I'm well aware you pay a premium for food at these places, but this is something else. £9 for a terrible sandwich, packet of crisps and a water. Quality of other food is alright, portions are tiny yet price is inflated. Avoid.

Disappointing! We felt there could have been more choice but I guess that will depend on how busy they think they will be. My main concern, however, was the slow, slow service. I ordered fish and chips which seems to have pleased many reviewers. I don't know how hot it was when it was served onto the plate (if they know that they aren't that quick why use metal plates. They may be in keeping but they conduct the food's heat away quickly) but by the time we'd waited to pay then found our table it was luke warm. Really not so very nice! This was the second time we'd used the restaurant this year. Last time was also a let down but, like another reviewer, we thought we'd try again, that was a mistake. I don't think that we'll give them a third go!

We visited the restaurant three times on are trip. The first day it was really good we had coffee in the morning and came back for lunch. Staff where pleasant and friendly, the only issue was the card machine was down instead of telling everyone when they got to the till/counter why not have a sign up and signpost to the free cash point on sight, the same at lunch too but had no complaints on this day. The second day was like walking into a completely different restaurant. The staff were unpleasant and really unorganised on what they where doing. The system needed more order like a better queuing system as it was confusing and chaos, i don’t think the staff could cope with the rush. The staff at the front where working in the back which doesn’t seem hygienic and hair should also be tied back. The third day we just went in for coffee as we weren’t spending the whole day but the coffee time has been an okay time before. This was the best day out of the three. It was calm and the staff on the coffee stand seemed happier as someone else’s was in charge. I think this is because the women in charge the last two days before who’s name I don’t know but had curly hair wasn’t there. This lady didn’t really do much expect just stand on the till and just walk round telling people things like about the cash point where a sign would have been better or walking round asking questions and making people feel uncomfortable and seemed to just cause more chaos to everything and not actually helping the queue would have gone down quicker if she stuck to the till. The person on charge Friday who I think was man seemed to be actually helping out. The food choices for adults are poor for the price they are. They would do better making some of the children meals in to adult options this would he highly successful. The biscuits was a little soggy and tangy on the first day I think they been out for a while as on Friday I got a fresh one as they was laying them out and it was much nicer. So I think something needs to be done about this. However the nachos which I ate were fine but overpriced. The restaurant area is okay nothing special. They could do with just adding more tables and reorganising better. Also they need a indoor picnic as lot of people who hadn’t brought food from the restaurant was eating inside. Overall it was average I think it just depends what day you go but it fills a hole when exploring around.

Boathouse7 at the Dock Yard did not disappoint. The fish and chips was spot on. Crispy batter, cooked just right. The highlight of the experience was the service from the friendly Irish Lady Karen. Nothing was too much trouble for her, as well as making a fuss of our children. We will be back and recommend to friends and family just for the service alone. Thanks for an enjoyable lunch.

Came here for lunch with my family of 4, all was well until I went up to order coffees and I overheard a lady with curly hair complaining about my autistic child making noise in the restaurant. I heard her making fun of him to other work colleagues, she then made me feel very uncomfortable while trying to order my coffees. Food was also disgusting and cold, cake tasted like it had been out for 2 weeks. Will NOT be returning! And maybe some training should be given to the lady with the curly hair!!!

Another excellent lunch. Lovely selection of hot food - the children's meal are very good value and a great portion. You can even just have a portion of fries, but there were also some lovely smaller dishes eh, loaded wedges, sausage rolls, pigs in blankets... Cakes and hot drinks are delicious. However the best part for us is the staff! We only make it here 2 or 3 times a year, but EVERY time the manageress recognises us and has a chat. She is also so organised - constantly overseeing/ supporting wherever needed. Card machines were down, and very busy till, but she had it all running like clockwork. Also an amazing lady clearing and washing the tables. She was a proper waitress, looking after customers, while still clearing our table so we could enjoy our hot drinks after. Really lovely warm experience, in what can be a cold day out in December!

Whilst I have enjoyed the occasional cake here, my first - and last - sojourn to the hot food counter was a disaster! I was shocked at the price (£11.50 for a chilli con carne). Nevertheless, I was very hungry so I ordered one. The main check out was closed so I had to queue up at the cakes and drinks counter to pay. There was a long queue of customers, ordering cakes and coffee, the latter taking a long time to make. I asked the lady serving if I really had to queue there with hot food. She gave the unsympathetic one word answer, 'Yes!' Eventually, upon feeling the chilli with the back of my hand and realising it was too cold to enjoy eating, I put the meal on a nearby counter and left. I walked up to The Mary Rose café, where I was greeted with a friendly smile by 'Rachel'.

One side of the batter was thicker than the fish! Chips were like cardboard, hard, tasteless and lukewarm. The food was completely inedible. We all left most of it. The fourth member of our party had a Pizza which was passable. The bill was in excess of £40 - a total rip off. We will return to the Dockyard again which everybody really enjoyed but next time we will go to Gunwharf Quays (5 minute walk) where you can choose from 30 odd restaurants. I would strongly recommend other visitors do the same. There were no healthy eating options and a dearth of vegetables and salad. It was fish and chips, pizza, pasta or Pie and Chips.

My family and I visited Boathouse No 7 for a spot of lunch on April 6th. We have visited the dockyard on many occasions, as with being Portsmouth residents with children it has always been a great attraction, but have never stopped for lunch before. Our first experience was a lovely lady called Karen, who warmly greeted us at the front door and was full of smiles and very helpful. I can’t express how lovely it was to have such a warm welcome in a world where a lot of customer service staff make you feel you are an inconvenience! Karen explained what food was on offer, as with having children of different ages, it can sometimes be a challenge to cater for everyone. We chose a couple of pizzas for the children and two portions of fish and chips for ourselves. Considering this was a self service restaurant the food was pretty top notch, the kids enjoyed it and polished it off! Although it was busy in the restaurant the place was clean and tidy which is another big plus point for me. As we were leaving we saw Karen again and she asked us if we enjoyed our meals and wished us a great day... great food, great location and a member of staff who had the right balance of being helpful without being ok pushy. Will most defiantly visit the restaurant again on our next visit. Keep up the great work!

We are returning customers and during our day out to the Dockyard on Sunday (24th March) we had no hesitation about where to stop for lunch. We ate in the Boathouse 7 restaurant which didn’t fail to compliment our great day. The restaurant was very busy but we were assisted to find a table and the staff were clearly working very hard. The variety and standard of food available was perfect – everyone within our group was well catered for. The pizza was yet again a hit with the children (one of the main reasons for visiting!) and the other options were ideal for the adults. All the staff were very helpful but the bubbly, Irish lady named Karen stood out as going above and beyond and made us feel very welcome. We were very pleased to see her there when we arrived and as always she was very warm and welcoming. She chatted to the children about their day and clearly loved being in the restaurant – enjoying the venue as much as us and not just because it was her job!

Visited the historic dock on 23/3/19, great family day out, had lunch here 19.90 for 2 pukka pie type chicken and ham with chips, the pie was tasteless and the chips were dreadful. How this gets a high rating is beyond me, if we go again we won’t be eating there

A wonderful restaurant serving main meals, snacks and coffee & cakes. Good value for money, the homemade pizzas are THE best! If you just fancy a snack the cakes and tray bakes are fab, especially the cream teas! Ooo and they're licensed too selling wine and bottled Mary Rose ale. They also have a nice selection of foodie gifts great for taking home for family & friends.

My 5 year daughter and I came to the dockyard every Monday for 4 years then every term time since she started school. The one element of the day she looks forward to is her lunch which we both very much enjoy but more than the food we enjoy going to this restaurant because of the welcome we get from Karen. We are always remembered and she treats us as if we are the most important people to her at that very moment. She is very friendly, bubbly but remains professional being a great embassador for local tourism whilst delivering outstanding customer care.

We ate at the Boathouse 7 restaurant during our visit to the Victorian Festival of Christmas. We ate a lovely lunch and were extremely impressed with the quality and variety of food on offer. The festive theme in the restaurant complimented the Festival and the staff were working extremely hard at a very busy period. The Irish lady with curly hair had an infectious personality and was very welcoming. She stood out as a great character and clearly took pride in her work and was enjoying the Festival as much as us.

We would highly recommend the restaurant for the food, service and atmosphere. We also echo what others are saying about the Irish, curly haired lady. She clearly stood out for quite a few of us as a very warm and welcoming character!

It’s nice a clean large restaurant with lots of tables and high chairs available. We definitely be returning!

The cafe is situated right behind the main historic dockyard reception area and has a great view out towards HMS Warrior and Spinniker Tower. Although there’s a large restaurant further inside the dockyard, a number of other cafes are closed due to the current Covid situation but it’s quieter here as most visitors head straight on to the dockyard attractions. Not sure about opening times as it closed for a period in the afternoon whilst we were there - not sure if it was due to staffing or some other issue?

My partner and I went in on Saturday 20th July to escape the busy food festival happening in southsea . There was one miserable looking women serving so took quite a while to get served. A few draught beers including Guinness wasn’t available so opted for Neck Oil didn’t realise it was £7.20 a pint !! I thought it was a bit steep ! As it had started raining we decided to get another drink no one serving at all at the bar , people were waiting , another couple left and so did we .

Never been to the spice island before, certainly wasn't disappointed. 8 of us went for a family birthday, 7 roast dinners and a Korean chicken burger. Right from arriving the staff team were friendly, accommodating and helpful. Sam took our orders at the bar. We ordered food and drinks and expected to wait a while as it was Sunday afternoon service, but the food arrived quickly and efficiently. Everything was just as we ordered and was beautifully cooked and very tasty. I had 28 day aged roast beef with cabbage, cauliflower cheese, roast potatoes, carrots, (extra) Yorkshires and gravy. Beef was absolutely superb, soft tasty and melted in your mouth. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals and the service was great. We were quite demanding as we had a birthday cake, balloons and all the associated bits to go with them, but our servers Kerry and Collette couldn't do enough for us and made the meal a pleasure. Many thanks to Sam, Kerry, Collette and the other two young gents (sorry i didnt get your names!) who helped us out, brilliant. Only thing i could fault is that at the time we visited the coffee machine was broken! There's great views over the harbour and lots of seating outside too, a great walk along the hot walls or on round to Gunwharf; definitely recommend a refreshment stop here.
