The food is the best. But watch the efficiency of the service! Young guys all working together to give the quickest and most cordial delivery. (How they teach them should be a college course!). Apart from eating, I could just go and watch the service excellence!

Haven't been for a while as it's a bit of a drive for me, but enjoyed it immensely, as I always do. Everything is freshly cooked to order, no matter the time of day, and I had the large chips and spam fritters. I had trouble finishing it all, the portions are that large. Brilliant, brilliant, briliant.

Great menu choice, good gluten free choice. Food always freshly cooked. Good portions.

After 12 staff members from this company came into my place of work, and seemingly not to be happy with an answer of a question they asked. Calling me “that thing” and a “fat b****” and something about shoving stuff down my mouth… I probably wouldn’t recommend this place, to be fair. Apparently it was justified due to my “bad attitude”… but not sure that calling a young woman names is justified when I was just doing my job. As someone who suffers with an eating disorder due to people making comments on my appearance in past, it has really affected me and given me anxiety of what people must think when I potentially walk into food chains.

Had the cod fillets and chips with home made tartar sauce. Freshly prepared delicious the tartar sauce was fantastic. The shop looks great and the poppy display in the window very poignant. Service was friendly and the whole experience memorable. Highly recommend them

Been using captain cod’s for years now and even though I don’t live in hoddesdon now I always still go in when I’m the area, the finest fish and chips anywhere without doubt.

Been using the captains fish & chips at Hoddesdon for a while now and ain't been disappointed at all, quality continues to be first class. Amazing traditional fish and chips, whether it's cod, haddock, rock eel or skate, fish as been fresh and cooked to perfection, chips are as they should be crisp outside and soft in the middle. Homemade curry sauce and tartare sauses are spot on. Staff are friendly, humorous and welcoming and even sent out a sausage for my dog while we were waiting for or order to be freshly cooked, we'll worth the wait. Hi highly recommend, don't miss out give it a try, you won't be disappointed. They offer daily deals to sort all budgets.

This fish and chip shop used to be one of the best in Britain. Lately, however, the quality of the food has markedly deteriorated. The last time we visited, the chips were limp and the fish was sodden with oil.

There is a reason its won awards....very reasonably priced as well

got pie and chips chips were ends of potatoes n recooked n hard even the vinegar never even soaked in defo old chips if u want a good chippie go seaways in cadmore now that's fresh

Cooked fresh as you order so it's worth the wait. Never had a bad meal. Travel from Sawbridgeworth every week to have fish and chips.

Broke my tooth on a stone that was in the chips somewhere. Food tasted great but when I raised this issue with the guy he basically just shrugged. Didn't apologise, offer a refund or anything. Not ideal when youre spending £40 on two small fish and chips and a drink... not ideal at any restuarant really tbh.

Been going to this fish and chip shop for several years without any real problem. It's always been a pleasure until today. One of the things that makes the place special is that fish is normally cooked fresh to order and although this means a small wait its what sets it apart with the fish perfectly soft and the batter lovely and light but crispy. However today's experience was the complete opposite. The fish was boxed and ready to go within about one minute and, boy, could I tell the difference. The fish was barely warm and the batter was heavy and hard in places. Clearly everything had been cooked in advance and that took away from the whole experience. This is not meant as a complaint, as such, more feedback so that I hope the same thing doesn't happen next time.

Went to captains for fish and chips, sausage in batter, mushy peas, curry sauce, homemade tartare sauce, and I must congratulate the whole team for the lovely experience It was super delicious, the staff is really pleasant, quick and efficient , the food cooked to perfection, What more can I say !

Best fish and chips I've ever had hard working staff very efficient

This has to be the best place in the area for fish and chips for flavour and quality food. The servings aren't overly generous and it's not the cheapest but if you want to pay for proper decent fish and chips then you won't beat these guys.

Poor customer service i received was dam right rude. Been numerous times before and food has been okay against the price,but tonight was sub standard.will just have to find another .

I have bought Fish & Chips from here on many occasions and find the Food Excellent and the Staff pleasant and helpful but it is NOT "CHEAP EATS" Parking outside is a matter of luck - but if one parked further away, the meal would be cold by the time one arrived home with it.

Went there as i was in Hoddesdon on Saturday ..Fantastic Chips... Best I've had in ages . Would totally recommend...been back several times since & the curry sauce is to die for !!!!

Took the haddock and chips back to our hotel room. Really well cooked and tasty. Batter was crispy. Chips were substantial -one large portion was more than ample for two.

We have had multiple take outs from here. It’s always great quality and at a reasonable price. They say they came second place in the national awards but for me they are number 1.

Best fish and chips around that's for sure. Fish is fresh, batter is crispy. Chips aren't under or over cooked, but are soft with the right amount of crisp on the edges - perfect.

Ordered and paid for fish and chips from Captains via Food Hub (which comes up when you Google captains) When I arrived, after queuing, I was told that they didn't accept orders on a Friday and refused to look at the order. Very rude. Be careful of using foodhub.

First time visit to this chip shop and came from South Lonfon to try it. Very friendly owner and the food was outstanding. If only I had a chippielome this where I live. The locals are very lucky. I noticed as well that they did a lunchtime special which was great value. Highly recommend. The only question I had when leaving was how did it only come 2nd in the whole of the U.K! Thanks chaps. I always have the same - Spam fritters, chips and a coke. Freshly cooked to order, the taste is sublime. Despite living 40 miles away from this takeaway, it is worth a drive out. Customer service is top notch - shows every other place in the world what fantastic customer service is.

Always good value and quick friendly service. If the boss isn't in, you might need to be a bit more specific with what you want and how you want it, but if he's around, expect great service. The food is always very tasty and consistent. Will you stop running out of bread rolls though?!

First rate fish and chips with a fast efficient and friendly service

Tried before and it was nice. Ordered Skate Wing today and the whole thing tasted of ammonia (it reminded me of Handy Andy when I was a kid). Ate a bit and wanted to hurl so had to throw the whole skate out. researched it and it clearly means the fish is old and rotten...... not cool!! I now feel like death...

Food is good but not the best I’ve tasted, lovely chips but I’ve had better fish at Wormley fish place. Also had better mushy peas & tartare sauce. I think it’s quite expensive for their portion sizes.

We order from Captains all the time, it's def the best fish and chips place around. I love their chicken burger as well as the fish and chips.

Got cod and chips and a curry sauce. Food is bang on here, the fish batter was crispy and the cod was juicy. The chips cooked well and not super greasy. The staff are great set of lads, friendly. I only spoken to one but I'm going to paint the rest of them with that positive brush. Also they are very conscious of the current restrictions, asking you to wait outside while the order is prepared, keeping all parties safe.

Been here twice now after googling award winning fish and chip shops. We first visited in June 2020 and again today 10 December 2020 (we are 66 miles away) The quality of the food is well worth this journey around the M25 trust me. Not all the best fish & chips are at the seaside. Food quality service quality cleanliness and attention to detail make Captains outstanding. We look forward to to our next visit.

Great place to get fish a chips

Superb Fish and Chips one of the best I have tasted. Service is excellent been during Covid well organised. Choice and variety is wide and varied from calamari bites to Deep fried mars bars well worth a try.

Great prices and great food great place

I went there today, normally the standard is good. I did not order the Lunch Time Special, ( even though it shouldn't have made any difference to the Quality, only portion size ). I had two lots of Fish and Chips. Both Fish were Good. The Chips were not and looked liked they were from the previous day. Nearly half of the Chips had a variety of markings; black marks in, evidence of potato skin on the outside and dried up or over fried/chippy. I have included two stars because of the two Fish. Not a Happy Customer on this occasion!

Love the fish and chips here, (his brothers place as well) . Really polite staff. owner always seem a little stressed - relax you are doing a great job :) lady on the door is friendly. Family and I love the food, amazing fish upper we had last week, kids love it as well.
