Bob's Seafood in Shepway

I've been going to Bob's since I was a boy (over 35 years now) and I salivate weeks before my annual visit in August... without doubt the best shellfish stand in Folkestone, if not the whole of Kent. Delicious whelks, cockles and crab every time as well as plenty of other seafood to tempt you. The ladies that run it are the salt of the earth and always friendly.

Lovely range of fresh seafood including lobster, king prawns and cockles. Very friendly server helped with my choices and hoped my lunch guests enjoyed it, which they did- hugely! Will definitely be back.

Stopped at Bobs today to pick up some mussels, lovely service by a very nice young lady. Mussels were great too. Will be back!

My dad is 84 and not a well man but wanted to visit Bob's for seafood. We drove as close as possible, so he didn't have too many gobbles to walk across. The young lady was fine. He asked about the price of cockles, and he was surprised at the price but made no real comment. The older woman who was on her phone. Swore and said " F**** well go to ....and you'll pay more." My dad did not deserve to be spoken to like that. He looked along the cabinet and wanted to go. He thanked the young girl. As we got to the corner of the stall. Something was said . By the older women, but i didn't quite hear, and they both laughed. I will never go back to such a rude person.

If you like traditional cold seafood such as whelks, prawns, brown shrimp or even lobster served simply (in a plastic container) this is the place for you. Get your self some whelks , add vinegar and pepper and eat with a wooden fork looking out over the fishing boats moored in the harbour. Perfect!

I today went to purchase some seafood, unfortunately they don’t accept card payment. The polite young girl gave us directions to the nearest cashpoint. Despite trying (there were 3 of us), as we are out of the area we could not find this. We went back to purchase a couple of tubs with the cash we had, I politely explained that we couldn’t find the cashpoint. At this point the older lady, pushed the young girl out the way; told to her move and said “you can’t miss it” and started raising her voice pointing to where it was”. My friend was In The middle of his purchase. I explained that we were out of the area. The older lady then shouted that she couldn’t have made it any clearer for me to understand. I politely said “ok there is no need to be rude”. To which she replied, shouting I was rude. I walked away, my friend and I saying thank you. She then she screamed that she had run a successful business of 50 years. There was absolutely no need for the behaviour. I feel sorry for the young girl who was clearly being tested unprofessionally and obvious deserves a raise for putting up with behaviour like that ! I can only assume she had been asked about the cashpoint several times per day, but this could be avoided if they accepted card payments. This is very disappointing, not the attitude or service I expected. Will not go back despite the whelks being delicious. Whatever happened to people being polite ?

It's always a toss up between Bobs and Chummy! At the moment Bobs is leading in the number of visits. Good seafood and the prawn cocktail perfect for wedging into a roll or small baguette!

Food well presented but i asked for pints and was curtly informed they only sell in overpriced pots of £2.50 and £5. I purchased £28 of whelks, jellied eels and a pot of brown shrimp. Also claimed to be freshly caught in their boat.. Perhaps they were but this catch wasn't todays. Fresh whelks are mucusy and leave a snotty residue on your fingers and yield easily to the bite. These were freshly frozen and were over salted and chewy but just ok in flavour. Really overpriced in my opinion and will try elsewhere next time we visit from Ramsgate.

We have been here many times as they make wonderful crab sandwiches on both white and brown bread highly recommended!

After arriving at Folkestone for the day. Going to first fish stall, I politely asked the lady behind the counter if I could try a whelk. Low and behold she gave me a dirty look and said no ( unless that was her usual look) she no you can’t I said sometimes there not tender, she said all mine our tender love. So rude we walked off . So we walked to chummys . Asked them the same question, with a reply of course you can . Atmosphere was lovely music food seats, Spent £40 there and felt compelled on passing bobs and said to to the lady whilst holding my chummys takeaway you have lost £40 for being rude. She shouted I don’t care, I said think you while holding bag up ( my pretty woman moment lol) As I walked off she came came flying out screaming at me like a fish wife lol. Lovely day out, never ever line that awful woman’s pockets .

I’ve never EVER been abused by such an awful woman before! Politely asked if I could try a welk and got screamed at! NO!!!! She flew out the side door and thought she was going to attack me! My first outing since lockdown and went home in tears! I hope she doesn’t treat all her customers the same. I really hope the owner sees this and employs some respectful staff! This woman will lose the business a lot if money with her attitude- BEWARE STAY AWAY!!!!!!

I've been getting my shellfish from Bob's for 20 years, they are without doubt the best in the business. Today was a trip down there to get some of their excellent seafood for my 84 year old Dad for his Father's Day present. I bought Jellied Eels, Whelks, Brown Shrimp and a Dressed Crab, all were as always excellent quality. I'll never go anywhere else so a 70 mile round trip drive will tell you how good the shellfish is from here.

The only place to go in Folkestone for shellfish and seafood! Friendly and knowledgeable and around for 45 years you won’t eat a better whelk, I was convinced I wasn’t a whelk fan and ended up polishing off more than my fair share! Their whelks are caught and carefully cooked by Bobs seafood and were nothing short of tender, meaty and massively moreish! Also had brown shrimp which are like gold dust on the south coast! Cockles were tasty and fresh, the only thing I would have changed would be having a wooden fork! All local business are important but this one is worth your money! I defy any non shellfish fan to give Bobs a try! You will be convinced!

Was there this morning me and my partner stopped off had a little chat with the ladies who was lovely told us about the history of the stall seafood amazing and very clean and hygienic

Sweet whelks, plump mussels and a roll mop herring for breakfast just watch out for the odd swooping gull. No dedicated seating, but do you really need to sit for a dish of cockles?

Had some cockles and mussels here yesterday they were great and fresh as alway. Young lady recommend Captains Table for fish and chip and we weren't disappointed. We will be back!

After months of lockdown, headed for my favourite shellfish stall.Now selling pots at a fiver a time which must come to at least £18-20 a pint!. Very disappointed, was served by the most rudest person I have ever had the misfortune to meet. Waste of a 30 mile one way journey. Simple, Wont be going there again!.

Always head to Bob's for a seafood treat but unfortunately today the dressed crabs were very watery obviously they had been pre frozen and not as good such a shame as I'm put off going back

I tried to get him to tell me his recipe but he refused !!! These are the very very best whelks I have I ever tasted - and being an East Ender I have checked out a lot of whelks at a lot of places.

bought a large tub of whelks today for a fiver got home and decided to see what there was well it was just over a qtr pint which makes them 20 quid a pint this is scandalous and conning people left right and centre im a cockney and was brought up on seafood but this takes the piss out of people i get a pint of welks from wards in dagenham 4.50 and they taste the same so for me it was a con never again

Cheap, but quality fresh sead food with variety of seasoning which you can choose. What I had was a small portion mix seafood with Sriracha sauce. It allowed me to try several things they sell at once :)

As seafood lovers, we were lucky to come across Bob’s Seafood in the harbour. The seafood (and we had quite a selection) was superb. Quite simply the best we have ever had in UK or abroad. There was so much to choose from and everything was beautifully clean, fresh, tasty and very good value. We were so well looked after by the very nice blond lady who served us. We loved sitting and eating on a table outside on such a beautiful day ( with the Red Arrows display thrown in for good measure!), We had such a great time there and have recommended it to everyone.

Whilst getting cold from The Smokehouse I got some cockles from here. They were lovely, fresh and clean. So much so that I went back for a second portion. They sell sandwiches such as crab sandwich. It is all sea food so don't turn up expecting to get a ham sandwich.

Good fresh seafood, especially the cockles and whelks. Stand up, take away, salt and vinegar. Good fresh stuff!

Good service and god price for the seafood i had .The cockles were very good.The dressed crab i got was very tasty and will be visiting again very soon as better than the chummys i use to visit.

Bobs is family run for over 40yrs shells are gathered locally and are the best I've ever tasted...Highly recommended

The welks I have just had were the best I have ever eaten . Locally caught, cooked this morning. Perfect taste and texture. Sweet and meaty. It does not get better than this. Everything else looked mighty good as well .

Had a trip to Folkestone last Sunday fancied some fresh crab.Bobs had claws but no fresh whole crabs so opted for a dressed crab at £6.50. Walked round the corner found fresh whole crabs at Chummys bought one at £4.50 "lady opened the crab prior to buying to show the inside was mud free".Prepared the fresh crab then made some sandwiches with both the crab "meats" the Bobs crab to be quite honest tasted like paste? plus the shell the meat was encased in was white BLEACHED?However Chummys crab was very tasty.My tip would be if you know how to dress a crab I would opt for a whole crab that way you know its just meat not stuff like breadcrumbs!

The Crab Soup is exceptional, the whelks, a good indicator of other shell fish, are always fresh. I trust these guys more than any other sea food establishment between here and Exmouth. We use nobody else.

I wish I live in Folkestone so I can get regular crab claws supply. One of the best seafood choices I have.

Stopped for a tub of cockles. Did want a dressed crab. But chap in front got the last one. Cockles were really good. Whelks looked nice not to big. Good assortment of seafood.

The taste of crab goes downhill pretty quickly as far as I'm concerned, here the crab is as fresh as it gets

Unassuming and unfussy, Bob's stall deserves its long-standing family run reputation. Good honest fresh fish. Our 4 year old would have devoured the entire stall if we'd let him.

Bobs Seafood gets 5* and that’s just for the seafood cocktail (prawns and crab flake in mayo) The bf drives me 25miles just for this, it’s amazing and I cannot recommend it enough. As a lover of seafood I have tried a few other bits from there, crayfish, which were quite rubbery and the crab claws and lobster tails which also weren’t that nice. The seafood cocktail though is worth the trip alone.

Seafood lovers paradise! I sampled quite a lot from here on my trip and the crab was divine, just watch out for the seagulls.. though we didnt actually have any issues with them at all. Location is perfect too!

went to this stall a couple of weeks ago i use to go there a lot but this year noticed the portions are so small and you are paying top prices for average seafood

Left Folkestone in 1980 when there were several seafood stalls by the harbour including Bob's. When I returned for the first time after 30 years in 2010, Bob's the only one left and his whelks are still as delicious as ever. I am back again today (2018) for my fix of Bob's whelks. Was lucky enough to get a sunny Saturday with a nice view. Nice seafood mix with few seasoning. Good price for the quality. Try to start with a small portion as it's filling 😁

By far the best seafood in folkestone , before trying anywhere else I would recommend giving bobs a go first fresh seafood caught with his own boat !

Been buying seafood here for probably 30 years+. Shame they put the price up on the seafood mix again as this was always my first choice but its still good value compared to the other stalls. Definitely the best whelks in Folkestone and the crab soup and chilli prawns are delicious.

A pot of deliciously fresh whelks for £2 - Amazing!! Terrific cockles for the same price too. If only I lived nearer.

Everytime I visit folkestone I always have a portion of these delicious whelks many other types of seafood available as well ..well established family run business

my wife and i go to folkestone about three times a year and this is always our first stop ,the sea food is really fresh and affordable not like some places,and sat out in the harbour is the best place to sit and eat it

We bought a few things from Bob’s for a meal in - the dressed crab was delicious! Good value, good selection, friendly people.

Fresh seafood at amazing prices. Lobster tail, seafood cocktails and prawns. The last one were my favourites. If you're visiting folkestone would be a shame to miss.

Delicious all the way... Whelks were fresh and small, cockles were not gritty and so delicious. Eels spot on and crab and Prawn sandwich was a awesome. LONG LIVE BRITISH SEAFOOD. Thank you independent vendors.

Me and my missus eat at Bob's most mornings for a seafood breakfast. Amazing prawns and fresh everything else. Highly rated and I'd say one of, if not the best.

An excellent seafood stall with friendly staff. this is one of our regular outings to the seaside - often just to get sea food from Bobs!Idea place for a stroll or just to sit and take in the sea air.

Of the several stalls in Folkestone this is undoubtedly the best. Bob's have their own boat so catch much of what they sell themselves. If not at sea you will see it bobbing in the harbour near to the stall.Friendly staff, good prices, nice seafood

In a town blessed with a number of extremely good seafood stalls Bobs is simply outstanding. Locally caught, with whelks cooked just 30 metres away, the flavours, value and location make this the standout seafood stall to beat them all.

It seems to be quite hard to get good whelks these days, but the whelks at this seafood shack at Folkestone Harbour are delicious. I asked where they get them, and they pointed over my shoulder at their boat. Enough said!

Good selection of takeaway seafood snacks to suit your budget. Also has a restaurant nearby. Watch out for the seagulls!

I've been sampling Bob's own caught Seafood for years now, served up by Wife Sheila.That is his boat in the picture. Great local Seafood that people quite literally travel miles for. That's no exaggeration as I have known people to travel 70 miles from London, by Taxi especially to sample Bob's Seafood, and then perhaps a couple of Beers.Wonderful experience.

The seafood from this place cannot be faulted - prawn and crab sandwiches are to die for - juicy, succulent and fresh! The staff are happy and friendly and the prices fair. Looking forward to a return visit already

We think this is the only stall which has its own boat, which gives it character. The crab sandwiches were fresh and really tasty. There was also a great selection of the usual fresh seaside shellfish.

Just passing walking around Folkestone and came across this sea food bar. All caught locally by the man. Great choice of local seafood. Friendly and knowledgeable . Purchased the crab, lobster and shellfish. Served by a very polite young lady.

Always go to Bobs when I'm in Folkestone , it is without doubt the best seafood in town. Don't take my word you must try it . If you like whelks, mussels, cockles, prawns, crab, and especially their jellied eels, served with a smile right on the harbour wall, this is for you .

Very good overall but along with many other stalls they are still flouting the law by not displaying the quantity bought for the price paid.Prawns are bought from the market by weight but sold by volume, ie pints and now with many other things by fixed price cartons, im sure any discerning buyer would like to know how much your getting.I've noticed generally that the quantity has gradually decreased since sold in cartons.ok i know they have many excuses for selling in this old traditional way but the law is the law and its about time they are pulled in line with all other retailers.

Go to bobs sea food if your looking for the best seafood mix in town I can honestly say I have it most days. Staff are very friendly and are always serving with a smile a true delight to buy from them as they also have there own boat catching local and there the only ones doing so in Folkestone a must if your visiting the harbour area!

We always stop and buy some seafood here. Friendly people selling fresh delicious offerings, try the crab soup and bread ,cockles, whelks, king prawns, dressed crabs I could go on....Situated on the stade. There are condiments at the side of the stall .From here you have a good view of the Harbour arm which is well worth a visit on Fridays and Saturdays in the warmer months.Also you can walk along to the Sunny sands from here. The view of the outer harbour is just behind you. The Stade is well worth a visit and there are two pubs if you are thirsty after a walk.Oh the stall also has its own fishing boat so go on, give this one a try.

Bob's Seafood stall on Folkstone has the best and freshest whelks and cockles anywhere on the Kent coast, and we've tried them all. However, on a cold and blustery winters day, their creamy and deliciously steaming hot crab soup with a hunk of crusty bread takes some beating. It's worth a trip to the seaside just for a bowl or two, hscrumptious! Add to all this the friendly ladies who run it just put the icing on the cake.

I'm an Aussie living here briefly and they have by far the best crab in England. Loved it! Plenty more to choose from as well

Lovely crab soup and bread, I don't have it often but really nice when I do, very creamy. Nice on a cold day. Will stop by soon for more soup when passing by.

The stall is by far the best one i've been to. they have a beautiful selection of shellfish and a great selection of fresh crabs. The sandwiches are delicious but the best thing is the homemade crab soup (winter only) its gorgeous.

Wow the crab soup is to die for..... Served with crusty bead. Add some cockles and it's heaven... Great service and always fresh...

Great place to either buy your seafood to take away or to eat at one of their outdoor tables, sitting watching the fishing boats come and go at Folkestone Harbour. Particularly excellent whelks.

We always choose Bobs seafood when down the harbour. It is always fresh and is clearly a much loved family business. I recently took a dressed crab home to have with salad and it was absolutely delicious, you definitely get what you pay for. Will continue to buy my seafood here

Very traditional all their seafood is fresh caught from their own boat, staff are friendly and have time to explain. This stall has been here for many years and long may it remain but once again why not sell the food the traditional way in pints or half pints. Mind you it is the best seafood stall on the harbour

We experienced the best crab soup ever. So light and fresh and tasty with lovely crusty bagette. My only regret is that we only ordered one between us - please try it you will not be disappointed. Also the cockles were the best I've had in a long time. We will certainly be going back to try some. The soup chef was very friendly and gave me the recipe but I am sure mine will not be half as good as hers ;)

All the food looked really nice and well presented.What we had was very nice.The staff were helpful and friendly.

Happened on Bob's by accident wandering around Folkestone harbour. There's a shed where they boil the catch after landing them, from 5 am on. Then a stall where you choose what you want from crab, lobster, whelks, cockles and the rest. The whole crab are chalked up with a price.I picked one with big claws priced at £4.50. Beautifully cooked, incredibly fresh, some of the best crab I've ever tasted. And twice the meat you'd normally get for that price.Will be back.

Good fresh seafood as one would expect. The stall apparently owns its own fishing boat too which if not providing all of the sale goods is a nice romantic touch too!Prices are reasonable and the Whelks the best I have had.

The seafood was very fresh, there was a lot of choice and the portions were generous for a very reasonable price

We love the crab, prawns and whelks. Sheila and Chris always have a smile and all the produce is ultra fresh because the seafood is fished by the family from FE74 the fishing trawler which you can see in the harbour.

We went to Folkestone for the reason of getting seafood as we'd been at Hythe for the day.went to bobs the whelks are the best I've tasted but are extremely overpriced as is the rest of the seafood.

The food is always good here with reasonable prices. You can even have lobster if you want or just settle for a dish of welks. It's better if the weather is good as there is no shelter.
