Our usual trip to Whitby for the New Year and Abbey Wharf for refreshments and fish and chips. As always very warm welcoming and pleasant helpful staff. We visit with our small dog who lies on the floor we once allowed her to sit on the seat at the side of me rightly so a member of staff asked if she could go on the floor as dogs are not allowed on seats. Yesterday a lady was asked to take her dog off the seat, today dogs sitting on seats. What is good for one should be the same for everybody, not a moan just an opinion.

Completely contrasting meals today. Two scampi and chips - “best scampi we have ever had”. Chicken nuggets kids meal supposedly suitable for children up to 14 but tiny portion so not the case - get more in a happy meal. Really let down by the gluten free cod. Really really greasy - oil poured out of it when I cut into it and was completely tasteless which might be expected of gluten free food ten years ago but not in 2024. The fish was so oily I had to put it on my napkin which was saturated in no time. Not sure I would recommend this as a gluten free destination as a result.

We pre booked a table of 4 and was shown to our table up stairs. We all decided to have a lite bite, presuming they were starters, and a main course. We were told that they don’t do starters and it would all come out together. We asked if we could order the lite bites and then order main course, still a sharp no. We decided to order it all regardless. When it arrived, the lite bites appeared only to be starter size any way, so not sure of their serving method. I ordered a pot of muscles for main course, which were not served in what I would say a pot is, but just a regular soup bowl. Through out us dining, we had no one come and ask if everything was ok, which surely is hospitality standard? The food we had I would say was average and service could do with some TLC. I would probably visit again as the venue is great and lively atmosphere.

Mainly used as a part venue in the evenings of festivals in Whitby, I can’t say anything about the food I’ve never eaten here the staff did however look confused when a friend asked what stout they had on and after much staff discussion it was decided they had none until my friend looked at the various pumps on tap and saw at least two! That said £18 for three drinks is a bit much even if it’s a captive audience.

Don’t let the few poor reviews put you off visiting. We booked very last minute, to dine there last Monday evening. I then checked the reviews and was dubious. I’m so glad we ignored the poor reviews and went, as we had the most delicious meal - the fish pie was the best I have tasted and my husband also loved his haddock morney. Washed down with a Peach Bellini and refreshing pint. (You can even pour your own). It’s a large and modern restaurant with lovely views over the river and great music playing. Absolutely awful. We went here on supposed good reviews. It was hard to get seated for 9 of us but we squashed into a table borrowing chairs from elsewhere. The staff wasn't interested in seating us as the place is packed and you can take it or leave it. They do work hard. Whilst our meals all came up around the same time they were barely Luke warm (which tells me not enough waiting staff) I don't like cold food but didn't send it all back as the hassle to get seated in the first place had an adverse affect on the nice lunch it should have been. The fish was so minimal in the batter (I should have had fish fingers had they had some! And the last 3 Scampi out of its little dish were swimming in oil that I took, the (not quite an inch) tiny bit of meat out of the batter save drinking the oil. I had saved for this for months to take my adult kids out to lunch in Whitby a total waste of money for what it was - but kept my mouth shut so as not to spoil the day!

Her excuse was she apparently watched her make it and knew it was made right! They refused to try it but still said there was nothing wrong with it?! My wife and I love Whitby. It's been one of our favourite places for decades. Probably because it's on the other side of the bridge from where we arrive, we've visited the Abbey Wharf on very few occasions. There's so many good Fish & Chip places, we've usually eaten before we reach AW, which is a shame really because when we have climbed the stairs, it's always been a pleasurable experience. Having eaten (not successfully), we fancied a coffee with a view and ascended the stairs and made our way to the bar in AW. I didn't notice whether the guy who served us was wearing a name tag, so I didn't catch his name. I think I may recognise him being a large chap with long hair and a sizeable beard and, more importantly, an excellent sense of humour. Whilst I 'bantered' with the Viking behind the bar, my wife found a table outside with a great view of the harbour. I was very pleasantly surprised at the cost, £5.20 for two generous white Americano's with a free biscuit. Excellent value, excellent view and excellent service. I just need to devise a route to arrive at AW via another direction to eliminate food competitors so I can sample their F& C's next time.

Didn't eat too busy, tried on 2 separate occasions, very lucky to even get a table to have a drink.

Dogs are allowed Two cask ales on tap, probably 3 sometimes. They had space on a busy Friday night All very efficient Not fine dining, but certainly providing a valuable service. Yes we would go back, three kids and a dog, so suited us well. But not a quiet romantic setting.

Sunday lunch was delicious. New Years Eve party was really great. We have not stayed in the hotel rooms.

Food was nice, however very unclear where you are meant to go. One member of staff in front, and she was serving somebody at one till while I waited. Then she skipped over me and went to the group of old ladies who had come in after and waited elsewhere! Poor range of stock although what I had was nice enough. Just a shame the customer service is definitely lacking!
