Simply, lovely restaurant, excellent food and service.

What a lovely place to go! All the staff so friendly, helpful and efficient. We had a Sunday roast which arrived piping hot and freshly cooked. Could not be faulted. We will centainly come again

My wife and I visited Callenders on a mid week evening for an early supper. The service was excellent from a friendly waiter, and the chef came and spoke to us at the table too (always a nice touch). Food was fantastic - in particular the special “duck with spiced red cabbage” was really tasty and accompanied by some nicely presented sides of fresh vegetables. Thank you for a great experience.

Had the Sunday roast. Choice of 4 meats or you can have a bit of each for a little extra. Food piping hot and very tasty. Excellent value for money and service was great. We will be back.

Wonderful food and excellent service in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Great for gluten free options. Fantastic value on Friday steak night - dessert and a small house wine/beer included in the price of your meal from the Grill menu. We love eating here, can’t wait to go again!

Visited with friends for Sunday lunch, had traditional Sunday roast ( all of us). Nicely cooked and presented and staff in attendance, a delightful bloke and gave first class service to our table. Would definitely go again, very good food and pleasant atmosphere. It was a lovely afternoon.

Late Sunday afternoon lunch for four. Very efficient and friendly waiter. Excellent value for all roast’s and puddings. We and our friends, who live locally, would happily recommend this restaurant.

On arrival I got this feeling that I was on the set of the newest series of Gordon Ramsay’s kitchen nightmares but put this to the back of my mind. I then was shown to our table where on walking over my shoes stuck to the sticky carpet and sat on one of the mish mash chairs in the woefully outdated restaurant area. I then browsed the menus where I discovered the most bizarre mix of dishes to choose from. I choose the duck rice bowl and my wife chose a macaroni and cheese with chicken and bacon. Our friends picked the same, duck and macaroni. The food arrived and I was given what looked like a out of date Chinese takeaway that had been reheated 3 times previously where the rice was dry and grainy whilst the duck was shrivelled and curled where on having the first mouthful I discovered it had no flavour at all. My friend’s wife who also had the duck experienced the same with the addition of a long hair entangled in the food, putting us both well of the thought of eating. My wife and my friend who were served the macaroni stated that their food was edible but was very greasy and oily. I raised the issues with the waitress who in the interests of fairness dealt with the issues raised very well, offering a replacement meal and removal of the dishes from the bill. After the previous experience I had lost my appetite but accepted some garlic bread offered. This arrived and was equally tasteless and bland. In summary this restaurant is in dire need of refurbishment and a complete revamp of its kitchen staff and menu.

We had the pleasure of dining at Callenders Restaurant on a Wednesday evening, and the experience was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with a friendly smile. The staff was attentive, friendly, and went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. The food was perfect. Each dish was fresh, cooked to perfection, and bursting with flavor. And the chips were amazing! The best I've had in any restaurant. It's clear that quality ingredients and expert preparation are a priority here and I haven't come across another restaurant locally that matches the quality that is served here. We were particularly impressed with how accommodating the restaurant was for our 11-month-old son. They provided a high chair and even prepared a mini portion of fries and some ice cream specifically for him under good will. This thoughtful gesture made our evening even more special. From start to finish, everything was perfect. We left very happy and will absolutely be returning. Thank you so much for a wonderful evening; I will be recommending to everyone I know!

We had some outside catering from Callenders for a special birthday. The customer service was excellent and the food was delicious. It was well laid out and exceeded our expectations. I would highly recommend Callenders whether you're eating in the restaurant or want something a little bit special.

We were looking for a restaurant halfway between Uckfield and Eastbourne and settled upon Callenders. We decided to try the Friday Evening Steak Night and we weren’t disappointed. 3 of us had the sirloin steak and one the venison and all of the meals were delicious. Staff were attentive, welcoming and polite. We will definitely be visiting again.

What a little gem of a restaurant phoned late in the day to get a booking for Saturday night they rang me straight back and I was in for 7 . The staff were fab the atmosphere was fab and the food was amazing myself husband n son had 3 courses how naughty but the food was sooo good thankyou so much we will be back soon

Beautiful meal, great service. We were seated at a table and a family came in with screaming kids running around our table and nothing was done about it. Spoilt the experience overall. Food was delicious although mashed potatoes should be fresh not dry and frozen

Showed up on a cycle to France at three. No problem. They were very happy to charge my bike battery while I ate. Chef/Owner (?) invented a half-and-half starter as I could not choose between two options. Very nice food. Home made chips and a properly cooked omelette. Could Not have been nicer. Very glad I took a punt on this place.

Visited Callenders restaurant last night. We phoned about half an hour before leaving home & were lucky enough to be able to book table as the restaurant was packed when we arrived at 7pm.We both had the marinated chicken. The food was excellent. A glass of wine & a dessert formed part of the "Meal Deal". Our waiter & waitress were very polite professional & attentive. On a cold April evening it was lovely & warm inside. Would thoroughly recommend for a great night out.

The menu left me with the need to go back and have another go. Second time there and both my partner and I were very happy with the food, wine and service. As it should be. Fresh. Local and honest. Be back there asap. Still have to to try the Tbone. Proper T&T

Specials on the chalk board offered a great variety of locally sourced products to supplement the menu. Spoiled for choice! An independent restaurant featuring fresh food prepared by a real chef, served with pride at prices that won't break the bank. Service staff always lovely and attentive without hanging over you. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

Lovely but dated interior. The food was disappointing, the mains were good value but desserts were over priced. I have been twice but wouldn’t go again, there are much better places to eat in the area

This restaurant was recommended by friend so thought we'd give it a go. No complaints with anything only observations. Firstly it didn't exactly feel like an occasion to dine out with people sitting on a nearby table wearing trackies, sweatshirts and quite a few children under 10. Now i'm not a snob but when I go out to a "fine dining" establishment but it's not quite what I was hoping for. We were made very welcome and the staff were very attentive. When the menu books were presented to us the 1st thing we noticed was how tired and worn they were. The offerings inside were numerous but the emphasis was on a lot of deep fried options. Starters weren't exactly exciting or challenging but having said that our Garlic mushrooms were tasty enough. Mains choices were better although most you could find on a reasonable Pub menu. I had the Venison Shank, my partner the Venison Steak. Again well presented and cooked nicely, great to have it served on piping hot plates as well. As stated above no complaints. My honest opinion is that its a few steps up from a cafe and a few steps down from a classy restaurant, yet with a bit of work it could lifted to be the latter. Desserts were lovely but nothing out of the ordinary. A specials board gave a few more choices for the three categories. Although having said all that above , the prices were extremely affordable for the fare provided. So perhaps this is not the aim of the owners to be a higher end business. In which case they have found their niche. Overall we enjoyed our trip to Callenders but may leave our return for a while longer yet

I went here with a friend who had been previously and she said she had a better experience than our visit! I could not fault the service from the lady waitress, friendly, attentive, and timings were perfect. We both had the chicken snitzel. My friends chicken was pink and not cooked inside. We had dessert, and her rice pudding was delicious, apparently. My Treacle tart was hard and dry. So much so that it got stuck in my throat and brought tears to my eyes. I had trouble speaking afterwards! The atmosphere is lacking, and it is hard to put your finger on why. No ambience. The toilets were also dirty. Not one for me, disappointing 😕

I joined a group of friends for a Christmas meal in Callenders. There was a good selection of food on the set Christmas Menu, and each dish was both filling and delicious. Excellent service all evening.

All the food here's home cooked and of excellent quality. The fixed price lunch menu is great value and there is a good range of choices. The specials are also excellent. Service is attentive and friendly.

After years of not being at home, I went to Callenders again. I tell people I meet how great this chef is. Today, I was at home with my wife and we walked to Callenders and it was great. I had time to talk to my wife, the staff were attentive, the atmosphere is how I remembered, and, the most important point, is that the food was great! My fillet steak perfect... as I remembered. The triple chocolate cheesecake is fantastic. Not oversweet so totally enjoyable as an ending to a meal.

I ordered a takeaway from here to be delivered as I had heard great reviews. I am so impressed, the food arrived piping hot and in a very good time. It was the most delicious food and fantastic value for money. The lady on the phone was extremely friendly and helpful. I will definitely be eating here again, 100%. Very highly recommend!

We’ve just been to Callenders for the 3 course Xmas menu……amazing value at £29.95 a head. Especially when you’re completely confident in the freshness of the ingredients used. We had a range of dishes between the 11 of us, all which were enjoyed immensely, one of our party had the Sword fish which she said was absolutely superb. I thoroughly enjoyed my Tortillas, Turkey and Pear crumble (but I was very jealous of my friends soup which also looked amazing)! I don’t think there was a negative word said from any of us and the service was impeccable, as always. We like to come here with family and friends when we can and will always recommend it here. On a separate occasion we had our (extremely well-behaved) two year old grandson with us and the interaction from the staff was excellent, and made us feel very relaxed and welcome. Well done on creating such a fabulous restaurant.

Can’t comment on the food as we didn’t have any. My husband booked us a table for my birthday a week in advance. When we arrived they had a record of our booking but there wasn’t a table for us. The staff offered to bring out a table for us but the only place it could be put was in front of the bar in the way of staff coming to & from the kitchen. Not happy but went elsewhere & had a lovely meal. Won’t book again.

Enjoyed the food great service, but I felt it was over priced for what you get. Disappointed that we had we couldn’t have the Xmas menu as it had to be pre-booked, I feel as it’s the festive season it should be available without pre-booked.

Callenders is a great restaurant with excellent seasonal food cooked on site. One of my favourite venues and have regularly meet up with friends there for a number of years.

Very poor quality of food, burned burgers, hard chips, steaks still fridge cold on inside, went there for my daughters birthday, they said it was a good place to eat, I'd disagree, my daughter said its not normally that bad. And no latte either, my son in law spent alot of money in there.

This was our first time at Callenders, meeting with friends who are regulars there and we will definitely be back! Food was lovely and cooked very well (big portions!) The 2 members of staff who were serving our table were amazing - very polite and friendly which can be a rarity nowadays.

Unfortunately it was a very wet and miserable night so the restaurant was very quiet which was a shame for the owners as the food was excellent. Also the staff were very welcoming, friendly and efficient. Good menu with a nice selection of dishes. Freshly cooked, good quality ingredients.

Fabulous eating place in Hailsham, a little gem.... service great and very pleasant.... a little wait for food to be served but thats due to it being cooked fresh so we really did not mind. Food was delicious.... overall a good reasonably priced place to eat....

We enjoyed an excellent lunch here on Saturday, a fixed price menu and à la carte was available. Everything was home cooked, even the bread, and Everything we had was excellent. Service was attentive and friendly.

I have been going here for over 3 years now, and we are still impressed with the food and service every time. Staff are always so pleasant and attentive and are genuinely want you to be happy and comfortable. Two of you can quite easily have have a meal , desert, and drinkies for £40 especially on a Friday. A must try, in my opinion.
