Bucklers in Wealden

Melvyn (the manager) managed to get us in even though they were really busy, I’m so glad he did. The chorizo hash was amazing, I really enjoyed it as did my fiancée. The whole atmosphere is great, a welcoming environment that is a step up from a normal cafe setting. It has vibes of sophistication but not pretentious, also great value for money. Quality food, in a nice atmosphere all at sensible pricing. Will definitely recommend BUT make sure you book as they are busy.

Been here for the same food a couple of times over the last 2 weeks, today their prices have increased by 20% quite a lot I think and hadn’t seen any mention of it beforehand. I know everything has gone up but maybe 10% would seem fair.

The last time we went to Bucklers was in 2019 pre COVID and we were so pleased to find it was still trading. Our memory was of a lovely, friendly cafe with super food. I'm happy to report that Bucklers was as good as we remembered. Great atmosphere, lovely staff and great food. Its a little gem - well done the Bucklers tesm😊

Our whole experience at this cafe could have been so much different if one simple change was implemented and all ingredients included on the menu. The cafe is fairly smartly laid out and looks nice inside. We sat at a table and looked at the drinks menu. We couldn't find a food menu, so I went to the counter and was told by the young lady that she would bring some over. In returning to the table, we noticed that it required cleaning. The same young lady came over in a very uninterested, laxidasical manner. We asked if the table could be cleaned, which was met with a sigh of inconvenience. The young lady returned, sprayed the table a few times and then in a lacklustre manner wiped a few circular motions on the table in a way which would indicate that the table was very delicate or that she didn't want to hurt it as there was a significant lack of effort or elbow grease. We ordered drinks only for the young lady to return and inform us that they were out of peppermint tea. As my wife always carries tea bags in her handbag I asked for hot water. We waited quite a while for our food to arrive and to be fair it was nicely presented. My wife's wrap was warm which she was pleased with, but on taking the first bite quickly established that the tuna contained cold sweetcorn. The menu stated tuna, green leaves and mayo - no mention of sweetcorn. Any fellow sweetcorn disliker will know how awful the taste of cold sweetcorn is in tuna. Surely in today's world of food allergies etc, all ingredients should be listed on a menu? My wife called over a lady who may have been the manager or owner. We explained that the sweetcorn wasn't mentioned on the menu, and my wife was offered the chance to order something different or they could check to see if a tuna wrap without sweetcorn could be made. There was no real acknowledgement of the fact that this was excluded from the menu. My wife asked for a tuna wrap. I had ordered eggs benedict which was well presented, and was pleasant enough. Not the best eggs benedict that I've ever had, but not the worse. I had finished my meal and my wife was still waiting for her new wrap to arrive. At this time I decided to move our car as the one hour parking was coming to an end and we had been in the cafe for around 40 minutes. On returning to the cafe my wife's wrap had arrived. There was no apology for the wait. This time the wrap was cold and there was no mayo in the wrap. On biting into the wrap a significant amount of water poured from it hitting the plate, bouncing of the table and splashing all down my wife's new top. At this point my wife wasn't the happiest of people and ate very little of the wrap. After using the bathroom, which to be fair has the nice touch of having complimentary female hygiene products and baby wipes/nappies, we decided to leave. At no point during our time at the cafe were we asked if everything was ok, and this was the same when we went to the counter to pay. The young uninterested lady was at the till. I said to her that it maybe worth advising the kitchen staff to drain tuna in future to ensure that the water didn't splash all over customers clothes and was met with a blank look of bemusement. I paid the bill and we left. It wasn't until later that I realised that a hot chocolate and bottle of water either costs £6.70 or I was charged for the peppermint tea that I didn't have. Additionally the stain has not come out of my wife's new top so that is another wasted £20.00. The strange thing is that the atmosphere in the cafe was very flat, the staff uninterested and there is more life in a cemetery. However, the choice of music being played was the total opposite - Creep by Radiohead, which if you know the lyrics you'll totally understand the amazement that it was being played in this sort of establishment, and Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana, again a surprising choice. Just imagine how different our experience could have been if the menu had mentioned the fact that the tuna contained sweetcorn. I think we could have put up with the uninterested staff and waiting times, but the whole sweetcorngate issue and ruined top would certainly put us off going back. However, offering to replace my wife's ruined top would be a welcome gesture, but then they would have known about the issue if the staff had shown some interest and asked us how things were. All in all a very strange experience, some good points totally let down by staff attitude and lack of interest.

Been a frequent customer since Bucklers was opened. Great food and service. Recommend a visit..... B12 in the High Street is part of the group. Great venue, service and food.

Had lunch with some friends and our babies, the service is always great and food delicious. Plenty of choice on the menu, every dish sounds tasty so it’s difficult to decide what to eat! The chai latte was lovely and I selected the avocado dish for my lunch with some extra bacon. Relaxed spot to eat, super friendly and we always feel welcome. Brilliant changing facilities for our little ones and they go the extra mile by offering some nappies (and other hygiene products) if for any reason you have baby brain and forget them. Look forward to returning.

Service was slow breakfast was cold, I asked for well cooked tomatoes and they were raw and hard,it was a family birthday breakfast so did not complain. Other members of the party also thought the breakfast was cold and not good value for money Would I go back NO

Enjoy eating here - always busy so maybe book a table if you don’t like waiting. Seats inside and outside. Menu is good and we enjoyed our brunch. Lovely mushrooms on toast and a sweet potato rosti avocado dish. (See photos). Coffee is tasty too. Service is good although can feel a little laid back but that was ok with us as we had time. So not an issue for us but if you are short of time be aware. Shame gluten free blueberry pancakes have been taken off the menu - Miss those!! Hope they can come back. Enjoy eating here and will be back.

Very nice quality breakfast. Coffee was great. Good service. It was busy but the food didn't take to long. Only complaint the music was way to loud.

We waited ages for two simple drinks. We then waited even longer for two breakfasts. No apology was made for the wait so I guess it's normal for food to take that long to come out. When it finally arrived it was very disappointing. Nothing bad enough to complain about at the time - just mediocre food you'd expect from a cheap pub. Hard to get a server's attention too. Not a great experience and will not be returning.

Enjoyed our breakfast - gluten free blueberry American pancakes with fruit kebabs ( chose not to have the sauces with it) and avocado on toast with poached eggs. Lots of choice on menu. Tasty coffee and tea served in very unusual teapot. Staff helpful. Seats outside and inside.

Awful music- very difficult to have a conversation . Ordered drinks and they took ages to come. Food was very good and I enjoyed my meal. Service slow and just not good. My friends shared my views.

The staff were lovely but the coffee was mediocre and I had probably the worst almond croissant I’ve ever eaten. Bit of a disappointment

Husband and I have been in twice recently. First time was a poor experience . After placing out order (just coffee and cake) we waited a very long time. There was one waitress taking orders- no other staff visible. Eventually several members of staff appeared - apparently they had been having a staff meeting. Why this could not be done before opening I don't know. There were a lot of orders waiting but after complaining we did get our coofee and cake fairly soon and we were not charged for the coffee. The coffee and cake were both good. We decided to give them another try today and sevice was better though for some reason the waitress brought our coffee , then took food to another table then brought our cake. I don't understand why she could not bring both together- how dificult it is to cut a piece of cake? Why not bring both together? . They just don't seem to get it quite right.

I love this place, it has such a lovely atmosphere, staff are welcoming and friendly, food is tasty and the best Mocha :)

Popped in earlier this week for brunch. Had a very tasty sweet potato rosti. Coffee great too. Also couldn’t leave without buying a cheeky sausage roll from the deli counter. So good.

I’ve been to Bucklers a handful of times with friends and never been disappointed! Their breakfast and lunch menu are fab and there’s lots to choose from.The place is clean and the staff are super friendly.A really lovely local place to go if you’re in the area!

Went for lunch with son, served by a lovely friendly waitress who brought fantastic coffees and a really tasty sandwich and a tea cake. Cafe really clean and felt a very safe experience. Highly recommend.

Came here twice as it was so good! Eggs Royale was amazing! The smoked salmon so incredible! My partner also had the breakfast sandwich which was great. Service was great, felt very comfortable with cleaning procedures and staff took details for track and trace.

My daughter and I had lunch here yesterday and it was delicious!The staff are so friendly and attentive especially Nick, he is definitely in the right job!!! Happy smiling face and good sense of humour. We come here on a regular basis and to B12, definitely the best places to eat in Hailsham.Thank you Melvyn!!!

Had an amazing time here for brunch this morning and the staff were absolutely amazing! I couldn’t fault the food or the service and would recommend the establishment to everyone I know. Thank you to the staff for making us all feel comfortable and happy and hope to see you again soon!

Vegan breakfast is absolutely delicious! Only complaint is that you’re not given enough beans! Other than that though, it’s delicious

took a friend in here for a meal on their birthday. very good meal it was too. helpful staff and reasonably priced meals. certainly will go there again.

Came for a few drinks & a bite to eat with my husband at around 2.30 Ordered a drink, wine & a pint of beer. My wine came but no beer, why didn’t they come together? Takes 2 mins! Had to ask where the beer was before it arrived..I had avocado with salsa & hummus on brown, my husband had the macaroni cheese. Was expecting a big portion of macaroni as at £11.95, it’s expensive, it’s only pasta after all & it’s hailsham it’s not a super wow restaurant more a cafe type place. Very small square bowl, with token rocket & bread. Very disappointing. My sandwich was nice although I would have liked more filling. Hardly any humous or salsa but adequate avocado. £32 overall very over priced for very average food....

Had breakfast here with a friend. Service great, lovely little bistro/cafe, food was good too. May stop for lunch soon too

Went here for lunch on Saturday and loved it so much I went back on Monday! Friendly welcoming atmosphere and lovely fresh local food. Generous portions and lots of choice. Definitely recommend.

I visit Bucklers for a simple wrap/sandwich lunch probably 2 times per month. The atmosphere is nice, modern and friendly. I visited for lunch with family today and had the fish finger sandwich which was delicious. My Mum had the avocado wrap and felt somewhat disappointed in the ratio of filling to wrap. My 8 year old daughter had the children’s pasta and was unhappy with it (embarrassed by it actually). Usually when we get a children’s meal, the portion size is appropriate for her age. This pasta would have been enough for a 3/4 year old and was on a childish plate, which was a bit embarrassing for an 8 year old girl. I have to say, it wasn’t the nicest looking pasta dish either - a bit of basic tomato sauce and a few sprinkles of cheese. She ate it but made comment that it was just because she was hungry. I got her a snack on the way home. I enjoyed my lunch but felt disappointed for my family.

Sweet little cafe in walk way off Hailsham High Street. Good coffee and a lovely cheese or fruit scone came with mine. Lovely friendly atmosphere. Gets busy at lunchtimes so may be best to miss that if you can. Very clean and tidy.

Bucklers is a great eaterie in a pretty little mews of shops just off the High Street. This upmarket 'Cafe' offers a relaxed friendly atmosphere, with nicely spaced tables with no danger of easily overhearing other conversations. The service is timely and pleasantly informal and nothing is too much trouble, menus can be adapted as food is cooked to order. No cook-chill here! Tasty and some unique dishes catering for all dietary choices and requirements. A good choice of dishes for vegans and yummy deserts. Sit and chat for a while without feeling rushed to vacate. Another all round comfortable experience. Thank you.

Tasty panini, plenty of filling and nice touch with the fresh fruit. Coffee good, service good, bit slow clearing tables around us especially when delivering our food and going back to kitchen empty handed walking past the tables that needed clearing!

Enjoyed an excellent breakfast in Bucklers this weekend. Very efficient and friendly service too. Would recommend, there is a good choice of dishes on the menu and most tastes seem to be catered for.

This small but cozy restaurant is a lovely place. The food was excellent and good value. We found the staff to be very friendly and the service was good, didn't have to wait a long time between courses but not rushed at all. Would definitely recommend a visit.

I tried here for the first time with my elderly Grandfather. We booked as had been told it gets busy and the staff organised an easily accessible table near the door.

Really nice little place to sit outside and people watch. Although mainly a gin bar, they were accommodating enough to get a brandy in for us and also supply it in nice glasses. They also own the Deli a few doors down which is equally nice

We ordered a selection of breakfasts including the Bucklers breakfast, scrambled egg and eggs benedict. All absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection. Staff are very friendly and helpful and the cafe decor has a lovely peaceful feel to it.

This has become one of my favourites, only lunch stops now working back in the town. Not only do they cater for a quick lunch turn around in your break, but a nice leisurely account, never rushed and always taken very good care off. With the best service, best food and after a mothers approval after taking for lunch this place have got it made. Carry on keeping up the good work and I will be in soon.

We arrived after going to two other coffee shops in Hailsham and not staying for coffee. We were met with a bright smile and invited to take a seat, we’ll come over to you. It’s a pleasant atmosphere and flowers on the table. We were served quickly with a lady who was smiling and happy to serve. The cake looked delicious and tasted it! The coffee was good to. We have decided to use this coffee shop again and also visit one night when it is opened as a restaurant gin bar!.

3rd time we've eaten here. It's a small little informal eatery in the middle of Hailsham and unsurprisingly was busy at peak lunch time because the menu is good, the food great and the staff excellent

Stopped here while cycling on the cuckoo trail for a coffee. Nice location, cakes, service and cracking cheese scones, yum!

I haven been here twice for breakfast and it is absolutely amazing. Took my little girls this time who was doted on and encouraged to make her own choice of breakfast with the help of the waitress who was lovely (it was her first day, sorry can't remember her name). I had the eggs royale and it's one of the best ever eaten (and I have had a fair few in my time!!!). It it wasn't so early in would have tried one of you many gins. No question if I'd come back......I'd walk from eastbourne if I had too!!

I had this hankering for a toasted hot cross bun with my morning coffee.First cafe couldn’t help. Popped our heads in Buvklers to ask and they too hadn’t got any. Difference was they said come in and have coffee and leave it with them. Few minutes later my friend and I had a cup of steaming coffe followed by two toasted hot cross buns each. The owner had gone off to buy some for us and didn’t charge either.

Have been in a few times during the day for a quick coffee and lunch. Always warm and friendly with great quality food and drink.

Visited for breakfast recently, four adults plus baby, and received a warm welcome on arrival.

Been a few times for lunch and enjoy the food and the friendly service. They get very busy here so don’t go for a quiet chat!

We visited for breakfast, would recommend the smashed avo. Had loads of options for meat eaters, veggies and vegans. Start were lovely, cafe was well decorated and clean. It was brilliant. Will definitely be visiting again.

The best thing about this place was the efficient and friendly group of staff. So often you encounter dull and/or disinterested waiting staff, which colours the whole experience, but these guys and girls were on the ball. An interesting selection of panini (accompanied, uniquely, by a small bowl of fruit) which could have been presented with a little more panache, but which tasted good. A small, busy and noisy dining room, but a pleasant ambience. I noted that this cafe opens for dinner on a couple of nights per week - curious to know if they are able to create something a little less hectic in the evenings.

Visited with friends to celebrate a birthday on a Thursday evening. Great Gin menu, delicious food, friendly staff, great ambience. Would definately return

Came here for a third and sadly, last time today. Love the interior and the coffee is great, but food is so overpriced and not as wow as it thinks it is. Today, the food was appalling. Little things matter when paying £7+ for a sandwich (£8 to £10 pounds if you want a few chips). You can’t expect to put a small bowl of fruit next to a crappy sandwich and get to call it good. The sandwiches also come with large slathers of marg that I forget to ask not to have. Yet again it’s another ‘ emperors new clothes’ eatery, where we locals, starved of somewhere good and different to eat, put up with not so good through lack of choice. Meh.

I had coffee and cake with a friend in this restaurant. Staff were very welcoming and friendly. Cake was delicious. A very nice place for a small town. We will be returning.

Always a pleasure to visit Melvyn and co at this little restaurant/cafe which morphs into a gin bar restaurant in the evenings. Good food and the best selection of gins around! Good service and atmosphere as always full! Drinks aren't cheap and would love a bit more choice on the menu but we love it!

Visited for lunch. 2 coffees were ordered separately 10 mins apart, one was good and one was bad, straight away all you ask for is consistency which wasn’t there and would worry me if I decided to visited again. One flat white was made with good microfoam and one was boiling hot and contained no microfoam just boiling hot unfrothed milk. It’s served in a glass which couldn’t be picked up due to being too hot for 5 minutes unlike the first coffee which was perfect.

If you love Gin this is the place to go, Melvyn really knows his stuff. Great selection of food and always great service. Highly recommend for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just drinks...wether it be with friends, family or alone it’s always a very welcoming place to go

I’ve never had to leave a negative review before but unfortunately today the service was so disappointing that I feel compelled to do so! We visited Bucklers today after a friend’s recommendation. We arrived at a quarter to three. We had our baby in a pushchair & asked the staff where was best to sit. The staff were not at all friendly and pointed to the tables at the back which had not been cleared, I ended up moving the dirty plates off of the table myself despite there being three members of staff standing around. Not a great start! Then it took a member of staff 10 minutes to come to our table and proceed to tell us that because it was now 3 o’clock they were no longer serving food! So disappointing! We promptly left and went to Prezzos instead!

I came here with a large party of people for a Christmas meal and wasn't disappointed. The butternut squash soup was nice, the duck that I had for main tasted good, and the raspberry cheesecake was very nice. Service was prompt, polite and efficient (which in some places can be rare), and considering there were two large tables of us I was impressed with the speed and accuracy at which the food was bought out and the clear plates were taken away. I will be back with my partner at some point for food and drinks.

My first visit to Bucklers and what a great evening it was. A full restaurant a fantastic meal and excellent staff, you guys have it all. Well done and thank you for a superb evening, we shall definitely be back. Have a great Christmas.

This is the second time I have eaten here. Both times the food has been delicious and the staff are very friendly. Ambience is nice and they have recently opened a lovely deli a few doors down. Only tried the breakfast so far but very tempted by both their lunch and evening menus. Absolutely recommend.

I took a group of girls from work to Bucklers for a celebratory night out and wasn’t disappointed. We ordered food from the tapas style menu and drinks from the extensive gin menu! The food was delicious and drinks were served beautifully. The only problem was that the table wasn’t big enough to accommodate all our food and drinks...we soon ate our way through and solved that minor issue!

This restaurant offers very tasty, locally sourced food. Very friendly staff and good prices. Highly recommend.

I found this place quite by accident after bumping into the owner when I was lost and looking for a decent coffee. Lovely place, great staff, perfect coffee and gorgeous food, especially enjoyed the portobello mushrooms stuffed with goats cheese. All the food looked great and the customers, most of whom seemed to be known well by the staff, were very happy with all their food choices. Very highly recommended.

Thanks so much Bucklers for a fabulous gin evening . Wonderful varied gins, gorgeous food and excellent service in a great atmosphere! Really enjoyed trying the different gins and the well thought out menu and learning from a gin expert !

We go for lunch to have a catch up. Always great food with fantastic friendly service. Even the wrap comes with little extras that make it, like a few crisps on the side with a small bowl of fruit. Great place to eat.

Popped in for lunch a couple of weeks back on way through Hailsham. Thought it was excellent. The owner was very friendly and looked after us wonderfully. Great menu that was very reasonably priced, finally decided to have a salad and a burger and they were both amazing. Great selection of gin shame it was lunch time. Will definitely go back if ever in Hailsham again.

Me and my husband stopped off for lunch,friendly staff, great food and lovely selection of gins. He had the burger and I had the chicken and halumi burger, everything was fresh and tasted great. Will be back soon.

I have visited Bucklers with my fiance, with my family, and with friends - for breakfast, afternoon tea, and dinner and I cannot find fault with anything, the service, the quality of the food and the ambience is just perfect no matter what time I'm there.

Had a lovely visit with my 4month old and mum, we were given plenty of room for his pram and had great service. Food was amazing and we will be back soon!

Our very first visit. I had avocado with tomato & poached eggs. My husband had scrambled eggs with salmon. Both delicious, although would have liked a little more avocado, as only a small amount on the middle of the sliced brown toast and not to the edges ... but thoughly enjoyed just the same & would def return.

The food, service, atmosphere and most importantly the gin is amazing. Anyone with a food intolerance (or without!!!) must must visit as they cater for everyone. Working through the 69 gins they have and can’t wait to go back for my 5th visit!!

Lovely little place for a bite or just coffee and cake. I'm always pleased to see the owner there when I visit as he's rather gorgeous! Their gin night was great fun and very good value.

Had lunch here on an unplanned trip to Hailsham. Lovely food, great service. Will definitely return.

Yesterday we had the most fabulous tapas dishes. We collected the mostly prepared dishes from Bucklers on Saturday afternoon, kept them chilled ready for our get together Sunday. Every single dish was quite superb. I must also mention the breads. I simply warned them in the oven for about 5/6 minutes and they were delicious. Soft and light in the middle but crusty and crisp on the outside. The selection of tapas included, meatballs, monkfish, ham wrapped asparagus, pigs cheeks with mash (so scrummy), Patata bravas, mushrooms in garlic, and a selection of cold meats. All I had to do was warm then through and cook the monkfish. Faultless. We’ll be back for more without a doubt.

Went for a brunch with niece and ordered soup n some sandwidth...though i found soup was a bit thick but good service with a smile made up for the miss..this was my 2nd visit and surely recommend this place..keep smiling.

I you like gin this is a must visit place. With over 60 different gins to choose from, you will have to come back time and time again. The staff are very friendly and nothing is to much trouble. By the way the food is good to.

The food menu was simple but of a good selection and when our meal arrived it was hot and delicious. Lovely to see someone trying to put some originality in to a business in Hailsham. St Mary’s Walk is a credit to Hailsham, take note the rest of Hailsham and smarten up!!

The simple formula of a friendly welcome & advice on the selection of our first Gin to the great service & food made an impression that will ensure a return visit. Clearly the USP of Bucklers is the impressive range of Gins on offer. Being Gin lovers we chose to go off piste and let the owner make our first selection based on a few enquiries of our preferred style, which was easier than going through the 58 on offer !!

Have had coffee and cake here several times and decided to try their evening meals. The restaurant is open thurs/fri/sat eve. 6 of us went last night July 19th and had great food and time in a busy fun restaurant. The tapas was great as were the burgers. The staff are very helpful and friendly and more than happy to help when choosing which of the many gins to drink. Will definitely be back maybe when Tom Fitzpatrick is performing. Good selection and friendly. Willing to correct anything not quite right and good service. Very pleasant atmosphere and we would re visit.

Management and staff helpful, friendly and knowledgeable especially if you like your Gin as they have over 50 different brands. Alternatively you can relax with a fresh cup of coffee and cake. Hot food also available, so all round a great place.

Having been again this morning I find this to be a great place for breakfast. All 6 of us that had different things from the menu and were very happy with meals, good quality produce with good friendly service. Looking forward to going back and celebrating my birthday on Burger night Thursday!

We have just returned from the most amazing lunch here.

This has to be my favourite place ever!! I instantly felt at home as soon as I stepped foot through the door. I loved the stylish modern decor and the staff were really friendly and welcoming.

Had a great evening with friends the food was very tasty and the service was excellent but after two beers were told no cold beer, after two warm beers were told no beer we've run out. This is not the first time it has happened. Come on Bucklers sort it out.

Having met the charismatic owner Melvin at a local function, and sampled his delicious food, I recommended the “ladies that lunch” visit there for a birthday celebratory dinner especially as Melvin mentioned Bucklers had an extensive gin menu! Excitement all round! We went on a Friday evening full of anticipation at having our taste buds tantalisingly tempted by all the gins available.

Great evening with friends in relaxed atmosphere. This bar specialises in gins (I believe there are over 50). The menu describes the gin, their matched tonic or mixer and garnish. I tried 3 Sussex gins - each very different, but all lovely. The manager was really knowledgeable and not at all patronising - he spent plenty of time with us finding what we liked and recommended drinks to suit! The drinks were presented beautifully and we were even given some complimentary appetisers to accompany the drinks. I will be returning again and again - I’d like to try them all! Excellent menu options, very friendly team and nice location in the town- we had a panini lunch with chips and it was delicious - will be back to eat either in the day or evening.

The perfect venue to hire out for your special occasion. Bucklers opened especially for my sons 21st birthday on a Monday evening and everything was just PERFECT! Food was amazing as always, thanks to Ryan the chef, and Melvyn, Jonathan and Julie make a great team, nothing too much trouble. It was a surprise party for my son and he loved every minute.
