Cafe Revive at Marks and Spencer in Worthing

The founder(s) of Marks & Spencer would turn in their grave(s) should they ever re-visit the Worthing store & café. Once the benchmark of quality & value with a dose of smugness the now ye olde British brand once aimed at a very specific now dying demographic has become tired & tacky. The clothes are average & the food becoming too expensive when others do it better. If there was a competition for the most disgusting toilets Worthing would get the first prize. One of the two men's cubicles has been out of service for months, a dripping tap in one of the disabled booths remained dripping for almost a year & of course as for the the very idea of a lift working? - don't be so silly. The café is pleasant enough providing you get there early before it gets busy & untidy with tables left uncleared. Should there be more than 3 people waiting to be served then take a book & a portable seat with you as the wait will be long, but you can be entertained in the meantime by observing how the staff serving food & drink take their time, chat merrily to each other and/or exchange long-winded pleasantries with customers & are brilliant at avoiding any eye contact with customers. M & S has had its day especially at Worthing.

Awful place. Cramped, not very clean, service was glacially slow just for two coffees, and the coffee was terrible. NEVER going back there again. Maybe have more than one coffee machine since so many people are in for a quick snack? And it wasn't cheap - over £9 for two simple coffees and a slice of cake.

Something terrible has happened to this cafe. I visited today with my granddaughter. We queued for about 20 mins and to be honest I wish I’d just left rather than wait. The place was filthy. The floor was covered in food, the ‘clean’ cutlery was dirty, someone had left their tray with half eaten food in front of the cutlery section so you had to reach over to pick it up. There were no serviettes. The food took ages to arrive and when I asked the staff member, he hardly acknowledged me. I watched a staff member fill up the water dispenser with jugs of tap water and the jug was disgustingly dirty. When the food did arrive it wasn’t very nice. Even the cheese scone was dry and hardly had any cheese. My granddaughter enjoyed the ‘Colin the Caterpillar frappe’.

Floor and window sills were disgusting, covered in old food, obviously hadn't been cleaned in some time. Staff unhelpful and disinterested. No saucers. Cake was nice

Today i visited the cafe for afternoon tea with my friend and was served by very friendly helpful staff. It was quite busy and we took a seat in the middle of the room hoping to get a seat near the window for the best view of Worthing Pier and the sea. Changing seats i left my handbag on a chair and it was quite a long time until i realised it was missing. Panicked i asked staff and was very relieved and very grateful to learn a member of the staff had found it. A big THANK YOU.

M&S cafe is a favourite of mine. Friendly staff, great coffee and a good variety of sandwiches, cakes etc. It is very popular and always busy and staff do their best to clear and disinfect tables even when short staffed due to sickness.

I meet a friend for coffee once a week in this cafe and also my partner & I sometimes have lunch or a coffee in here. However in the last 6 months the standard of cleanliness and speed of service has deteriorated. There just aren’t enough staff, normally only one person serving the drinks and food orders which results in a long queue backing up. The tables aren’t cleared regularly so lots of trays left with dirty cups and plates etc and always food and dirty napkins on the floor. I felt like I wanted to clear all the tables myself. My last visit on Thursday, I waited 15 to 20 mins in the queue to then be told it would be a 20 min wait for food?! I asked why this was as no one had ordered hot food in front of me but the man serving didn’t know why. There was also no water in the water dispenser. Is there anyone actually managing this cafe as if not prepared to staff it adequately it shouldn’t be open.

last time we give this cafe benefit of the doubt re lack of staff and long waiting times . really poor management and powers that be need to employ more staff

Clean busy but toasted sandwich was good ,they reminded me about track and trace form ,friendly staff no complaints if you can get a window table great view of sea/beach ....

I have no complaints about food and drinks, but I was eating and drinking for about 45 mins and their was no one clearing or wiping down the tables, customers were having to clear their own tables, but no wiping down was done until I was about to leave. This is not good enough for marks.

Enjoyed a lovely break following my shopping in store. Managed to get a window table and watch some filming take place outside The Lido...? For advert . Wonderful Worthing Staff friendly ,good measures in place.

Stopped by for a quick cuppa and a sandwich on a rainy day. Service was incredibly slow at the counter, many people were having their hot food brought out before they had even found a table due to waiting for hot drinks. Ordered a soup, and went to select some cutlery. It was *filthy*! Having rejected 5 spoons for having dried food stuck to them, I informed a waitress this was unacceptable. She didn't say anything ( I think too young to know how to respond) and I continued trying to find a clean spoon in the tray. This was enough to put me off eating entirely, and I will certainly not be eating at this cafe again. Genuinely made my stomach turn. Not a good look, M&S.

The position of the cafe here, on the first floor and if you get a window seat is wonderful. One gets a fantastic view of the sea. The choice of drinks and food is good. It covers vegetarian and vegans too. However, it’s just a bit slow when one queues for food which is a bit frustrating. Otherwise a very pleasant cafe.

Come here for a weekend treat. Great if you can get a seat by the window, the jackets are lovely with full flavoured side salad. Lots of choices, great lunch.

We were passing through and noticed straight away that at last both counters were open with a very friendly and efficient manager serving called Anna. Set a real example to other staff. Hard working, and as well as serving in a very efficient manner, also cleared away tables, cleaned tables in between customers. Wow, a manager doing that is very credible.Will now be back more frequently. So much more improved now.

I love Marks and Spencer’s and their cafes but they need a few more team members to keep on top of the tables and keep the queues down. That said, it was quieter today and we had a lovely lunch including toasties, wraps, cake and coffee, all nicely presented and tasty. Friendly team in Worthing store, perfect central location and close to the beach. Has amazing views of the sea from the window tables but the windows need a clean thanks to the resident seagulls!

Long queues and tables either full or cups/plates not cleared. Nothing wrong with the coffee but no biscuit with it this time. The biscuits were there at the till to be added but not for us.Short staffed it appeared. It’s a shame as it has a lot of potential and not as organised as Holmbush.There is a lot of choice in Worthing and I think they need to raise their game.

Quickly nipped in for a bite while shopping at 13:00 sold out of most items in the hot food section, was busy and myself and partners daughter found a table, my partner had to keep coming back and forth asking us what we wanted because they'd "ran out of that as well" No fillings for baked potatoes, no other hot meals. So we opted for 3 ham and cheese toasties. About 20 minutes wait they eventually came. Heating up a sandwich? 20 minutes. if we hadnt already paid and the queue wasnt a mile long we'd have left. The toastie was ok, but its expensive for what it is. Probably wouldnt go back

Its ok for a coffee but the queuing system is chaotic and lengthy even for a drink! the food choice isn't great, to be honest there are far better cafes in worthing with friendlier staff, Debenhams being one of them! As for the toilets on a Monday morning at 9.10am they were absolutely filthy and obviously hadn't been cleaned since Sunday! Not good enough at all.

Came here when on a visit to the front for a walk. Quick cuppa and a bacon roll. Good quality and quick to serve. You are a bit squeezed in but most people don't plan to stay long so not really a problem.

We came here for a quick pit stop and there were only paper cups and plates due to the dishwasher being broken. They should have given a discount as a gesture of goodwill at least. Limited choice of cakes left. Not great and with plenty of choice in town, this cafe really needs to up its game now.

We made a special point to come to this cafeteria for a snack around lunchtime on Sunday recently. I was dismayed by the patient line of hungry and thirsty customers waiting in the queue to be served.

I am so disappointed with the M&S; cafe. They used to be so good and now they are presumably cutting costs and it really has gone down hill! I am particularly reviewing from a Gluten Free perspective and the occasion was a cup of tea and cake in the afternoon.The staff are always limited to 2 or 3 so despite the fact that you don't get any real service you always have to queue for it. There is a very limited choice for G.F customers even though in their food dept they have some good stuff. The photos shows the only choice of cakes. I chose a lemon cake which tasted good and had a nice lot of lemon curd and pistachios in it as well as the cake being light and good texture as it was made with rice-flour. However, it is packed in a cardboard sleeve with cellophane around it so when you get it pealed open icing and cake stick to the sides of the box and all over the cellophane! Then of course there is no plate offered so it has to be eaten off the sticky cardboard, very messy!! M&S;'s little touch of putting a biscuit in your saucer without asking whether you want it or not is also not a good idea for a G.F person. In the past I would have been reluctant to complain about this great green and gold edifice of Britain but we all know they are struggling so I reckon they need to consider ways of pleasing their old faithful customers that reaches beyond jumpers and underwear!!

Nice place to sit but my breakfast was not hot when I received it and very impersonal service. Expected better.

Had coffee and Coffee and Walnut cake in here with a friend. The cake looked lovely but was very heavy and wet tasting. Coffee was luke warm. Tables not cleared very quickly. Although the staff were friendly.

Estaba muy contento con un miembro del personal que fue a conseguir otra sin gluten de trigo/sandwich gratis de la sala de comida abajo como café había acabado. Ella era muy complaciente y servicial con nosotros. Es una lástima que la selección era tan malo, tener un trigo sin gluten, lactosa alergia. Nos pareció que no podía haber una tarta. No vender trigo y gluten pero no lácteos gratis! !

Te dan una buena taza de café recién hecho, no importa cómo usted puede elegir. La comida era muy limitada, pero fresca. Muy ruidoso en horas pico.

Cambiaron a Worthing desde el norte y estaba encantado de encontrar una marca y café spencer tan cerca del mar y la ciudad. Delicioso café lleno, buen café y una buena selección de pasteles en rodajas. relación calidad-precio. el personal encantador.

We went to m&s for lunch, thinking it was better to eat there as it should be fresh ,Sadly not, and so hot in there, my daughter had a Victorian cup cake type, they said it was fresh that morning, but fresh from where, I was so hungry I order a baked potato with tuna and sweet corn, the potato was so over baked and the tuna tasted of vinegar , truly how can M&S sell such amazing produce and serve such RUBBISH shame on you,

Popped in for the first time to this cafe. Late in the day. The cafe was dirty with food all over the floor. Tables full of dirty crockery. An abundance of staff around, some stood around talking. The ladies who served us were very nice though extremely slow. Lovely view but no return visit I am afraid. However coffee was good and the cheese scone delicious. Hence the score...The only redeeming fact!

Living locally and always walking into the town, we go into M&S cafe for a snack and a nice cup of tea. The food is very nice with a good selection of various sandwiches and cakes, plus hot food. The staff are always very friendly. It can get very busy, but you can always get a seat somewhere. If you are lucky there are seats overlooking the sea.

Upon arriving back in Worthing I was hungry but didn't want a full lunch so decided on an afternoon tea instead. Eyes bigger than my belly (only just!) I ordered my tea and then sat down to wait while it was brought to me. I didn't need to wait long before the waitress brought a three tiered delight comprising of a china teaplate of finger sandwiches - beef and mustard, egg and cress, ham and cheese, and smoked salmon and cream cheese. If that didn't fill a person up (I was full by the third sandwich!), the next plate was a large fruit scone, large pot of real clotted cream and a miniature jar of jam. The scone was neatly wrapped in serviettes and taken to my hotel for a snack. I then concentrated on the top tier, a sumptuous macaroon, miniature real chocolate cream eclair and a miniature cupcake. For £6.95, it was worth every penny. Well done M & S and your staff. I walked along Worthing's promenade afterwards feeling a little fat wobbling buddha of sated happiness :-)

We always pop in the cafe at M&S for a cup of tea and a shared cake when we pick our daughter up from work on a Sunday.They make a lovely pot of tea.

what a good choice of food and drink on offer the seating is nice and the prices are fair. Always a good place to stop for a bite to eat. Nice staff as well

In Worthing, there are so many coffee shops now, all I guess fighting for each other's business. The Marks and Spencer cafe is in a great location with upper floor views of the sea, however it is just so slow to pay for your order. The staff (mainly older or perhaps semi retired, but nothing wrong with that) were very slow to process the order, process it through the till before finally the customer receiving the coffee, or items that required heating (such as a bacon roll). People were queuing, then were chatting with staff, it was quite painful to watch.Prices are about average whether it be for food or drink. The coffees are served in larger cups with a small biscuit which is a nice touch. The bacon rolls are also recommended.There is nothing wrong with the delivery (when it eventually arrived), and the quality of food and drink, but if you want a "quicker stop" and/or a bit more efficiency then I would suggest going elsewhere.

This is a strange cafe. They have recently done it up but is still too many tables crammed in and therefore personal space is not great. There only ever seems to be one side open and on our last visit the girl serving didn't look that clean to be honest. I'm sure she was lovely but having someone serve you looking unkempt is off putting.

A lovely afternoon tea here. Also lovely Christmas goodies available to buy. I purchased a special offer of 2 mulled fruit teabags with an extra one free! Very nice!

Visited this coffee shop yesterday. Very disappointed. The tables that were not occupied by people were occupied by dirty crockery. The service was very slow. No serviettes anywhere. Accidentally found the condiments but not the cutlery. The atmosphere was not very pleasant either. If you want a quick cup of coffee, this is not the place to go. You need to allow 45 minutes due to the slow service and not enough staff.

Don't get me wrong. The food here is lovely. Unfortunately the staff can be a bit too helpful! One member of staff started clearing our table before we had even started our food. She knocked things over and took the sugar before we had even used it. Another member of staff started putting dirty hand near our 9 month old daughter and almost touched her food as i was putting it in her mouth. Over all it wasnt the best visit to a cafe.

Very busy and not a great selection of home made food/cakes with a difference .It is what it is ..a shop cafe that's always very busy and sometimes hard to get a seat straight away .

Love this place I go here once a week if not more staff very friendly good value for money and very yummy food can't wait to go again

Only wanted a cup of tea and a snack. There was virtually no cake left. But the worst feature was the wait for service...nearly fifteen minutes behind only three other customers. There were other staff around but just one waitress was serving the queue.
