Cannon Hall Garden Centre & Thyme Bistro in Barnsley

I've been visiting Cannon Hall Garden Centre for well over 20 years, I have never been disappointed with the plants I have bought, superb quality.

We've eaten here a fair bit now. The food is always excellent, the scones are superb and you get a proper pot of Yorkshire Tea. The staff are always friendly and it's nice to see the same faces

Garden Centre is good but the restaurant is what we went for, Very nice food with quit a varied menu, prawn sandwich was well filled, too much for aged parents but doggie bags available from very helpful efficient and friendly staff. My lemon & herb baguette was very good We ate inside although there is outside seating. Unfortunately the outside area can suffer from a smelly stagnent pond/river which exit from the restaurant takes you past. This is a shame and means 4 stars rather than 5 from me. Met family for breakfast recently, food was excellent especially my eggs royal special. Although busy we could hold a conversation without shouting thanks to the baffles on the ceiling. Much prefer this restaurant to Rob Royd farm shop as the ambiance is so much better for chatting and the food equally good, if not better. This restaurant is becoming our choice for a family breakfast meet up... good food and a very nice atmosphere Called for breakfast today and food was as good as ever. There has been one problem since we started using this restaurant, the outside are was after smelly due to a stagent river feeding cannon Hall lake. It wasn't a problem inside but affected the very nice outside areas when the weather was good. I noticed today that the river has been cleaned up and there is now a strong flow so the likelihood of smelly stagnet water is eliminated, brilliant and makes outside dining a real option when it's warm.

Fab shop and greT food in the cafe

Really great garden centre - very well stocked with wide selection of plants. Cafe was the highlight for us though. We visited on a busy Wednesday lunchtime but plenty of space so easily got a table. Service was very efficient and the food was delicious. We all had the ‘Veggie Club’ flatbread - highly recommend (very generous with the halloumi)👌

Friendly staff and tasty, quality food. We were a table of 10 and they had no problems serving us all.

On my visit today, my daughter bought a pair of Katie Loxton sunglasses. I must say, the lady on the till was very antisocial and rude. Walking off before finishing serving us properly. No thank you, no good bye.

We have been several times and always been impressed with the food, but today was a shadow of what we have experienced in the past. The staff were, on the whole, very short with us (pulling faces at my grandmother who is admittedly a bit doddery) and the quality of the food was poor. I had the meat and potato pie that had literally two small chunks of potato in it, and the pastry was so undercooked that I could have used it as wallpaper paste.

We come here a lot and I have to say the food is always very good, coffee is decent however, the staff really infuriate me. Every-time we come they act like they are above people, they look down on people and don’t seem to understand we are paying their wages. Before you ask why we come often considering this it’s simply for convenience, we love cannon hall and all it has to offer so it’s convenient to pop in for food or sometimes just a coffee and cake. We have spent a lot of money here over the years on the garden centre and clothes shop but it is starting to get very frustrating. They also need to find a better system for waiting customers who are out on a waiting list and asked to just wait in the garden centre to be called however if you wait too close to the entrance you are scolded like school children and asked to move away, it seems like a rue to get you to spend whilst waiting. Why can’t you just call to book like normal restaurants? Please treat your staff to some customer service training and get them to show the customer some love 🥰

Food and service are great. However cakes look lovely but are made with cheapo ingredients (industrial tasteless veggie oil, no butter). They do serve Marshfields ice cream though which is lovely.

Pleasantly surprised at the good value. We thought the prices would be much higher with cannon Hall being full of tourists. We got roses for a fiver, a ten quid Japanese maple and a few other plants for our community garden. The ice cream hut outside is very very expensive for tiny portions but that aside we thought it was great.

I lack confidence at putting outfits together.!!!!!!! Well, the wonderful lady in the clothing dept. has amazing abilities, and instinctively knows what elements of an outfit go together perfectly. She is really talented, and nothing is too much trouble. I am beyond thrilled with the outfits, that she put together for me. I had a lovely shopping experience, and left feeling very happy.

Love this place. The shop is lovely and they've extended it more as of late. Thyme bistro is also excellent for lunch and offers a wide range of food. Great for gift shopping, garden shopping or lunch with a nice view.

Always nice food although the sausages at breakfast time are now very thin, used to big fat sausages. Can be a bit of a wait at busy times, but that just makes time to look around the gift shop/garden centre.

Good place to visit. Queue for the cafe but they took our names and called us when a table came available. Disappointed with the chai latte as it was only just warm when brought to the table.

Nice little garden centre just across the road from main car park at Canon Hall. Nice range of indoor and outdoor plants. Small clothing dept selling Joules and Barbour. Nice restaurant.

Garden Centre has good range of more mature plants but quite expensive. Very popular. Parking area packed and having to pay a pain.

Really productive visit to the garden centre. Fantastic array of plants both inside and out. But most importantly fantastic service and a wealth of knowledge from a member of staff called Stuart. A credit to the business.

Absolutely brilliant thank you so much for catering for everyone we love the doggie cafe we can have a wonderful walk with the dog and finish in the cafe for a lovely meal or just coffee and cake and special doggie sausages for reggie. Wonderful place.

not good expensive and very commercialised now

Excellent food, good service. You can't go wrong. Not the cheapest, but certainly not over priced. The burger was excellent, home made and delicious, also the beef bourguignon jacket potato was a massive tasty meal.

Tasty food, lovely atmosphere, staff friendly, will definitely return when warmer to sit outside 🙂

I’ve been a fair few times and the staff are usually very pleasant and go out of their way to help customers. Unfortunately that was not my experience today at all. I understand it is a stressful time but I was very concerned on this occasion where not one but two staff members were rude to me. Staff from the outside restaurant section and one from inside the shop. How I was spoken to and treat after being nothing but kind to them was unacceptable and I’m not in any rush to go back and spend any money there.

Came fir a breakfast with family at the terrace side of the restaurant on a cold winter morning and was most pleasantly surprised by a warm welcome by a lady called Elvyra who took our orders and made us feel very welcome. The food came very quickly, I ordered Eggs Royal and a cappuccino, and it was absolutely delicious. Will definitely be back again!

Good day out for the whole family.

Want to thank the chef, waitresses and serving staff for such a pleasant experience. Went 24th December and had a very tasty Turkey dinner. It was DELICIOUS! The Turkey was succulent and the vegetables, (plenty of them) cooked to perfection. Five clean plates. Thank you. Worth every penny. Will be back. I can definitely recommend Thyme.

Very rude staff not very Autistic friendly

A small garden centre stocking popular plants of quality but not overly expensive. Bistro is truly outstanding with a varied menu from a chef who knows his stuff. The scones would take gold in any competition. Premises immaculate and service is courteous with a smile and a chat.

Fantastic range of food for dietary restrictions, all clearly labelled. Staff are so friendly. Really lovely environment. Garden centre attached has a great range of items.

Had Sunday lunch in the covered outside seating on a rainy, cold November day with wet dogs. Nice roast and great pudding. Left much warmer, dryer and happier!

Great selection of plants and gardening tools and accessories, they also sell a range of high-end country clothing. The cafe has a great outdoor section which you can take your dog in to. Will be going again in spring.

We visit regularly a lovely place with great food and service

On the whole a good experience. Prices a little high but remains popular. Only one meal a disappointment. The meat and potato pie had v thick pastry and the gravy and red cabbage were over sweet. Bit of a shock as I am diabetic so better if this was made clear on menu. Not a choice I’ll make again. Spoke to waitress but v busy and she didn’t come back to me. Garden Centre still a treat.

Always nice food and drinks here. My daughter and partner love the chocolate Rollo cake, so we need to get some to take home. She said it still is as nice as ever.

Absolutely love it here. I often escape for a quiet coffee or stolen lunch minus the husband/children. The food is always of a high quality, service good and environment clean. This is local to me and I’m happy to play my part supporting local businesses. The shop has gorgeous homewares, good job my home isn’t bigger or I’d just be bankrupt buying items . Well done team it’s a joy to visit.

Toilets require a code and to have bought something from the cafe. Bit frustrating for us as there was a long queue and then to find pretty mediocre upkeep in there. Has there really been any issues without having a code ? The washing up station isn’t enclosed so if you come after lunch rush there is constant loud clattering (I’d recommend taking a table in the quieter spots out back - lovely with the outside heaters on too). There are some acoustic panels but perhaps a proper partition (even without a door) would absorb most of the noise. A well positioned rug in an area away from tables would also be a potential idea. Ice cream was delicious but brought out without a napkin. Great range of products and plants at the garden centre.

Nice walks and possibly the biggest gathering of dogs I've seen in one spot/park. Biggest disappointment is the coffee. Expensive, tasteless and only have soya as an alternative. Oh...and carparking is £5

Good food good service in bistro.

Ridiculously poor service. My family arrived at the Bistro at 10.40 and placed our name for a table for 7. Understandably it’s quite busy on a Sunday but after 20 minutes, we enquired again only to be told that the person who was handling the bookings hadn’t recorded our booking request and where then put back to the bottom of the queue. 15 minutes after someone came to speak to us to say that we would be next in. 5 minutes after that we enquired again about how long a table would be, only to be told that another large booking would be ahead of us. When we quizzed the same person who took our booking (twice already), they than asked who had taken the initial booking! After several minutes, this was then rectified (after almost an hour had passed. We then ordered food, paying separately as we are 3 separate households (but ordering consecutively. 2 orders arrived in reasonable time but 10-15 minutes passed between the final order meaning 1 household (with a toddler) started eating after everyone else had finished. Coupled with the poor value for money on food and drink means we will definitely think twice about coming here again.

Very disappointed to pay well over five pounds for a box of what I thought was 4 brownies which had no price on it, only to discover two brownies with one cut in half. When you pay so much for food, albeit delicious, this is meanness at its worst. I emailed for a refund and got no reply.

Excellent venue for lunch. Food delicious and service first class . Returned many times now and each time the food is of a high standard .

Great garden centre and cafe. Generally it is dog friendly but the clothing area and restaurant. If you want to eat and are accompanied by a dog you can sit outside. There are some gazebos which would allow for it even on a rainy day. The garden centre is right next to a park.

ABSOLUTELY STUNNING flowers always something new around the corner to see and purchase if you so wish.

Whether it's indoor for food or in the undercover dog restaurant, the food is always excellent and menu including Sunday specials are exceptional. But most of all...doggy sausages go down a treat.

Beautiful, and a step up from typical garden centre/cafe meals. I go frequently and love to try new menu items, as well as sticking to my favourites. Some wonderful dishes, all elevated beyond expectations, for example the home made soup... each bowl I've had has been delicious. Topped with something nice, like Crispy onion or toasted almond and served with warm crusty bread that is to die for! Utterly delicious! Specials are changed daily. My husband had the dressed crab and loved it. Again, way beyond the typical food served in other local garden centres. They serve you quickly. I've never waited long for food which is essential when eating with kids. Staff are lovely, all friendly and hard working! We will keep on returning!

Amazing food for a garden centre. I had the vegan ratatouille with orzo and tempura battered asparagus. My other half had the pan fried cod. Both were delicious, fresh and so tasty. Good sized portions too

Food & drinks, were good quality, staff were excellent, prices were low, for such quality.

First time visited cannot believe this hidden gem really a lovely place to visit. Loved the catwalk exhibition. Loved the museum. The grounds were wonderful and all of the staff really pleasant and all free of charge. This is certainly worth a visit and like my husband and I once you have been you will wish to return regularly. Excellent day out.
