Very disappointing. They may have full table service but it’s not a restaurant. Their floors are not just dirty but filthy, their service is very poor (very slow (on a number of occasions I had to go and look for someone), incompetent, clueless) and as if that wasn’t bad enough, their prices are exorbitant. They’re a little ridiculous, caught between a very nice restaurant’s prices but yet a typical pub's decor and “feel”. The combination simply does not justify the prices. The portion sizes aren't even that good either. Pretty on the outside with the nice flowers and all but there are a number of nicer (proper) restaurants I’d rather go to (that, to be honest, would probably cost less) before I’d go to the Brigadier Gerard again. Sorry, but I simply cannot recommend this pub in good conscience.

We’re moving to the area soon and thought we’d check out our potential new local. We went during lunch time and it was quite quiet. We sat out in their garden area which was nice. Service at the bar was friendly and attentive. I made a mistake in my order and noticed after paying. When I asked if they could correct it, there was no issue at all. I had the fish and chips and my wife had some sort of panini (I think) and dirty fries. Both were delicious and really large portions which was great. It was quite pricey, but where isn’t these days? But as it was good quality and large portions it felt worth it. We’ll return soon for an evening visit.

Popped in here on an off chance after shopping at hedge end and so glad we did. They managed to fit us in on a busy Sunday, staff were friendly and accommodating I think a lot of people book, but warmer days they do have lovely outside seating too. We ordered a roast dinner - one beef and one Turkey, and it was the best roast dinner we’ve ever eaten while dining out. I find often a pub roast can be underwhelming but this tasted so freshly cooked and just delicious! Both meats were cooked to perfection and the roast potatoes were the best I’ve ever had. The vegetables were also freshly cooked. We enjoyed it so much we’ve already been back and again the food was incredible. I tell everyone I know if you want a roast dinner you have to go here. Highly recommend- you won’t be disappointed.

Located on the Winchester Rd in Horton Heath is the popular Brigadier Gerard pub. My first time there for a late lunchtime pint and pub grub. Staff were friendly & efficient, served our beers at the counter and took our order at the bar, we sat outside and the food came promptly. We had a Caesars salad and a halloumi salad both of which was good. Also, we both had a tiramisu for dessert which was rich and creamy and not for those who wish to stay trim! Will come back again.

We had my lovely Mother in law’s wake here on the June 24th. We had had her late husbands here too in 2016 and she had wanted the same for herself. It was lovely. The buffet was perfect. The area you get to the side is lovely with tables set up so people can chat and reminisce. The barman was so nice and the ladies in the pub and restaurant were friendly and kind. If you are looking for a venue especially if you have a cremation at Wessex Vale it’s so close. We are so pleased we stuck to her instructions because it was perfect. Thank you to all at the pub as it couldn’t have been better. The food was delicious! Thank you xx

A big thank you to the staff for getting us a table for 8 at very short notice. The pub we were booked into for my mother's 90th birthday had a power cut which we weren't aware of until we arrived for our dinner. The food at the Brigadier Gerard was lovely and we enjoyed the Sunday roasts which were very filling. Would definitely go back there.

An eyesore as soon as we walked into the pub. Plastic tablecloth’s on all the tables, not what one would expect in a bar, more in a tearoom. Really let the place down compared to how the pub used to be. My partner and I only had sandwiches for lunch, and even those were very disappointing to say the least. We certainly won’t be returning!

Stopped here for lunch and we were disappointed. Limited lunch menu and very little vegetarian or vegan food and one of our group is vegan. Slightly odd service incl getting our food but not being given cutlery. Pizza was nice but everything else we had was average or less than average. Won't be going back but for the prices charged this could be much better.

We arrived at 2.30 pm for lunch as the website said they were serving food from 12 -8, but they said that from this week they were stopping food between 3-6 pm. However, we were accomidated courteously and without fuss. We ordered at the bar while our table was being prepared. Our food arrived promptly, and it was delicious. Two of us had chicken and ham pie, which was packed with meat with a thin crust and vegetables. We both really enjoyed it. Liver and bacon was served to the other of the group who described it equally delicious. As we knew they had stopped cooking as it was past 3pm, we were surprised to be offered desert! I had chocolate tart and ice cream, and one had an ice selection. My tart was rich and luscious. Having arrived late, we were unable to have fish pie or fish and chips as they had run out. The restaurant was very busy, but we were served by delightful waitresses who were very helpful. This was a great find along a busy road. We will definitely book to go again as this is recommended.

Situated in Horton Heath I decided it's about time I ate here. From the outside it's a pretty place, the flowers were in bloom and the sun was shining. As you go into the place the first thing that it reminded me of was a quintessential tea room !! The colours and decor were bright and cheerful and it sets the tone of the evening perfectly. Tonight I was served by the 2 smiley girls Cream and Adie, they didn't rush you and we're happy and chatty. After looking at the well balanced menu I went for the beef and stout pie, mashed potatoes and veg with a side of garlic bread. It was nice to just sit in there people watching and relaxing. When the food turned up it didn't disappoint. A good sized portion which was hot and inviting. The pastry was done well. Not too hard but not soggy. The filling was really good, no fatty bits of meat but a good portion of well cooked, well seasoned meat in a rich thick gravy, I was impressed 😊 The mash had no lumps and was creamy and tasty. The veg was cooked well and not al dente !! The garlic bread was of a good size, warm and actually tasting of garlic. Top marks to the girls who served me plus the chefs Sabi and Matt, top food guys and last but not least Mark the manager. Will definitely dine here again. Recommended 👍

First time eating here, with a friend for his birthday. From the warm welcome to the cheery goodbye everything was excellent. Staff attentive without hovering, two size options for main courses was great as I had the smaller one to leave room for pud. Friend had fish pie, I had steak and stout pie. Both lovely with fresh veg that wasn't overcooked. Puds were different from most other places and delicious. Lemon meringue sundae and mango eton mess. Both light and very tasty. We look forward to going again and trying some of the other dishes on the menu.

We visited The Brigadier Gerard on a Monday lunchtime with friends to support the Eat out to Help out scheme. There was ample outside seating but we had booked a table inside. The Covid -19 arrangements were very clear & well organised. The staff were very friendly & helpful & quickly took our orders for food & drink. Our meals arrived promptly & were well presented. However although our food tasted ok the general feeling was that the portion size was quite small & didn't represent good value for money. We visited for the last day of the eat out to help out deal. Table was booked in advance. The menu was described by the hostess as a COVID 19 menu! This was more expensive and very limited from their usual menu. On top of that most of the items were sold out. We were told that steaks were not available as restaurants might have to close again to give priority to schools! We have been there a number of times before, but this was ridiculous and certainly does not show any sign that they want to get the restaurant back on track. After listening to these ridiculous comments and looking at what was left on the menu we decided to leave. They were clearly not interested. Won’t be back either!

Well, I would have thought at such a tough time for the gastronomy a pub like this one would have a bit more ambition and flair. Pretty flowers at the front, and that is all that is pretty. Service by waitress 1 reluctant, table distancing not sufficient, electric wires hanging about on a sad wall behind our table (though they had the green stickers on), ladies’ toilet allocated for staff only (why?), so I had to use the men’s. This meant: a) make sure nobody in there, 2. walk past some very unclean urinals. We should have left at that point. Food came in good time, but it was utterly listless, can’t find a better word. A micro-quiche for my husband, but with good sweet-potato chips. Mine was a watery mixed salad, with smoked salmon just plonked on top. Micro-coleslaw. Waitress 2 very friendly - and almost apologetic without words - brought our bill. Expensive. Please do your country a favour and get better, you will find you get more customers.

Well well well... what an absolute shambles! A nice place to go for a drink, but if you’re going for food, DO NOT TRUST THE WEBSITE! I rang up and booked for 5:30pm, no problem, but be prepared for a one course wonder! The website needs to be updated, as it’s misleading and lies to the customer! I am simply rating this place 2 points due to my girlfriends nice lasagna. We get welcomed nicely, but then get told we are table no 86, nobody showed us to our table, so we went outside looking at the pieces of paper like I was strolling around an auditorium finding my table for an exam! We found our table, waitress came over and we asked ‘are there any starters or desserts,’ to which the lady responded ‘nope, just mains, we have a very limited menu.’ So there we are with a cheap piece of A4 paper in a plastic wallet. Drinks were no problem, then again a jug of water and a rosè wine aren’t the most difficult to pour! Having sat down for 5-10 minutes, the sun was beaming on our heads and necks, so we requested to have either a table switch or an umbrella being moved to shade us over, however, yet again that created a whole new can of worms! The waitress replied to our question ‘oh I can’t say yes, in case I get in trouble, I’ll check.’ This wasn’t checked, so we asked another lady, who said we can, but they weren’t willing to help, as I moved the brolly for ourselves... customer service at its finest right there! Prior to the mains arriving, we were handed a dirty beach bucket with cutlery and sauces in, not the most charming sight, instantly moved onto the floor! My girlfriend very much enjoyed her lasagna, so if you’re a fan of it, order it! My Hampshire Steak burger was average, no real flavour, our chips were very nice however! Our plates are taken away, not a flinch of ‘how was everything’ at the end of our course or even during, no care! We were even more bemused when we were asked ‘will you be joining us for sweets’, after 2 staff members told us, one being the same waitress, ‘we only have mains.’ To our dismay, we paid and left! No proper uniform, or even aprons or badges, so we can not identify who is who to name names! Shockingly no masks/visors were worn either, coronavirus who? ! If the owner doesn’t reply, I will be satisfied to know other potential customers will think VERY carefully before visiting!Enjoy your one course, if you decide to go!

I work in an office very close to this pub, for over 13 years we have been spending evenings, lunches and some weekends (and allot of money) in here.It used to have a lovely atmosphere, great staff and a homely feel to it.....now it feels dark, depressing, the landlord/lady are rude and terribly old fashioned and very unwelcoming!6 of us booked a table for lunch a few weeks ago - food was okay, service awful and before we had even finished our drinks, the landlady asked us how much longer we were going to be! when we said we weren't sure, she replied with 'isnt your lunch hour nearly over' we were gobsmacked! As it's convenient we visited after work on Friday - not really Christmassy, rude Management and we were totally speechless when the landlady had missed a drink from a round (that we had paid for) and refused to pour the beer - we had to buy another one as she said 'we couldn't prove we had paid for it!'How this pub is still running (surviving on the wakes I think) I don't know. Such a shame but has certainly lost our custom. We went to the Dolphin in Botley - was lovely! light, festive, polite staff with a great atmosphere and cheaper drinks I would stay well clear!!!Oh, and they HATE children!!!! The table for 8 was booked and first signs on arrival looked very promising. Young service staff were flying around like nobody's business and were in your face as if pushed by the senior boss. The meals were out on time considering we were a table of eight and although nice, were typically carvery style meat, each slice of the same thickness regardless of beef, chicken, pork etc. Unfortunately the meals were all swimming in gravy and the veg was out of sorts. Puddings were ordered but again very expensive for what looked like bought in products. To cap off a very ordinary Sunday lunch, the staff could not have made it more clear that we were overstaying our welcome despite having spent over £250,twice we were ushered out of the door. Have eaten here a few times and had good food, with good sized portion, therefore our first review was very good. However called in today for lunch and ordered the burger, which I have had before. Don't know what has changed but the burger was dry and had no flavour other than the sauce that had been spread over it. Only a few chips and the smallest salad garnish. For the price of £13 I think it was overpriced as well. They also do smaller sized meals, wouldn't of thought you get the food much smaller. It seems as though they have cut back in the kitchen and on the food. Such a shame as I don't think I would bother going again, £33 for two soft drinks and two small burger meals don't think it was worth it.

My Mum, friend and I visited mid week (thursday) for a drink and bite to eat. The bar was empty, there were quite a few folk drinking in tge garden and just 3 tables in the restaurant (max 20 heads) eating - pretty quiet on the food front however; we bought a round of drinks. Picked up a menu and went back to order only to be told theyd stopped serving food at 7.15 as they were busy and the kitchen was rammed (where was the 'busy?!) so we had a crisp dinner. they started taking orders again at 8pm but then stopped almost immediately as had run out of food. My mum also queried how much she'd been charged for her round of drinks - the barman conceded she'd been over charged but couldn't refund as they'd not given her a receipt. at least the bar staff were polite and friendly. From previous experience the landlord and lady are not, so it was refreshing they weren't there!

We visited the Brigadier Gerard on a Sunday evening while driving through the village after visiting friends who live locally. We were quickly seated and given menus. Given that the sign at the entrance to the car park read 'Eat here from £7.50 Mon-Sat' I was a little surprised to see the price of the main courses on the Sunday menu started at £13.95 but we were hungry so ordered anyway; I ordered a fish pie. The three main courses arrived VERY quickly and as the waitress (who I assume was also the owner) put the plates down it was immediately obvious why. My fish pie was INCREDIBLY hot, had clearly just come out of the microwave and hadn't been near an oven. Unfortunately - but not surprisingly - it was also of poor quality. Because of the microwave the fish was mushy and completely overcooked, the sauce had separated into a watery mess and the melted cheese was a congealed lump on top. Nothing about it was creamy or tasty as you'd hope for from a home-cooked fish pie but I was hungry so emptied the food onto my plate, covered it in pepper, and ate it. When the owner came back to clear the table she asked if we were happy and I politely explained that given the price of the food, I was disappointed to receive something that had so clearly been microwaved. There was no apology or denial, and instead she insisted that there was no other way of cooking it before walking off looking very irritated. Not the response I was expecting.

A friend and I visited for lunch one day last week. Parking is very adequate. A nice range of meals/prices, well cooked and very tasty. Spoilt by the weather I was able to enjoy the beer garden which was very relaxing. As a wheelchair user access to the pub was ground level with a very easy door threshold to negotiate. Having ordered my food/Drinks the staff immediately offered me assistance in getting said items to my table including the bucket of sauces and cutlery :-). It was also possible for me to order my second drink from my table outside saving me the going back into the pub. Thank you the team :-). The pub does have a designated disabled toilet but be aware it’s narrow with very little room to manoeuvre once inside. I look forward to revisiting and thank the staff again for their help in making my lunch experience at the pub very pleasant.

Menu fairly standard pub grub but all freshly cooked and everyone enjoyed what they ate. Has a 5 hygiene rating too which is a bonus! Great service by really nice staff. Just one minus... loos are shabby and in need of deep clean or preferably refurb soon (e.g. floor and doors to cubicles v grubby) but that could be quickly sorted. Aged parents like it here so would def bring them here again.

I’ve had good food here and it’s a good meeting place with a good array of food. However, the customer service offered by the landlord and landlady leaves much to be desired. Having been here with both friends and family I’ve experienced no welcome, and nothing other than a functional (bordering on rude) service at the bar.

Myself and my heavily pregnant friend visited during the week - she had the Brie sandwich and they ensured it was well cooked for her. The man asked if there were any sauces that we wanted, to which my friend replied no thank you but I’d love some crisps - he returned with the biggest bag you’ve ever seen! Staff were really down to earth and helpful - sometimes with nice pubs it can feel a bit forced, but not here; they came across as genuinely wanting us to have a nice Iunch. My ploughman’s was perfect - exactly what I’d hoped for! I’ve already recommended the pub to friends!

My partner and I were treated to a lovely meal here by a life long friend of my dad's and our family that I hadn't seen since my dad's funeral 9 and a half years ago. The ambience and layout of the pub was beautiful. The staff were very friendly and attentive. We sat at a table right by the bar overlooking a big screen as my partner wanted to watch 1st Six Nations game. It was perfect and not too loud and not too overcrowded being right beside the bar, as I thought it might be.

My wife and I called in on a Friday evening and were pleasantly surprised to get a space in the car park and also a quiet table in the restaurant without having booked. It was the 25th of January so I had one of the daily specials: haggis, neeps, and tatties with whisky gravy. The portion was very generous and the taste was to die for. This is our favourite local pub and we go there wherever we want good food in a quiet place that has ambience without being ostentatious.

Just back from a delicious pub meal here. It was a spontaneous decision and we hadn’t booked. Fortunately there was one free table. The staff were friendly and accommodating and the service was good. Our sandwiches and scampi and chips were excellent. A great way to start the new year! Thanks everyone.

They fitted us in at short notice on a busy night. Very clean, nicely lit. Well laid out and comfortable which is unusual in a pub. The food was great, good quality and plentiful. Tasty too, not like the fried crap most places offer. The pie was very good, neatly finished with a good glaze. Veg cooked properly, chips cooked in clean oil. They obviously have high standards in the kitchen and that shows. This is a tenanted pub with hard working managers who offer great service at a good price. We will return.

My friend and I had a very nice meal here recently. this as an old pub as I remember going in there with my uncle some 65 years ago when it was a 'spit an sawdust' pub with customers playing dominoes. It has come a long way since those days and the food is well presented and tasty. Will definitely keep going.

Pub looks incredible from the outside, food is average however service a little on the downside staff seem miserable. No atmosphere in the place. Car park seems full too for lack of customers which could put people off. Probably won’t chose again as first choice.

Terrible, food was incredibly poor quality. Even beer glasses were dirty and all place seemed to be tacky & sticky. The place also smelt stale and fusty and the decor was in desperate need of an update. My 7 year old daughter is always excited about going to this place as we are local, but after this visit she wouldn't even go if I force her. And I saw they are not nice to foreigners I guess it is some UKIP nest. Avoid at all costs!

Saw this place from the road and decided to give it a try, as the front looked so pretty with all the flowers on display. We ordered the Steak and Stout pie and it was amazing. Our waitress Jodie heard me mention I loved Yorkshire puds and gravy and offer me an extra pud and gravy. She was really friendly and very attentive which made our meal enjoyable. If you have any room for desserts they are also awesome. Will definitely be popping back here again.

Six of us met for an evening meal yesterday (sat) it was prebooked and a table reserved, and we had a very nice evening,The landlady who has been criticised in some reviews but we had no problems and son got a waitress to look after us, when running a pub you probably have to be a bit sharp seeing some of the customers pubs get.No problems with ordering they were willing to change items ie chips instead of mash potatoes with the pie we had good variety of food which was well cooked and presented, the veg was nicely cooked not just dipped in hot water as some places do,The food came in reasonable timed it was good.regarding price, no different to other pubs up the Meon valley, it worked out a about £22 a head for two courses and drinks and the waitress got a good tip.The ice creams on the sweet menu were delicious, For my main dish I had the steak and beer pie which was full of steak and thoroughly enjoyed it, the others in our party were well satisfied with their meals,My wife and I will try this pub again though its about an 18 mile trip for us.

Very unwelcoming place for people with a foreign accent. Customer service drops to absolute zero when serving foreigners. Shame as it seemed nice place and we would be regular visitors as living a mile away. Shame they have staff who likes to show that the English customers as more important than those with foreign accent.

Food was average menu choice very good. Service was very good. Local pub local feel local atmosphere certainly not the place was dead shame for a local country pub. Sky high drinks prices no wonder places like this are closing. I won't be in a hurry back. I don't think there were any locals in there however after reading other reviews and spoken to a past member of staff I understand better. Ile stick to Harvester.

Eaten here twice now as no other options available. First time was in May 2022 and we were offered pizzas as there was no other food. We paid £15 each and watched the 'chef' open frozen Chicago town pizzas! We could not believe our eyes. Ate here last week as well as we were unable to find anywhere outside of the airport to eat and this time all that was on offer was sausage rolls and macaroni cheese at £15 for what I would consider to be a portion suitable for a 5 year old!
