The staff are welcoming, super friendly - the food was really nice. I was annoyed I didn’t have my phone on me to take photos but I had the rump steak (medium rare) and it was cooked to perfection. My mum had Lincolnshire sausages and mash which she said was lovely and really tasty. We both had dessert, I had the cheesecake and my mum had Baileys Crème Brûlée. Cheesecake was nice, my mum said the Crème Brûlée was really nice but too sweet but everyone has a different sweet tooth. I would highly recommend this restaurant, you won’t be disappointed (hopefully).

We were a party of ten celebrating mother in law's 80th birthday at her favourite restaurant. This was our second visit and I have to say I was not looking forward to it as the last time we ate here in September 2019 the food was poor. Amongst our group were two vegetarians and a vegan, so I was not holding out much hope that they would have a good experience. I was wrong - there were a number of choices to meet their dietary needs including some non mushroom choices for a mushroom hating vegetarian! The rest of our group had the Sunday lunch options. The food was tasty and portions were good. I particularly enjoyed to mushroom and stilton starter, the roast lamb which was cooked well and served with an assortment of vegetables and potatoes was also enjoyable. This wouldnt be my first choice of restaurant in Chester as the menu is quite safe and traditional but we had an enjoyable meal for a special family occasion. Service was very friendly.

I visited for lunch with some friends and had a very enjoyable visit. The staff were very efficient and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. The food was excellent, I had lamb which was very nice. I would like to try the canal barge which is another restaurant on my next visit to The Mill.

We visited as a group of four for my Mum’s 70th birthday celebration on a Saturday evening. The menu was good - three courses and coffee/mints for £25 per person. The food was excellent quality and service was great too. The Venetian themed decor was lovely and our table was in a good position. You can also have a dinner on the canal boat here, and we would like to return to try this quirky dining experience next time

Lovely food, very pleasant waiting staff and a plentiful piping hot breakfast. We were advised to go early for breakfast but we left it for 9 but as it was busy we were ushered to our table without waiting.

Very pleasant dining room looking our on the canal. Menu is a trifle limited if you want to eat here several nights but our rib eye steaks were well prepared, good quality and well priced. Bottle of French Malbec also good quality and value. Service (as with breakfast) was friendly, polite and helpful. If you asked for something - it was done.

Enjoyed afternoon tea with a group of local ladies. The restaurant is very pleasantly situated overlooking the canal with piped music from an automatic grand piano to entertain! The food was served by friendly waiters who attended to "top-up" tea pots as required. The food was good and nicely presented with the exception of the scones. Whilst they tasted fine, their appearance was not good as they were small and misshapen. Otherwise, very enjoyable afternoon.

While staying at the Mill hotel we have always eaten at this restuarant and it never disappoints. All starter, mains and desserts are delicious with fresh vegetables served with the mains and friendly efficient staff at an extremely good price (can get 2 courses for £15). If it was nearer to where I live we would be here every month.

Ice setting for a restaurant, seated by the window adjacent to the canal, with the canal boat also used for dining docked adjacent. We were staying at the Mill Hotel & Spa and rather than venture out on a rather bleak winters night opted to dine in. The restaurant was relatively quiet, with attentive waiting staff. We opted for a two course meal consisting of main and desert. The man meal was tasty, well prepared and presented. The desert menu was limited in choice but never the less enjoyable. Overall a nice meal, in nice surroundings and generally good value.

We stayed at the Mill for one night and decided to eat in on a wet and cold January night. Had a nice table by the canal. The real high point was the friendly staff... We chose the 2 course table d’hote dinner. The soup was potato and spring onion, a twist on leek and potato. Very pleasant. We both had the steamed salmon in a mild mustard sauce and it was cooked perfectly- very nice. The veg with was well cooked apart from the roast potatoes which we think we ‘twice roasted’. Didn’t really get the cheese sauce on the veg given we already had one sauce with the dish. I would probably go for good rather than very good or average but the staff saved the rating!

I did not stay at the hotel but went as part of a group to have dinner on the canal boat. The food was very good and value for money. I was very impressed with the service - the food had to be loaded onto the boat and then served, orders for drinks were also taken. This was done very efficiently by very polite and helpful staff. Canal trip was also interesting.

We visited the "Canaletto" restaurant in the Mill Hotel & Spa as we were staying there. First impressions seemed good. It is a well presented dining area and we had ordered the set 2 course meal with coffee for £14. It is a very small menu, to note.Starters came very quickly. The soup, which was served as "butternut squash, coconut and chilli" in particular was very poor. It tasted quite salty like it was mainly chicken stock based, and had absolutely no taste of squash and tasted much like a gravy. I'm not sure if it ever saw a squash. I know this because I often eat butternut squash soup.I ate it after swapping my starter with my partner as I was hungry. The mushroom and bacon in filo was a little uninspiring, but perfectly edible. The first glass of Merlot served was old and from an older opened bottle, but it was replaced and it was immediately apparent from the new glass. The vegetables that came with the main meals included what I suspect where tinned new potatoes, which you can tell because of the shape, taste and texture of tinned potatoes. The after meal coffee, which was also part of the deal was instant. For a place calling itself a restaurant, the food was generally poor in my opinion. Though it was perfectly edible, it did not seem of a good restaurant standard. It was more like poor pub cuisine. After speaking to the waiter to give him feedback, he seemed to be genuinely interested in the feedback.Just disappointing from a food perspective. Not much more to say.

We were a little apprehensive at booking lunch here as I don't think hotel restaurants always offer good value for money. But we were looking for a change as we have lunch out quite frequently in Chester, and we were also tempted by the delicious sounding menu and reasonable prices. Two courses are just under £12 and three courses cost £14 and includes coffee and mints. We were slightly unimpressed with the ambience of the hotel - last week there was a lot of decorating and work going on but I recognise that maintenance work has to take place some time. The restaurant was not very easy to find from the entrance on the other side of the canal and I have no idea how you get to the main entrance! Once in the restaurant it was lovely with the nicely spaced tables beautifully laid with linen tablecloths. We sat next to the window with a pleasant view of the canal. The staff were friendly, very attentive without being obtrusive, and very efficient. There was a good choice on the menu and when our meals arrived they were well presented, perfectly cooked and the portions were generous. We also each had a dish of vegetables which were well cooked and plentiful. The dessert menu was also quite varied and a cheese course was also included at no extra cost. These days this usually attracts a supplement. So, we were very impressed with our experience and will certainly go again.

We were staying at the hotel and after beings disappointed at the boat cruise being fully booked, we thought we'd try the restaurant, after a bit of deciding back and too, we booked for half 8. The wine list was exquisite, we ordered a bottle of Italian Pinot and I requested a glass of the Cabernet-Sauvignon with my main course, both were fantastic. We both had the soup of the day; potato and spinach, and it was seasoned well and a nice combination. My girlfriend had her first ever steak, and polished it off surprisingly! I ordered the Surf and Turf off the other menu, and it was flambéed in brandy at the table for me, and cooked to my request perfectly; without doubt the best steak I've ever eaten. To finish I had one Irish coffee, and to be perfectly honest for the quality we had, I wouldn't have minded paying more for the bill, definitely would return the next time we stay at the hotel.

Ground floor of the Mill Hotel, the entrance to which is approached through what seems like a building site but do not let that put you off. Good beers in the bar and jazz on a Monday night. The restaurant is very attractive and fresh classical (red carpets, white pillars, simulations of you-know-whose paintings) with one wall looking out onto the canal. The staff were very good, attentive but not overbearing. The food was excellent value for money and the wine list was more than adequate. The only thing that stops me giving the best rating was the digital piano. A great idea but the quality of the playing was poor and grated after a while.

Great food, great service, friendly staff (particular thanks to the Maitre 'D - Ray, who is leaving soon to look after his wife). The food was well cooked, well presented and in our case - well eaten! If I was to criticise Canaletto it would be because in the main body of the restaurant the tables are possibly too close together - you certainly notice that whilst the breakfast buffet is in full swing!

We ate here on a busy Saturday night but the service was excellent. We had a three course meal at a price of £22.00 per person (this may have been cheaper as we were staying the hotel). We had a salmon and prawn terrine for starter which was so fresh and tasty. I had rib eye steak for main - medium rare - and my husband had pork loin with a honey and mustard sauce - both cooked to perfection - and a vegetable medley was served on a separate crescent shaped plates - carrotts, cauliflower cheese, new potatoes and roast potatoes. The steak was so tender and melted in your mouth. The pork was tasty and juicy. My husband had meringue with a summer fruit moose (very tasty) and I had cheese and biscuits with stilton, cheddar and wensleydale. This was followed by lovely coffee and after dinner mints. The plates were hot, the meal was hot and the food was excellent. Great food at a great price. Can't recommend highly enough.
