We were looking for a pub to kill some time before our off-peak train ticket back to the hotel was valid, when we stumbled upon this small jewel in a side road of Brighton.A big sortiment of keg and cask beers as well as ciders, fair prices and likeable personnel satisfies the needs of every pub visitor who's looking for a cozy place to explore some beers. Would definitely visit again!

It's lovely and laid back. Staff are cool;how Brighton used to be a few years ago. But seriously! £8.15 for a pint of stout?! I don't even drink stout. This isn't Scandinavia or Singapore. What are you? Back street cool, or commercial rip off?

I am vegetarian and I love the fact that they offer both vegan and vegetarian options as well as a selection of traditional roast meats. The meal comes with lots of delicious veg, roast potatoes gravy and a Yorkshire pudding and offers really good value for money. It looks small at first sight but there is ample space at the back of the restaurant. Well talking about the beers I tried one each from Cask Keg and cider and trust me you will not be disappointed at all. So overall a nice place to be with friends or Solo. You can reach here from London through train and it will cost you about 28 pounds approx. non peak hours.

A welcoming rustic pub just off Western Road. The current Camra pub of the year which is not surprising because the beer sampled was in excellent condition. There were a wide range of real ale, keg beer and three real ciders. Food was from a small menu but very tasty on a cold Saturday lunchtime. Visited here for the first time after hearing about it for a few years. What an eye-opener!I had thought it was a bit more of a shiny, gleaming, hipster pub - but really it is a quality backstreet local just off the Western Road and a very short walking distance from Churchill Square. The beer range is very good with (I think) 6 real ales and 3 or 4 ciders on the bar, plus a number of keg beers behind the bar. While we didn't eat we saw the food coming out that looked really nice and it seems they have recently one a best Sunday roast in Brighton award. Will definitely come here again.

I love this boozer... one of the best in Brighton for ale and craft delights. A real 'spit and sawdust' vibe. Don't expect fancy cocktails or mainstream lager. This place is for people serious about drinking only the finest from independent brewers. How pleased I was recently to find out the kitchen had seen an overhaul. Lets be honest - the food at the BBD had gone downhill a year or so ago after what was initially some of the best burgers and wings in the city when it first opened. I still frequented the place for a few beers, but didn't eat here for a while when the last chef was in residence. Pleased to say now that the food is back to a high standard since the new kitchen. For one of the UKs few decent places to be it has to be Brighton with its eclectic mix of micro brews and welcoming pubs which show variety and creativity. This gem is huddled amongst houses off the hideous main drag but excels in its cosy atmosphere yet offers a wide range of interesting ales...you won't even see the latest marketers copy-the-usa ploy of calling everything craft ale! Cosy but spacious and not a worn out stool or rotting carpet to be seen. A few chairs and nice touch of small high level tables outside to lean on. But having had and loved the wings and burgers here regularly since it opened, its a disappointment that the standards for these has dropped in past months. I have frequented this hostelry regularly over the past 20 years and always enjoyed it, however, as The Brighton Beer Dispensary it is excellent! I was introduced to this incarnation of the pub by my boyfriend last year. The beer and ciders on offer are exceptional and the staff are friendly, helpful, understanding, and have an enviable telephone manner. The other clientele are interesting and the atmosphere is warm, calm and inviting. The volume of the music allows for conversation - isn't this what a pub should be about? It would be a tiny gig venue otherwise.........I will continue to drink here until my boyfriend dumps me - he will get the pub in the split.

Words are not yet invented that describe my unfettered joy at the continual gold standard that this ale house achieves. I now model my whole life on the superb host! #PigBush

This was my favourite craft beer pub when visiting Brighton.Had a magnificent Porter here, (Penge Porter). Great atmosphere, back ground music so you can have a conversation without having to shout, will be back the next time we visit Brighton

I first came across this pub last November! I'm not sure why it took this long after having been in Brighton for nearly 15 years! This is an ale drinkers heaven with ales to suit all! Even my lager swilling friends have found something to drink that isn't lager. The food looks great, although I have only had the chilly chips. The staff are very friendly and helpful in finding the right ale for your tastes. The only drawback could be that it is on the small side! But then again, that might be the beauty of it!

I visited this bar for the first time this weekend and won't be going back.I went as a part of a small group of 4 and arrived at about 9pm on a Saturday evening. It was fairly busy inside but the first thing I noticed was the lack of atmosphere. IT just felt a bit bland and unwelcoming. There was music on but the drone of people talking overpowered it.So, getting to the bar. It took a while to get served. 3 of our group are beer and ale drinkers and had a great choice to select from and did all enjoy their beers. However, they were expensive at around £6 a pint. As the only non-beer/ale drinker, we enquired as to whether they had any vodka...cue patronising staff moment...[barman holds arms out as if to say 'take a look around']...and patronisingly says "Well, this isn't really a vodka kind of bar." I'm not sure why he couldn't have just said "Sorry we don't" and then offer an alternative. There was just no need for his tone.I'm used to visiting craft ale/beer premises and know that I may be limited on choice, but most craft beer pubs will generally hold a selection of popular spirits to accommodate those who attend as part of a group that may not be the beer drinker.Anyway, I could see they had gin so we asked for a gin and tonic instead. When he handed it over he said something about ice but we didn't really take in what he said. Anyway, as were coming away from the table we realised that he must have said they didn't have any ice. A bit confused, we asked him again what he said about the ice when he walked by our table - the response was the ice machine was broken and the one's they'd put in the freezer hadn't frozen yet. I thought this was a bit poor, Sainsbury's is just round the corner - surely you would have just grabbed a bag of two rather than serve a warm gin and tonic which isn't really pleasant. It may not have been so bad if the tonic had been chilled, but it wasn't.Anyway, after this, and clearly picking up that no ice wasn't good, he did go round to Sainsbury's to get some.So to summarise, if you are going here, please expect to be looked down upon should you not drink the ales or beers even if the rest of the group and expect to pay over the average for the privilege.

Lovely atmosphere, great selection of beers, AMAZING beer-battered gherkins. Nice staff too! Would recommend for a quiet drink with a couple of friends - might not be great for a big group.

Very very good ale..I mean the darker sticky stuff this is what this pub is about organic ales mostly and they are excellent. I preferred my first choice to my second choice which made me feel a bit queasy maybe they did not mix..but I survived that. My advice is to stick to the one you like and not mix it all up. The beer appears to be kept well. The seats at the front are perfect for supping it and pondering the universe or having a smoke and the rear room is good for those that like to VAP..as far as I could see by the clouds of VAP smoke!! Fantastic proper old fashioned pub but one of the new generation of pubs too as its all visible in big kegs ordered in from all over the country (I think!?) Great chips and mayo...bar man allowed me to try a couple of tasters of the beer which was great. Really like what these two are doing.

Great little pub tucked away down the side street, peanuts were soft but the cask ales were tasty! Mint chocolate stout was beautiful, cheers!

Great little Brighton secret. Tucked away behind McDonald's is this fab old school boozer.Plenty of proper beers and ciders.A good varied crowd of punters with a friendly atmosphere. Staff are happy to help with the plentiful choice of ales at a good price. We Recommended if you want a traditional pub away from the Brighton madness.

Small, basic, simple pub offering an excellent range of real ales & bottled beers. In a side street off the busy Western Road shopping area, it offers an oasis of beery delight away from the hordes of bargain hunters. Interesting & unusual real ales at bargain prices (£3.40 a pint!), & a great range of bottled beers on offer, plus some very good value food.Recommended.
