Block has a cool, vibrant vibe with a comfortable inviting garden area out the back. If you're lucky you might catch a Tech-Noir set!

The best venue in Brighton for consistently putting on good DJs, great food and supplying the best cocktails. A family friendly atmosphere that my family genuinely love. My "go to" venue for a safe space for my kids. Never drama. Just good vibes.

We decided to come here before the Easter bonnet parade and drag race. Never been before , liked the way place has been done up, is small but adds to atmosphere. We had a selection of flat breads and baked Camembert to start with . Really nice flavours and nice and light. We both had block beef burger. Lovely and hit the spot , very filling. Service was good as mega busy they coped well. Service was nice and attentive

Breakfasts are £6.50 each (£19 if you want bottomless bucks fizz or bloody Mary's). The food took a while to arrive but the staff were very friendly. Decor was unique and someone was having a haircut in the middle of the the bar (?), but worth a visit.

We stopped coming to the Block some time ago as the service had always been atrocious. Good news! it got better! There was a really good vibe at the Block this weekend. It was late afternoon, there was a dj on the decks & the beer garden was full. Block now takes cards - which it never had previously. Drinks were good, we didn't stop for food. Lots of the tables were 'reserved' & we were moved on twice by the manager. I did mention this & that we were locals but just got a shrug. Great place for drinks in the sun - only downside - there were uncontrolled children running around & far too many hen parties. So it wasn't the most relaxing drink in the sun. But nice, nevertheless.

From organisation to delivery everything was spotless. The team made us feel so welcome and really made our work belated Christmas party a triumph. The evening was very much enjoyed by all! The food was very nice and fresh and service very professional! Thanks again!

I'll be the first to admit that I'm biased. The owners have been acquaintances of mine for many years and I played a small part in the original garden renovation project so I'm well aware of the fastidious attention to detail that has gone in to creating the environment here. That said, even if these biases didn't exist Block would still be my go to place in Brighton. My aforementioned biases are overwhelmingly trumped by the fact that it's the place I met my wife. We left Brighton many years ago but whenever we return for a cheeky weekend away we always find ourselves hanging out in the beer garden here. It's just a lovely place to be with such a chilled vibe about it. There's always interesting craft beers on tap and last time we visited we ate too and it was very tasty and reasonably priced. The staff are always friendly and the venue is spotlessly clean. Block will always have a special place in my life as clichéd as that might sound, but for good reason. I also can't imagine that I'm the only one who feels this way given how great this place is.

Expensive for a northerner (over £5 a pint) but super chill vibe with a mainly outdoor, sheltered drinking experience. Full of new breaks and decent beats on the Friday I went. Also the fries were amazing, try the masala, very nice way of making typical pub fare much tastier. Highly recommended.

Really friendly staff and a great bar. There is a garden to eat and drink in . The team seem genuinely happy and wanting to make your stay memorable . The food was amazing so tasty and big portions The bar is super covid safe you can choose to past and order at the bar or scan a QR code on the tables and do it all on your phone , so super efficient Thank you

The food here is smoked in a charcoal and wood burning oven. As a result, everything's incredible. They focus on taco sharing plates, but we had the burger and daily special lamb tacos to share instead. Both were delicious. The skin on fries were possibly the best fries I've ever had. Eat here, you won't regret it.

One of the most approachable staff I came across when we visited during England Denmark game that was not shown there btw. As we were absolutely not bothered with random adult men playing game for school children that requires mental capability of an ape this was a perfect spot. Staff should be generously rewarded for their hosting skills. It was memorable experience.

I love Block - really nice outdoor space, friendly staff, dog-friendly and they often have great dj sets on. There's also outdoor heating for when it's a little chilly.

Friendly service, lovely food. Ordering by app was a bit of a chore due to slow broadband but everything arrived promptly. Good atmosphere accompanied by some good tunes in the garden makes for a bit of a festival vibe. Recommended.

Fabulous bar in the heart of Kemptown. Lovely little inside bar with a very funky outside area with DJ's playing cool grooves. Nice selection of beers, wines and cocktails. The staff are super friendly and helpful (especially the managers mum!!!). The food is good but the Block Burger, oh the Block Burger is probably the best ive ever had in a restaurant, super juicy, and the crispy (yes properly crispy) smoked bacon and onions created a faultless, flavoursome burger - other burger joints should take note. Can't wait to return.

What a wonderful outdoor space, set on different levels with some fun decor. Tables are apart so meeting the covid guidelines. It's the staff that really make this place. Super helpful and personable. Also have live DJs during the day so you get that much needed outdoor Brighton vibe. Food is a little overpriced for what it is but you cant have everything. Sad they don't seem to be doing the Sunday roasts now. Will worth a visit but you do need to book a table or you might not be able to be seated.

Service was woeful. Food was edible but that was about it, horrifically overpriced. Chef was VAPING over the food in the kitchen. Staff were clueless. No social distancing being enforced. Other customers were hammered/high as kites. Not a fan of being vaped on by a 'manager' when I'm trying to eat inside (and I'm a smoker!). Booked a table online and was given someone's else's table when we arrived. Absolute chaos. So bad that it was entertaining. Thanks!

Wow! The garden area has been transformed into a vibrant and cosy little garden oasis. Just what Brighton needs over the colder months. The staff were extremely friendly, the food was exquisite and the cocktails were something else. If you like a bloody Mary, try their Canadian twist and I can assure you that you won't be disappointed! I'm already looking forward to my next visit

Absolute shambles, turned up as I booked a table for 6 and they had turned around and said their booking system wasn’t working and there was no tables available and we had to leave, disgusting. Had to leave and go somewhere else thank god wouldn’t waste my time and money there. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

Booked a table the other day and despite the kitchen closing 4 hours earlier, only had the reservation cancelled 30 minutes before. When I called was told that they didn’t have access to the booking system but no apology. 2 of our friends turned up and they said in person that we hadn’t made a booking at all! Wouldn’t bother trying again

Booked a table for 7.30pm, got an email at 7pm saying the booking had been cancelled. I called the restaurant to confirm and was advised that the kitchen closed at 3pm as it was quiet. They say they don’t have the facility to let me know but they emailed me 3 hours later. Evening ruined.

Booked via their booking system , turned up and got told their booking system doesn't work properly and they had been fully booked for 3 days, then got accused of being drunk and that we wouldn't be allowed in anyway , and then got told they would say if we left a bad review they would accuse us of being drunk😂

Well ... If I’d just come here for drinks I would have given it 5 stars. Great patio and atmosphere. The positive part of my review ends here. My friends and I made the mistake of ordering dinner. We got the taco platter for two. I have to say that they were the WORST and most HIGHLY priced tacos I’ve ever had! £30 for 6 small tacos and two tiny bowls of condiments. That’s £5 each! The tortillas were dry, crumbled and fell apart the moment you folded them to eat. Additionally, the filling was not great, small in quantity and 2 of the 6 tacos were simply filled with cubes of seasoned sweet potatoes! Given the exorbitant price, we were expecting much better. If the price had been reasonable I would have simply chalked it down as a mediocre meal and said nothing. However, the amount we paid made staying silent too much of a bitter pill to swallow ! To sum it up, we were horrified by what we were served and it was even a topic of conversation the following day! I know that businesses have struggled through lock-down and I want to support them anyway I can. However, we felt ripped off (mainly due to what we got for the price) and would never recommend this place for food. Quite the opposite. Don’t do it! That said, if all you want to do is drink, the back patio and alcohol selection is great! (In response to the owners comment: I did not include the two small sides/condiments when calculating the price since most places include such items with their tacos free of charge. I simply divided £30 by 6, which makes it £5 per taco. At the very most, the platter should not have been more than £20, given the quality and size of the tacos. The ingredients that went into the meal prob cost no more than £3 at the local store. However, like I said in my review, the place is a great place for ambiance and a few drinks.)

We visited block as a group of friends. We got a warm welcome and there was a nice atmosphere. We ordered the tacos. When they came they were like mini fajitas rather than tacos. They were green and tasted of the smell of plasticine. On checking the menu we found they are gluten free and there is no option for non gluten free. The topping was nice but there wasnt a lot of it so we left feeling hungry. For what we paid I expected better. I think this bar should forget about the food and just focus on being a great bar.

The staff are fun and friendly smiling and informative of the area considering I was asking directions for another bar, Prosecco cold and £6:50 for a small bottle which is reasonable for Brighton. The place it’s self I love because the decor is to my taste and the outside area is good for me as I’m a smoker.

I'm a bit puzzled by all the good reviews for this place... It wasn't terrible by any means, and the staff were super friendly, BUT: it's very pricey considering the small portions, and the tacos were not as tasty as any of the other delicious Mexican options in Brighton. I was expecting the meat to be tender and smokey and delicious, but it was average, and not enough yummy Mexican flavour! The tacos didn't have that Masa Harina taste, and the 'hand cut chips' were just normal fries. Not gonna try this place again, will stick to Wahaca and Carlitos!

Went here at the weekend. Received a warm welcome. The food was good although fairly small portioned. Went for the tacos and a side of fries. Paid about £23.00 on a three for two promo had six tacos which tasted great but very pretty small. Drinks were good and standard priced. If you like to smoke there plenty of room in the back in a heated open area. Would go again.

Worth writing a review for! I wouldn't normally bother writing a review but after having a private party in the secret garden at Block (St James Street), we were all so thrilled with the food, the drinks and the service! A massive thank you to the staff! We'll be going back for sure very soon (think there's a NYE party there). Can''t recommend this place more highly!

After a recommendation from a friend we decided to try Block, 101 St James Street. They have a good selection off small plates and street food style bites plus all the more hearty treats one would imagine of such an establishment. The drinks selection is well thought out too, with some yummy tipples not found elsewhere in Brighton. We were very impressed all round and will be definitely recommending it ourselves to whomever will listen! he he, we'll be back there soon xx

Really impressed! This place really is something quite special! This was the second time I had been with my significant other and we weren't disappointed. I had the steak and my partner has a selection of small plates. All prepared and served in good time with a comprehensive selection of suitable beers to boot. Definitely worth a visit! P.S: There's a great covered garden out the back! Many thanks to the great staff there for making our visit so pleasant!

Love this place! Gotta hand it to em', well executed menu with my favourite food; TACO'S ! ! ! plus plenty of beer! Really funky looking too. Great place to be and be seen! Couldn't find fault and will be making my way back there soon.

5 OUT OF 5 STARS! Great quality menu, well stocked bar and brilliant atmosphere. Lovely heated, and marquee covered secret garden with great service. We had tacos and wine, great stuff! A real treat in our new favourite place! :-)

Great pub with an amazing garden

The food at Bloc was fantastic, the small plates were great for sharing and we enjoyed the varied menu. Alas, the same cannot be said for the very poor service. Not only was the food 45 minutes late, but we were not offered a sincere apology and we were asked if we had finished our food before we had even finished eating. However, the most disappointing aspect of our experience at Bloc was the lack of acknowledgement when we entered the restaurant or when we left. This is a basic principle of service and further undermined the quality of food. Bloc clearly has potential and the ambiance and decor are inviting, and as appealing as the food. However, the service needs vast improvement.

OMG stopped by for a casual lunch, saw the Tempura Fish n Chips and well that just said YES.. soo glad we did as it was simply the BEST ever.. world wide... not joking I know especially in the UK... fresh, clean and delicious.. Sat outside as the day was perfect a glass of White and food... heavenly.. I can't recommend enough to be honest.. Highly Highly recommend

I visited here on one of the last warm days this year. The town garden is really lovely and has a feel of sitting and eating somewhere abroad. The walls are all smooth and whitewashed and the trees look rather tropical. There is an undercover area at the top of the garden for those not liking the sun. The seating ranges from low comfortable sofas to high ball stools but this garden is definitely a little sun trap in the open area. It has spotlights all round which would look lovely in the evening. I didn’t know what to expect from the food but we both were very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food we had for lunch, it was delicious. Often these bar style places have mediocre coffee but the coffee was perfect too. Service was great as well. Will definitely be going back. I would say this probably isn’t suitable for young children.

Needed to find something quick, casual and delicious and Block did not disappoint. Great menu, sublime burger, well-stocked bar, charming staff and a layout and atmosphere where solo diners would feel just as comfortable as couples.

Estaba organizando una fiesta sorpresa de cumpleaños para mi otra mitad, y después de ser decepcionado por otro lugar, ¡Block salvó el día!Me dieron descuentos en bebidas ya que pre-ordené juegos de bebidas.Me permitieron decorar el área reservada en la planta baja para que la sorpresa sea más personal.Accidentalmente hicieron estallar todos los globos antes de la fiesta, en lugar de dejarlos, corrieron a la tienda, compraron más y los volvieron a colocar.Hicieron todo lo posible durante toda la noche, para asegurarse de que todo funcionara sin problemas.En general, fue una noche fantástica. Tan memorable, lleno de un servicio fabuloso y un gran bar en general. Volveremos a visitar, ya que ahora guarda recuerdos tan agradables. Así que gracias a Monika, Jez y al resto del personal de Block por ser una parte tan integral del rompecabezas de la fiesta.

Cool and quirky place. Great outdoor back garden, mega art by ( currently ) The Postman, always great music. Very nice staff and great selection of beers and spirits 👍👍 A must see in Brighton, especially if you are into electric music.

Nice Block Lager, and beer garden was OK. The floor was like double sided tape it was that sticky, and the toilets need much improvement. Music was a bit repetitive too at night, but was OK during the day.

We have been to Block on numerous occasions and had a great breakfast here. But in this occasion, my partner and I popped in around 11:20 and, once we were served in the empty bar, were told “no breakfasts today” Try next door”

Went for a friend’s birthday, it was pretty average and service on the relaxed side. With so much on offer locally I feel they need to fine tune things a bit. That said, the feta croquettes were excellent 😃

Although it appears dark and dingy from the outside this modern styled bar has a beautifully decorated back garden which is massive and ideal for private parties, something which they offer. The food is fantastic, and worth coming for alone. I had the “Brighton Blue Beef Burger” a nice chunky burger with Brighton Blue Cheese and the taste was outstanding! The service was good too, having been drinking for a good few hours I asked about their selection of soft drinks which the barman happily explained. He was also very informative when taking mine and my friends order, letting us know of any waiting times and informing my friend of the different beers available. Overall a great experience.

Friendly bar with good range of beers and spirits and great food. The unlimited breakfast is also noteworthy!

Somehow we seem to forget about this bar and when rediscovered it becomes a favourite again ! Staff are really knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. The decor is pretty unique and quirky, and the garden is lovely (kind of an Ibiza lounge thing going on!) and a bit of a hidden gem in a busy street !
