Absolutely a fabulous pie shop! We eventually made it, after flight mishaps! Not disappointed at all! Great choice of pies! Shared the sausage roll started, wow, devine! We both chose the beef and stilton with horseradish mash! Amazing! Served with fresh veggies too! So glad we are visiting, as our figures could not take these glorious pies, so many choices, all need sampling in my opinion’ 🤔😉😋🥧

We all 4 ordered pies and mash or chips and that’s what we got, pies were good my dessert was Luke warm at best with cold bits inside. Service was friendly and good, however the bill for smallish portions and a drink each came to nearly £140😵‍💫made worse by a service charge of Over £14 we were in and out in an hour and we even made the mistake of not noticing this and left a tip which had already been included certainly not good value for money!

The christmas menu we were sent wasn't being used, we booked for 7.30pm & were asked to arrive at 8pm due to staffing. There were only 3 tables seated when we arrived it wasn't busy. 16 of us in the cellar so had to sit separately was supposed to be a works party. no draft beer available, no wine glasses they gave some of us gin glasses. Food was but a £18 for a pie is steep. The staff came down several times around 10pm to say they were closing soon. The Grinch stole christmas & the reputation of this once great restaurant

Enjoyed a family meal in the rustic settings of the restaurant. The pies were very nice. Throughly recommend the Steak and Spitfire ale. However our visit was dented by the extreme greedy and ill thought out service charge. The service want great and I have never seen a charge applied in such a basic restaurant. I asked for the charge to be removed which was not a great place to be after what was a nice meal. Very poorly thought out.

Lunch was so good on our first day we returned for Supper the next day. Food and drink is amazing and service is impeccable. Stacey is an excellent hostess and all the staff are friendly and helpful. As you'd expect the pies are the star of the show but I'd also highly recommend the pork belly, melts in the mouth. If you're after something to takeout, the sausage rolls are amazing.

So disappointed. This used to be a fave place of mine to go eat that was a little bit special but reasonable. Unfortunately it is now neither a little bit special or reasonable. Portions are incredibly small. Four tiny heads of broccoli, a spoonful of carrots and a spoonful of red cabbage does not serve two! Pie tasted nice but again was very small. A lot of casing and not much substance/filling. Puddings were the worst. Sticky toffee pudding that was like a burnt treacle sponge. Told the waiter but no feedback/comments. Four spoonfuls of lukewarm lumpy custard as a side to the pudding. The cheeseboard was even sadder. Four pieces of cheese paired with 5 crackers, the tiniest portion of butter and a tiny spoon of chutney. No grapes, apple, etc. Staff were 'ok'. A blond waitress didn't seem to know the menu well and seemed annoyed when we asked questions. Lots of sighs, face like thunder and eye rolls. Katie however was the star of the night. However the worst part came when we got the bill to find a £12 service charge had been added. I don't mind tipping (in fact I think we should!) but I don't like it being added. When we asked the waiting staff if they got this money they said 'no it goes to the owners!' This is shocking behaviour. We promptly asked for the service charge to be removed and left cash for the wait staff in the hope the greedy owners don't get this! I wouldn't recommend and unfortunately I won't be back. No longer special - it is a pie shop but they need to change their prices to reflect this.

Not what we were expecting from what people rave about. Food was very school like with small portions for the money. Desserts were again small for the price and the custard was luke warm. I don't usually post reviews but first visit here having heard good reports. Staff were very polite and helpful. We both had pie and mash £16 each. The pies and mash were nice but came with such a small portion of (not great) veg which we then had to share. Pot of tea for two £6. Having complained about the veg portion size they did remove the service charge which I didn't even realise was being charged in the first place! So £38 for pie and mash twice including two teas. Maybe that's why it's called 'Steep' Hill?? Bit of a shame because it seems quite a nice little restaurant otherwise.

I have been here a few times but was most disappointed - I asked for steak and kidney pie - no kidney. The portions for the vegetables were minute. A heaped teaspoon of red cabbage, swede and carrot and 2 small broccoli florets for the two of us. When I queried it they said it was for 2. It was served on a dish smaller than a saucer.

This was our second visit. The first time, things weren’t great (slow service, cold food, incorrect bill) but we decided to give it another go a couple of months later. When we arrived, there were 3 people stood at the bar who ignored us. Having pre-booked, we let them know and were taken to our table. There were just 2 other tables of customers (each of 2 people) when we sat down. It then took a long time to get anyone’s attention to order. The first person took our drinks order only and brought two glasses of pop instead of the bottled drinks we ordered. In this time, the two tables left and two others filled up. They were served immediately, drinks brought and food order taken. 30 minutes later we asked another passing person to take our food order and were told they’d be right back with the iPad. After 45 minutes we gave up, paid for the drinks and left. At this point, there were still just two tables full, so 3 in total including us with 3 people serving. The person who took our payment apologised and said they were short staffed. It was all very disappointing and a bit odd. We won’t be back.

Lovely old premises in Lincoln. Whilst their speciality is home made pies there are other options. Great selection of fillings and whilst the usual suspects are there, they also offer something new to try- The pork, apple and black pudding pie was wonderful ! Their pastry is just the right thickness and nice and crisp. Served with firm vegetables, mash and peas. Efficient and friendly service as take away, delivery or now dining in again as covid restrictions are lifted.

Ive previously enjoyed visits to the restaurant so i was expecting good things from their takeaway service.I ordered my food around Friday lunchtime for collection at 6pm i ordered a pork black pud pie and a chicken and mushroom both with chips and veg. I was pleasantly surprised to get a phone call confirming my order not once but twice, so i felt reassured it would be correct. So i arrive at the restaurant to pick my food up at 6pm to be left waiting for another 20mins speaking to multiple members of staff to find out if it was nearly ready because i was the only person sat there and was no sign of deliveries leaving. After waiting the 20 minutes after my collection time i receive my food and the order is read out me as i have it handed to me. Needless to say i was shocked to get home and find that the sides of chips had been replaced by mash and the pork and black pudding pie had been replaced by a vegetarian spicy veg pie ( i feel sorry for the vegetarian that received my pie).I call the restaurant to explain what has happened and i get the owner on the phone who is very apologetic and says he will arrange a free meal and delivery for the following day, which i thank him for, and we arrange for it to be delivered for 6pm.Gets to 6.20pm the next day and still no food so i ring the restaurant to check that the driver hadn't got lost, to find out they hadn't got a clue about our food, so i ask to speak to the owner who is apologetic again and uses the excuse he is very tired and the message didn’t get relayed to his staff. So again he offers to delivery a free meal for the Sunday and that he would ring me the following day to organise what food me and my partner would like.It is now Thursday...... still no phone call, so personally im disappointed in the customer service and lack of follow through to try and rectify their mistake. I will not be getting another takeaway from them because i have lost all confidence that the food i have paid for will be correct and if it isn’t correct they don’t care enough to try and rectify it to keep my business.

I worked a few shifts at Brown's in March 2020, just before the pandemic and 8 months later and yet to be paid. I am a student (which they are aware of), and therefore left Lincoln during March to October, during which time I have contacted them numerous times through WhatsApp and have been blatantly ignored. I recently went in to speak to the manager face to face to ask about my wages, to be greeted rudely and as though I was a nuisance for trying to get my earned wages. They claimed to not have a record of my shift which is poor, and not to have my BACs, even though I had sent them to his girlfriend and the lady who had hired me. He also claimed to have tried to contact my mum, but clearly not very hard as she never received his call back. It is a nice place to eat and I didn't want to have to leave a bad review but 8 months is ridiculous and hopefully this will get their attention.

Misleading pie choice! The lamb pie was mince. It doesn’t say mince. It should! If I order steak pie I’d expect chunks of steak and if I got mince I’d be disappointed. Personally I think it’s misleading to advertise lamb pie and serve minced lamb with veg. Disappointing. We queried it after and got a very rude response telling us it was down to cost! Also said they didn’t have to specify. We disagree. Really disappointed to have received such a passive aggressive response when we were really polite! Customer service not high on the agenda and clearly not interested in repeat business. Given we have eaten in the restaurant a lot we felt really upset at their response. We won’t go back. So we had ‘insider knowledge’ on how good the pies were.Browns has a tiny frontage near the very top of steep hill and very close to the cathedral. Browns is not just a restaurant but a takeaway too.The friendly staff gave us a warm welcome, and we were sat right at the back of the restaurant. Even though it was a Sunday night, it was still 3/4s full. All the other diners seemed to be in a jolly mood, which gave a super ambiance. Obviously the menu is pie biased, and I am sure their is a flavour to suit every taste. Extra veg is available (at a price) and this includes red cabbage, chunky chips and the most awesome cauliflower cheese. So, who ate all the pies? Well we had a good bash...but as for Humphrey...you will have to visit to find out all about this character.

For a business of this high quality of food and service I am surprised that they cannot afford a working card machine, absolutely embarrassing. After being told that the card machine was a bit temperamental I was left in a situation where my card payment was being voided because of the signal and the lack of working technology in the building. If you ever come here for a meal I suggest highly that you bring cash and do not pay with any sort of card. I do find it bizarre that a business like this cannot spend an extra £20 on a new card machine.. after all of this malarkey I was told to go to the cashpoint up the road to draw cash out, and on this occasion I did because I just wanted to get it over and done with, any other time I would’ve refused as I’d already been waiting 20 minutes to pay by my card. Beautiful pie lunch, nice friendly service. The black pudding scotch egg starter was amazing, we have definitely found a gem of a restaurant with a good choice of menu.

My family and I visited the pie shop this evening and had a lovely time! The food was delicious and hearty - they aren’t just experts in the pie industry. The atmosphere is cosy and perfect for a family meal. The waitress was very polite and attentive, always with a smile. A lovely way to end a Christmas break. Will definitely have to go back and revisit. Highly recommend!

We visited with friends and the service was nothing short of terrible. We had to ask for menus after waiting for 20 minutes. Starters came before our drinks. We were charged for a beer that we didn’t receive (was taken off the bill when we pointed it out). The blonde lady at reception was very abrupt and struggled to sort out our payments when we paid the bill (we were splitting it in two with friends). The atmosphere seemed chaotic.

Just before Christmas, we ate here with friends when visiting Lincoln. It was cold outside and a warm pie was exactly what the Dickensian Doctor ordered for lunch.

Just what you would expect from a pie shop, great pies. I had the special mince and blue cheese. Choice of pastry and lots of different mash to accompany. All done very well. I was worried the blue cheese would be overpowering but it was not, just right so you could taste everything. Lovely old quirky building and very popular so book to ensure your table. No complaints what so ever from us. Staff were friendly and ensured we all were happy, we were a large table of 8.

Having recently visited this restaurant and read the recent reviews, we followed Sarah P’s advice and tried a local chip shop. We found the ‘front of house’ service on both arrival and departure to be vastly more friendly and polite.

I very rarely critize things as I am very easy going however I have to say that I was very disaponted with this place. The service was very poor, slow and staff did not seem to manage well at all.

After reading previous 2 star reviews, I feel the need to give a realistic review of this restaurant. Unfortunately you will get pathetic moaners and it sounds like they’ve had a couple lately. I cannot speak highly enough of this place. We are only on holiday here for 5 days and it was so good the first time we had to come back a second time before we leave. There are 8 of us which includes adults and children. We sampled quite a bit of the menu over the 2 visits and can honestly say every dish was amazing. The standard of the food and price is fantastic, not to mention the lovely warm welcome and service you receive from ALL staff. The lady owner took the time to chat and serve us too, we could have stayed all day it was that’ll nice.

Lovely rustic restaurant, small and cosy with fantastic food. The pies were the best we’d ever tasted, cheesy mash, chunky chips and vegetables were all great. The staff were friendly and helpful and service was quick. The only negatives are the toilet door didn’t close and it was chilly in the restaurant which is why I didn’t score a 5. Would definitely visit again and would definitely recommend.

As my husband is a great lover of pies, I called in here to buy some. Ordered two pies and a large pork pie. Not ever could the pork pie be classed as 'large' - its more of a picnic sized pie. At £5 it was a complete rip off - i bought the other one in the picture below from Simpsons butchers (to be found in Pennells Garden Centre, North Hykeham) at £3.90. I won't be returning to Browns, not ever.

arrived on a wet and windy December evening - lovely warm welcome; very busy due to a large Christmas party but the staff were amazing - running everywhere and although we may have waited a little longer than normal for service the waitress was so charming we really didn't notice. Visited Browns Pie Shop and restaurant last night. I have to say the meal and service was really good. Four of us ate, with a meal consisting of four starters, mains with wine and water for £140.00 which I thought was great value. Vegetarian selection was really good, although I had the Steak and Kidney with Horseradish Mash which was excellent. Would recommend to all and would go back.

Thought we would give it try but we were not impressed. Staff seemed disorganised. Seats are crammed together and near the toilets you will be in a draft. Food portions were big. My steak pie a bit too salty. Couldn’t manage a dessert as well as a starter. Definite room for improvement

Great place for lunch, the pies are first class with something to suit most folk. I loved the fact that you had a choice of a proper pie (pastry top and bottom) or a stew with a lid version! The staff were all on the ball, pleasant and attentive and the beer was great - what more could you ask for?

We rang to book a table for a Monday evening, we weren't sure we'd need to but glad we did. Monday evening in November and it was full. And we soon realised why. Browns Pie shop is an excellent restaurant. It doesn't just sell pie's but wht would you want anything else !! The Pies, The Mash, The Chips, The veg, absolutely top notch. They also have a very nice selection of beer as well. The service outstanding and the building at the top of Steep Hill is old and quirky with a great history. It was a joy to eat and drink here.

I had no booking, but they squeezed me in after a 15 minute wait. Wow, the scotch egg starter was delicious, the egg was runny - spot on. I am not a mash fan, but decided to have the cheese mash, I was not disappointed. I had the enclosed steak and kidney pie - filled with quality meat, as you can see from the photo. Well worth a visit.

Have been to Browns on several occasions and have always had a good meal, this time eating from the 'Specials' menu, which was well cooked and full of flavour. The main change on this visit was the staff, our greeting was not the best, although those waiting on the table did try and make up for that.

My sister and I popped in for lunch and decided to have one of the sharer platters. It was absolutely delicious - pork pie, scotch egg, chips, salad and pickles, all top notch. It was the bowl of mushroom soup with croutons that was the star of the show for me. Very tasty, piping hot and could have eaten a whole bowl to myself. The only comment would be to serve the soup in two dishes rather than one bowl. We will definitely have this dish again. Staff courteous and helpful. Service just right.

Rude staff, they speak to you like youre an idiot and have an air about them that suggests they are doing you a favour by letting you eat there. The food is OK but nothing amazing and it is overpriced. Much nicer places to eat uphill!
