Parked the car and fancied some lunch before shopping. Literally fell into this gem 3 metres away and it was lovely. My partner was on crutches and doesn't like the sun so, when it was too hot inside, Jane seated us around the side in the shaded terrace. Food was great and service spot on. Thanks to Jane, Amy and all the staff who were so kind.

I rarely write reviews because i believe you should expect good service but our night at cafe j was so much better than "good" that i feel compelled to sing their praises. Our wedding was a quiet affair for family and friends. For the reception we hired cafe J to cater for a party of 16. They decorated the cellar space for us, flowers were lovely the fire was welcoming of a blustery February night the space perfect. However the night was made exceptional by the staff, Jane and Emily front of house were everywhere topping up glasses dealing with our guests with intelligence and good humour but without being intrusive. Julie and Colin prepared our food to perfection, the steaks cooked to individual preferences the sauces and veg were excellent and plentiful I honestly do not think it could have been bettered. No pressure was placed upon us to finish the party, they even complained they were enjoying it so much they didn't want us to go. If you are planning a party or reception small to medium size you will struggle to find a venue to match this one. I can assure you the next time i get married we will be back at cafe J!

Picked this cafe as it was dog friendly although in the end we sat outside so I don’t know what inside is like. We ate from the specials - beef stew in a Yorkshire pudding for me, fish chowder for the husband & burger for the 10 year old boy child. All were excellent. Good wine & husband liked the beer choice. Service was excellent & good price. I’d definitely recommend this place

We hired this venue for an early Saturday evening get together for our family after the Christmas rush. As the group included a couple of small children as well as adults we wanted somewhere where we wouldn't worry about disturbing other diners in a larger restaurant. This was the perfect place, cosy yet large enough to fit all 19 of us in without feeling crowded. Julie and her lovely staff could not have been more helpful or accommodating. The food, both quality and choice was amazing. They even provided small bite size food as an option for the children which we hadn't ordered.Everyone had a wonderful time. I would highly recommend this venue for both a party event, lunch or just to pop in for a coffee and piece of their amazing cake through the day.

I’m sorry to say but a group of us went here for lunch today and my soup was highly salted and tasted of veg stock cubes. The coffee was very weak. The ham and cheese ciabatta turned out to be chicken and Brie and the bread must have been put in the microwave, it was rock hard. It was also very slow service but I think it was because we were a group of 12 and they may have been short staffed. I don’t like to complain but as the food was almost inedible and I felt I needed to give the feedback. There must have been a problem in the kitchen.

I have to agree with the previous reviewer AC about the inadequate amount of food provided for the buffet on 20th December.I messaged you directly about this but you didn't have the courtesy to reply. The canapes etc were miniscule and the sandwiches very small. There is no way anyone could think this amount of food was anywhere near adequate for 64 adults. We are due a partial refund as a significant number of participants got no food at all. Those that did got an inadequate amount.Extremely disappointing.

Lovely coffee however I was made to feel very stupid by the staff. I ordered an almond croissant from the menu which did not state whether this would be served warm or cold. It arrived very hot (straight from the oven I assume). I ate it and when the waitress cleared the table I casually mentioned that I would have preferred it to be cold. I was told that the "default serving" for almond croissants was warm. I suggested that it might an idea to ask the customer how they wanted it serving. A while later I went to pay the bill to a different member of staff and asked if my concern about the croissant had been mentioned. It hadn't, so I again suggested that I would have preferred it cold but then was told that almond croissants are always served warm, nobody could eat them cold because the marzipan needed to melt into the pastry layers. She even then went on to tell me the manufacturer....Delice de France....and then said that next time I should remember to ask for the croissant to be served cold.(Clearly I am stupid, despite spending extended periods of time in France, for not recognising that the "default serving" for croissants is warm!!!!! ) I was made to feel very foolish for asking for even daring to suggest that I might prefer a Delice de France croissant cold!!!!!! I hadn't even left the cafe and the member of staff at the till was commenting on it to the next customer. OBVIOUSLY this is no longer about the croissant but the attitude of the staff, there are many customer service courses available and I suggest this member of staff is sent on one.I wouldn't know if she is the owner of the establishment or not but I hope she isn't.

Lunch menu had lots to chose from and more on the specials board.I picked the veggie jacket potato with chilli filling the was a large size spud (I was warned) and a light salad on the side it nearly got me beat but I made it in the end very nice. My wife asked for the corned beef hash which was nice but she told me it was more like a chunky soup really with some corned beef in it, there was 3 big slices of fresh tiger bread to go with it very tasty. We also had a small tub of fries, decaf tea for 2 as well, the whole bill came to £21 a bargain I think for what we had, I would think this must be one of the best value places in Ilkley. I was looking for somewhere to take my fiancé for something to eat in Yorkshire as we are from Liverpool I thought it would be nice. My girls name is Jayne, I call her j, so when I found this little cafe called cafe j, I thought eureka this is the one. As it was her birthday today, I thought it would be a nice little surprise for her, so without telling her where we going I just drove from Liverpool to ilkley. Parking was easy and cheaper than Liverpool. After parking, we wandered around for a few mins till I found cafe j, shall we try here for a bite to eat, I said to Jayne, I think she knew by this time, she got it. Down the stairs we went and as it was a bit fresh outside the log fire was so warm and welcoming. We sat for a while then the lady I think was the owner asked us did we want a drink, we ordered a full English with a huge pot of tea, I mean enough for two cups each, easy. The lady made small talk and she was so nice and friendly to us. Our breakies soon arrived and boy was it worth it. No fat on the bacon, no grease or gristle in the sausage, fried bread and toast were spot on, little ceramic tub of beans, mushrooms cooked spot on and tomatoes. Couldn't fault it, plate was cool, four different compartments on the one plate so everything was seperated, washed it down with a nice cuppa, little walk around likely for a while, had a coffee in Costa and drove back home, why isn't everyday a cafe j day.

Lovely place so cosy and welcoming inside and relaxing watching the world go by if you want to eat or drink outside. Food lovely and service excellent. The lady who owns Cafe J was so friendly and accommodating and so were her staff. I would highly recommend a visit.

Came across this place on a day out with hubby. Lovely welcome from Julie ( owner ). We both had poached eggs on toast and tea. Food great. Made to feel very welcome. Would love to come back at some time and have a full evening meal.

A quick visit when passing but wish we could have stayed longer, it was absolutely lovely. Delicious sandwiches, freshly made and served with piping hot chips and salad with a delicious dressing, we ate every mouthful. Service (by owner Julie) was friendly and welcoming but not overbearing. As we were in a little bit of a hurry, we didn't stay for the cakes but they looked very inviting, as did other people's meals. Portion sizes just right. Loo tiny but clean. Disabled access would be limited - cafe is down some steep steps and the loo door is narrow (but there is outside seating on a nice day).

What a great little find this was. Lovely little cellar cafe with outside seating. Husband says jacket potatoe with veggie chilli was the best he'd ever eaten. Service was wonderful. Both ladies couldn't do enough for us and were great with our 3 year old. Nothing was too much trouble. Food was fabtastic and homemade cakes were gorgeous. Would definitely recommend this place

Gorgeous! Me and my partner came in on the off chance and so happy we did! Hot chocolate was one of the best I've ever had (and I have drunk more then my fair share!). Food was fabulous and the staff are lovely - I think it is family run. They seem to know a lot of people on a 1st name basis which shows they must get a lot of repeat customers! Would 100% recommend and will be back when am next in Ilkley :)

My husband & I held a private party at Cafe j in March for 56 people. We could not have chosen a better venue for our friends and family! Julie was so friendly and helpful, and her team which helped out on the night were lovely. Chef made delicious Spanish meatballs which were served with rice - a perfect informal dish which all our guests enjoyed. Julie also set up a gazebo outside and lit a couple of chimeneas which made a great outdoor area and we really can't thank her enough for making our night extremely special. If you are thinking of having a party, you wouldn't be able to find a better private venue in ilkley or the surrounding area.

This is a lovely little cafe with a friendly atmosphere and a warm welcome. In the winter there is always a log burner throwing out it's warmth, and if you can get the seats in front of it you can toast nicely. There is also a daily paper to read which is a nice touch.A really good place for a coffee and a cake or a tasty lunch. The food is home made and delicious. In the summer, on a nice day, you can sit outside in the sun with a glass of wine.

Four of us popped in to take advantage of the bacon sandwich offer before 11:00 but, instead, had a full english!! Sausage, egg, back bacon, baked beans, fried mushrooms, grilled tomato, toast and fried bread washed down with copious amounts of tea and all for £6.25. Simply brilliant.

It was nice to receive a warm welcome on entering Café J's. This is a cosy basement café with a warming wood burner to add to the atmosphere and to thaw out 'customers in the Winter. There is also an outdoor terrace for warmer weather.I ordered an Americano, which was nice and smooth. I followed this with an Espresso and the waitress enquired if I would like a glass of tap water to accompany it. That was fantastic, an English café knowing that Espresso is often drunk with water (as all waiting staff know this on the continent but not often in the UK). The only negative, is that the tea offering is not loose tea. As anyone that has listened to or read my reviews knows, I bang on about cafés not offering any loose tea. In my opinion, tea bags are fine for convenience at home, but loose tea when drinking out. It makes the tea a little bit special and may differentiate it from the tea drunk at home. Unless loose tea is offered, I drink coffee. That aside, Café J is well worth a visit.

A fantastic venue for a private function like our work Christmas meal/party. Julie (the proprietor) made sure every last detail was perfect - the restaurant was set out beautifully with Xmas decorations surrounding the roaring fire, and the table decorations looked amazing too! Our 3 course meal was delicious, accompanied by excellent wines and drinks, and we rounded the evening off with great music and lots of dancing. It really is a lovely cosy cafe/restaurant and I would highly recommend a visit either for a relaxed lunch, coffee/tea and homemade cakes, or one of Julie's themed evening events.

My wife and I have been visiting this little gem of a cafe since Julie opened getting on for 5 years ago. It is so nice to greeted with a cheery smile and made to feel welcome and at home.We popped in this morning for our usual cuppa and much to my surprise Julie tells me that she has just put a winter special on the menu of a bacon sandwich with a pot of tea for £4. Now what red blooded male could resist that. I couldn't, it was brilliant!!Keep it up Julie.
