This is our 3rd visit of this lovely pub and it just gets better. I’m so surprised anybody could be even slightly disappointed with this gem. We booked a table for 8 for Sunday lunch. My family all live in different parts of the UK and we all travel about an hour to reach this pub. The drive is so worth it. The car park is big enough to cope with all our cars and they have an electric car charger if needed. Outside (for our Grandchildren) is a lovely play area. Our welcome, our service and the food cannot be faulted in anyway. The portions are amazing and well presented. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff here. We thoroughly enjoyed all our meals. To top this amazing lunch off - a singer on an acoustic guitar was playing live in the background- at a volume we could still talk easily over, he too was amazing. Well done to everybody there - you all deserve a huge round of applause just like the singer! We will definitely see you again soon

We chose The Bourne Valley Inn for my husbands birthday as previously it had been a lovely place to eat. The staff were friendly but the food was awful. Our starters, scotch egg, were cold in the middle and the sausage meat was undercooked. My husband said the roast beef was chewy but my chicken was the best bit of the dinner. Large amounts of cabbage which was barely cooked and I like my veg steamed. Potatoes and parsnips were dreadful, they tasted like they had been heated up in stale oil. No bread sauce which wasn't a problem and the yorkshire pudding just wasn't that great. The manageress deducted the food from our bill without quibble, so we just paid for our drinks and left. It's such a shame especially as it was a special occasion and the pub used to be very good. I don't like writing poor reviews but I wouldn't want others to waste their money on a roast. Maybe the rest of the menu is much nicer.

We had a lovely overnight stay while visiting the Bombay sapphire gin distillery near by. The staff were so lovely on arrival, the room was great and the whole place had a really nice country pub vibe. We had dinner which was great value and really tasty (probably didn’t need pudding but couldn’t resist and it was a fabulous rhubarb crumble). Room was well equipped and spacious and breakfast was fabulous. Lots of choice and again the staff could not have been kinder or more helpful. Really recommend as a place to stay.

Stayed here for 4 nights, good location for our weekend visit to Car Fest, food was good & staff very friendly & helpful. The room however was a different matter, very cold & damp even in August, it was not very clean, the bathroom ceiling was mouldy from the damp & the tiles did not look as though they had been cleaned for ages. There was a notice in the room which said to leave towels on the bathroom floor if clean ones were needed, we did this on the first day & left out the sign provided asking for the room to be serviced we came back late at night & it had not been done, fortunately a very nice young lady behind the bar helped us out. We were told the next day that rooms are only serviced if you ask, we weren't told that on check in & why put the incorrect information in the room. Also the staff had no spare key for our room so couldn't get in to clean unless we were there. We did ask if the heating could be put on but the radiators in our room were not working. This could be a nice place to stay but needs some attention to detail.

My Wife and two Daughters celebrate their birthdays in July, so Sunday lunch at the Bourne Valley in seemed like a good idea. I have never felt the need to write a review before, however on this occasion the experience was so bad. We had booked a table and had arrived in good time, there after it went downhill. We had to second choice our Starter which wasn't a problem however it it took so long to arrive we nearly forgot what we had ordered. The main coarse took even longer to arrive. The roast beef which was supposed to be medium rare was well done and chewy. One of my Daughters had ordered Chicken without bread sauce and when it arrive so form of stogie bread sauce was on her plate. All four main courses were warm at best. The service we received through out was very lack lustre, which I can only attribute to poor management and/or lack of training. We were so disappointed with out experience we did not stop for desert or coffee. I certainly will not recommend the Bourne Valley Inn to anyone.

An excellent hostelry, set in the Hampshire countryside - all thatched cottages in the immediate vicinity. Took about 25 minutes from Newbury, and the same to the A303 then next morning. Our Room was good well appointed, and the bed comfortable. We ate in the evening, the food was delicious, I had the Burger special, my partner Fish. On the morning the Breakfast was excellent. Service was very good indeed, both at the Bar, and the serving of Food. The Butcombe Beer was 10/10. Check in and Check out very good indeed.

This was a shambles from the moment we went through the door with an unfortunate incident with the pubs dog getting stung by a wasp. Having booked a table of 4 for 7:30 we turned up promptly to find no table was ready for us and then being shown to a table in the bar area and having to ask for it to be cleaned. We ordered our food and having finished our starters the waiter the asked what we would like for a dessert, our main course arrived, they should have been accompanied by chunky chips when we asked about this we were told they had run out, two steak meals were mixed up, the side orders arrived just as the mains were being finished. The food itself was bland and the quality poor for the price. Unlike a previous reviewer I didn’t find the staff rude, just a little clueless and to give them the benefit of doubt I would say it’s a lack of training. The manageress I did find a little unprofessional her manner a bit abrupt and shouting from the bar at the staff is not good customer service or man management. In fairness when asked if we had enjoyed the meal I did say that regrettably that was a no, and the bill which was a little over £170 was reduced by £70. It is questionable if even £25 per head was value. This venue used to a good quality pub/restaurant with good service and food, it was always a little pricy when compared to other local pubs but you get what you pay for, or at least you should. Come on sort it out.

Lovely lunch with our friends today at the BVI, great food and a lovely warm welcome. The woodburner gave a lovely atmosphere, cosy and warm - just what you want on a cold autumn day. Big thanks to the manager, despite being unexpectedly short staffed, he coped really well and we didn’t feel it affected our service at all. Pie of the day was excellent but the puds exceeded our expectations. We would definitely recommend a visit, thanks again for a great meal.

Sunday lunch here was previously a joy. We should have left on arrival when the whole place was cold and unwelcoming but did so after the lumps of re-heated, dry roast pork arrived. The staff were charming but could not argue with the fact that what was presented on the plates would be an embarrassment to a basic fast food chain. What a shame this place has fallen prey to the accepted rituals of lowest common denominator.

Drinks order taken quickly and menus placed on the table, food ordered which came quickly. A few niggles, plates cold, food piled on top off each other, then drowned in gravy, would have been better if the vegetables had come separately on say a sharing plate, and gravy in a jug. Staff very friendly, value for money 8 out off 10

Very poor Experience Booked for 8 People for a special occassion, my Wifes 50th Birthday, I clled to make sure we could stay longer than the 2 hours it said on the website, they said this would be fine, After we had eaten we were told last orders had been called, this was 9.30pm.Half of the Food was not cooked to how we had asked for, ( Steak ), Most was cooked Medium Rare, not to everyones liking. The lady who was our waitress for the evening, was propper misserable all evening, as if she didn't want us there and everything was just to much hassle for her.At the end of the Evening we were given the bill, and i only noticed they had charged me a £32.00 service charge, and normally you are asked if you wanted to do this. I certainly would not of given this with the service we recieved.I would not normally write these kind of reviews, but everyone of us there last night felt exactly the same. They really did spoil what would of been a lovely surprise for my wife. Overall very dissapointed.

Sunday lunch is often the measure of a pubs food offering and the menu here has plenty of promise. The reality however was far from the mark. Mains were ridiculously over generous, made worse by the fact that items were cold or barely warm. Roast beef was impossible to cut with the standard cutlery, Roast (shoulder) Pork was a large cold 'slab' of meat that was also tough to cut and the crackling was tough (thankfully the dog enjoyed it). I get the spirit of generosity here, but the food needs to be of a standard that can be enjoyed and not left. The resultant food waste from poor cooking in the kitchen, is criminal in these chastened times and sloppy mass catering.

First visited Sunday 1/10/23. Probably last too. Family of six, 4 adults 2 children ages 3 and 4. Ordered roast options. All ready plated food was disappointing for the cost. Not very warm, inch thick of pork that was very hard to cut. Beef was bland and roast potatoes weren’t really roast potatoes, 3 halves small tiny potatoes overcooked! Veg was mediocre. No desserts as didn’t want disappointment. Sorry, but try somewhere else for the cost. We travelled 2hrs to see family and had high expectations for this place. Shame it didn’t live up to it.

So where do I start with regards this review which I am writing on behalf of my new wife and I. We were incredibly lucky to have decided upon and then used this location for our wedding in the 01st September 2023 and we can’t be happier that we did. The entire experience was nothing short of faultless, from the events coordinator Lauren who assisted us on so many aspects of planning and completion, to the great, happy, smiling and funny assistant manager Chelsea. The head chef Piers who produced stunning tasting food throughout the day and night, to all of the Butcombe brewery team who worked in whatever capacity on the day helping us have our fairytale day. I really can not talk highly enough of every single one of them, nothing was to much trouble, assistance was provided whenever we need it, the presentation and service was of the highest order. The whole Inn is beautifully decorated, fairy lights on the beams give it a magical appearance, whilst the large well kept outside space is perfect for guests to relax, enjoy and capture those memory making photos when the weather allows. Not only did all our family and wedding guests, state repeatedly how amazing and beautiful the venue was, the smiles and laughter of everyone emphasised it to the extreme. If you are thinking of staying a night in one of the beautiful rustic rooms, stopping by for a meal or drink, wondering whether to book it for a function including your own wedding day I would only say one thing!! Do not think about it, just do it, if you have anything like what we did then it will be your perfect day.

Oh my goodness what an afternoon tea! This afternoon tea was for the 4 of us and it definitely fed us well. With a range of sandwiches, pastries, cakes, scones and tea and coffee, we were left with full bellies after this one. A series of 5 different sandwich flavours were given on either white or brown breads included cheese and pickle, just ham, smoked salmon and cream cheese, egg mayonnaise, and roasted veg and hummus. My personal favourite was the roasted veg and hummus one on brown bread, as the homemade hummus was flavourful alongside the carefully roasted veg, and was definitely a sandwich I wouldn’t necessarily chose normally. All fillings were very generously put in and you could really tell they were made with fresh ingredients and completely homemade. The homemade sausage rolls were also a great hit on our table, and just look how many we got for 4 of us! Golden on the outside and succulent in the middle, these were definitely homemade and didn’t give you the feeling of when you eat a really greasy shop bought sausage roll but were rather the opposite. The pastry was light and not too thick so the sausage rolls were not dry. The cakes we got were a mixture of lemon cake, coffee cake, and chocolate brownies. The lemon drizzle were a personal favourite of mine and were delightfully fluffy with a bit-too-strong lemon flavour. The scones (not pictured) were also massive, and homemade, with some strawberry jam and clotted cream on the side, and left us all full to the brim of food. Teas and coffee were nice, and fast service meant these were filled up when needed. This is easily the best value afternoon tea I have been too at only £15pp and we had a lot leftover too! Overall review: Date visited- 6th April 2023 Food- 9/10 Service- 9.5/10 Price- £ Recommend to a friend? Yes✅✅

On arrival we were very excited, the waitress was very helpful in finding us a table and the place looked great. When our simple starters arrived of bread and oil, one of our breads were burnt. Unfortunately that then set the tone. When the mains finally arrived it was clear the 2 burgers had sat around for some time, the vegan burger was burnt on one side and the beef burger was completely overcooked and dry. The steak and fish and chips were cooked fresh and were good. So 50/50.Small things, but had to ask for things like cutlery, the garlic and parsley butter for the steak (which arrived as just garlic butter),and still didnt get a steak knife. We almost ordered desserts as with the 'eat out scheme' wouldn't make lunch too expensive. But when we were told that at £6 sticky toffee pudding or chocolate brownie doesn't come with cream, custard or ice cream, and was £2 extra per scoop, we quickly decided to call it a day and get the bill. After having to sort out an error on the bill for the discount, I then didnt bother with the conflict of explaining why i didnt agree with the added service charge (which was not deserved). When I did pay we were not asked if everything was ok so again I kept quiet and left. I feel that maybe during the busy days of the 'eat out scheme', it becomes acceptable that food/service is below par because of the reduced price people pay. Could be a great place, but simple things not done well.Unfortunately would not return.

excellent attempt at a return to normal, good guidelines provided and plenty of sanitiser stations throughout and good distancing available. Menu scrumptious as usual.

My hubbie and I booked for an early lunch in the garden and weren't disappointed. The whole pub has been deep cleaned, de-cluttered and spruced! There is a one way system in place, bookings only, social distancing and a soon to be launched order / pay online service for the garden which is brilliant. A new menu, including a couple of interesting vegetarian options, but also some old favourites. Even though we are both meat eaters we often limit our intake so shared a rather lovely moroccan spiced cauliflower and lentil based curry dish and good old fish and chips. As I often remove most batters, finding them too heavy and detracting from the fish, I was pleasantly surprised and ate every mouthful. We had a couple of rounds of drinks which bumped the price, mainly my drinks I have to admit due to ordering large wines but we were out and celebrating so worth it...and like I don't always order large (as my husband reminds me!). A thoroughly enjoyable experience, well done BVI team

Somewhere local to take visitors for Sunday lunch! We decided on the BVI. Hugely disappointed for a third time. We were seated at a table as far away from the warm bar area as possible, it was not busy, waited ages for any menus and ordering to be taken so long that I had to find someone. Told after some time the wine chosen wasn’t available by bored waitress who was tapping her nails on her pad waiting for us to choose something else! When the meal arrived the gargantuan parsnip on my plate was so hard it was inedible, complained and they thought it would be sorted by giving us a huge bowl of parsnips 15 minutes later! The Yorkshire puddings were flat. Had to ask for apple sauce and horseradish for our roasts This should be a given surely, condiments didn’t arrive so had to go and find the waiter again. Were given freezing cold apple sauce. Shocking service throughout and totally embarrassing as we had brought visiting friends. You expect a meal out to be better than you can cook at home but this wasn’t even that. It felt like the staff had bad attitudes and really didn’t want to be there. Will not be returning. Disappointed.

Called in with family & friends. Nearly fell over having to pay nearly £20 for 2 glasses of wine!! Surly bar staff with a couldn't care attitude! The bar was sticky and unwashed although the toilets where very good! One of 2 pubs in the area the village is very pretty but would bypass this one next time! Looks great from outside although having to walk thru a swimming pool just outside door is not a great welcome.

The Bourne Valley Inn is a very friendly pub on outskirts of the village of St Mary Bourne, you are greeted by a roaring log fire and friendly helpful staff, the food is very good, and the room was cosy and warm, a great place to go for a relaxed weekend away.

We unfortunately sat at a small table in the bar when the bar was very busy and so noisy that conversation was virtually impossible. Food was Ok but I don't think we would return.

Total disaster. 19 people traveled from all round the country for our patents annual Xmas get together booked in October. We arrived at 13.30, starters arrived at 15.00 and walked out at 15.30 as no sign of the main courses. The chef apologised but manager was simply awful. My parents have lived in the valley for 30 years and were treated appallingly.

Went here for a company event. 3 courses which we had 3 choices to pick from in advance. We were around 50 people and considering that the food quality and service was very good indeed. Highlight was chicken and vegetable pie.

Generally a nice country pub which we sometimes pop into for a drink. Went this evening - one of the coldest/most miserable/wettest days of the year and the fire wasn’t on - we just fancied having a drink and cosying up by the fire. And the guy behind the bar wouldn’t put it on, despite there being no customers! How lazy. Room for improvement where customer service is concerned.

There’s a really lovely 5 mile walk from the pub car park so we parked up and had lunch after our walk. My son chose a ploughman’s and I had a jewelled couscous salad with smoked chicken. Lovely pot of tea. All reasonably priced, service was prompt and courteous- will definitely come again.

Comfy room, everything you could expect. Nice food in the evening and really good breakfast. Friendly welcome. Only downside is noisey plumbing, you can hear other rooms usage.

Food average for the price. Pretty weird behaviour from the manageress who seemed to think that being huffy was more important than actual customer service.

We visited for bank holiday lunch. We were told there is a problem with kitchen and they stopped serving food.We sat with our drink outside and saw most other people were having food. We even saw family came after us were served food. So we went up to the bar and queried about it and we were told other people have pre-booked and there is only one chef so can’t cope with anymore order.I didn’t understand how all the other people have pre-booked food and not us and it wasn’t that busy anyway. Honestly we were the only group not eating amongst the people sat outside. It was clearly some sort of discrimination. We will not visit again.

We recently held our wedding in the Bourne Valley's beautiful barn restaurant. Everything was perfect from start to finish. Emma was incredible with helping us organise the day and guiding us through the process, especially as we kept answering "We don't know" and "We haven't thought about that" to almost every question. They were more than happy to accommodate our plans and work with us to create the atmosphere we wanted. On the day we couldn't have asked for better service. From the cleaner who took the time to say hello and wish us the best of luck, to the bar staff who served our drinks and food all day and night with grace and a smile, we just felt so looked after. The food was incredible, the chefs did and amazing job of turning our long list of things we don't like, in to a meal that everyone commented how beautiful it was. The manager Rosie deserves an extra special mention for her attention on the day, she gave us the confidence to relax and leave it to her. She and her team turned the venue from a ceremony to the most incredible woodland grotto wonderland for our dinner. There was nothing more that we could have asked for.

Service was very poor , even though there were very few customers. for a table of 8 our food came at all different times and the roast potatoes were horrible. For those prices you expect good food and at least get served. won't be returning.

We found this inn whilst travelling cross country to the New Forest and stopped off for lunch. There was a very good menu along with a specials board to choose from. The food was served promptly by very polite staff.

I booked this night away for my husbands birthday. We arrived on a glorious day with the beer garden full and the bar empty. There was a girl serving some people, she looked at us waiting at Reception with no acknowledgement at all. It took approx 5 minutes for her to finish the drinks before she then started doing something at the till - again, she looked over but with no smile, apology or acknowledgement.

We visited this evening on the spur of the moment looking for good pub food with and little bit of extra something. We’ve enjoyed many many nights at Bourne Valley Inn and it’s always one we take friends and family to when we have visitors.

Visited for the first time as had heard how good the food was. Sadly we found it to be over rated and disappointing. Hotel room we stayed in was small, had no storage or anywhere to hang out clothes. Staff looked like they didn’t want to be there (2 girls). No milk in the morning (wasn’t even asked). The worst part of all was witnessing one member of staff (female, long dark hair, black shirt, jeans) wipe cutlery with her fingers before placing it on the table for the next customer to use. Totally disgusting. Will always clean my cutlery from now on.

Been here a few times and the food and service never disappoint. Our two young children also love it as they can run around in the lovely garden, play with toys and games and books inside - lots to keep the kids entertained during the meal.

Myself and my husband had our wedding meal with just our nearest and dearest here at the BVI and it was perfect, it was everything we could have wanted and more. Our guests still talk about how lovely it was, the BBQ was amazing! Billy was great to the run up and even recommend drinks because we are not wine drinks. Thank you for making our day even more special. I can not recommend enough!

We’ve tried this restaurant a couple of times recently. Not wanting to give it a bad review I assumed the experience the first time was that the staff were having an off day. It had the feel of “cats away, mice will play”.

Great staff, lovely to sit by the fire in the bar. Restaurant area felt a bit formal to me so stayed in the bar. Food was excellent but very small portions, and not cheap either. I had the gammon and could have eaten 2 plates.

Called in for breakfast . I have visited before and found it quite nice although some of the staff can be a little curt. This time i was met with a miserable man with glasses , bellowing out orders. He handed me my order and proceeded with a very backward stereotype, a racial "joke". I don't expect to be racially abused when i am spending my hard earned money in your cafe. After his bigoted quip, he scurried off very quickly. I am glad he did as it was likely he d have had his glasses smacked off his head. Cheeky boy trying to belittle people when he's serving coffees for a living. I wont be back near the establishment as I don't support bigots.

Booked for Sunday lunch - waited an age to be seated, very pleasant environment, ordered the Sunday roast, this took 4 trips from the waitress to bring the main course - the veg, the potatoes, the gravy by the time I'd gotten all I needed the whole meal was cold - no check back, ordered dessert - the crumble that also was stone cold - again no check back, the staff were polite and helpful but seemed to lack direction and leadership and seemed more invested in the wedding which was taking place - food very underwhelming
