Boat And Railway is a fantastic little pub and restaurant with wonderful staff. We stop in most days when we are at a festival across the road, and are welcomed like family. Great food, reasonably priced, good beer selection, and a canalside covered terrace and function room. Worth a visit if in the area.

Located on the side of the canal, this pub was a pleasure to visit on a hot day. Sat outside and had Sunday lunch. Excellent value for a roast at £7.95 and a good choice of vegetables served in separate dishes. Meat tender and good flavours. Beer also excellent and friendly service. Well worth a visit and will definitely return.

While on a canal boat trip we stopped beside the Boat and Railway for some lunch. We got a great welcome from the barmaid and enjoyed a lazy lunch, fish and chips cooked perfectly. After a few beers and wines we went back to the boat for a lie down and returned for dinner. We had a warm salad off the specials board, again delicious. By this time the pub was much busier but the dogs were still welcome and the same barmaid was still cheery. Well worth mooring here if you’re on the canal.

Booked a table & asked to be in large dining room overlooking canal as expected Saturday evening to be busy.. Upon arrival room was in darkness & when said had booked we had choice of sitting outside or the snug. We choose the snug as outside was beautify setting overlooking canal but inevitably smokers. Place was and remained quiet for a Saturday night and more drinkers than people eating. However the menu was great and very reasonably priced. Food cooked to order and could not fault meals. Well worth the money. Only choice of three desserts though which we did not try. Only one lady doing bar and restaurant serving so probably a good job wasnt too busy! But was very efficient and lovely. Beautiful settling overlooking the canal even from the snug with door open. Do hope the new manager can encourage more diners and reopen the larger dining room. Nevertheless worth a visit and good value for money.

Visited with friends recently and noticed that it had changed hands from a previous visit. Still a great place for a Friday night meal. This time we located ourselves in the snug close to the main bar. The staff serving us were really pleasant and friendly. We ordered our drinks and later our food. We chose the 10 oz Hammond with egg and pineapple, hunters chicken and a cheese tart with mash. All meals came out on time and were delicious and offered both quality and value. For 4 of us the total bill was £45.70 including 4 pints and 2 lemonade. This is fantastic. The location near to the canal is beautiful. The pub does offer the terrace in the summer months and a newly built restaurant at the side. The people who now own this and run it are excellent at what they do. We will certainly be coming back soon.

I have to let everyone know about this hidden gem. It's a traditional country pub with good food and beer. 5 mins from J5 M5 and well worth popping in. The place and staff are genuine, none of the chain pub plastic smiles. There is a great range of outstanding food on the menu. They do a two for one menu at lunchtime which is incredibly cheap. It's warm always. It's friendly. The staff and locals are lovely and it's right on a really pretty stretch of the canal. If you smoke it's far more pleasant than looking at a brick wall to watch the ducks swimming. If you like ducks it's worth taking some bread to feed them. Give it a try you won't be disappointed.

My husband had the lasagne and it looked well presented and he said he tasted nice. My dinner was a different matter I ordered the Steak and Ale Pie, chips, peas and gravy. The gravy was a solid mass and the staff were helpful, taking it away but by the time they returned with hot thinner gravy, the rest of the dinner was cold. The pie pastry was tough and the filing dry. Such a shame as the barmaid was lovely but rushed off her feet. We were so disappointed we left.

Me and my girlfriend stopped for a late lunch on the way back from a day out; the boat serves food all day and had 2 for 1 meals available until 5pm. It was fairly standard pub food, I chose gammon & egg, my girlfriend had cajun chicken, both with chips. Food was quite good, decent portion size and overall was quite good value (cost around £17 - £18 for the two meals, two pints of lager and a lemonade); not somewhere that we would go for an evening meal out but good for when you want a typical bar meal. The boat is on the side of a canal, when we were there it was quite cool and overcast but we can imagine it'd be lovely sat out at the back on a nice summer day; it's quite narrow at the back though so tables and chairs are a bit limited if it's a busy day. The pub has a large room at the side which is a sports bar; sky tv, pool table and darts. We went in around 3pm on a Monday afternoon so it was very quiet but we can imagine it being much busier at weekends. We'll probably visit again but it'll be when we have some sunny and warm weather to enjoy sitting outside next to the canal.

A group of 4 of us went to eat here last night (Saturday 10th), we didn't get to as we stumbled upon what appeared to be a plot from Eastenders or some other Soap Opera. We got there only to find there was nobody attending the bar, we were told the bar maid was outside having a fag so we took a seat in the little room off the main bar and waited. All of a sudden an argument broke out in the bar between 2 men one of which seemed hell bent on causing a fight with language that was disgusting, a woman then came over (we assumed to diffuse the situation) and joined in the argument using language that would have made the hardest of Dock workers blush, we were told that she actually worked there so decided that if that is how the staff behaved we were better off out of there so decided to leave and went elsewhere.I can't really comment on food or drink as we never got to sample either.

2 Days before Christmas..... no sign of a barmaid, no sign of a fire in the fireplace and 4 sad individuals sat all on their own with their Christmas hats on. Hurrah!!! the barmaid arrives with her coat on to keep out the cold "will you be eating with us" she said, probably one of the best decisions we ever made not too. But wait a minute another member of staff arrives who then spent the whole time on the 'phone with his back to the only victims. A Banks's Beer Pub, the bitter was off.... try the Marston's she said, - it came out like cough mixture. Another punter tries the beer..... Not Good. This pub deserves all it gets, no customers. Despite only living a few miles away we hadn't been here for a few years so given the opportunity to travel along the canal on with our friends we decided to stop in and see how it fared to other local pubs.We moored up and went in for a drink, we were greeted by a way OTT barmaid who insisted on calling me 'gorgeous' or 'babe'(comments better used on much younger customers i'm sure). We both went for the Empire beer which was very well kept and was a really nice pint, whilst we were sat there we couldn't help but notice that the barmaid enjoyed a little drink of her own(or several) and when we wanted another drink we had to disturb her from her outside cigarette break to serve us(she never washed her hands). We decided we would come back and eat later in the evening. We came back in at around 7.50 and lo and behold the barmaid from earlier was still behind the bar only this time she was drinking shots and was definitely worse for wear. To escape the feral kids that seemed to treat the bar area like a playground we took a table in the back room to escape from the madness. The menu was a very generic pub menu with little to excite, however we noticed at the bar a sheet of paper with 'Specials' on it, we asked if they were available and we were told yes.We opted for the Homemade Spicy Chilli which came with rice, garlic bread and tortilla chips and it was fantastic! The flavours were amazing and it had a bite to it that made my eyes water. We left just before 9pm and were told to 'have a great night'(well, slurred) by the barmaid. We will be back again for more Chilli, hopefully with sober staff next time!!!

This pub has changed hands a few times over the years, was run into the ground by previous owner which destroyed its reputation in a flash. Am pleased to say that the new owners have done a great job at bringing it back! Beer is well kept and reasonably priced! Nice to see that they concentrate on the locals as when the boat trade ends its us that keep it going. Haven't eaten there so cant comment on that. Shame its not a Calvary anymore but guess that's Marstons for you! Worth a visit if your passing, nice pint, quiet relaxed atmosphere and good company.

I travel across the country and visit public houses often. It is very rare to find a local pub offering various ales and a good selection of other ciders, lager. The staff always greet you with a smile and greeting weather a local or new face walking in, never receive a deathly hush but more of a 'hello' and 'welcome' Food dropped one point because being a Marston's pub the landlord is restricted to trying home new recipes which I know is what would be welcomed.

Stopped here on the last night of our canal boat holiday. Had been warned by another canal boat that some of the beer was off. Ordered two sharing starters and four main courses. The service was very chaotic and the owner even said so and thought it was funny! One of the starters arrived with one of the mains, which we sent back and asked for the other starter. After a couple of minutes another waitress arrived and asked if we would have our main courses with the starters as the chef had cooked them! Or they would have to try and keep them warm and so wouldn't be very nice! So we took them. the food was OK but just that. Tried to order coffee to be told they stopped serving coffee at 9pm and had cleaned the machine down. The female staff were generally pleasant and helpful but the male bartender had an attitude that if you weren't a local you could go some where else! Great location, really really badly run!

My wife and I were in the district for 3 nights and were delighted on night #2 to find this little gem of a pub. On the first night it seemed a bit like the Faulty Towers of old because the boss seemed to be running very fast to keep up with trade and seemed to have limited support from a single, lovely young barmaid. Anyway, on our first visit, we ordered the gammon steaks for each of us and were served with meals like this: The gammon was simply smashing in flavour, the meals were probably 11 or 12 chips too big!!! Then, the other night, "her ladyship" had a korma while I had a steak burger and both meals turned up hot, properly cooked and my burger in particular was extremely "steaky".It seemed to us that this was a small, local "boozer" cum "restaurant" in small letters. BUT, just about everybody spoke and/or acknowledged us as we moved around the pub. You don't get that where I live and many of the locals could be seen taunting/teasing/enjoying the landlord's company and service.I've seen other reviews on Trip Advisor and wonder whether, for example, "Ex-Hotel-Inspector" realises that sometimes things simply go wrong. Maybe rating a pub as less than 1 Star is not really sensible when in fact there may have been a slip in service. Oh, I don't know, maybe the chef threw himself in the canal that night so food was not available. My rating, however, is based upon what we had as consumers on a day when things were obviously going right.Real ales. Beautiful terrace. Smashing locals - just a place that we feel we could go and live there!Regarding ratings below for food and value we were amazed to find that we could get 2 meals for £12.00 during certain hours/days of the week. But, whatever prices, most people compare with the likes of Wetherspoon's, Lloyds etc. but really, we are convinced that my wife's curry probably came from the exact same source as used by many another pub chain and very nice too because of that. Star ratings here are a bit fiddly because of different prices at different times but really, this is a pub not to be missed. That was the "pubby" bit. We were delighted to find free (slowish) wifi and while we awaited ourt food we looked looked up some of the pictures and signs on the walls in the bar. Clun Castle and lots of other mid-1960's trains were represented - go on you "spotters" have a look!

Walked past with the dog about 5:30pm, kitchen fans going and signs all around offering great food all day until 8:00pm. Back at the boat, tried to 'phone to check but all the listed numbers were unobtainable - should have been a sign. The 3 of us arrived at 7:36pm to be told they stopped serving at 7:30pm, despite the huge sign by the door which said food served until 8:00pm! Barmaid asked the "chef" if he would do 3 meals, kitchen fans still going, but the answer was "no". About 4 or 5 people in the bar - no wonder, places like this deserve to go bust. Don't bother stopping - unfortunately 1 star is the minimum I can leave - 1 too many in my view.

This is a very nice restaurant and the food is excellent. After your meal you can sit outside with the lovely view of the canal side. It is worth a visit and a very unique experience for oversea's visitors.. The little bar area is nice and cosy and our oversea's visitor was very impressed.

We stopped there and the first thing we noticed was a sign saying "Dogs Welcome, People Tolerated". At that our dog pulled me into the pub. We had a warm welcome from the landlady. The beer and food were excellent. Well worth a visit!

This great little pub is In a fantastic location at the side of the Worcester and Birmingham canal. It has changed hands several times in recent years but has finally got the management it deserves. The cleanliness and decoration has improved 100% and the menu is varied, well cooked and served. Good choice of ales and quiz night every Sunday. Perfect for boaters, walkers and cyclists. Highly recommended!

Very nicely located pub right alongside the canal. We also noticed a caravan site nearby so good for a night halt too. The staff are very pleasant and eager to help.

I used to visit the Biat and Railway a few times a year for a lovely carvers but did not realise it had changed hands. I visited last Sunday with my family and walked in at 1pm and the entire restaurant was empty! It should've been a sign!We were the first people to eat there that day, but the tables were all dirty from previous eaters!!!The skirting boards were filthy and I don't know when the floors last had a vacuum as there were bits all over and it clearly wasn't from that day! The waiting staff tried really hard and the food was extremely cheap but mediocre in taste! I was just shocked that the whole place needed a really good wipe around and this is generally off putting! Tea towels left in an open room along with staffs jackets and a mop left in a child's high chair!!! The location and setting of this restaurant right by a beautiful canal side should be perfect... But unfortunately, I'm sorry to say it isn't!
