Captain Cook Inn in Scarborough

Just had the most gorgeous Sunday roast. I had Lamb and husband had Beef. Both equally good. Everything was perfectly cooked. Just wish we lived nearer so we could go more often. We'll worth walking up the hill. Can't recommend it enough. Very good and friendly staff.

Staithes is a beautiful little coastal spot with an unspoilt feel about it and we found The Captain Cook Inn placed at the top of the town a great place to stay and enjoy the area. The walk into Staithes itself is down a very steep hill with the walk back more than a bit testing for some. However we found a present welcome on arrival at the Captain Cook where we were given the pass code for our room and the after hours rear door. Our room itself was really big with nothing short of outstanding views of the area and coast. The room was clean and well stocked the tea coffee and biscuits. After a great nights sleep we moved on the breakfast, I enjoyed a full English which was tremendous with great tasting quality bacon sausages and eggs. My partner who is a non meat eater and hardly ever eats much in the morning ordered poached eggs tomatoes hash browns beans and mushrooms and finished the lot! Stay here with our recommendation and enjoy a beautiful little piece of the English coast.

My wife and I and our friends have just had a 2 night stay here and could not fault it. We were checked in by a friendly young woman and had everything explained to us in a simple way. The inn is a bit dated but that wasn't a problem, we had a large TV complimentary Tea/coffee shampoo etc. Our friends had 2 little problems in their room but were sorted immediately. The food was excellent on both nights and also the Breakfast was first class. I have to give a special mention to Olivia who took our orders, waited on, and served at the Bar who was very busy but was always efficient, friendly and kept smiling. Adequate free parking and located in an ideal spot for touring north Yorks. Anyone that can walk can venture down to the picturesque Harbour and then have a well deserved pint in the Bar on your return. We would stay again.

Stood waiting for someone to ask for a table to be told i'm not sure if there are any tables it gets very busy around 3pm, another girl came through who then said exactly the same thing, not one person went to check if there were any actual free tables just they weren't sure, not good enough really, we wont even attempt again with that sort of service

Breakfast ok but kipper overcooked. Friendly staff. Bed fairly comfortable but small. Nice view from window. In need of updating and decorating. Not very clean. Good location and parking.

We came here as a party of 10 for an evening meal. Food ordered was a selection of children's meals, mussels and parmo and every dish was delicious! A decent sized serving of what was ordered, and the chips were amongst the best we've had. Would highly recommend this pub for good quality pub grub.

Stopped with family and one small dog. Staff friendly and helpful. Evening meals lovely. Rooms were dusty, dated and overpriced. We were given a small double on the second floor. Carpets marked and worn, furniture cheap and chipped. Bedding clean and bed comfortable however inch of dust on everything and mould around shower head and shower pan. Serious need of some money spent to upgrade. No service to change towels or replenishment of toilet rolls so had to ask. The family room on the top floor wasn’t any better. Breakfast was samey not much choice unless you love a good hearty cooked breakfast. Cereals a yoghurt and strawberries provided. To sum it up great position to visit staithes within walking distance however the stay was a bit of a let down. Could be better with up dated clean rooms.

Everyone freindly but not very good food tasteless and not cheap give it a swerve .wife and daughter had fishnchips me and soninlaw cheese burger 2 kids fishnchips all tasteless.

Just spent 3 nights at the Captain Cook Inn. It was great value for money with the best cooked breakfast I have ever had. We had two evening meals which were first class and they have an extensive menu choice. The room was clean and spacious with a fabulous view. We will definitely return there.

Love this place and will definitely be back. Sitting at the entrance to Staithes old town and fab for a couple of nights break. The rooms are clean and comfortable and breakfast was included. Fab breakfast. We also ate in one night and the meal was fab and good value for money. Quaint old pub used by the locals so the bar has a friendly feel.

Was staying locally and liked the menu here on a Sunday evening. Comprehensive menu, didn’t have a starter. Ordered the steak pie with new potatoes and fish and chips. Very generous portions - was pleased we didn’t order starter - no room for dessert either! Several diners were having the Sunday roast - again very generous with portion size. Reasonably priced menu and would definitely visit again if in area.

Good sized portions for a reasonable price. We were a group of 6 adults so booked in advance on bank holiday Monday (advisable). Food selection is good and catered for all of our needs.

Lovely hotel, friendly staff and great food, nothing was too much trouble, enjoyed everything. We had a lovely time celebrating our Ruby Wedding Anniversary, a big thankyou to everyone at The Captain Cook.

Booked Sunday Lunch here for the four of us,was told straight away it was busy and their would be a bit of a wait. No probs, after a 45min wait our food arrived. Sunday roast of Lamb was lovely & generous portions But,our Gripe. A table positioned next to the toilet entrance with a bar table opposite,as you can imagine it was like Piccadilly Circus at rush hour. No where enough room at all. No complaints about food or staff at all, but this area is not ideal for Eating..

We had our food in the dining room, very pleasant and relaxing. I had the fish pie, very tasty, lots of fish and a great topping. Gammon was very good and the Cheese Burger, not so the Lasagna, too much cheese on the top and not much pasta and meat, when we complained they advised that others had said this also. They did take the amount for the dish off the bill. The Chocolate Fudge Cake was lovely, plenty of sauce and great Ice-cream. We have eaten here before and not had any problem with the food. The Sunday Lunch is excellent and the Scampi We would eat here again. The staff are all great nothing is too much trouble, they are always pleasant and smiling.

Amazing home made Gluten free Steak and Ale Pie. Amanda has created a delicious pie, full of delicious steak, with tasty proper homemade gravy. There are other gluten free options available from the menu. 10/10 Phone ahead to make sure the pies are available.

Just perfect. Good food, friendly service and drinks served well. We booked last minute for Sunday lunch but they squeezed us in.

Great food and good size portions I had the lasagne with chips it was home made and really tasty.My other half had a cheese burger served with chips and salad really nice.The beer was good and reasonably priced would certainly recommend booking as it gets very busy

Friendly service but sadly the food was very poor not sure if it was the chefs night off! Whitebait was very undercooked not crispy at all and tasted as though the oil was not fresh. Salmon over cooked as were the prawns

We came last year when looking for somewhere to eat on a very cold wet day and loved the food, we’ve returned again this week and the food and service were once again brilliant. Would highly recommend it here and looking forward to returning again soon.

Lovely place to stay! We had a few days stay in the summer and would definitely return. Room was clean and comfortable, food was delicious. We managed to get a parking space onsite, but it was busy. The free WiFi is very poor though, I can only assume that’s due to the people who come to the pub and are logging on. I hardly managed to make a connection in all the time we were there. Staff are lovely and friendly and the bonus of being able to take our dog was brilliant for us, as we came for the lovely coastal walks and somewhere nice to lay our weary heads..which is exactly what we got!

Fabulous home cooked food. We both had the battered mushrooms and the steak pie and we couldn't fault them. The pie was amazing, absolutely packed with braising steak, the pastry was golden, the chips were proper chips and not frozen and the gravy was out of this world. I'm only sorry I couldn't finish it. The portion sizes are huge! The staff were lovely and friendly.

Visited twice in the last couple of months as we are weekly stay visitors each month nearby. Found the lady behind the bar on Sunday 26th November helpful and friendly lighting the bar fire and advising on the food and accommodation. Three meals at lunchtime completed timely, well presented and well cooked specially my very large fish and chips cooked gluton free which was the best I’ve had in a long time.Muscles very nice but miss the tomatoe chilli muscles as a previous option Great location rather than tracking down into the village below. Easy parking and nice to see the locals visiting,real cliff top pub great views and nice atmosphere and dog friendly. Will be back.

Great location. Nice hotel with basic facilities. Stayed one night with my sister. The rooms are very basic but functional. The location makes up for it. And the breakfast was lovely. You are paying for the location, not the room. Because the rooms are above a pub, we were woken up by drunken guests shouting in the hallway around midnight. Apart from that it was ok.

The food was good. however the staff were frankly terrible. they were rude and the service was slow. 1 of the girls that served us were awful, her language was terrible and quite disgusting She was so rude an d acted like she did not want to be there!!!!! I am utterly appalled by this behaviour and will not be eating here again. Such a shame that such a nice establishment is now ruined due to this shocking service!!!!!

The place trades on the reputation of Cpt Cook. The food was unappealing and it tasted awful. We regretted visiting the place but our o my other option was to dine at the Hall where we stayed and we felt is was a good idea to try the Inn. We left feeling disappointed and not worth the effort to get there. Never again. Over rated.

Great overnight whilst walking Cleveland Way. Good size room, staff all very friendly and helpful. Pub has several different areas to chose from and plenty of outside value. Good range of food including parmos! Lots of choice and good selection at breakfast. And all extremely good value for this popular village in peak season

We stayed here for a night whilst travelling and decided to have dinner rather than venturing out into Staithes itself. A good choice as the menu was good with plenty of fresh home made dishes on offer. The food we had was delicious and it was served with a smile which is always a positive. We couldn't fault anything and the chef took the time to appear and ask everyone if everything was OK too!

Fabulous room with plenty of space to sit and enjoy the sea view.. plenty of choice in room to hang clothes or use drawers, full length mirror and dressing table mirror, lovely clean white bedding with extra large white towels, large on suite with shower, tea & coffee in room with bottled water. Did note they even allow dogs. Breakfast was delicious everything you could ask for and want. Donna made us feel so special and went above and beyond for us, very nice and polite as we’re all the staff. We didn’t eat in the bar however wish we had as the meals looked delicious. We were disappointed with the Cod & Lobster xx great stay would definitely come back and recommend

We had our evening meal here on our first night in STAITHES. Got a nice table with space for our dog to lounge a little bit. Bit of a wait from ordering our food to actually getting served so much Louise had to ask if they had forgotten. Anyway once the food arrived it was super and very very nice, starters and mains. So no worries nice place.

Nice 2 night stay at this hotel. Staff were friendly. Room and bathroom were quite large but nice and warm. No lift so have to walk up the stairs. Breakfast was excellent as was evening meal, lots of choice on menu. Would recommend and would stay again.

We took a bit of a risk going as there were no menus online and reviews were mixed, but the food was excellent. Extensive, varied menu, huge portions and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal. Staff were friendly and service was good.

This is an excellent, but often overlooked pub, which means it is less crowded than those down the hill; it is just back from the carpark at the top. If you want excellent food at a reasonable price then give it a go. A varied menu and lots of vegetarian choices. We were very impressed with their anti-covid measures. They were all spot on. Friendly, helpful staff and dog friendly. Couldn’t ask for better.

Sat outside in the sunshine - very friendly staff, Covid measures being observed, a large varied menu of basic pub grub; good portion sizes that certainly hit the spot and reasonably priced. There were few places to eat around the Harbour - so the Captain Cook Inn was a welcoming sight after cycling back up the hill from the Harbour.

nipped in here at weekend as had issues getting into the pubs at the bottom of the hill. Perfectly welcoming and accommodating . Good bit of banter with young lad serving us. He even let us borrow the phone for a taxi into Whitby - Cheers

Just had a Sunday roast at The Captain Cook. A lovely dog friendly inn in Staithes. The meal was absolutely delicious. The meat was so tender and the vegetables were al dente. Just how we like them. Big fluffy Yorkshire and rich gravy.Could have eaten a whole plate of their roast potatoes. The vegetarian option was a nutroast, also delicious. Price was very reasonable and staff very friendly. All in all 10/10.

This Inn is at the top of the road that leads down to the waterfront as an excellent place to go to if you don't want that climb back up after eating. Called in for a drink at lunch time and there was plenty of outside seating and another day had an evening meal in a very cosy part of the Inn. The food was good with a good choice and the staff were very pleasant. An enjoyable evening

It’s an old fashioned place, but not a “traditional” pub. It’s clean and they follow COVID-19 regulations. Standard pub food at reasonable prices.

Stopped off here before our two day break in Staithes. Came at midday and the staff fitted us in without an issue as we had not booked. A lamb and chicken sunday dinner was ordered with two pints of peroni. The staff were all lovely and friendly. Table service only and the track and Trace system and Covid systems worked well. We wouild happily eat here again.

We ate and drank here a couple of times following the COVID measures. The service was really good and we all enjoyed the food too. The only downside is that the choice of beers has reduced recently. I don’t know if that’s a side effect of the pandemic. In any case, it’s well worth a visit.
