I visited by myself as my work site was just down Micklegate and I wanted a coffee. The barista was lovely and friendly which makes the experience so much better. I had a latte (£2.60). The latte art was beautifully done and the coffee tasted great. I’d had a takeaway iced coffee the day before which was also lovely. The shop itself is small with only a few tables, but there is also seating outside.

Lovely cafe, albeit small with I think 4 or 5 tables. We had coffee and cake, both of which were great. There was a short menu of varied lunch dishes which sounded tempting at around £8 ish. Very pleasant lady, Gillian, behind the counter, took a moment to politely pass the time of day which was welcomed.

Excellent little coffee shop/cafe with lovely staff and very reasonably priced sandwiches. My partner had the Halloumi and rocket sandwich and I had a brie panini which they adapted for me being a veggie! Both came stacked with salad coleslaw and crisps which we couldn’t finish! The choice of home made cakes was brill too so we just had to bring 2 slices home instead!

Second visit in 3 years and still great. The 74 full English is as close to perfection as is possible with each item perfectly prepared. Great coffee too. My wife had the chicken and avo salad which she relished, only plagued by a number of hard avo slices, which was a pity but there was plenty of it so not too much of a problem. Keep up the great service and see you next year!

Vvv disappointing. Am a local won't be visiting again. Coffee ok. Guy who served us had no charisma at all. My son who has a dairy allergy (will vomit on the spot) could only have a bag of popcorn .... Mmmm at least one item made with a non dairy alternative would be nice .... I had the misfortune of ordering a scone - AWFUL - sooooo dry it had to be st least a day old if not more.

Unfortunately I have to agree with the last review. We visited this morning for breakfast after a recommendation from a local. The tables were far to small for the 3 of us and we had to use a chair for the tea pots as there was no room on the table for them. The food was really nice and very well cooked though. The guy who served us had absolutely no personality whatsoever and seemed like he did not want to be there......extremely miserable! We weren't asked once if everything was okay with the meal. The guy on the hotel reception was really friendly though! We visit York often but this is one cafe we won't be visiting again.

We were staying in the apartments attached to a Cafe 74 and decided to have breakfast there. All we wanted were 2 lattes and a round of toast and marmalade, our coffees came reasonably quick but we then had a 15 min wait for our toast, I wouldn't mind but there was only one other customer in the place at the time and when it finally did arrive it wasn't even toasted properly in fact it was as white as when it went in, I ask if they could put it through the toaster again but waited an age and then got hard toast, the waitress really didn't seem 'with it'

Been twice this week and whilst the food is nice the service is not great. First visit it was empty but waited 10 mins for someone to take order and had to ask for table to be cleaned. Second visit my table was full of dirty plates as was every table but they were only cleared by the customer or staff after they sat down and even then none were wiped down! It only has 4 tables - staff need training as its only a small thing to sort but not great

Visited with a friend for a birthday treat, bought the Full Monty Afternoon Tea on a livingsocial deal for £10, omg what a bargain! Drinks we had alone would cost £5 in a cafe - pot of tea and a hot chocolate with a massive service of cream and maltesers on top! Then - 4 mini sandwiches each, (salmon and cream cheese /ham and cheese - so tasty!) a large scone with butter/cream/jam/ slice of rocky road and a slice of blueberry and lemon cake with strawberries, pure indulgence! Great price, delicious food and drinks, warm and welcoming staff in a small but delightful cafe! Will definitely be back!

We had an afternoon tea in this café yesterday, although we booked it for lunchtime which was perfect. The sandwiches were lovely and fresh and very filling. We had ham and cheese and salmon and watercress. The ham, cheese and salmon were all freshly sliced and not processed. We had a giant scone each and were supplied with strawberry jam, strawberries, butter and clotted cream for them. We had the choice of a large tray-bake each which we couldn't manage so they were boxed up for us to take away. There was a large choice of drinks we could have had, but we opted for the tea which came with leaf tea in two separate teapots and the offer of more water if we needed it. The service was very good, quick and friendly. We had a voucher from Living Social but it would also be very good value at the full price.

I often go for afternoon tea with my Mum, using Living Social vouchers. This is the best i've had yet. The sandwiches were delicious and the scones were really soft and crumbly. The cakes were lovely and as there is so much, they give you a box to take home anything that doesn't get eaten. The staff are really helpful and friendly and even gave us a voucher for 10% off our next visit. Even if you don't have a voucher, the afternoon tea cost is very good for what you get.

My partner and I and our two young boys aged 2 and 5 were in York for the day and I picked up a Livingsocial deal for afternoon tea for us all. I expected fairly basic sandwiches some half decent scones and some cake, to keep us going on our travels. How wrong I was - the sandwiches were freshly made there and then with wedges of thick Yorkshire ham and a delicious Wensleydale cheese, and smoked salmon that melted in your mouth - I had to stop myself from eating them so there was room for the cake. And what cake! There were 3 different types of traybake which were hands down the best I have ever eaten - gooey caramel on millionaire's shortbread, generous proper jam in the bakewell and the perfect chocolate brownie - all home made locally apparently. The scones were delicious too and came with plenty of jam and cream, always a gripe when not enough is provided but no issue here. Much as we tried to polish it all off, we weren't even close but that was no problem, they were happy to box it up for us so we could take away. The manageress was so helpful, seating us at low tables in the window and giving the kids a couple of little toys to play with. Nothing was too much trouble and we really felt looked after. It is a small cafe but in a convenient spot just out of the hustle and bustle and we felt the food and the welcome was truly special and worth the detour. Of course they did know we were coming but I got the impression they really want to get and keep regular customers and I would highly recommend it.

I work just down the road from Cafe 74 and had a couple of lunches from there when it first opened but wasn't impressed at all so brought my own lunches in. 3 weeks ago my daughter called in where I work and she brought me a Smoked Salmon Salad Box from Cafe 74 as a treat for my lunch. She had Ham, Cheese and Tomato Panini which came with a lovely, fresh looking salad garnish. I try not to eat bread but had a bite from her Panini and it was just soooooo tasty. My Smoked Salmon Salad Box was just so fresh and definitely was made to order as it didn't come stone cold out of a fridge. There was a generous and just right portion of smoked salmon, mixed leaves, red peppers, tomatoes and onion and it was seasoned with a very light, tasty vinaigrette. Not too much, not too oily, not too heavy..... Just perfect.

Yes, the coffee is good and strong, but NO you don't get a nice little chocolate any more. I was told that that was just a promotional thing when the cafe first opened. There are sandwiches, littles quiches, various croissant-type things and cakes. It's not cheap. The high chairs are comfy when you manage to clamber onto them. If busy the place is very cramped. The music is too loud and not nice. There are more relaxing places to be near here.

This café is on attractive Micklegate, the street that climbs up from the River Ouse to Micklegate Bar. It’s part of the Lawrance serviced apartments complex but is open to the general public. It’s quite stylish but rather small and cramped. There are two long, high tables with high leather chairs on either side. It feels a bit like being at the dentist’s or the barber's. The cappuccino is very good and strong. They have skimmed milk. And you get a chocolate. It’s not cheap, though - £2.40 for the smaller size. There are a few snacks and some yummy-looking cakes.
