Favourite of ours best in polegate.

We ordered at 8.10 and we got the food at 9.45.the chips were soggy and limp and the fish batter was also soggy dark brown and tasteless.the fish itself tasted days old.Will NOT be going back there.

I go to this shop regularly, the best around, always spotless clean.

Really disappointing. Very abrupt service from the man at the till. My cod and chips seemed to be made at the back of the shop not on view as is usual in fish n chip shops. As for the chips - really soggy thin things that looked as if they’d been reheated in poor quality oil. The fish was passable. One to avoid in future.

I’m feeling disappointed with my chips tonight, very poor quality, not the usual standard I expect from Calamar. I spent £17.50 and just feel fed up, can it be that hard to cook some nice chips, very small chips, dried up and discoloured! You were my favourite chip shop locally but not anymore, please improve, fish and chips is a real treat for my family!

Trash, rip-off prices and under portioned. Just go elsehwhere or these places will just keep ripping us off with sub-par, low grade food and shoddy service at ourageous prices.

I made the silly mistake of ordering a just-eat, which I do not usually do in general; I was WHF, hungry, fancied a treat, and figured I had not been here in a while (It used to be my go-to chippy a few years back but went badly downhill on a whole bunch of levels). Anyway, it cost me £15 for a pie £4.40), small sausage £3), large chips £5.20), and curry sauce £2.40) + delivery/service fee. It was a cheeky Tuesday order, so once the discount was knocked off, I got much of the delivery for free. See the pictures, and please note that this is before I ate any of it. So the prices are generally what you would see in a rip-off town like Eastbourne, so I can't complain about that. On the menu, it says Small Sausages (note plural and there is no option for a plain jumbo sausage; there is an option for a jumbo battered, which is double the size, and battered, and only 50p more than the small sausages), so I figured, okay maybe it was two sausages, sometimes another chip shop I go to does this, so I was thinking, okay, surely it cannot be just one sausage for that price. Yes, it was one small sausage, which is an absolute rip-off. Then, curry sauce, okay, again, is generally over-priced rubbish, we all get this, but it's okay when you get a decent enough amount to drown your chips in or dip your midget sausage in, and of course if you aint paid too much; well, I paid £2.40 for a pot that is half the size of all the other places that I have ever had any extras like curry, peas, gravy from. It wasn't even filled to the top, so it was another rip-off and it was barely warm, so had to put it in the microwave too and finish the job for them. The pie, well, not a bad price really for a delivery price pie; however, it was, like most pies these days from most chip shops, a horrible affair, you know, the one, rock hard on top, sweaty and soggy on the bottom, cos, of course, it had had a momentary love affair with a microwave and had obviously kept its hat on, so mediocre at best, could have done with some softening agent for the lid or a pneumatic drill. The chips—well, okay. They were not great, not terrible, and portion-wise, these would have been classed as a regular portion of old-school chips, but by modern 'give them less for more' standards, they could have been classed as a large portion, in the minds of con artists and the deluded at least. Well, I am old school, and this was not a large portion, not in any sense in any world apart from one inhabited by people who are on average no more than 1ft high. It was barely a regular portion, and for £5.20, it was just another big rip-off. Plus, there were far too many shards in there. I do not remember requesting a packet of salt and vinegar crisps to be mixed into my chips. I do not think there is anything particularly outstanding about this crew; as in they are no better nor worse in many ways than other places. They are as sub-par, keen to con and rip off folks like most food places these days, especially chip shops, and kebab shops, who have somehow managed to convince a whole generation or two of people that cow pats and dog poos mixed with horse dung and turned in to burgers and kebabs are the real thing, and that chips that are old and contain 50% shards are acceptable and that cheap nasty food is worth paying for. And even worse, in some cases, a lot of owners these days believe you should not complain about the low-grade half-assed service they provide, despite you paying through the nose for their crap and getting shortchanged on portions. You see some of the responses from owners to places like JE, and some are just outrageous. It's not that this crew has done this, to me at least. Overpriced rubbish and this crew are happy to rob you and serve you crappy food, in tiny portions, with no love for the grub they serve nor for their customers; those folks who are in love with them can keep buying their trash, I however, will not be going back and will tell everyone I know what a load of tosh it is.

Tbf not a bad little fish and chips outlet. Not to bad a price. Friendly family service. Not had a bad takeaway yet. Would recommend.

Great tasting fish and chips and excellent service

This used to be one of the better fish and chip takeaway. The chips I bought there recently were dreadful. They had a strange taste like the fat/lard used years ago. Calamari have obviously changed the oil/fat they cook chips in. It's inferior and left a nasty taste in our mouths & throat. They are expensive too £3 & £4 a portion

We've got our fish and chips from here many times - great fish and chips, always cooked to order, although the chips could be more cooked for my liking, they always seems a little undercooked! But this doesn't put us off. The fish is great and the place is always so clean! We walk past when it is closed and they are always there cleaning it - great to see.

I asked for a cod an got some sort of flat fish. A hell lot of bones an over cooked . Worst fish an chips I have ever had I'd not Evan feed it to a rat its that bad . My advice go to the other fish chip shop down near one stop . You will not be disappointed

bossman who works in here is great, the food is so nice. i remember one winters evening about 2 years ago, we ordered some chips and the guy gave us these chip boxes instead of wrapping so we didnt burn our hands whilst eating them. what a nice and considerate guy. good prices too!

Ordered from here so many times and never had a problem. The first time I have had items missing from my order when delivered and basically got called a liar, as they refused to believe it was possible, refused to sort it out. Very disappointed and will not order from there again. They have just lost a customer that would have and did spend £40+ A fortnight.

My partner brought me home a steak and kidney pie and a portion of chips. What a ruddy joke, once upon a time you would get a proper bag of really nice cooked chips, this time I got a small open bag of chips, very dry horrible rubbish posing as chips, the pie was gastly, it was dry, hard to cut, no gravy in the pie just not worth it, I threw the hole lot in the bin. I always held this takeaway in high regards once, I will definitely not get anything from there ever again.

Visited this fish shop as I am new to the area. What can I say excellent fish and chips. No grease, cooked to order, really tasty, best I've eaten for a long time. I'll be back again & again.

I think the old man is so rude I drived over from Hailsham the chip shop says on the website 9.30 its closes i was their at 9.15 and he told me to get out very rude he treats his customers with no respect

I would have scored 0 star's if it would let me after 10 minutes looking for the place it was closed, when on advice on phone it clearly stated it been open now it's really annoying because we had planned this trip to eat on our way football match USELESS.

Portion size was appalling and chips came in a greasy paper bag. The fish was alright, fresh, but quite bland, as with the chips that were also soggy. Very overpriced for what you get. Would not recommend.

This used to be a very good chip shop but has sadly gone down hill fast. Since signing up to just eat they don't be able to cope with the volume of orders and have neglected their regular customers. The last time I tried to purchase a meal in person I had to queue for over fifteen minutes while the just eat drivers just walked past everyone (who where social distancing ) to collected their next delivery while the queue got longer it seemed that as long as the just eat orders went out on time nothing else mattered! So in the end I gave up and went to KFC in Hailsham where I was served straight away no problem, I have also heard of the same experience from other people. So this Saturday we decided to give them another try but ordered through just eat to avoid the previous problems of being ignored. What a big mistake we did manage to get an order delivered but part of the order was missing and so we had to divide the food we had between more people which meant that people who had paid for food had smaller portions so that we could share what we did get between everybody. I will not be using this establishment ever again and would advise other people to go elsewhere. They can't even get a just eat order correct and this seems to be there main priority now !

We are fortunate in this area to have some exceptional fish and chip shops. Got to say tho this one is the best. Best haddock and chips I've had for ages.

We have taken advantage of their delivery service several times. The meal always arrives within minutes of the predicted time, piping hot generous portions of expertly cooked fish and chips. I use the word 'expertly' as properly cooked fish and chips is something of an art. Batter just right, not soggy, and fish is delicious in large succulent flakes, chips freshly fried and not stored on the hot shelf. What more do you need? Top marks all round.

This place is the best around. I'm 53 and have not had better anywhere ever. I will always go here or have delivered as it's so quick and hot. Hope one day they can get the shop next door to have a eat in place aswell. 5 star plus

Very nice fish, with large portions. My Sons medium cod was openned & served 1st, my partner thought it was my large portion, she was quite shocked when next cod came out of wrapping, it was too big for our normal round plates.

Ordered for delivery. They arrived a little later than the initial time estimation but still wasn't too long to wait. Good sized portions and reasonably priced. Quality of fish and chips was good and there wasn't an abundance of grease like you get with some chippies. Would order from here again.

Have been a regular user of Calamar for about 3 years now, having previously been a customer " elsewhere", but changed following regular issues with incorrect orders, (probably to do with some of the staff being more interested in chatting amongst themselves than providing a service) Can honestly say that Calamar has been consistently excellent, not only in the quality and quantity of the food, but particularly the standard of service which is fast and professional at all times.

Picked up from here yesterday, yet again. This is the fish and chip shop we use for Polegate, even if I do end up getting the pie. Staff very polite, reasonable price and freshly cooked so be prepared to wait a few minutes. Spot on.

Good fish without skin on, that the small kid loves, used to go to another fish shop but his one is better value for money and better fish. The last time I went they had a new older gentleman on the till who managed to rung up £160k for my fish and chips but have laughed it off since. Best keep the older bloke away from the tills guys! ;) but will return.

This place has become our preferred option over the years. Turnaround service is quick, the place is spotless and never had a bad meal to date. Whoever serves you is always very polite and friendly. Will keep on using them for a long time.

Superb fish and chips BUT something is happening lately causing it to go downhill. Firstly they disappeared from JustEat which we used to use all the time and today their credit card machine is apparently not working. Such a shame as they are by far the best fish and chips in the Polegate area but they have lost around £100 in custom from us alone in the last few months. I hope they get sorted out and back to the way they were.

very busy always a good sign! freshly cooked don't mind the waiting as they are hot when you get them home.

Locales para nosotros, darnos un capricho y parientes de pescado, patatas fritas y guisantes blandos cada mes o así. Las patatas fritas son super fresco y grasiento. Absolutamente no manchas de aceite en el plato o embalaje. Las raciones son enormes, compartimos dos peces grandes, una chips grandes y pequeños fragmentos entre cuatro de nosotros (todos adultos) y dos guisantes blandos. Preciosa tienda limpia, me recuerda como un quirófano. . . . En el buen sentido! Ah, sí, el personal agradable también!
