to this area again.

Exquisite presentation for jacket potatoes. Quite delightful . I had prawns which was accompanied with a lovely salad. You will not be disappointed

Just visited today having been desparate to find a decent pub for lunch. What a little gem this place is! We arrived at 230, wondering if we might have missed the lunchtime deadline. Not at all. A really decent lunch at a very reasonable cost. Very nice staff who were very helpful. Highly recommend this place and would definitely visit again if we are in the area.

Lovely pub, lovely location, lovely staff. Just a shame about the meal. An overpriced meal. We had fishcake and Duck and Egg Goyza's which were both served with a side salad. Both very average and poor for the price.For the main dish I had the pie of the day (steak and ale) The pie itself tasted ok but was of a miserable size and i think is bought in, which considering the price is poor and lazy. I had mash as the side. This was such a pathetic size ( would have consisted of 5 chips possibly if served in that way) that we had to order chips to fill out the meal as I did not want to be hungry. As you should not after having pie, veg and mash.The vegetables were tasty and a good portion size, probably the best bit which tells all. (brussel sprouts, broccoli and carrots) But very disappointing for the price.My partner had the Chicken Murgh Marhani from the specials board, Though she enjoyed it, the chicken distinctively looked like it was pre packed chicken bought in with fake char burns on the side of it akin to what you get when you buy a cheap ready meal lunch containing chicken. Tasted ok, but again,,, was it really £10.95 worth!?!? I do not think so.I have since found out that the chef was away for new years eve, so I do not know whom cooked the meals when we went, but they certainly need to learn about portion sizes. A trip down memory. My auntie and uncle lived next door to this pub when I was very young. There cottage is still called The Haven.The Carpenters Arms lived up to my childhood memories.The hospitality was excellent as was the lunch. Three of us had the fish and chips and the fourth member of the group went for the chicken.Best fish we've had in a long time. Chips were excellent. After searching the town of Callington for the carpenters arms a local pointed us in the right direction and we were very glad they did . The staff were welcoming to us and our little dog , the roast beef and lamb were superb . If you want proper home made , tasty food this is the place to come

Visited this pub on the recommendation of our accommodation hosts. Both of us ordered the Wednesday evening offer of fish and chips and a drink of wine and were well pleased. Never before have I eaten a piece of very light batter with wall to wall fish. Not at all greasy and chunky chips that were crispy on the outside with fluffy potato centre. A very good price of £10 each. The best fish and chips I have had to date.

The fish and chunky chips were excellent and there was a reasonable pub menu choice of other meals. Very well kept beer and the take away chips were good as well. Take the very narrow second on the left in Lower Metherell if you approach from Metherell in the north. Enter the left door to the bar if you want to chat with the locals or enter the right door to the restaurant. A well kept secret but worth the effort to find.

Visited this ancient pub in the Thursday steak night. It was wonderful, the four of us all asked for our steaks to be cooked differently and they were amazing. Locally sourced and so tender. Amazing potion sizes which we couldn't eat. Friendly staff and evening entertainment

We regularly eat at The Carpenters because the food is consistently fantastic . Especially the steak which is cooked to perfection ! The waiting staff and bar staff are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble . Totally recommend you enjoy a dinner lunch or drink there .

I would not describe the Carpeters Arms as a "gastro pub" because I don't think that is what they think they are either. However, their food is way above "pub grub" and really rather special. The pub got us out of a real scrape. We had planned a celebration dinner at another popular pub not far away who let us down really badly at very short notice (The Who'd Have Thought It Inn - please take note) by cancelling a graduation celebration dinner for 10 people on the day.

Myself and my family (4 adults 1 baby) visited the carpenters arms yesterday for lunch. Staff were incredibly attentive, beers were very good and food was excellent. The tomato soup was great and it was nice to have a burger on a proper bun that doesn't fall apart when you eat it. We were all well fed, looked after and happy when we left. Been to The Carpenters Arms on many occasions including Birthday parties, always received a warm and happy welcome. The staff are always polite, courteous, diligent and go out of their way to help. Food is always excellent whether it’s Pizza, steak, fish and chips, roast or something from the specials board. Curry’s are delicious and all food homemade. Great selection of ales and gin.

We arrived at the Carpenters Arms after a long 6 hour journey to our holiday cottage just yards away from the pub. Our arrival was 5 minutes before the pub's website states that they stop serving food and we were told they would not accept our order despite our explanation that we had literally just arrived. The young lady at the bar simply told us we should have booked ahead!

We were staying locally and were looking for some food after a long day touring.. this pub is a hidden gem, we both had Sirloin steaks, cooked to perfection.. excellent onion rings chips and the best blue cheese sauce I’ve ever had.. well worth a visit.

This was our first time visiting this charming little pub. Our friends drove us there. Quite glad they did as we could have never found it on our own. Both bar and restaurant staff couldn't have been more helpful and lovely. We turned up without a reservation and was explained there was going to be a bit of a wait as they had several bookings and in future may be best to book. We happily waited and tried a few of their gins. A magnificent strawberry gin I hadn't seen before. Our food was superb. Piping hot and very tasty. The pie of the week was a winner as well as the steaks. So glad we waited as it was worth it. We'll be back... Hopefully the gps can find it again.

Cosy pub in a tiny cornish village. We had a fantastic time every time we visited this place. We were recommended to book as it gets busy. So we did. Staff are very welcoming and friendly. The food was superb, not just your regular pub grub. Had scallops and sirloin steak. Superb scallops and that was by far the best steak I have ever had. Cooked to perfection. Others in our group had fish and chips, lamb shank and the vegan curry. Portions were plentiful and absolutely delicious. I would definitely recommend this place and also do book a table before hand as proven to us, it does get busy.

Had a lovely lunch here on a very rainy day. We’ve just moved to the area so we’re trying out all the local pubs. Tough job but someone has to do it!! Will definitely be back. The manageress is just lovely and can tell you all about the history of the pub. Found out from her hubby that we can walk to the pub from where we are in Calstock so will be doing that next time - when it stops raining!!

We discovered the Carpenters Arms when following a walk on the IWalk Cornwall app (which is really good) around the Cotehele estate. It was perfectively placed 1/2 way around. It is a very friendly traditional pub that's dog friendly. Lunch was great and washed down with real ale. Couldn't have been better.

the stagg here are really helpful and welcoming , the food is nice pub food, at reasonable prices, draught beer choice a bit limited if you dont want lager, dogs are welcome on the nights we visited lots of dogs inside and outside the pub, our only complaint is its a little scruffy particularly outside with broken bench parts and boxes and bags of rubbish in the seating areas, also outside planters look unloved

Visited on a Friday early evening, were put off by the unwelcome feelings we received. Sorry as this doesn’t seem to tally with the rest of the reviews, we must have been unlucky but felt it was not dog friendly or non-local friendly so left and ate elsewhere.

We stopped by this pub for an impromptu lunch while on a walk from Cothele House. The welcome was friendly and the beer excellent. We had a simple lunch of toasted sandwich and cheesy chips. The chips were particularly good and smothered in melted cheese.

Sometimes you walk into an empty pub which is devoid of atmosphere and charm. Sometimes you walk into an empty pub which still retains the above traits - and that's how I felt about this pub. We sat outside drinking an ale watching the world go idly by which can seem few and far between these days and even the ridiculously big hornet couldn't spoil the mood. It's obvious that this pub tries really hard to bring in the punters with multiple events (quizzes, music, BBQs) which is really refreshing to see. I wish this pub was my local.

Me and my partner came in for steak night... it was amazing!!!! The waitress Kate was extremely sweet and attentive and Emma on the bar was great! I would definitely recommend! The steak is one of the best I’ve had!

A lovely characterful and friendly pub!

I have eaten here several times before and every time the service and meal have been excellent, I had some special requirements this visit and the lovely young lady called Emma made sure that this was taken care of.

This pub was recommended to us by a couple of friends who live locally. We got lost trying to find it but got there in the end. Small car park. Lovely looking pub with a spacious outside sitting area. The restaurant could do with a little refurb. Our friends told us to make sure we booked a table as it may get very busy. Glad we listened. It was busy. We were greeted by a lovely smiley member of staff. Very welcoming and professional. My girlfriend is vegan. She was over the moon as she had the sundried tomato tarte accompanied by chips and vegetables and vegan ice cream afterwards. I had the fillet steak. Rare. I have had steaks in many places but never have I had a steak quite like this one. Ticked all the boxes. Perfectly cooked. We did send our compliments to the chef as both our meals were outstanding, very ample portions and piping hot. I would highly recommend it. The waitress was very attentive even though it was very busy. Will have to try their fish and chips offer next. One suggestion would be to sign post it better. Other than that, we had a wonderful experience. I may buy a drink to my mate for suggesting this great pub.

I visited the carpenters arms recently whilst visiting the area on holiday as a vegan I was not expecting to have a large section of meals available but to my surprise there was a good selection and the risotto was amazing not only in appearance but in value also!!!! A wonderful meal met with a good selection of drinks and the bar staff and waitress couldn't be more helpful the barmaid I believe Emma? Was so kind and nothing was a problem I would highly recommend!!!!

Had the best pizza on Monday night. The menu has a variety of toppings to meet people’s needs. Really friendly staff, and couldn’t be more accommodating.

I went down here for a meal and I ordered steak and chips and the waitress was so helpful on my choice, the waitress was also very helpful on my drinks and she went to get them straight away, overall id rate my experience a 10/10 because the food was absolutely amazing and was exactly how I wanted my steak to be cooked, service with a smile and it was a brilliant size portion as well

We were told to wait, which we happily did so while barmaid was in the other side. After 10 minutes, she asked what we wanted & was quite perplexed that we asked for a menu to order food at 7.30pm. We were sharply told it was pizza night & nothing else. I explained I was gluten intolerant... barmaid shrugged her shoulders & we walked out. The pub weside states it can do vegan, gluten free etc, but we were offered nothing. Save your time & go to a decent eatery with friendly staff who are happy to serve you & can accommodate your food requirements!

We spent a week in Cornwall near to this great pub and used the place every night during our stay. Food was perfect , most nights have a special, steak night, fish and chip night and pizza night to name a few. Also Al a Carte menu is available if the special isn't what you want..

Me and my other half recently came for dinner here at the carpenters. There was an amazing selection of gins and the bar maid Chloe was very helpful with giving us advice to which fever tree tonic complimented the gin I had chosen. The food was incredible, definitely worth the visit and we will be back very soon.

Discovering a pub at the top of the lane from our holiday cottage was a delight, after the first visit we knew we had found a hidden treasure! The staff and locals were so friendly, the atmosphere was great and the food was outstanding. We found ourselves going back every night, special menu deals, entertainment and the friendliest bar staff you could hope to meet. If you’re in the area try it you won’t be disappointed.

Down here again after a while and decided to go for their Fisn and Chips with pint deal. You can get Fisn and Chips anywhere but theirs was out of this world. No stodgy chips, nice and chrispy. The Fish batter however must have been kissed by angels. Honestly. It was so light and chrispy and didn't take away the lovely texture and flavour of the fisn. Must certainly be one of the best of not the best I've had. Oh yes and the real ale was excellent to accompany the meal.

Took my son for lunch on Mothers day. Our table was booked for 12.30. When we arrived there were 2 people at another table. That is all. We ordered our lunch and it was over half an hour before we were served. We were not told of any wait. We ordered desserts and that was another half an hour to wait. It was not busy so no excuse. The food was delicious but not perticularly hot either.

Decided to go back to the place where we spent our wedding night, just for a quiet meal and to reminisce. Had a nice meal and the staff could not have been friendlier. Food was sensibly priced and well cooked. Couldn’t fault it. Will certainly be going back when we can.

We had a lovely family evening meal here whilst staying in the area on holiday. The staff and locals are very friendly and make you feel very welcome and our drinks were brought to the table for us rather than having to wait at the bar. When ordering we were told that there would be a little wait for the food as they only had one chef working that night. It wasn’t a problem for us and when the food arrived it was well worth the wait. Good quality food, cooked to perfection and very good value for money. I wish we had a pub like this one at home. If you are looking for somewhere to eat in or around Callington then this is the place to go.

This was an excellent little find on the way to our late check in accommodation. Lunch menu for a group of 8, excellent value for money and the waitress was really friendly. Steak baguettes were generously portioned and the cheese ploughman’s was delicious.

It was obvious that Sibi researched thoroughly for our enjoyment, and taste. The atmosphere was relaxed and pleasurable. And, not forgetting the canapés that was delicious. I recommend for anyone to attend an hosted by Sibi and Rob.

Another wonderful event attended at Carpenters Arms last night for their first Gin tasting evening. Hosting by Sib and friend outstanding and Robs canopies fantastic as usual. Great to see people had travelled for surrounding area for the evening. Great atmosphere and so friendly.
