Booked in advance. Table ready on time Waitress extremely friendly and polite. We were advised there was a massive table in but we were still a little disappointed when it took 1 hour and 5 mins for the mains to arrive The starter arrived after about 30 minutes The starter was amazing. Great portion and super crispy fish. My husband’s ribs were a good size, chips decent and a little pot of coleslaw Unfortunately my salmon (£24) came and the size of the salmon was wholly inadequate given the price and even more so as they were aware how long we had waited. I pointed it out ( they agreed ) and I was given a fantastic replacement 15 mins later but my husband had finished eating. Hardly the idea of sharing a meal together. I was offered a free drink but as I was on squash I saw little point. I had hoped I would be offered a goodwill discount but sadly this was not the case. I was not going to ask as I shouldn’t have to. So overall wonderful food let down by the chef and waiting staff letting it go out when it was clearly an inadequate portion. I have only dropped one star for the issue we incurred as the food quality, staff and ambience were great.

The food was excellent, but the service was so chaotic. People arriving with bookings and nowhere for them to sit . It took 20 minutes to get a menu and more importantly a drink. We were told they were short staffed and although you understand, just give your customers a drink to keep them happy!

Excellent! From the friendly welcome, service and quality of food. A really enjoyable meal in the heart of Salcombe. The monkfish and king prawn Thai curry, lemon sole, ribs and wings and kids pasta were all delicious. My daughter loved the brownie sundae! Well worth a visit- but be sure to book! This place is not surprisingly very popular.

Very popular restaurant, Make sure you book a table Having failed to get a table on Friday , we were lucky enough to get a walk in early Saturday evening There is a very decent menu, which is enchanted by a full specials board Both my wife and I opted for the ribeye steak Wow, was it good Both steaks were cooked perfectly. We both agreed the best steaks we had ever had. The chips were delicious as well The best meal we had in Salcombe by far and we would definitely go back Highly recommend

Lovely place amazing food shocking service! My wine glass was covered in lipstick. Our order was taken to the wrong table and the waitress just left us to move it to our table ourselves leaving us short of cutlery and not asking us if we needed any condiments. It’s so sad when the head of house staff let down an amazing kitchen.

I approached the hosts stand and asked if they took bookings and was told that they didn’t it was walk ins only (pretty much the whole of Salcombe has this policy). Ok no problem, we were due back in town a few days later and was planning an early dinner and with two children in tow that would probably work out quite well. Fast forward 3 days later, and at 5.30pm I went back to the hosts table to ask if they had a table for 6 adults and 2 children. After being pointedly ignored by the host who was determined not to make eye contact with me she finally conceded that she might have to do something about my presence. Upon asking for a table, I was advised that they were fully booked, I responded saying that I was told it was walk ins only 3 days previous. Her response “Ah yes these are pre pandemic bookings” are you serious?! So in short they don’t take bookings but they actually do… in fact the whole of Salcombe do take bookings however I think you have to be in the know or a local/ regular, as when we went off to find somewhere else to eat they were all fully booked despite having walk ins only policy… go figure! Won’t be returning to Salcombe!

Before starting my review proper I would like to make it clear that my comments below refer solely to the upstairs restaurant section of the Kings Arms/KA, the Boatswain’s Brasserie. There are two distinct elements to the KA and this is the one to avoid.Hearing a group discussion about the possibility of us booking a table at the KA for dinner one night a member of the bar staff asked if we liked fish. When we replied that two of us did, he suggested that, rather than booking a table in the downstairs restaurant, we booked upstairs at the Bosuns Brasserie. His recommendation was based on the fact that the chef upstairs was an exceptional fish cook who only used the finest and freshest of ingredients.Based on this recommendation we booked and, having eaten some excellent fish dishes at the KA from their lunchtime menu we were eagerly anticipating what their specialist fish chef could do if this was just ‘the run of the mill’ cooking. Sadly, it all went very wrong.A couple of positives, the room itself is nicely appointed with some interesting photos/prints on the wall and our greeting was friendly and our order was taken promptly without us feeling rushed. The menu certainly looked interesting with non-fish/seafood eaters also catered for. One menu idea that I haven’t seen before is their fish pans and fish platters which allow the diner to mix and match different fishes, sauces and sides. A good concept only let down by truly appalling executionThe first course set a couple of alarm bells ringing. Firstly, it took a while longer to come out that we had anticipated. The second issue is probably connected to the first. Some of the party had ordered the ham hock terrine. Whilst the terrine was tasty the jelly surrounding the meat had started to melt which is not appetising and hinted that it had been sat on the pass for too long before being served. If we thought the wait for the first course wasn’t good it was as nothing compared to our wait for the main one. By the time our food arrived there were four distinctly disgruntled people sat round the table. Was it worth the wait, most definitely not.I had opted for the three fish pan and had chosen monkfish (average), hake (overdone) and surf clams. Not being exactly sure what they were I Googled ‘surf clam’. One of the suggested search questions was “What does surf clam taste like”; let’s just say after eating them here it is a question that I still couldn’t answer, they were virtually tasteless as presented. The saucing of the fish was problematical on several levels. I had opted for the Napolitana sauce guessing it was a tomato based sauce, which it was. It was rank. I gave some to my son to taste and his immediate reaction was ‘that tastes like it’s a cheap bottled sauce’. I will give the cook (based on his performance that night I will not grace him with the title chef) the benefit of the doubt and say it was a homemade sauce using tinned tomatoes as a base. No problem there but please add some sugar to disguise the metallic taste you sometimes get using tinned tomatoes (or ready prepared garlic come to that). The second problem with my sauce was that when my fish pan was served there was already a significant amount of garlic butter in it. No problem with that, it goes well with fish A combination of garlic butter and a poorly prepared tomato sauce, no way. Odd, tick, bad, ditto. My wife had the duck a l’orange for her main course. Even allowing for the fact the inordinate wait had not helped she was less than impressed saying the dish managed to be both bland and odd. I can’t comment on the duck but I tried the sauce and wished I hadn’t, it was one of the strangest iterations of orange sauce I have ever eaten, almost like a weird stewed marmalade, not good. At no time during our meal did the waitress come over either to ask us how our food was or to inform us that there was going to be a delay in serving us. Timing that night was definitely an issue. Part way through the main course the cook came out of the kitchen to offer us a form of apology linked to a couple of lame excuses. The first was that there had been a large number of walk-ins that night. A couple of points, surely those who had booked should have had priority and, more importantly, whilst we were there at no point was the room more that half full, if that. If we had been a large party that might have acted in mitigation for the chef but there were only four of us.So being overwhelmed by customers is an excuse for poor service that will not wash in those circumstances. The other excuse was that he had a ‘bad leg’ that night. No. I can’t work that one out either. When we came to leave the member of our party who was paying that night informed the waitress that, given the poor service and food, he was only prepared to pay approximately 60% of the bill. To their credit the management of the KA must have realised that the performance that night was not good and the offer was accepted without demur.Final analysis, please try the KA but go downstairs, upstairs is crap.

Boatswains was a favourite last time we visited Salcombe when it was in its previous location and was very keen to try The Kings Arms. We found the tables upstairs in the fish restaurant too close together, food excellent however we both ordered a 'proper main course' rather than smaller fish dishes, and am not sure how popular this will prove to be. Also no menu and difficult to keep reading the black board once you have sat down and feel as if you are straining your neck to check out the menu (appreciate though that the menu can change daily depending on the fish) A pudding menu would be appreciated rather than the waitress trying to remember everything on the menu. Loved the downstairs, the decor and spacing of tables just right. Service great. Food lovely. Would book the downstairs on our next visit to Salcombe

After a complete refurbishment and new ownership we decided to visit this restaurant, hopefully to find great improvements, as the place badly needed it. Sadly we were very disappointed, bar staff on mobiles, drinking and eating behind bar. When requesting a table in the restaurant the reaction of “ might have don’t know if we still serving “ at 830 very bizarre. Someone eventually decided they would serve us, we were seated in the restaurant which appears similar to before, but with a new floor and furniture. Ordered ribeye and mussels, both ok but as with the bar staff found the service staff very unprofessional in appearance, attitude and knowledge of the menu. Maybe being a tourist trap they get away with these standards, but it will be a long time before we enter their lair again.

The restaurant was surprisingly busy for a Monday evening which was a good sign. Disappointed that there was not much on the specials board, but main menu was sufficient. Both the monkfish and scallop starters were delicious. Fish and chips tasty and Goan fish curry was good but lacked depth of flavour (felt like it was fish cooked separately with a curry sauce on top and mussels on top of that) rather than a dish that had been cooked as ‘one’. Good service and nice atmosphere.

We were introduced to this restaurant by friends who love it- now we know why! Staff were exceptional throughout and- very rare- I could easily have eaten every item on the menu. The whitebait starter was super crunchy tasty and Goan monkfish curry was heavenly. The wine so good we had another bottle and the atmosphere fab. Only two words to say- book now! :-)

Visited September 2018. Welcomed by lovely staff and seated at a good table.Quick drinks served and then we were spoilt for choice from an interesting menu. Chose fish specials. Our starters and mains were beautifully presented and extremely tasty. This was our best meal during a week of eating out in Salcombe, and the ability for a small kitchen to turn out such good food is to be commended. Bonus of no dogs while you are eating as well!

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit for dinner. The service was efficient friendly and well informed, the food was exceptional and probably the best quality we've enjoyed locally. Lots of fish specials and plenty of other choices. All dishes we had were delicious and reasonably priced.

Had the pleasure of discovering this little gem during a two night stay in Salcombe. Menu looked appealing so thought we'd book a table. Good decision as the food was superb with an amazing choice of interesting fish dishes. My wife had a monster of a Lemon Sole while I had the wonderful John Dory. Puddings were great too......can highly recommend the chocolate pot! We will return,

We've toyed with not writing this review as the venue is small, has limited covers & we never want to not be able to get in! We wanted fresh fish for a birthday dinner. We could have chosen 12+ dishes such was the variety of straight off the boat options. We had garlic prawns & monkfish to start with - I hear the monkfish scampi is out of this world, but chef was wonderfully accommodating to produce a small portion of a main dish - we were both blown away. Specials not on the board were our next steps, turbot with brown shrimp and sea bass with crab; extraordinarily devised & executed, seemed so simple, but flavours like I've not tasted in years. Hats off to the staff & chef - superb & a place I hope stays hidden.......!!

It has never ceased to amaze me that Salcombe has so few quality restaurants but this one is as near as you will get to Michelin star food. Delicious food, simply cooked and beautiful presented by friendly staff. If you love fish this is the place to eat. Hidden away down a little alleyway off the main street it is in a different league from the pub food that seems to be the main attraction in Salcombe.

We went here as the last meal of our family holiday and were hoping for something special. We weren't disappointed at all! All staff were very friendly and knowledgeable, and there were lots of specials to tempt us with. Speciality is fish as you would expect, and the desserts were to die for! Booking in advance highly recommended, it was fully booked and they had to turn people away. Only open evenings for info. Fantastic place for a special meal , strongly recommended. Thankyou!

Specials board a delight of great sea food dishes. Restaurant is tucked away down small alley but worth seeking out! This could be the great sea food restaurant Salcombe needs but that does not seem to be the direction they are taking judging by the main menu choices. Attentive service and and good wine list. We enjoyed it.

We had the most beautiful meal in this lovely restaurant and not too expensive either! I had Cajun chicken which was delicious although this is predominantly a fish restaurant so the fish dishes on the menu were amazing.

We had the best meal of our holiday so far in this restaurant. Great menu - fish, meats and vegetarian - sharing platters also offered. We ate the ribs and they were amazing. So so tender with the meat falling off the bone. Best ribs ever. Hoping to return for one of the fish dishes. The pudding menu looked amazing but we were too full. Really generous portion sizes. Lovely staff as well. We will definitely be returning. Thank you!

I work locally just a few doors down the road in a local opticians and frequent this lovely little cafe fairly often for lunch. I usually get a sandwich from their deli counter and they keep me coming back. I have tried a number of different options and none of them have disappointed. In the winter I especially like their soup of the day which is very well priced. I love the Mediterranean counter and often purchase a pot of Dolmades. If you're in the area I would recommend going here for lunch, you will be glad you did

We realise that this restaurant cannot provide a large menu especially during the autumn /winter but on our evening the fish choice was not on (replaced with a lazy prawn dish) and out of two desserts the crumble was also not available! Feel this is lazy as there is so much fish available locally and the excuses to not provide an apple crumble is in fact rather lazy from the kitchen. If you only want to offer pizzas and burgers, fine but don’t disappoint people with omissions.

We stayed here for close location to the polar Express train ride, excellent location, excellent staff service, also had a meal which was great food and breakfast, would definitely recommend and would stay again. Thank you.

My family and I had a fantastic and reasonably priced meal at the Imperial on Saturday. The food was tasty, plentiful and well presented - and the young waitress who served us was smiley and friendly. Will definitely return.

Dropped in for a quick lunch. Expensive for what it is. For example a small piece of frittata and a very small salad for nine ounces odd. Went home and had toast to supplement. Disappointing as had heard good things.
