Grotty building, poor quality over-priced breakfast with cheap sliced pan bread. But main problem was lack of cleanliness.

Service was ok but they were playing awful cheesy Japanese pop music , several in a row it made me want to leave

Love this place so much, I often sit in here drinking coffees, filling my belly and working. Great atmosphere, friendly staff and a really chilled/comfortable environment. Try to visit every time I’m in Bristol, best coffee in st nicks!

***This review is an edited version from a glowing review I posted 3 years ago hence the feedback from the owner below will not match up with my updated review.*** I used to love this place when I lived and worked in Bristol back in 2012 to 2019 and visited regularly. Returned today after 6 years and was very much looking forward to it. It seems it has been sold and is no longer the happy buzzing cafe revival I remember. It was sad. The place was empty on a Friday lunch time at half term. No atmosphere. Soulless. Even though we were the only people in the cafe (which is never a good sign) our sandwich was so slow to arrive we took it to go. The sandwich was so disappointing to look at compared to what I was expecting it went in the bin. I think all the positive reviews date back to before the previous owners sold it. Hence people have read these reviews, visited and been shocked and disappointed at how the reviews don’t make sense in reality.

I turned up for a coffee date, with high hopes having read a review. What i found was a dirty scruffy little place in need of revival. I had a coffee while I waited but found that to be poor quality and strength. I called my date so I could meet him elsewhere. I don't like leaving negative feedback, but I feel this is warranted. Sorry

The coffees were nice and the place is not expensive. But it's dark and dingy (half the bulbs in the lights were broken ) and they don't turn on the heating even in the winter so it's freezing (mostly due to the single pane windows) until after the lunch service has heated the place from the kitchen. The staff were fine. The bacon king has a really good amount of bacon in it for only 6 quid and everything was nice quality and nicely cooked, but I had to eat with my coat on and the food became cold really quickly because of the freezing temperature inside the cafe. Also the ketchup was fridge temperature which made the food colder still.

The matcha latte and bacon were good. Prices are correct. Well located, however it is freezing cold inside and I found the tables quite dirty…

Hands down the worst breakfast experience ever. I have no idea how this place has a high rating. It needs to be shut down. Disgusting. We ordered the pancakes with maple syrup for the kids to share, a vanilla chai muffin for my husband (the last baked item in the case at that time), a smashed avocado toast with bacon for myself, and coffees all for £30. It took a good 20 minutes to receive the food, and I really wish we hadn't as it was all terrible: - The muffin was stale and hard. - The avocado toast was not fresh at all, the bread was stale, and the avocado tasted old and like the prepared kind you'd get from a grocery store. Also, the bacon was simultaneously undercooked and burnt (how??). - But the most shocking dish of all was the pancakes. They looked nothing like the photos from other reviewers, instead they looked like the tiny premade kind you get from Aldi or Tesco, and then burnt so badly in a pan that they were hard as a rock. I was charged £8.25 for them and they were completely inedible. I returned the pancakes and asked for a refund. The staff argued that that's how they're normally served and I told them that it's unacceptable, especially at that price. They offered to cook up another pancake to increase it to four, but how does that solve the issue that the other pancakes were burnt so hard they might as well be frisbees? I noticed then that they had put out more baked goods in the display case, and asked to just exchange the pancakes for two slices of banana bread. It was only after passing the plates over did they let me know that they were frozen and they didn't have a microwave to defrost them. I absolutely resent having spent money here and wish I could have it all refunded. Just avoid this place like the plague. Not worth it at all.

Good vegan selection. Would have given 5 stars if more condiments had been available in addition to ketchup and brown sauce and service is a little basic.

This place was probably good in its heyday, back in the 1700s when it claims to have opened. But now it seems run down and really in need of a makeover. Felt cold and messy inside with lots of stock everywhere. Uncomfortable seats with old thin cushions. It also smells of grease from the fryer which reached all of the floors. The food and coffee is alright. But the atmosphere is the issue. The staff are nice but don’t seem well looked after. I’m suspicious about some of the 5* reviews which don’t seem genuine

Cute cafe! I find the layout a bit odd. Order downstairs and waitresses trot eveything up stairs. We were on the middle floor which has a bar area. Why not make the coffees there? Not sure if i am abnormal but i really get peeved off when hot drinks arrive with breakfast. Our coffees also arrived with no sugars, spoons or even milk? We had to get up and get everything ourselves. Full English arrived on a side plate which was actually not to bad and tasty but again no salt/pepper or anything. You could really make this place a nice spot.

Delicious coffee and one of the best burgers (Bacon King) I've ever had for breakfast. The place is clean and has an acceptable price (perhaps a little high for a Spaniard). It is located in the heart of Bristol. One of the big problems I see is that the place is usually quite crowded and the place is quite small. Very friendly staff, who served quickly and gave us the food we ordered quickly. Highly recommended.

La peor experiencia jamás pidió té de desayuno que venía en una taza con leche ya en más bolsita de té sin cuchara para quitar dicha bolsita de té y nada para ponerlo. Pidieron aguacate y hongos en tostadas todos estaban fríos como piedra, los hongos estaban enlatados venían en un plato muy pequeño, además tuvimos que pedir cubiertos. El lugar era muy asqueroso si no fuera por el hecho de que teníamos mucha hambre y ya habíamos pagado nos habríamos ido. Gracias a Dios no necesité usar el inodoro porque pasar por revisiones anteriores fue atractivo. No hay nada bueno que decir sobre este lugar.

Foods and services are good but I think there is no heater in this cafe so its freezing.

This cafe is gorgeous but sooo cold. There is a policy to keep the heating off and all the doors open. The poor staff have to work in these freezing conditions. Not ok! Also it’s a false economy, if it was warm it would be busy, people would stay longer and spend more

Probándolo por primera vez para desayunar, he visto a los niños hacer mejor desayuno inglés que podría hacer con una buena limpieza al igual que los cubiertos que finalmente nos dieron con nuestra comida que tardó bastante en llegar. Las instalaciones del baño estaban extremadamente sucias. Desafortunadamente en esta ocasión parece que no se nos ocurre nada positivo que decir, lo siento chicos! Realmente necesito ayudar a su juego aquí!

Nice cozy cafe. Apparently the oldest in Bristol. Coffee was nice and the bacon toasties was really good. The have 3 floors and different themes. The top most has couches to sit around. Would definitely come back again

A crappy coffee shop. Disheveled and untidy. Food is very basic. Coffee is good though.

Overpriced rubbish taste AVOID. Paid 30 pounds for breakfast for two. zero presentation. Breakfast thrown onto table. Very oily. Below average bread from supermarket (cheapest one used) Avocado literally tasted like paste literally. Coffee had no strength or kick in it felt like milk literally. Had to go to cafe Nero after to get coffee fix.

I went with my best friend and the food was 10. The staff was very friendly and approachable at all times. It is a very nice place. The food was very delicious... I recommend going to the place!! Thanks to the group that assisted us that day.

Has so much potential being in this beautiful historic building but is really lacking in atmosphere and the service I received was cold and unfriendly. I ordered a macchiato and it was lukewarm when I got it

No hay excusa para hacer el té como una estación de servicio de autopista. Bolsa de té tirada en una taza que no se permite preparar y leche añadida de inmediato. Así que terminas con un té insípido pálido e inexistente. Así es como hacen el té en muchos lugares del mundo pero no en Inglaterra. La limpieza de las instalaciones era terrible. Los pisos del restaurante parecían sucios y los baños eran sombríos, muy sombríos. Tal contraste con otros lugares en los que comimos durante nuestra estancia en Bristol. No recomendaríamos este café.

Three stars seems about right. Sausages were Richmond. Too many delicious pork sausages around here to be serving up cheap rubbish. Try harder

Dropped in for the first time. What a gem - beats the high street brands hands down. Great coffee and reasonably priced food. Nice selection without being too complicated. Great for a meet up or quiet few minutes.

Charming building for the oldest cafe in Bristol dating to 1748. Outside seating when the weather is nice, and upstairs seating if you want to sit inside. Up an old staircase, there is a spacious first floor seating, with a window seat with the most fabulous view of the entire street down to the end of the road. On the second floor there is an even more comfortable parlour sitting area with books to choose from.

Ordered two cheddar toastie melts for £5.25 each ! All you get given is normal bread with melted cheese for that price. Boring, average, for that money! I'm very unsatisfied! Rip off!

Really not good. Coffee worse than you’d get out of a podded machine. Porridge undercooked and overpriced. Tables covered in crumbs and generally sticky. Lesson learnt, just because something has been around a long time, doesn’t mean it’s good.

Sept. 2024. Horrible food. Stale and bad cooked. Eggs overcooked, they taste like rubber, bacon the same. Everything uneatable. The worst food my husband and I eaten in our life. No recommendable at all.

Hmmm. Creo que alguien necesita revivir este café. ¿Cómo se muestra esto como un promedio de 4 / 5 estrellas! Vino a desayunar y fue muy poco inspirador. Diré que el café no estaba mal. Pero la comida fue bastante decepcionante. “Aguacate machacado en tostadas con champiñones al ajo” sonaba bien, pero básicamente era guacamole muy fino untado en tostadas muy baratas con (no ajos en absoluto) champiñones y una masa abrumadora de copos de chile seco. El brioche de tocino estaba bien, siendo el brioche en sí un punto culminante, pero el tocino mal cocido te deja masticando bandas elásticas de grasa de tocino. El servicio estaba bien, pero el personal parece estar pasando por las mociones. Lamentablemente, con tanta elección maravillosa en la zona, no volveremos.

Terrible café. Americano era definitivamente café instantáneo y no estoy seguro de qué leche, pero sabía raro. El personal estaba sucio. El área de preparación de comida parecía sucia y nada higiénica. La comida no se obtenía bien, sabía como si fuera de la gama de alimentos agrícolas. ¡Visite el baño bajo su propio riesgo! Sucio, secador roto, sin toallas de mano

Don't bother! Went here a few years ago and it was great so returned this trip but that was a big mistake. Staff grumpy, like they were annoyed we arrived. Cafe was virtually empty at 10am. Porridge was undercooked, just milk on top of porridge oats. Bacon and sausage rolls were served in brioche buns, slightly stale. Everything tastes cheap and not cheerful. Coffee served with milk that had gone off. Orange juice must have been cheap own brand. Such a shame, once a great location and cafe is now so bad.

Cafe Revival is definitely in need of reviving, Luke warm coffee, Average overpriced breakfast, scruffy tired decor, uninterested staff!

Gorgeous breakfast - almost full English and lovely coffee and what a beautiful building. A bit lacking in atmosphere - not many customers and cafeteria style furniture - I was hoping for a bit more of a historical feel to match the exterior - still worth visiting.

Dancing staff behind the counter and a view on cheerful newly weds at the city council, and plenty of healthy breakfast options made this a good start of the day

Small place, limited menu, but oh so good. We had breakfast there , tried the vegetarian one, it was just the best English breakfast I’ve had so far. And the hot chocolate omg, best ever . Sitting outside on a sunny morning or inside of it rains, it’s comfortable either way. 100% recommended

perfect for small lunch/breakfast! relativly cheap and delicious. Can recommend the chicken sandwich with avocade and the quesadilla! (Cajun chicken)

The coffee and bacon brioche are delicious, and the cafe has a great atmosphere! The coffees are all under £3, so they're also very affordable!

Food was terrible. For £9.50 my toast was burnt and soggy, egg was a mess, smashed avocado tasted like it was out of a packet.

Food was okay for a quick stop for lunch. We visited around 3pm and they were open until 5pm. They had already closed the snug area upstairs so we couldn't sit in there. The staff were nice but all seemed really young and were messing around a little/shouting and talking very loudly up and down the stairs having conversations. It felt a little unwelcoming as it felt as though they were typing to close everything whilst we were there, eventhough they were open for another 2 hours. We were not the only ones in the cafe either

Was going to have a cake but couldn’t read the name of it through the mucky glass cabinet . Dirty inside and out . Put me off . The cappuccino was too milky and made in a cup that was too big

*AVOID* Filthy, oldest Cafe in Bristol and hasn't been cleaned since. Everything was cold except the tea and coffee. Hair in the egg , the bacon still had legs , the sausages were like rubber. The Nutella was nice. The toilets were disgusting. Avoid like the plague as you may catch the plague there.

Tenner for a Full English on a tiny plate, No hash brown or even beans. Bacon barely cooked. Forget it.

Ordered smashed avocado on toast with bacon .... Got guacamole from a pot on brown bread with a ton of chilli flakes on it. They were surprised when we returned it and requested a refund.

Well, quite a nice place for breakfast in the center of Bristol. On a warm day there are tables outside, so it's worth using, but it's also worth going inside and seeing the place itself - it's very nice. The breakfast burger was tasty, the coffee was quite okay too. It wasn't any outstanding food, but it was tasty.

Looked nice from the menu, but DOES NOT OPEN AT 8.00AM. Shame they can't be bothered updating the website or the front door of the shop.

We just had coffee and sat outside in gorgeous weather. The coffee was really superb and service was quick and efficient. We got there at about 9.15 just before the market opened.

Café revival is supposed to be the oldest coffee shop in Bristol. In the centre of the old city.

What a shame that a building with such history is so unloved now. The breakfast and coffee was adequate but had we used the bathroom before ordering we wouldn’t have even considered eating there! I’ve never seen such a grim, disgustingly dirty area. If they can’t even clean the toilet for days, then I dread to think what the kitchen was like.

Lovely building and location, unfortunately the food was a bit disappointing. The eggs were over done so the white was like plastic . The. Coffees were forgotten about , then they came luke warm and one of them was just warm milk. It seemed like a place that will always have passing trade and therefore complacency has set in.

Absolutely terrible. The rubber-like pancakes under a non-descript syrup will be hard to forget.

Nice little cafe, but they do not serve smoothies anymore so I wish they would take it off their sign as it's why I came into the place.

Despite some of the negative reviews, we decided to call in for a coffee and am glad we did. Can't comment on the food but the latte was excellent.

So glad we couldn't get into The Cosy Club this morning. Found this gem instead, coffee was the best we'd tasted all weekend, and the pancakes, bacon and maple syrup were scrummy.

Went there for the first time for lunch today - food was amazing, had the veggie quesadillas which were utterly delicious. Toilets defo need attention however, just FYI.

Favourite cafe to go to! It’s got my favourite hot chocolate and the breakfast is simply amazing!

Not bad by any means, but not great either. The place really needs a good clean and some money spending on it. I had the almost full breakfast. It wasn't bad, but the sausages were of poor quality. I would happily pay a bit more for better quality.

Food is excellent and decently priced. It could all be a bit cleaner. The bacon is on the floor.

Avoid at all costs!!! Unless you want a child-size plated breakfast that is freezing cold. The entire cafe was dingy, lights were not working and tables did not seem cleaned. Several tables around us had been left with plates from previous customers and did not get cleared even though two staff members came upstairs and walked past it, they proceeded to leave it there and go back downstairs. The food itself was disgusting, and did not taste cooked remotely. Save yourself the traumatic experience and go somewhere else!! PS if I could have given 0 states, I would have. Worst restaurant experience I’ve ever had in my life, £9.50 for the breakfast described as above - thankfully the manager knew his food was terrible and did not hesitate to refund me on request as he clearly knew it was shockingly vile. The £9.50 will be going towards therapy to recover from such a traumatising experience with food!!!!!!!!

The place was fridgidly cold, and we kept our coats on for the whole meal, and so did the staff. The coffee was served quickly but one was cold, and needed sending back. The meal was okay and basic.

Nice “oldest coffee house” in Bristol. It’s located in central Bristol close to the vibrant (on weekdays) market- that is a definitive recommendation in itself. It was quite busy when I visited. - coffee was great 👍🏻 - vegetarian breakfast was rather small (one egg, tiny avocado) & disappointing (veg sausages should be a protein replacement- not a potato roll!!) Had to wait ~45min for my order to arrive - but received a free coffee for that( they forgot my order I guess)z Room for improvement imho - especially for these prices.

Absolutely love this breakfast spot! The Cajun chicken quesadillas are a must-try and the matcha is also fantastic!

Friendly staff but otherwise a bit grim. The upstairs was closed for building work (fair enough) hence the sense of sitting in a cupboard but I also wonder if this had a wider effect on our experience (is there a larger kitchen upstairs which wasn’t available when we visited?). I had the ‘almost full English’ which was tasteless and bland - the sausages were evidently the cheapest to be found. I appreciate cost pressures are considerable nowadays but it’s a downward spiral if the quality is so low. We deliberately chose an independent cafe rather than a chain in an effort to support these businesses but at least with a chain you know what you’re going to get. Disappointing but maybe it was an outlier experience compared with what’s more typical.

This is not the place it was. Today I found it sticky, grubby and unkempt. There were cardboard boxes lying around, and the toilets were dirty and had not been cleaned recently. I had to chivvy the batrista for our coffees when they did not appear after 10 minutes. Great location but needs serious TLC.

Allegedly Bristol's oldest coffee shop. Adjacent to St Nick's Market. Rambling establishment on several floors. Excellent latte and cheese toastie with red onion.
