Stopped in The Columbus for a hot drink and cake as a break from the drab Scarborough weather and we were not disappointed. All I can say is the chocolate brownie was WOW, the best my husband and I have ever had!

Don’t bother! Unless you just want an alcoholic drink! You get you a sandwich in a box, don’t get asked if you want brown or white bread. Me and my mum used to come her all the time and actually got value for money! Not anymore =(

Located opposite Scarborough Harbour and to the east end of Sandside (about 80-100m from the roundabout), this quaint little business was just the place to start an afternoon in this popular Yorkshire town. After bussing it in with the boys while the girls drove, we had a bit of time to kill so my father-in-law and I stopped for a quick pint. ‘Birra Moretti’ on tap - lovely! Decent outdoor seats overlooking the North Sea and warmish February weather, it made for a good half hour on my maiden visit to Scarborough.

First the positives.... Great setting, plenty of outdoor seating, lovely friendly staff. But unfortunately the coffee is very poor. Cheap machine coffee at barista prices. Ordered latte & flat white & we left both. Have seriously had better from Greggs. Sorry, we really wanted to like this place having visited many times before the changes but unfortunately we won't be visiting again

We dropped into the Café Columbus during a one day visit to Scarborough, we had travelled here by train and having first visited the castle, returned to the seafront to find a nice place for a cup of coffee. The café was quite busy on the day of our visit (early afternoon, midweek, school half term holidays) but we were able to find a vacant table. The café offered a good amount of outside seating overlooking the picturesque harbour area and I also noticed some seating inside when I went in to order. We ordered two cafe lattes and enjoyed the coastal ambience watching the world go by. The drinks arrived at the table with the minimum of fuss and the lady who brought them was very polite.

OK so you're overlooking the harbour. But £2.90 for a latte and £2.95 for a scone (yes ONE!) is somewhat taking the Michael. Prices like this will make visitors feel that Scarborough is a rip off resort, which it isnt. I live here and that's the last time I will be visiting this place.

Went here for lunch the other day. All the food we had was absolutely Terrible, all were cheap ingredients, even the coffee tasted cheap, cheap watery Tomato ketchup too. However prices are extremely expensive! All plastic forks, paper boxes to eat from etc . Toilet was dirty. Will never return to this place. Only positive is its location over looking the harbour.

The music was too loud, which isn’t normally a problem. However when the CD keeps jumping because it clearly needs wiping it becomes annoying! The day after storm Arwen, and snow falling. Why did the door have to be wide open, it was freezing inside, so we might as well sat outside! The waitress was very good at clearing and cleaning tables when they were vacated. We ordered tea and only got hot water till we pointed out no one had out a tea bag in the pot! The toastie we ordered with a little side salad was delicious. However the main gripe was it was impractical to eat out of a disposable box! What on earth is that all about? If it was a take out, then perhaps I can understand. But a box?? With salad in a plastic container?? It must cost them a fortune to waste money on those! Which would explain the high prices. The cheese was well done and oozing out which was lovely, but please supply a napkin at least! Also needed To request salt and pepper. No menus on tables, just some scruffy looking ones at the desk. Looked ancient. May return when they get back to using plates, proper knives and forks with napkins. We are local, so it’s no problem to find another toastie and a teabag!

Hate to leave poor reviews but really disappointed after a recent visit. Like others have commented, the prices have increased ridiculously and aren't displayed in sight. We're locals and visit regularly but won't be returning as we feel exploited paying £10.90 for 2 shop purchased toasted teacakes and a pot of tea. Staff are aware of the poor reviews online and don't seem that concerned & tried to justify the prices saying they were competitive yet we went went to the Yew Tree cafe at Scalby and noticed the same items were £6.60 on their menu - that means its 65% more expensive at the Cafe Columbus and not justifiable.

My family has visited cafe Columbus on every visit to Scarborough for over 30 years. It offered lovely lunches and drinks with a great view of the harbour. NOW it has had a refit and is a sort of bar/cake/coffee place with no food. We ordered 2 milkshakes neither were anything other than flavoured milk, a hot chocolate and 2 frozen cocktails neither of which tasted of the gin and rum they claimed to be and the bill was over £25. Far too pricey for what is on offer. Disappointed that our family tradition has come to an end as we will not be going again.

Went to this cafe yesterday. Big mistake. We got a flat white coffee, 2 lattes & a cappucino & 3 brownies & a banana bread. These were very small portions and the drinks were by no means large. For these items we were charged just under £27.! I asked if this was correct as there were no prices on show or any menus to check. . I was told it was correct. If you don't want to be ripped off avoid this place. Also as other reviewers have mentioned unfriendly staff & tables not cleaned properly between customers. no napkins given & empty hand soaps in the toilets so you couldn't wash your hands. Hardly ideal in the middle of a pandemic. Still convinced we were over charged, maybe they are trying to make up their loses since the pandemic.?

We visited for a late lunch, and as soon as we walked in I wished we hadn’t. The whole place is very dated, the furniture ripped and stained. The food is outrageously expensive for what it is... everything we wanted to order they seemed to have run out of, even bottled water. FYI it’s cash only, they don’t take card payments. Eventually, after waiting a what felt like an age, the food arrived only for me to notice the bread my toddler was served was mouldy all over.

My favourite spot for a lovely cuppa coffee. Always have the Nescafé option but they do do cafe latte and cappuccinos too. Along with fab milkshakes. Been coming here since 1996 and never had a bad experience. Don’t understand the negative reviews as I’ve found the prices to be reasonable. Been coming here for years but over the last 3 years it's steadily been going downhill =( the staff seem to be getting younger and younger and always have to inform you that there will be a wait for your food. There is not enough of them to cope. The food is still nice enough but to anyone that has been a regular visitor it's so sad to see that a lot of the seating has been torn and then covered with tape. So desperately want it to return to its former self as it's a fab place to sit and watch the world go by. Oh and bring back the lemon meringue pie!

I've been visiting this cafe as long as I can remember when I was a little girl with my parents and now with my own family. The coffee has always been excellent as are the cakes. There are also hit food choices and I can recommend the jacket potatoes. The prices aren't too over priced considering it's magnificent harbour view and the fact you can sit inside or out. Dogs are welcome outside and water is provided for them. My only wish is that they would deck the outside seating area as it is on a slight incline and can cause havoc when your coffee keeps sliding away from you. It would really freshen and modernize the place. Either way though, give it a try. It's just perfect on a warm sunny day watching the world go by with a decent cuppa and delish cakes.

Called in for lunch and whilst the food was fine, our overall experience was spoilt by the misleading menu and prices.Firstly we ordered soup from a hand written board on the counter only to be told that soup was not available so why leave the board, that only had soups on it, on the counter with about four or five different soups on? That board was still there when we left.We also ordered a couple of paninis (one tuna and one ham) which were priced "from £4.95". When we paid the bill we had been charged an extra £1.05 for the tuna and £0.85 for the ham. If basic fillings like ham and tuna attract an extra charge it makes you wonder what filling comes with a £4.95 panini. Coke was £1.95 per can and didn't even come with a glass. This cafe offers toilets but the queue extends into the seating area of the cafe and the cafe wasn't even busy. The gents had no toilet paper. There wasn't even an empty tube which makes me think that the staff had taken the empty tube away and not restocked the dispenser. It's a shame to have to comment on these faults because the food was fine hence the balanced 'average' rating.

So asked for scones, no scones available either. So ordered flapjacks. Ordered tea for two, an americano and a hot chocolate. Had to ask for extra milk as one small jug arrived and one of us doesn't have milk but not enough for two hot drinks let alone three, also had to ask for spoons for sugar for the coffee. The coffee was lukewarm, the tea was not enough for two and a few minutes later we saw people on a another table eating scones! We won't bother in the future.

I get the impression that The Cafe Columbus is a bit unloved by day trippers to Scarborough, who might prefer the retro Knickerbocker Glory delights of The Harbour Bar or the many pubs and fish and chip shops along the seafront. But they'd be missing a trick because the Columbus's secret weapon is its very high quality coffee and cake.I paid £2.25 for a regular Americano and £3.85 for a slice of Hummingbird Cake, so only slightly more than chain coffee shops like Costa but so much better quality. The Hummingbird Cake is a delight: a cinnamon sponge containing walnuts and crushed pineapple, sandwiched with buttercream and drizzled with caramel. There is lots of seating indoors and out and you have a direct view of the harbour opposite (so good for boat and people watching). The rest of the Columbus' menu is mostly savoury snacks like toasted sandwiches, sausage rolls and the like - not particularly exciting from the look of it and I didn't sample them. The staff are pleasant too. So if you fancy a perfectly brewed coffee and a sweet treat, give it a try and you might just be pleasantly surprised.

Smoke/steam from kitchen was quite thick at times.good service from staff and food is served at table after ordering at the counter. nice and warm if you use the seating area up the steps

So it's a seaside cafe but it's a good one. Proper coffee, chunky toast, good choice of meals and drinks, indoor and outdoor seating, warm inside in winter, nice staff, welcomes dogs, located opposite the harbour, cleaner tha most other cafes we have been in - what more can I say apart from limited local parking - worth calling in for a drink/snack if you are walking past

My husband and I visited this cafe last Sunday morning, 4th December. We opened the door and nearly fell over 2 large dogs almost sat in the doorway with their local owners (who seemed oblivious to anything but their own dogs and 'doggy' conversations). We gingerly made our way to a side table to escape this doggie haven and watched with a sort of mordbid fascination as the cafe assistant brought over toast to the dog owners which they happily gave to their dogs to eat on the cafe floor. Not quite sure how this cafe has it's good hygiene rating with this going on! We weren't the only customers to look on in disbelief and a couple next door to us got up and left in disgust. When further dogs and their besotted owners piled through the door it was time for us to also make our exit - along with our appetite for any food in this establishment. 'Besotted local dog owners only welcome!'

Normally have at least one coffee here each day when visiting Scarborough. They do a nice bacon sandwich as well. Friendly place with good harbour views.

Whilst walking along the beach front came across this cafe. Decided to have a tea break, we ordered a cream tea and a tea with a piece of carrot cake. The staff was very friendly. The drinks were very nice and the size of the cakes enormous, no complaints there. Taking in the views of the harbour, ample outside seating.

Called here for coffee and cakes after walking down the hill and across the harbour-side. Cakes and coffee were as always good but the service was very very slow. The staff seemed to have only one speed - slow! Have been many times before but was disappointed with how slow the service was this time - staff could do with smiling a little more too and going a bit quicker when serving!

Came to Scarborough for a 3 day break with the girlfriend and decided to stop at this pleasant looking cafe. I'm afraid to say it was a bad choice. Ordered a coffee cake, scone with cream & jam and an americano. The scone was the only thing that could be reported as decent. The can of coke was warm, the coffee cake was as dry as an Arabs sandal, and the americano coffee came out Luke warm & minus the milk on the side. Would not visit here again. Lesson learnt

We have used this cafe for years summer & winter,Called in Friday for coffee & snacks, no table menus now,Food ordered, our drinks a good half finished before the food arrived, but it is all done fresh, we just ordered hot sandwiches of bacon, sausage.Very tasty, breakfasts delivered very close to us & looked great.Pleasant staff, but agree with other comments coffee not as good as it used to be. I think now we may have to visit another local cafe that also does the best ice cream in Scarborough

Good seating area inside but the best of this cafe is to sit outside. We often stop here for coffee and occasional breakfast at any time of year and if the sun is shining this is an ideal spot to sit for a while.Good drinks and food. Service is always quick and friendly.

We were so disappointed to be served undrinkable coffee and when we pointed it out returning full cups.... merely a Shrugged shoulder. This used to be our regular haunt albeit slow service the coffee used to be ok with a good selection of cakes. And a pleasant setting for soaking up the sun and view.Staff need retraining and the coffee changing.

Overall, coffee was acceptable, service was a little slow with no apparent system in place. It isn't clear either which way the Q is, so a little confusing if place was busy.Staff polite and pleasant. The view is great on the sea front and would go again if only to sit and have a coffee with a view

We called in this nice little cafe before our journey home. We found a seat and my friend went to get the drinks. I thought she had got lost as she was gone ages. The service was very slow which is a shame as this place has got potential.

Good location. ..nice tea and coffee...but someone with experience needs to sort the service out. The girls aren't rude but the whole ordering system is bizarre!!! Food not arriving ...people having to ask where their drinks are. .. people queuing. ..people being told to sit down at their table. ..The poor staff looked so confused. ... The communication between the counter and the kitchen needs an experienced person to come in and sort it out... because the food and drinks were fine when we finally got them!

Although what we ate & drank was perfectly acceptable the lack of menus ( not even typed & laminated very cheaply!!) was annoying. It was quite prices too but I understand that their rates will be high being on the front.

I came here with my partner for a quiet drink of hot chocolate, the staff were lovely and nothing was too much hassle. They made my hot chocolate to my liking and even had lactose free and soya milk. Also had lovely gluten free cakes that not many places have. Although the decor is a bit dated I would definitely visit again

We've been coming to Cafe Columbus for a long time and know to expect worn decor etc. Drinks were fine, scone was huge. T'is a little scruffier than we remembered, but the worst thing is that there are only school age girls running the place. Clearly no customer service skills and a bit of attitude. Will think twice before returning.

I have never seen such blatant racism in my life. This is 2024. People of colour and like minded people walking into this Jim Crow, antiquated backwards establish please be aware. To put a note not to offend is outrageous. We should be all tolerate of each others differences. Obviously a person who's not well versed and travelled. How can society move on when we have people who think that it's reasonable to offend people who are just enjoying their vacation. White privileges allows one to laugh, turn a blind eye or to offer a rationale for their inherent racism. Being White I can only apologise and say that the majority of educated White people just want to live in peace and unity. Should be ashamed. Schools visits! How do teachers explain gollywogs in todays society as being acceptable.
