Racist and rude Absolutely not worth it

Parked in customer parking, board clearly mentioned that. Was half way out of my car and the owner (?) lady came out yelling, claiming that I couldn’t park my car there. There were several other cars parked there. Told me that she could call the “police” on us and everyone else parked there if she wanted (I hadn’t even said a word to her yet) and that I should park elsewhere. When I mentioned that I wanted to order food and ask what time the shop was closing down, I was told to shut up. Two other white families came and parked a minute after this altercation, she said nothing to them. I’m a POC. So is she? Problematic. Internalised racism, I guess. Her breath stank too when she was all up in my face. Like, really bad. Would not recommend, unless you can somehow make it inside without her crazy self demanding you leave there.

Used to be good, not cheap at all for a chip shop. Food has gone right downhill, didn't even taste like cod and been left with a bad stomach today. Cod was half the size and half the quality for more price; absolutely dreadful

Food is good. The place is pretty tired and it shows. However, the staff are kind and the prices are affordable.. so definitely hits the spot when looking for a local chippy.

We are regulars here and can’t recommend both the food quality and staff friendliness enough. This is one of the consistently best chippies we have been to.

Extremely welcoming fish bar! They have one of the best fish going! Whenever I get a portion of fish and chips, it’s always fresh and the fish is so light on the inside of the crispy batter. Fish literally melts in your mouth it’s that good! On top of that this fish bar likes to do its own special house curry on top of the normal chip shop curry!

Friday night chippy tea, fish bites were awful. Not cooked properly had to throw away and make do with chip butty . Used to be nice but I would stay clear away

Food left a fatty layer in your mouth after eating it. Every customer hassled to use cash instead of card.

Really enjoyed my food from here. Fresh cooked fish. Just what I needed after a late night at work and couldn't be bothered to cook. I dropped in 20mins before they closed, no fish was ready yet they still cooked my order so close to closing time. I'd recommend this place for food and service 🙂

Well I'm not sure what happenend to this place 10 years ago they were winning awards but when we visited recently after moving away but visiting family in the area I have to say the food was disgusting and thats putting it politely. Maybe they've had a change in ownership over the years but never ever again sorry

Took a long time to get served despite only a few customers in the shop, and when eventually served there was no feeling that they were pleased to have my custom or apology for the wait. When we got our food home, I discovered my cod and chips had no grease proof wrapping. Consequently, I couldn’t lift the paper without it tearing; I had to transfer my food by hand across to my plate with the paper ripping and sticking to the food; my hands were soaked in grease! The cod was horribly greasy and much of it was brown and soggy - not the flaky white that one comes to expect at better eateries - and so I was unable to finish it. As I write this I can hear my stomach growling and their is a growing desire to go to the toilet! My partner had sausage and gravy said that both tasted ‘a bit odd’. Both of us found the chips to be a bit soggy but otherwise they were OK. Overall, a pretty shabby experience. Will not be returning.

Awful fish and chips, been there 2 times and became ill …. Owners moan about using card machine as are always asking for cash. Food is all frozen and not fresh and never good quality. Expensive

Best chip shop around. Great taste & friendly staff. You often wait a while - the queue shows the popularity, and much of the menu is cooked to order.

We have been visiting Captain Cod for many years now and is a family favourite. Freshly cooked beautiful fish with generous portions, what's not to love!

Cuando entré en la tienda, parecía grasiento y olía raro. Quería pescado con patatas fritas y noté que dos miembros del personal hablaban entre sí, demasiado ocupados para notarme. Finalmente llamé la atención, le pedí a la mujer asiática pescado y papas fritas, y solicité uno nuevo; ella me dijo que el que está en el gabinete es fresco, le pregunté si podía comerlo adentro y ella dijo que sí, me senté a comerlo, noté un olor rancio del pescado, se lo llevé a la señora y ella dijo que no había nada mal cuando puse el pescado hacia aquí, notó el olor rancio y dijo que te pondría otro pescado fresco, dije que no, solo devuélveme mi dinero, ella se mostró reacia al principio, ya que estaba más enérgica que finalmente dio me devuelven mi dinero Creo que deberían llamarse capitán bacalao maloliente, así que si quieres comer pescado maloliente sea mi invitado, les di una calificación de 1 estrella, que en mi opinión es demasiado. Cuando salí de la tienda, miré la clasificación de alimentos e higiene y, para mi disgusto, recibí una calificación de 1 estrella de 5.

I went here for dinner the other nice. A really big portion of food. Me and my partner had 2 x Regular Chips 2 x sausages and a curry sauce and it came to £8. Very happy with the food and price. Will be returning.

Took our fish and chips home and the fish was completely rancid. I took it back to get my money back and they tried to keep the money for the peas and condiments that I hadn't returned. Mental. He then proceeded to tell me that it was my fault as I didn't ask for fish cooked to order. Soz mate, my bad!

Went tonight - seemed like they were not ready for the people (customers), as they were asking what everyone wanted and then the cook chap kept going to the back room. Lady at the front was helpful - though seems like she wasn’t getting the assistance she required. It’s cash only - which is well sign posted however, I would’ve thought it’s time they entered and support the cashless society we’re living in. Food - fish had too much batter, mushy (similar to the other review) and overall not impressed. Chips were ok. Like the title said - used to be really good a few years ago... however, not that good now.

This used to be fantastic for food, but just recently even when eating in kebab meat and chips the food is cold, also they never have enough kebab meat and wants to mix chicken pieces in with it and it was only 8pm, what happens if kebab meat is requested later in the evening.

Totally disagree with the bad reviews on here. We have always found the owner lady very friendly and polite I’m sure it was a genuine mistake for the over charge comment below. And regarding the cash only policy she is a registered business so will pay tax, you must have misheard as I’m sure it’s due to the ridiculous charges that are put on you if you operate a card machine. Regarding the food we have always found it to be of excellent quality, good portion size and great value for money. P.S. you can’t beat their large fish it’s like a whale!!

Good fish and chips. For lunch you can have a cod bite and chips. Small portion of fish just right for mid-day. Usual array of pies and kebabs.

I asked Southend fried, recieved a mound of broken pieces of spicey chicken. Didn't look appetising, tasted less.

So, on entering the building it looks like every other chippy in the uk, slightly worn down, caked in grease and with staff that are more harassed than happy. The young lady serving had reason to feel harassed as none of the male staff (not the fry cook and certainly not the inexplicable crowd of shouting arab gentlemen who kept charging around in the background) paid any attention to her. She had to shout, three times. to get the fry cook to put my order in. Aside: I have no idea what they have in the back room but it must be amazing as the cook left his station four times in the six minutes I was there to visit the back. On a positive note my food was fresh and piping hot, the chips were slightly underdone but not in such a way that it was an issue and the batter on my fish was fresh and crispy. Sadly it would appear that my fish had made more than one trip in to the fryer as the actual fish was cooked to hell, a complete mushy mess with no texture or bite, which was very dissapointing. Te price was reasonable (slightly under a fiver for fish and chips) but I doubt I'll be back any time soon as the mushy fish just wasn't up to par.

Possibility the worst chips I've ever eaten cold and undercooked plus gave us grave instead of mushy pea's. Refuse to put chips inside a cob super bizarre.

Wouldn't go to that fish and chip shop ever the rotten food and rotten owners.

Great tasting fish and chips. Venue is always busy, judging by the queues of people whenever you go. Confusing queuing system sometimes. Is CASH ONLY. It needs to get with the times and accept other payment forms like card. Cash machine 5 minute walk away, but too much hassle when other venues take cards. Let the place down. Friendly staff.

Good fish n chips...always order on the door and make sure they wrap the fish seperate as they have a habit of putting all together and it goes soggy on the way home. Other than that it's a good chippy!
