Byways in Scarborough

Food was superb (as usual), the service was excellent, they checked we were OK a couple of times and allowed us a break between courses, the waitress could not have been better, I wish I could remember her name (although I wish I could remember my own name some days...) the only problem was, when I went to pay at the bar, they tried to overcharge me by £10 and then argued with me when I explained what I thought was wrong. Olivia called the manager over and he just arbitrarily knocked the £10 off with out so much as a discussion. Olivia did at least apologise for the "mix-up" in the end. I suspect (and HOPE) it was a Green King cock-up and not a scam.

We had Sunday Evening meal at this venue and it was to say horrible. We had the Turkey roast where the turkey was from a turkey style loaf cut for sandwiches, and tasted like ? . The lumpy known by other names as gravy was shameful. The noise coming from the kitchen sounded like the male cook and staff where having a party ! Only a week prior we had the same meal at the Sword Dancer which is another Hungry Horse brand in Sheffield and the food was delicious and real turkey breast pieces. I am an advocate for Hungry Horse but the Byways at Crossgates Scarborough is harmful to the brand . From a seasoned world traveler.

I have been a loyal customer of Byways Scarborough, hoping for improvement, especially since it's convenient for my family. However, the quality has consistently fallen short of expectations. The steak hasn't been cooked to my liking (I prefer medium-rare), often being tough and chewy. My children's meals are frequently cold and bland. This morning, our breakfasts included fatty bacon and overcooked eggs, which were far from satisfactory. While today's staff were polite and welcoming, we've unfortunately encountered unfriendly staff members on previous occasions. Although the food arrived promptly, this was likely due to the restaurant's lack of customers. I continue to give Byways Scarborough a chance, but I consistently leave feeling unsatisfied, hungry, and disappointed with the value for money.

I visit most Wednesdays for the quiz and occasionally on a Saturday for something to eat. The young staff there are always friendly, good beer and good food. What more can I say!

Had my arm bent around my back to attend the Byways so my sons could watch the football. Once in, the staff could not have been more helpful and friendly. We all enjoyed our meals, even if the football result didn't go the right way for my sons. Will definitely call in again.

What a lovely place to visit. Also a lovely meal and a few drinks. I recommend this friendly pub.

We were just 2 on this occasion and were served by Erin and Steven. Very pleasant and efficient young people they are too. My husband had steak pie, and I had chicken new yorker, off the cheap and cheerfull menu. Absolutely delicious. We are regulars now, although we don't live in Seamer. Thank you very much, see you on Wednesday. X x x

Excellent service ,food decent quality for resonanable priced

Went in fairly late around 8 for a meal with our three kids after a long day out, food was actually pretty decent and well presented. Friendly serving staff and the place was fairly quiet.

The food and service were excellent. The behaviour of children was shocking even up until around 9 pm which could easily have spoilt our meal but fortunately we found a table as far away from them as possible. There was also an adult in the company of children who seemed extremely intoxicated.

Overall it was okay. There were some issues with food and the Coca Cola syrup had run out on some of our drinks. Steven sorted out the drinks well and Jasmine bless her did a great job in helping with food issues. The food was adequate. Some food was really nice some was just okay. The front of house team did a great job in accommodating us well. It was just such a shame about the food being wrong or just bad.

All staff were great, helpful and served us with a smile. Food was good and drinks were great. Very good value for money and very good service :)

Came here with family . Very nice staff, friendly ,pleasant nice good service and food . The only thing that spoilt here was a table with one man continually using the f word loudly non stop which my family could here ,so extremely unpleasant . F ing this f ing that f ing everthing …so the experience was unpleasant . We never reported this but I won’t be going again here because of this type of clientele . Been here before and never had this experience . My nine year old child was shocked . Won’t be going again because of this

We took our two grandsons for a meal, all of the staff were very polite and the food was very good value for money. The boys enjoyed their candymania deserts which were the highlight of the visit

We have been here for a long weekend seeing family and we have been here every night! A large selection of food that has something for everyone, absolutely lovely meals with generous portions, all served at the same time and lovely and hot. The staff (Erin, Bailey and Jack) were very friendly and polite and were happy to accommodate a couple of small requests we had. We will be back every time we visit Seamer!

Friendly bar, always made welcome by excellent bar staff. Very good place to watch sporting events, with numerous tv screens situated within the premises.

First time we have been back in a while as we were regulars and we found the food to have been very sub par. Came today staff were lovely and polite Steven and Jas but staff have never been the issue it’s always been the inconsistency of the food. Food today was very well presented hot and tasty. Very rude light blonde girl behind the bar tonight was going to order food but ended up finishing a drink and leaving in tears . It's not acceptable for a young girl to be working behind a bar to get jealous and then be rude because I spoke to who I can only assume was her boyfriend or wanted to be her boyfriend. Very unprofessional and unpleasant young girl

Called in on the spur of the moment and decided to have something to eat. Food was very tasty, hot and well presented. Service was spot on, atmosphere pleasant and unrushed.. think we timed it just right 4pm. If you're in the area give it a try, I don't think you will be disappointed.

Always a treat. It’s a busy pub with lots of nice areas to sit. A play area for the kids, family friendly. Lots of TV screens. A great sunny beer garden. It’s pleasant pub grub.

Not open on advertised Sunday opening hours, wasted a trip on Sunday morning.

Food excellent quick service thank you chefs Dylan and Chris and very pleasant server Ella and Katie. This is our favourite place too eat great value for money.

We are quite new to the area and have been here a few times now. Staff are friendly and helpful and the food is cooked to your liking. The only problem we've had each time we were in were one or two flies which were getting quite annoying.

Always found Byways friendly Staff and Entertainment on an Evening during the week ie quiz night Wednesday then on weekends sports events. The breakfasts are very good and filling and set up for the day all within a very reasonable price too I've used the Byways as my local now for coming over a yr and will continue to do so 😄

Popped in for a quick meal for lunch with my wife. Wasn’t expecting much as it’s a hungry horse. They are all the same in my opinion cheap and cheerful. First off I think the menu is deliberately confusing with “offer”. Once we’d choosen what we were having after several confusing moments Of no you can’t have that, with that, that doesn’t come with that And that offer won’t apply to the other. We choose our meals. Now based on what they had in kitchen, not what we wanted. We then asked for drinks with our meal (two pints of coke) we were told. We don’t do pints of coke just standard glasses which for the record was pint sized anyway. It was then fill for bottom to top in ice. I quickly asked for no ice please. Up to this point again wasn’t expecting much as it’s just a hungry horse Pub. But then because we asked for no ice the glasses were only filled to the halfway point. Very petty, but we didn’t argue the point it was clear it was done intentionally because we’d asked for no ice. The mad thing is we were willing to pay pint prices for the coke as we just wanted a big glass each. Come to think of it though at almost £4 a glass it wasn’t far away from a price of a pint anyway. The meal was a burger sizzler combo (meant to be a burger, wings and rump steak) and tandoori chicken Sizzler special. Neither meal was a sizzler because they didn’t have sizzler plates but We were told this before the order was placed and went ahead anyway. At this point we just wanted to be feed and to go. God do I now retreat that choice! The food arrived after our half pint, pints. It was clear straight away the quality was poor even for a hungry horse. The rump steak was asked to be served medium, it was well done and very tough. So tough that I might have re-sharpened one of there knives trying to cut through the thing. I will say though it would be hard for to take a cheap cut like a Frying steak Call it rump I’m trying to cook it the same. Everything else on the plate was either microwaved to death or deep-fried. The tandoori “special” was served with one tortilla wrap cut into quarters to fill the plate. The chicken was fairly inedible And the salad that filled the rest of the plate looked like he had been sat out for days under a hot plate. we also asked/paid for a small portion of chips which was missed with the main meal. When we asked about that we was challenged like that we were trying it on for a free plate of chips. I don’t know what type of people they normally encounter there but I’m quite willing to pay my way for what I want. Without being made to feel like I’m trying to cheat the system and get something for free or cheaper. I don’t normally complain or leave a bad review because we can all have bad days and it was one visit and our first time eating at the place. If we had a bad experience I’d be more inclined to just not go back however I’ve been super poorly since eating there, I’ve been up all night doubled over in pain and you can guess what the rest of symptoms were. Stupidly when we first walked in yesterday the first thing we spotted was a Christmas Day menu which we picked up to consider booking. It’s safe to say we now won’t be due to poor service, bad attitude towards customer, really poor food with a possibility of a side Help of food poisoning. Note below, we didn’t complain on the day as I’ve already stated why. However, after experiencing the physical symptoms of food poisoning since eating at the byways I feel like I have to for the safety of others.

Just come home from lunch at the Byways, we both had full monty mixed grills, both was cooked as requested, could not fault them , nice runny egg on top , what a lovely meal, Thank you all , will, be back soon.

Very friendly staff and good food. They had a wide range of food which isn't always a good thing as sometimes it means the food isn't as good as it could be but in this case it was really good.

Unfortunately, our recent visit to The Byways left us disappointed. Ordered the rump steak, but it was so tough that I ended up bringing it home for the dog—and even she struggled with it! The sides of chips and peas were average at best, and the onion rings lacked any real flavour. While the presentation was decent, the quality of the meal simply didn’t meet expectations. The steak, which should be a highlight, was particularly underwhelming. Overall, it wasn’t the enjoyable dining experience we’d hoped for.

Food was delicious- service was excellent- staff were friendly and attentive. Good value and good atmosphere. Would recommend 100%

Went in with family while away. Had 2 big dogs which were welcomed. Service was spot on and friendly. Food was hot, and quicker than most places to say there was 9 of us. Would definitely recommend especially with furry friends.

The main was good, what you would expect. The desert turned up the first time missing half of it, so spoke to the person on the bar who took it back to be resolved. I can only assume the only sever must of got told to do things properly as it got put on the table rougher than the first time with a angered "there you go. Will still go back again. My suggestion is get more staff so there not rushing on there own 1 bar person and 1 server. Really!!

Disappointing. Sat in the bar under the TV, promised when we sat down they would turn it down but they didn't. When prompted they changed the channel to one that was louder. Meal took nearly an hour to be served, then they just brought part of it despite me selecting it to be served together. Veggie lasagna was unpleasant, garlic bread quoted as being ciabatta wasn't, it was like those slices you get at Iceland, 10 for £1 but they charged over £3 for 2. Overall food was uninspiring.

Booked in advance and was placed on a table under a TV making it difficult to talk. We asked for the volume to be lowered all that happens was the channel changed to a channel where the sound was louder. Ordered via the Ap drinks arrived promptly but the food took fifty minutes to arrive. Food was god but no check back to ensure it was. Shame it was a disappointing start to our holiday.

Steve served us. The food was amazing for the price. Able to use Tesco vouchers. Had the candymania to share. It was amazeballs!! Food came really quick. Great value 👍👍👍

We visited for lunch today. 25th of August I can honestly say how disappointed we both with the meal run out of roast beef no lime cordial no sage onion stuffing in the roast turkey and only 2 bits of meat instead of 3 which was shown on the menu my veggie pie was soggy so I think it had been reheated in microwave mashed potato tasted as thou it was in a packet we had to wait over 35mins for food to arrive the only good thing was the drinks staff seemed stressed I had a voucher that a friend had given me that paid a bit towards it then was told by the young girl that brought the meal we had to pick knives and forks from the condiment station we should have been told by bar staff about that.

Had a terrible experience when we visited this week, myself ,partner and little girl were down visiting family and we all decided to go here for dinner. There was 4 adults and 2 children This was a terrible decision as all the food came out cold and way overcooked. When the server brought out my little girls food she dropped some on the floor as she approached the table and she never apologized or offered to get more she just handed us the plate and walked away. A dog at another table ended up eating it and we had to ask another server about getting more food. The original server who dropped the food had a terrible attitude and the whole experience was not enjoyable, complete waste of money as we couldn't even finish our meals.

Ordered lasagne along with other meals and cheesy garlic bread as extra. The lasagne was lacking cheese sauce on top and was just a lasagne sheet. Cheesy garlic bread was burnt. Then I found a hair in my food. This was rectified by fresh lasagne. I really did not enjoy the meal. No apology just told they would change the meal and bring out fresh. 2 minutes later fresh lasagne

Went on a Monday grill night would have liked to have a mixed grill but they were sold out so I had the last rump steak it was okay and the service was good but what's the point of a grill night with no stock

The meat was so dry and not enough food on the plate. Part from that its was a nice atmosphere.

Waited for an hour for rubbish food in a scruffy bar with miserable staff! Only came as we could use Tesco vouchers, but then you get ripped off as all the deals get cancelled. A glass of squash for the kids was £2.50, not sure how that can be justified! So much for a quick, cheap tea out!

I'm sure the food is great, but we haven't seen any for 1.5 hours so we don't know. Getting a bit peckish now....

My family of 5 enjoyed a late lunch here we were well attended to and they apologised for our wait but they did let us know they were a wee bit behind and ohh boy it was worth the wait delicious not our first time here and certainly not our last x

The food was slow service but nice,it took 40 minutes for our starters to come and then another 20 minutes after our starters for our mains can't complain about the 20 minute wait on the mains but the 40 minute wait is bad

Food was fantastic but from time of ordering to actually receiving your food was very slow, I ordered a starter which came quick but waited 30mins after starter came for main course. When ordered drinks there was 4 people waiting and only 1 person behind bar so again service was slow.

I hate and despise giving a bad review. I am going to be positive! 4 of us visited a year ago, we walked away not to plussed. Yes, they were busy. Yes, there was a wait for a table, and then a wait for food. We weren't impressed with our meals. So, why return, we are not in the area often. We do not really know the area. So, give it a go. 4 of us walk in, find a table, beers bought menu read. Pleasant welcome at the bar (+'ve) Asked about Blue light card informed on "Specials" could actually cost more (+'ve) table number noted food ordered. Wait ensues, Two meals arrived, they are "X"... nope, one was "X" t'other was "Y" (-'ve) ....big deal I here you say. Two lots of onion rings were ordered, and when they arrived, one lot was placed on the table, the other spilt over the table, the waitress picking them up, placing them back in the bowl. I picked the bowl up and gave them back to her, saying, "I hope that you are going to replace them? " I went on a hunt for cutlery, at the "condiment station " there was a huge hole. The cutlery tray was on an adjacent table, knives, no folks.(-'ve)I asked a waitress for some folks, "yes I will get some" Returning to our table, the waitress had just arrived, throwing two plates of Garlic bread nearly on the table. One landing on the table, the other on the floor(-'ve) we had not ordered Garlic bread, we were the wrong table (-'ve) The other two meals had arrived, we sat and waited.(-'ve) Five minutes feels like half an hour. We went on the hunt for forks (-'ve) Ten minutes feels like hours, my friend went in the kitchen.(-'ve) I went to the Bar asking for the Manager. (-'ve) We returned to the table, waiting for folks.(-'ve) The forks arrived( +'ve) the food is cold (-'ve) The manager arrived (5minutes) We were given a full refund (+'ve with bonus) When I went to bar to have the refund put on my card the Manager was once again full of apologies (+'ve) and gave me a voucher for a round of drinks (+'ve) I thank the manager for his actions unreservedly Thank You. But I'm afraid I seriously think that we will not return.

We went with our son and his 2 daughters Food was poor I had a burger that was ok but chips were cold Son ordered the gammon and it was ok it was supposed to have a fried egg on top but didn’t Kids meals were ok Drinks good I had thought there was steak pie but couldn’t see anything on menu

Been here today for our family meal and the food and service was great lovely pub and staff definitely will be returning again give it a try you will not be disappointed

Had a day out today at the Byways with college's of many years .I must say had a great day ,food was lovely service was great .Good atmosphere could not do enough for us .many thanks .

Lovely staff , food terrible. Peppers and onions burnt into the sizzle plate, couldn't scrape off. Barely any mince in lasagne all pasta and sauce

Steak night and told on ordering couldn't order anything off the grill after spending 5 minutes looking at the menu, no sign or staff informing customers on arrival

First visit for a while..Stood where directed waiting to be seated. Eventually gave up and went to grab a table.....Ordered on the app,then found had to go to the counter but relatively painless...Ordered 3 big chicken plates and a burger..,2 chickens delivered noticeable 1 less chip....eventually delivered 3 even less chip...Commented to the waitress the 3 different quantities...she smile and said she would do nothing about it ....The place quietened down ....watched the quality of table cleaning...noticeable after wiping cutlery to find 4 clean sets...Quantity and quality of staff let the place down

In Scarborough on business. Found this cracking pub , ate here twice for my evening meal . Mixed Grill was the business, lots of pubs sacrifice quantity for quality, this had both ! , the Guinness was pretty good too ! Second night I took the fish and chips , cracking meal , would highly recommend! Staff were great , good to see service with a smile and nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely recommend and will be back ! 10/10

First time visiting the byways! Can't believe how much I enjoyed the food. Had the chicken new yorker, I'm off back tomorrow. Steven who served us was really nice. And big shout out to the chef Charlie 😋

Poor .... came from Bridlington for a breakfast on Sunday morning arrived at 9 oclock to be turned away as they was doing staff training I checked Facebook and there Website before we left and no mention off the opening time being 11.30 today , the Guy told us they had put it on there social media which was a complete lie ...

Absolutely shocking service staff rude as anything when asked what’s in the kids rice changed from carrots to swede then just stormed off The kids brownie is just a cheap frozen Swiss roll that’s frozen and tastes absolutely shocking Main course portions are small and for a carvery place didn’t have any meet what the hell

Byways is always a safe shout for the family. Plenty of choice and the food is always decent. Had great service from Erin and Dylan in the past.

We went to the byways for dinner as a family of 9 and the service was brilliant and erin was smiling and very helpful the food was great and cooked by dylan the card said.
