Cafe Spice in Newcastle upon Tyne

Ordered at 6.30pm and did not arrive we waited until 9.30 after ringing twice and being lied to and told it was out for delivery when it wasn’t!! In the end we asked for a refund . This is the 3rd time this had happened. I will not be ordering again.

No idea how this place got high reviews. Notice how cafe spice IGNORE negative and truthful reviews, and which kind of people leave positive and false reviews... £2 quality food at £10 prices. Water tasting rice, low quality sauces and awful quality meats. They made my fiance and I wait for an hour and a half in the cold while telling us our delivery was "five minutes away" repeatedly, when we called every 30 minutes after the ETA to ask about our order. Takes about 7 calls to actually get through to them as they can't be bothered to answer the phone. When they finally answered they thought it was acceptable to yell at my partner, and then give me the same nonsense when I took over the call. Take my advice and never go here or order from here. There is no worse Indian place in Newcastle. Absolute joke of a place, run by absolute jokers. If you like disappointment, rudeness, being repeatedly lied to, terrible food, and stomach pains, you'll love it here. The delivery driver was lovely as he was NOT working for cafe spice if you get my drift... Otherwise, pathetic place, with pathetic food and pathetic staff.

Absolutely VILE! Ordered food for my children and the chicken is so dried out and inedible…. it’s as if it’s been recooked several times and the same with the peas. Can’t believe they had the audacity to send this out. Clearly reheating old food. Won’t be giving my children it as it looks like it will make them sick!!! absolute WASTE of money! UPDATE 25.12.24: (original review from some seven years ago still stands). A Christmas Day curry! A definite first for me and maybe the first time the place has been open on the date also? I visit somewhat infrequently still, maybe once or twice a year. Today I was the lone eater having rocked up at 17.00 when the doors flung open. I took my chance expecting takeaway only, but a sit-in was all good! It's still cool. Friendly service, good food, cold beer, a nice coffee and it's still fairly priced. Outstanding food! Having walked past the place a trillion times, I wasn't sure what to expect on my first visit. It's not perhaps the trendiest of curry houses, however the menu is spot on and the quality is supreme. Kingfisher is on draught and Cobra bottled, beer wise. No issues with the service or price, and they do take out too. There's plenty of room after a fairly recent extension, so rock up and try the place.

UPDATE NOV 2024: The curries are delicious again - lots of flavour. The rice isn't as good as it used to be (less vegetables in the vegetable pilau rice) but overall very good (5/5) UPDATE NOV 2023: No longer as good as it was. Cost cutting must have reduced the quality of the food. Absolutely delicious food, lovely staff, cute place. The menu had very helpful descriptions for people like me who shy away from Indian food because it may be too spicy. Well worth a visit.

La profundidad de los sabores y quizás lo más importante, la atención del personal a los detalles me han devuelto la fe en los restaurantes indios que por lo demás han sido marrones e inidentificables. Cannot fault the food we got from this place, we ordered on a Saturday night when we were expecting it to be busy so delivery to be about an hour and it was here within 30 minutes of ordering. Super quick service and the food was perfect, piping hot food for a takeaway is a rarity but both curries and the rice was steaming hot so cannot fault and the curry itself is one of the best if not the best curry I’ve had! Cannot recommend this place enough, I never normally leave reviews but this place deserves credit for how good our food was last night! 10/10 definitely be back soon!

I was out with my wife on Saturday night and we decided at the last minute to try get a curry, we tried one elsewhere ill not name the place but trust me i won't ever set foot in there again, filthy cold and just uninviting! So we took the long walk to Cafe Spice and it was more than worth it, the lads were more than happy to seat us even though it was after 10pm, lovely and accommodating! Food was excellent, hot and very tasty absolutely no faults at all! Thank you so much lads for allowing us in late Saturday night and being so professional and curtious, your food and service is second to none. New reveiw, 25/09/2024 delivery. Wow. Absolutly lovely, everything was cook perfect! Ive had a pretty bad day today but the food has put a smile on my face. Thank you Gary.

He estado usando este restaurante durante años, pero nunca volveré al lugar de nuevo. Esperé aproximadamente 3 horas para un gran pedido de comida, ya que teníamos familia. Los llamó tres veces y obtuvo diferentes excusas. Traté de decirme que había puesto mi propio número de puerta mal en la entrega y dijo que debido a esto había sido entregado en otra dirección en la misma calle. Les dijimos que sabíamos que la persona había sido entregada, e iríamos a verlos, volvieron a rastrearlos y nos dijeron que no necesitamos hacer que hicieran el pedido nuevamente por nosotros. La persona a la que se la entregaron dijo que les dijo que no era su pedido, en lugar de llamarnos desestimaron su comentario y le dejaron la comida. La comida que realmente le entregaron fue una sola comida, ni siquiera nuestro pedido. Hablamos con ellos por teléfono de nuevo sobre esto, para comprobar que realmente estaban tratando con la orden correcta, se vuelven groseros y discutidores sobre la situación. Al fondo alguien decía que si no estábamos contentos de ir a otro lugar, ya habíamos pagado por un gran pedido a través de la aplicación y esperamos horas. Cuando finalmente llegó el alimento de reemplazo parecía de un nivel más bajo al que teníamos en el pasado, bajo en sabor y calidad. Muy decepcionado, con algunos elementos que faltan también. En general una experiencia terrible, tanto el servicio como la comida.

Good wasn’t hot more just warm chips where soggy just not enjoyable

Honestly my favourite take away. Fresh, spicy and big portions and the bread is next level always fresh and fluffy. I love it and thank you so much for the gorgeous food I always have!

Absolutely gorgeous meal last night, everything was super fresh. Minhaj was great, very attentive and lovely to chat to. Balti was perfect, Garlic naan was so soft. We have been into the restaurant a few times and used to order take away every weekend. We did get 1 bad takeaway so it's been almost a year since we last ordered as we were totally put off. So pleased to see the standard is back up again.

We ordered a good hour and half before the food arrived. He had contacted Cafe Spice twice via telephone and to find out where our order was. We were told it was already out for delivery. There had been no updates from Just Eat. The food arrived half an hour later and the food was cold. We contacted Cafe Spice who were not exactly very helpful. They kept saying that they had been busy all night!! Oh and just eat only partially refunded as a credit so cold food and no proper compo either

Me and my husband came tonight celebrating our anniversary we had a starter and mains which were beautiful. The one thing that let you down are your desserts myvhusband ordered cheesecake it hadn't defrosted properly so was hard as rock! I ordered a mango icecream it was awful no taste of mango whatsoever u actually left it!

If I could leave a 6 star review I would ⭐. This has to be one the nicest Indians I have had in a long long time, from the service from Minhaj and his waiting staff, to the quality and price of the meal. Unbelievable, I won't only be back again, I'll be back weekly for a long time.

Food is amazing, so fresh and tasty. Staff are really friendly and understanding. Last week when ordering they accidentally missed an item from my order - mistakes happen! But the staff were amazing and apologetic and sent it out right away with extras. Wouldn’t get that service from most places these days. Thank you cafe spice :)

The food was, as always, excellent. There was a slight mix-up with the order, but the restaurant noticed very quickly and rectified it by making an extra delivery with the one missing item without me having to do anything. Here right now with my brother… Hussain has made us feel at home as if we were in India itself! Popadoms got us started with a pickle tray… and two creamy pints of Kingfisher (on draft)… we asked for extra lime pickle and unlike other restaurants, nothing was too much for Hussain… The chef had even made his own special coriander and chilli pickle… taste explosion… faultless! If there is something that makes this place utterly unique is the lamb chop starter… it really is unparalleled… Had chicken balti, mushroom rice and plain naan… I would rate this place as 10/10 Or for a more in depth rating 98/100… The 2 points that are dropped is not from short comings… only that person spice level and preference is very personal and can’t be accounted for with everyone… Thank Hussain and well done Spice Cafe

First time we visited cafe spice as a family get together, the restaurant is very nice with good service. The tables are too small for the amount of plates they bring out, the starters were average and nothing to write home about, the mains were very poor, a few of us had chicken tikka masala and to be brutally honest Iceland does a much better frozen curry. The nan breads were nice though. Sadly we wont be going back there again and after spending nearly £200 we were all very disappointed. Vincenzos from now on

Visited Monday 18/03/2024. Very good tasty food, though service a little slow and vague at times. The coffee wasn't very nice so we left most of it.

I didn’t take the decision to leave this review lightly, as one thing I must say about Café Spice is the food is outstanding, however, after Saturday’s episode – we won’t be back. My family has ordered here more or less every week for around 6 years. The food is ALWAYS very good but last year, we started receiving cold orders and frequent orders with items missing. Of course, we complained and at one point were basically told that they were too busy to send out the missing items. My mother wasn’t impressed and quite rightly so. We paid for food that we never got and were made to feel like our loyalty and custom didn’t matter – we were just brushed aside. Eventually it was rectified, and both sides were happy. We received a discounted order and an apology, and the restaurant retained our business. Saturday gone, the same thing again – missing salad, mint sauce, and onion salad. I called the restaurant and was told the items would be sent out straight away. After almost 25 minutes of waiting and now with cold food we originally received (only 4 starters I might add – not a huge banquet), I called back. Eventually, the manager came to the phone and yet again basically told me that they were very busy, and it was likely the items wouldn’t be sent. I tried to explain to him how this was NOT acceptable! We’ve paid good money for our food and for it to be delivered, and we expect to get what we paid for. The restaurant/take away being busy is not our problem. I was well within my rights to state this, as it was the truth, and I also asked why someone else told me it was being sent straight out (this resulted in an argument on their side of the phone that played down the phone to me). He clearly didn’t like the fact I was calling into question his customer service and said “I don’t need to listen to this” and he hung up on me. I called back only to be hung up on again and then told my mother to call. Prices have increased, the cost of living has increased yet we still keep back money to SPEND at YOUR business and when you don’t fulfil the order, that’s the attitude we get. My mother called and he recognised her voice. Within 20-minutes we had a complete new order and after an hour – the other items that were supposedly “being sent straight out” also turned up. Clearly no communication. So how can 2 people from the same house get such complete opposite levels of customer service? We don’t understand. My final nail in the coffin for Café Spice is that the manager said he would call my mother this week to discuss what went wrong. It’s now Saturday – 7 days after the fact and no phone call. That tells us everything we need to know. We’ve been loyal customers for a very long time but after the disrespect I received on the phone, in contrast to how my mother was spoken to, we will not be ordering here again. As I said, the food is very good, I can’t say anything bad about that, but when the owner of a business tells you they are too busy to send what you have paid for, that is not acceptable, neither is being rudely hung up on. I am self-employed, I run my own business, and I would never hang up on a client/customer. In short, when they are busy and stress is rising, the customer service is terrible and given the cost of things, I’ll be taking my money somewhere else because loyalty clearly means nothing with Café Spice. Such a shame as we love the food, but good food doesn’t make up for terrible service. The attitude the manager had with me in comparison to my mother was like night and day – I meant nothing because he obviously didn’t recognise the address or my voice, but my mother meant everything because he knew her voice. Really disappointing. I am an influencer and have told many, many people to dine here when they are in Newcastle but that will not be happening now either – take better care of your customers – you’ve lost a lot with us.

APPALLING TAKEAWAY SERVICE Do not order takeaway from Cafe Spice. We ordered takeaway food for delivery and Cafe Spice got the order wrong and when my daugther rang them the "manager" was rude saying do you know how busy we are. When the missing food didnt arrive for the second time we phoned again and the "manager" just hung up. My daughter travels the world and writes for travel websites and magazines including food quality and customer service. She is well qualified to comment on food quality, service and staff behaviour.She has friends who are celebrity chefs and one said " weve just about got the quality of food right in the UK but sadly customer service lets us down" Cafe Spice proved his point last Saturday evening. The owner promised to call back within two days to speak to my wife. She is still waiting for his call. We wont be ordering food from Cafe Spice again and will be taking our business elsewhere. AVOID ORDERING TAKEAWAY From Cafe Spice as the service is extremely poor.

Amazing service from Hussain. Very well looked after. Made to feel like royalty. Food was perfectly balanced. Hot dishes just right.. They can accommodate if you want your face melted but we went with the recommend heat. Personally I recommend the lamb chop starter, it was perfect, and the balti as a main.. Pints of ice cold kingfisher on draught was the real boon... Much better than Cobra thank Hussain

This place is a usual place for me and my family to go to at the weekend. the food is really good but there's one thing that is not the best it takes a while to get your food. I recommend here if you like spicy food here is the best place they have one item on the menu that says eat if you dare it is one of the spiciest item on the menu

Why not just tell us you cant deliver on time?? You take the order, so we expect the food delivered as you have stated! I have no issues waiting for food at a reasonable amount of delivery time, but its a p$$ take when i have to chase you. Instead, all you have dome is pi$$ people off by not telling them you are running late by 1 hour. It's just basic stuff that's letting you down. Why not have a think about your coms to customers. Why not just state something realistic for delivery time? Why not call your customer to tell them that cant delivery food on time? You running late has literally nothing to do with me and just cant be the excuse after I have placed an order that stated 40mins. More than happy to discuss this with you, but I bet 1000000% you will not call me to discuss.

My delivery was ordered for 7.30 prompt didn't arrive until 7.50, the grease had seeped into the food so whent in the bin, the so called manager I spoke to was very patronising & argumentative with a stinking attitude, this place once had a good reputation but now unfortunately its gone & should be forgotten, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!

I don’t indeed the reviews. I thought this place was terrible. We tried take away twice. First time they got the order wrong. The naan was also dry. Gave it another try. Order was correct. Chicken was super dry and chewy, naan was dry and over cooked. I had a stomach ache all night. It was just terrible. We won’t be trying it again.

Food was delivered eventually. Was suspecting was not turning up due to delays. But here so happy. Tastes very good. If only informed of expected time would be 5stars allround.

Sorry but my whole order was cold despite very short distance. The chicken was very tough and inedible. The naan bread was hard on one side but uncooked on the other side. I was unable to reheat it and just unable to eat any of it. Very disappointing.

What a fantastic evening at the Cafe Spice, 16 of us went there on Saturday night to celebrate Mark’s birthday and what a wonderful experience the owner Raf and his entire team gave us. The best menu and food ever with fantastic service from all of the staff, everyone enjoyed themselves and had a fantastic time. Thanks Raf
