Buoy and Oyster in Thanet

I came looking for a nice drink and some oysters. Something nice for early evening. I chose well. They were busy and I hadn’t booked but they were really helpful in finding me a space in their schedule and it was perfect. The Maldon oysters were delicious and just what I was after thanks to the knowledgeable young lady who put up with all my questions. The glass of local white wine wasn’t bad either.

Perfect venue to confirm that Margate is truly moving upmarket. You would be delighted to discover this place in London, let alone the east coast of Kent! The food was delicious, absolutely couldn’t fault it - we shared starters of smoked salmon and the mixed tomatoes, both very tasty. I had the sea bream main course and my partner had the pork chop. Again the flavours were perfect. We chose a local Kent wine which perhaps was our only gripe, it was a little sharp. The decor and ambiance of the restaurant is wonderful and we were sat by a window ( bit windy outside that evening for our liking but you can dine on the balcony) with the most amazing view of a sunset over the massive beach and sea. Perfect. Stan, our waiter, was very pleasant and on the ball. All in all, absolutely no complaints! Fantastic

Visited today 22nd August with my daughter for the first time for a lunchtime meal. Have been intending to visit after reading the positive reviews, and was not disappointed. Both had a fabulous meal and will certainly make a return visit. Thanks to the attentive staff and of course the chefs.

Beautiful day to sit on the terrace overlooking the beach. The food was reasonably priced considering the food quality. Service was friendly.

such a lovely venue! had dinner on the terrace and had a beautiful view of the sunset over the ocean. in the upper price range but absolutely worth it. amazing staff, unfortunately forgot to get the name of our waiter but he was absolutely wonderful! highly recommend the house brand wine - even got a bottle to take home! bloody mary shots with oysters were great!! and food wise, the prawn pappardelle and the buoy bowl were delicious!! for dessert, we had the affogato with a serving dessert wine - great for sharing after such a satisfying meal. 10/10 - will be coming back to margate just for this restaurant <3

The maitre d is charm ,personified(and he's from the Elephant and Castle,yes!!)Wonderful setting,sitting overlooking beach.I had the Margate Mess(sorbet,blue candyfloss,chocolate discs,pannecotta,etc),chai latte...husband had ice-cream (very creamy),great coffee. Waiter was handsome and very,very articulate(in a good way) Go and enjoy.,more reasonable than 42 next door. Elevates that part of Margare.

Booked a table for 5.30pm . Arrived on time & was able to sit by the window overlooking the beach which was lovely. It was my husband’s birthday & going to DL for a gig . Ordered drinks ( bottle of wine & beer)then after about 20 mins we got a waitress’s attention to order food . She told us “we weren’t her table “ but took our order regardless having ordered starters & main at the same time . Our starters came & went . So did 3 or 4 other tables , having had their whole entire meal , before we’d even had our mains . We asked the waitress who took our order , if she could find out how long our food would be , she said “ she’d find out”… she never came back !, We then chatted to another waitress, who seemed distressed as it was only her second shift & said it was her fault we hadn’t got our food … something to do with her not telling the kitchen that we’d finished our starters 🤷🏻‍♀️.. but She didn’t take our order !!!!!!!!!!!! The girl that did , Grace I think her name was ,continued to walk passed us & ignore us without any answers to when our food would arrive. By this time our wine we got to have with our food had gone , 1.5 hours later our main arrived , with no apologies or even looked like they were bothered. Leaving a new staff member to deal with the situation the way you did was disgusting .. Where is your team spirit ??? I own a kitchen & Alehouse & for No one from management to acknowledge the situation or even come & let us know about our food , is shocking 😳… in the end the lovely new waitress Lilly had words with her manager & we got 10% off our bill for the long wait .. however due to lack of communication with more senior members of staff we won’t be coming back .

It's a really great seafood restaurant with the most fantastic mussles and fat chips. It's 2hat these Thanet sea side towns have been crying for.

We were surprised at the Buoy and Oyster walking in by chance in our visit to Margate. All food was delicious and the atmosphere was great. Lauren was a great server, very friendly and attentive at all times. We'll be back! Next time we'll try for the terrace that has a lovely view of the beach.

Service was good but after eating the crab special I have experienced severe food poisoning which has necessitated several days off of work.

Had the cold platter, prawn were tiny but sweet

We visited for lunch last Saturday and were thoroughly impressed. The food was outstanding, especially the whole crab, which was incredibly fresh. The atmosphere was great and the staff were friendly, particularly the bearded waiter. Highly recommend!

Another great meal at The Buoy and Oyster. We visit every summer. Delicious food and amazing wine. We received really great service from our waiter, Izzy. The weather wasn't what we'd hoped, so this is the first time we've not been sit out on the terrace and although everything else was perfect, we didn't enjoy sitting on the high stalls. Hopefully next summer the rain will hold off and we'll be back on the terrace.

Can't say anything else other than our meal was perfect. From the beautiful view of the sunset, to the exceptional service, to the unbelievable quality of the seafood..... this was a meal to remember for the ages. It was a special occasion with family I don't get to see so often and B&O came through. Thanks.

Loved our meal, my boyfriend gave it the highest rating he’s ever given anywhere, a whopping 9.7!! Said it was one of the best meals he’s ever had. Emily our server was so lovely as well, excellent experience!

A fabulous restaurant. We came for dinner and there were so many dishes on the menu we wanted to try that we popped back for their light lunch menu the next day! Delicious.

Recommended by Trip Advisor and chose it because we were in the area. Lovely staff, very accommodating, helpful, friendly and professional. Food was amazing, we wish it was around the corner from our home in London, we would eat here every week. 10/10 for us.

Been looking forward to eating here for a while, lovely view over Margate beach, lovely starters, for mains I ordered the bream and my husband had ordered the wild halibut. Mine was lovely unfortunately my husband's fish was raw and cold, very disappointing for a £26 dish. Will not be returning, big shame.

Great fresh fish of the day (skate wing) and delicious starters (prawn + squid). Service attentive and polite, atmosphere was great with it being a full restaurant.

Truly not worth the reviews nor money. Perhaps I went on a bad night, but I was left wishing I had gone to a fish and chips takeaway instead. The only thing I enjoyed here was the margaritas.

What a wonderful restaurant. I had the most wonderful gluten-free fish and chips. Usually, when it comes to desserts, there's nothing gluten-free apart from ice cream. Imagine my surprise that all of their desserts were gluten-free! I choose the millionaires shortbread with an Italian meringue. OMG it was sooo lovely. I would definitely recommend the restaurant, the food and the wonderful service.

Excellent meal here with brilliant service and very reasonable prices. Dishes were flavoursome, fresh and well presented - we ate late and chose light options but there was plenty of variety for a heartier meal. Service was brilliant, friendly and attentive. Price was very reasonable especially considering other restaurants in the vicinity where you get a similar quality of food. Only downside was it was a little quiet but probably because we were there on a rainy Monday outside of holiday season.

Went with two friends. Food arrived suspiciously quickly. My friends' meals were adequate but nothing special. Mine, the fish and chips, was clearly reheated, rubbery and dried out. This is the second time I have had a very poor and overpriced meal there but have had good meals there in the past. Will not be taking people there again.

This place is amazing! 10/10. We had a selection of the small plates after a long walk on the beach, all the seafood was impeccable! Crab was perfectly cooked and the scallops were some of the largest I’ve ever had! Mussels were the winner though! Emily (our server) was spot on and super knowledgeable about where our food was sourced and also knew exactly which wines would pair with what we wanted to order. 10/10 service and the ambience was great as well! Cannot recommend more highly

This is a superb place to go for classic seafood with the a beautiful view over Margate Beach. I’ve been with family and I’ve been with friends. I’ve been at lunch and for dinner. Every time the service is wonderful, and the food is delicious. I would highly recommend a visit if you are in the area.

Locally sourced seafood restaurant with a view. We had the catch of the day, the fresh taste was definitely overpowered by the chili sauce that it came with. The chips here are amazing. Would recommend!

From the moment we walked in we were greeted with a friendly welcome. The restaurant has a modern and buzzy feel with a good lively atmosphere. We were seated on a high table with plenty of room and very comfortable seating. The menu has a good variety of seafood options, together with some meat dishes and caters for vegetarian and vegan requirements. I have severe food allergies to peanuts, tree nuts and lupin. Stan who served us put my mind at ease immediately, letting me know the chef is fabulous with allergies and that nothing would be a problem. The chef also gave me the nod and further reassured me that my allergies were no problem and that all food would be safe. As a result I enjoyed a variety of seafood dishes without the usual anxiety I have when eating out. Stan was very personable and took great care of us ensuring that the drinks kept flowing that that we had a great time! The food was absolutely stunning. I 100% recommend this Margate gem!

A nicely put together restaurant - good lighting, seating and decoration. The staff were attentive even though the place was busy. The food was good and everyone appeared to be having a nice time. Us included so don't take the rest of this as a negative - it's just my thoughts. I would agree with other reviews that the food was a little expensive for what it was. I am not a restaurateur and don't have visibility of the overheads so this may be unfair but it was my feeling. It might be that this is the place to come for a celebration, to acknowledge you were going somewhere for a good evening. Many people obviously were having a great evening. It's on a (the?) high street and parking is a couple of minutes down the road, no problems. I booked online, last dining reservation was at 9:30 pm but obviously the place stays open beyond that.

This was an outrageously fine meal and experience. From the moment we entered the restaurant everyone was so friendly and welcoming, walking past the open kitchen, the chefs were welcoming us and talking to the children. Such lovely staff, couldn't fault them. The food was wonderful, I had the halibut and the sauce was good enough to be bottled and sold on its own. My wife has the lobster Mac and cheese which was perfect. The chips were so fluffy and tasty and very chunky! Fries were available also. The children's menu was great and my children were very excited by it! I have posted a photo of it. A beautiful menu with great wine choices and a fantastic atmosphere. The best family meal that we've had in years, by far!

This was a visit on the back of an impromptu trip and what a find it was, the food was so good, local lager coupled with oysters that were the best I have ever had, the Chef is outstanding, well worth the visit, money well spent, lovely views outside as well. I should mention that I need wheelchair access everywhere I go, and it was easy to get a table comfortably, no other wheelchair facilities though FYI

Wow, what a beautiful restaurant! The food was fresh, tasty and well-presented - the cod and chips in particular was absolutely delicious 😋 The staff members were very friendly and helpful - particularly Issy, who was so very welcoming and attentive during our meal. We would definitely recommend and will return the next time we are in Margate.

We got a place at this restaurant on the day of attending which was fab. I’ve never been to Margate before, read online and emailed to reserve a place which was great, they replied straight away to confirm. The starters were good, I had scallops and my husband had oysters. For mains I was thinking of lobster pasta which I should have ordered - I went for catch of the day which was lemon sole, it was terrible. It absolutely stunk, of sulfur, I tried to convince myself it was the samphire, but it wasn’t, I took some of the fish and smelled it, it smelled very bad. I therefore couldn’t finish it, but our waiter was really brilliant. I am very British and after waitressing for 6 years, I know I should complain but I always feel very bad about doing so face to face. It was a nice place with a lovely vibe, but the food - very bad, would not recommend based on the smell of the fish.

A great family friendly restaurant serving excellent food. It was a good choice for a small family celebration of a special birthday. Complementary prosecco too. Good to see several families there before 6pm.

Went to Margate for the day and at the last minute asked for availability for a booking. Was kindly fitted in for a 75 minute window, but with kids that was fine. Amazing food, great service from the excellent Peter and everyone happy. Also amazing views of sunset. Definitely recommend.

We were a large group and received great service and lovely food! Everyone was very happy with their meals. The bloody mary was delicious. A few of us returned the next day for some more oysters and squid!

Lovely place, well run and well staffed, nothing was too much trouble. We visited on Mussel Wednesday, one of their theme days. Simply excellent mussels and clams, very reasonably priced. Fantastic sea view over Margate beach.

Walked in on a very busy Sunday night and luckily snagged a table! Service was great! Food was delicious and fresh! Definitely recommend! (Try the beer battered oyster! Yum!)

I had a wonderful meal to celebrate my birthday last Wednesday. We were welcomed in a friendly manner and shown to a perfectly positioned table near the window. As it was my birthday our daughter had arranged for us to have a complimentary drink on arrival I was also given a birthday card from the staff The service was very friendly and efficient. We had 3 delicious courses which we thoroughly enjoyed . We would love to return in the summer to enjoy the views from the terrace and try other things from the menu. I thoroughly recommend the Buoy and Oyster.

Very miserable female manager / staff member who rolled her eyes and laughed at us when we tried to order some oysters. Not friendly.

Really slow service. One front of house and one server. Had to ask for tap water 4 times and wait 25 minutes for a pint. Had cockles that were really gritty. I’ve prepared them myself many times and I’m sure these were not washed. Friend had lobster mac n cheese, it was shallow and over baked with no lobster to be found in it. It’s a premium priced restaurant but the service and quality let it down. Which is what you pay for…Was the 4th time going here. And won’t be returning.

Went a few years back and as good as ever. We had the shared platter at £24 a head and worth every penny. Doest look like enough when it first comes but it really fills you up. Lovely service and such a nice setting too....
