Callenders Restaurant in Wealden

Specials on the chalk board offered a great variety of locally sourced products to supplement the menu. Spoiled for choice! An independent restaurant featuring fresh food prepared by a real chef, served with pride at prices that won't break the bank. Service staff always lovely and attentive without hanging over you. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

This restaurant was recommended by friend so thought we'd give it a go. No complaints with anything only observations. Firstly it didn't exactly feel like an occasion to dine out with people sitting on a nearby table wearing trackies, sweatshirts and quite a few children under 10. Now i'm not a snob but when I go out to a "fine dining" establishment but it's not quite what I was hoping for. We were made very welcome and the staff were very attentive. When the menu books were presented to us the 1st thing we noticed was how tired and worn they were. The offerings inside were numerous but the emphasis was on a lot of deep fried options. Starters weren't exactly exciting or challenging but having said that our Garlic mushrooms were tasty enough. Mains choices were better although most you could find on a reasonable Pub menu. I had the Venison Shank, my partner the Venison Steak. Again well presented and cooked nicely, great to have it served on piping hot plates as well. As stated above no complaints. My honest opinion is that its a few steps up from a cafe and a few steps down from a classy restaurant, yet with a bit of work it could lifted to be the latter. Desserts were lovely but nothing out of the ordinary. A specials board gave a few more choices for the three categories. Although having said all that above , the prices were extremely affordable for the fare provided. So perhaps this is not the aim of the owners to be a higher end business. In which case they have found their niche. Overall we enjoyed our trip to Callenders but may leave our return for a while longer yet

Sunday roast very tasty and good value. Excellent service.

I went here with a friend who had been previously and she said she had a better experience than our visit! I could not fault the service from the lady waitress, friendly, attentive, and timings were perfect. We both had the chicken snitzel. My friends chicken was pink and not cooked inside. We had dessert, and her rice pudding was delicious, apparently. My Treacle tart was hard and dry. So much so that it got stuck in my throat and brought tears to my eyes. I had trouble speaking afterwards! The atmosphere is lacking, and it is hard to put your finger on why. No ambience. The toilets were also dirty. Not one for me, disappointing 😕

I joined a group of friends for a Christmas meal in Callenders. There was a good selection of food on the set Christmas Menu, and each dish was both filling and delicious. Excellent service all evening.

Fabulous steak, and this white wine was iconic, plus waitress was a delight, would wholly recommend!

After years of not being at home, I went to Callenders again. I tell people I meet how great this chef is. Today, I was at home with my wife and we walked to Callenders and it was great. I had time to talk to my wife, the staff were attentive, the atmosphere is how I remembered, and, the most important point, is that the food was great! My fillet steak perfect... as I remembered. Brilliant

I ordered a takeaway from here to be delivered as I had heard great reviews. I am so impressed, the food arrived piping hot and in a very good time. It was the most delicious food and fantastic value for money. The lady on the phone was extremely friendly and helpful. I will definitely be eating here again, 100%. Very highly recommend!

The triple chocolate cheesecake is fantastic. Not oversweet so totally enjoyable as an ending to a meal.

We’ve just been to Callenders for the 3 course Xmas menu……amazing value at £29.95 a head. Especially when you’re completely confident in the freshness of the ingredients used. We had a range of dishes between the 11 of us, all which were enjoyed immensely, one of our party had the Sword fish which she said was absolutely superb. I thoroughly enjoyed my Tortillas, Turkey and Pear crumble (but I was very jealous of my friends soup which also looked amazing)! I don’t think there was a negative word said from any of us and the service was impeccable, as always. We like to come here with family and friends when we can and will always recommend it here. On a separate occasion we had our (extremely well-behaved) two year old grandson with us and the interaction from the staff was excellent, and made us feel very relaxed and welcome. Well done on creating such a fabulous restaurant.

Can’t comment on the food as we didn’t have any. My husband booked us a table for my birthday a week in advance. When we arrived they had a record of our booking but there wasn’t a table for us. The staff offered to bring out a table for us but the only place it could be put was in front of the bar in the way of staff coming to & from the kitchen. Not happy but went elsewhere & had a lovely meal. Won’t book again.

A great find. We visited twice this weekend, as we enjoyed it so much! The staff are very friendly, and the food is excellent. It is so good we have booked our next visit already.

Very poor quality of food, burned burgers, hard chips, steaks still fridge cold on inside, went there for my daughters birthday, they said it was a good place to eat, I'd disagree, my daughter said its not normally that bad. And no latte either, my son in law spent alot of money in there.

This was our first time at Callenders, meeting with friends who are regulars there and we will definitely be back! Food was lovely and cooked very well (big portions!) The 2 members of staff who were serving our table were amazing - very polite and friendly which can be a rarity nowadays.

Had an Amazing lunch today at Calenders Restaurant, and served by a lovely member of staff Killian. Food was cooked and presented to a high standard. Will be going regularly from now!

I have been going here for over 3 years now, and we are still impressed with the food and service every time. Staff are always so pleasant and attentive and are genuinely want you to be happy and comfortable. Two of you can quite easily have have a meal , desert, and drinkies for £40 especially on a Friday. A must try, in my opinion.

Just visited with my disabled Mum and we were very impressed, Excellent service and beautifully cooked food. Clearly a skilled chef. We opted for the 3 course lunch menu and were highly satisfied. Great value for money too. Highly recommended

Superb food and service at Calenders for reasonable prices. For starters, the home made duck liver pate was full and rich,; the whitebait were big, soft, and delicate. For the mains, the beef brisket was tender with gravy that had deep dark beef marrow flavours. The duck was perfectly cooked and the tart red cabbage with it worked really well. For dessert, the bakewell tart cheesecake was terrific as was the rhubarb merangue.

We had dinner at Callender’s for a work night out and we were not disappointed. The staff were really friendly and helpful and the food was superb. Every one of us had a clean plate at the end…not a crumb was left! We will certainly be going again.

Nice meal but left really disappointed that despite checking when we booked, if we could use tastecard, and told yes, on coming to pay the chef said No. We try and support local small businesses especially in these tight times and were frustrated that we were given incorrect information. We would only have had a main meal had we known.

Food and staff ok shame they didn't have all what was on the limited menu. Could definitely do with some new practical flooring as needs it due to it being very worn and sticky.

1st time in here for a meal, the staff are all lovely, very clean,nice atmosphere. starter and main for £15.49. Absolutely stunning, the first meal in a long time where I could actually taste the food and not pepper, no pepper at all on my food, it was delicious and plenty of it. Compliments to the chef. Don't let the exterior of this lovely restaurant put you off, as inside is very cute, comfortable and the food is divine. Had the Sunday lunch which was lovely, came with yorkshire puds, roast potatoes and some seasonal veg. Opted to order the cauliflower cheese...

Visited today with no expectations. We all came out very well fed with the delightful feeling that the food was fresh and cooked properly. Fantastic value for quality food. Excellent atmosphere and super staff. Will definitely be going back .

We thought we'd try this take away as two of us are gluten free. Trying to get gluten free meals can be very difficult. It offers a great selection of delicious meals instead of indian/chinese/fish and chips. We fed the 5 of us for less than £50! Great service and food. We will definitely be back for more!

Great service, great value, exceptional quality.

Was just out for a meal after Chrismas lights turn on. Didn't end up that way. Excellent service, excellent quality food. Sarted with the pigeon perfect Next up Suet steak and kidney perfect. Topped off with a whisky bread and butter pudding perfect. Exceptional def going back. And just a walk away.

Have been to Callenders for the steak night plus had Sunday lunches in the last month. The food was excellent each time. Every member of our group of 8 enjoyed their meals which included venison steak, fillet steak, sirloin steak, T bone steak and burgers....

Excellent food - pleasant atmosphere - The sea bass was the best I have eaten on my trip. The banofffee Pie was a dream.

Moved to Hailsham a few months eaten here a couple of times now. Tonight after a day at Bodiam Catsle we chose to try a take out. Easy to order, and after a short wait to amazing local venison burgers with sides arrived. Beautifully cooked...

Been to callenders many times as well as takeaways..but last night first time .we booked a table for the friday night is steak night...what a very pleasant surprise.the steak etc fantastic..superbly cooked just as you like your steak..many many thanks.to all staff..well well worth it.

We weren't sure where to go for a meal yesterday but decided to go to Callenders in Hailsham. What a good choice! All 4 of us had a lovely meal. The menu offered a wide and varied choice covering starters, main meal and dessert. We ate fish, pasta, steak and salad for our starters and main course and all were very good indeed. The cheesecake, tart and creme brulee for dessert were equally good. It's bigger inside the restaurant than it appears and the tables are a good size nicely spaced out and there is a nice atmosphere with friendly and pleasant staff. Everyone got their meal at the same time. We didn't drink much alcohol, but they've got a nice lager and a pear cider if you want one plus a very wide variety of other beers and wines. The cost of our thorougly enjoyable 3 course meal was very reasonable. Bonus: There's a free car park just a few yards away! Most definitely worth a visit.

Today we had our Sunday dinner as a takeaway from Callenders. It was absolutely fantastic! There wasn’t anything to moan about in-fact the complete opposite. Thank you so much for the beautiful and very tasty lunch!

First ever visit, staff were very attentive and polite. Service was very efficient. Prices seemed very reasonable. I had tried to find some information before going about whether they were child friendly and couldn't see anything! So they had a high chair and offered my children colouring pencils and paper, but there is no childrens menu (my children are 2 and 3) so would not eat or appreciate an adult meal, luckily they were happy to bring an extra plate for my children to share an adult main, but not alot on the menu suitable for them.

We had pre-booked for 8 of us on a Saturday night. Very friendly staff and food was really nice. I had the steak and Kidney pudding and it was excellent. Prices are reasonable as well. If you want a nice meal with a friendly atmosphere, then give this a try.

Very young inexperienced staff. I have to say the meal was not great. Two of us ordered the mixed meat I ended up with hree slices of beef and a very small portion of Turkey. Yet we were still charged for the mixed roast. I am not a lover of meat especially beef so left two slices. The turkey was tough and left. The vegetables were delicious. The gravey was a water texture a little thin for me although that is personal preference. Staff were not bothered alternative offered

I have had the profiteroles before, but today's were exceptionally wonderful. I had brisket and my partner the garlic mushroom chicken the vegetables were really fresh and perfectly cooked. It is always very good at Callanders, but the chocolate sauce on today's profiteroles was exceptional. Apparently the cheesecake was really good too.

Callenders has been on my door step for years. I have had many pints in the Grenadier opposite and walked passed this restaurant many times without giving it a thought. The truth is my subconscious mind had discounted it and prejudged the place. I was convinced that it was somewhere that I would not enjoy eating in. I certainly would not have booked a table there myself. However Saturday night my wife had booked a table for the family, my heart sank a little bit when she told me where we were going, however what a fool I was. The restaurant was clean well decorated and had a pleasant feel to it. All The staff were very friendly, efficient and talkative a lovely young lad primarily looked after our table. The food was piping hot and fantastic. The service fast and efficient. Our family had a wide choice of food from their menu and there was no complaints. It’s the best meal I have had for sometime. I have been missing out. I will however rectify that going forward and will be returning.

Our first visit to Callenders certainly won't be our last. The waiter was attentive & very professional without being over much. The food was freshly & superbly cooked not reheated as you find in some Restaurants. Local produce is used. We have eaten in Restaurants in the West End of London & New York & Callenders is easily as good.

This restaurant serves the best roast Sunday lunch in the area. Felt so good to be able to go back recently and we were not disappointed. Staff always helpful and friendly. Highly recommended.

We have travelled to the area from Wales to visit a family member who recommended this restaurant and brought us here for food. We had an amazing evening. The food was amazing, couldn't fault a thing. The lady that served us was fantastic. Possibly the best service I've ever received, she couldn't do enough to make our experience special. My partners brother has disabilities and learning difficulties and left most of his food. We explained to the lady that the food was fine but he is a very fussy eater but she took his meal off the bill anyway. They couldn't do enough for us. They clearly love what they do and care about their customers. When we come to the area again we will make sure we visit this restaurant again. Thank you for an amazing experience. We all thoroughly enjoyed.

First time at callenders restaurant, book in for xmas dinner, sorry to say the food was not of a good quality, vegetables under cooked, in fact the only good thing was the baked potatoes, and dessert was supposed to be a chocolate cake, and in fact it was a chocolate swiss roll, not what I call restaurant food, will not be be returning back.

Oh my!! Absolutely loved the food here. Was so tasty and fresh. Definitely be back again.
