Lovely take-away plaice and chips. Large portion of fish and also of chips. Thoroughly enjoyed. Good value for the money in this day and age

Bought chips after Bloaters had just opened at lunchtime and they were horrible. Not very nice potatoes or flavour and my husband had a fried feather (possibly from a chicken) in his portion. Won't be going there again.

The Best Cod & Chips For Miles. I can't praise this shop enough. I've gotten fed up with previous experiences elsewhere of small portions, tasteless tiny portions of fish and soggy or hard chips. Bloaters are consistently cooked fresh, good value , good sized portions of cod and plenty of chips. You won't get better. They put the fish and chip shops at the coast to shame. Well done bloatets

Waited a good 1/2 hour and Yuk! homemade fishcake, it must of been the worst fishcake I've ever tasted. No seasoning at all, bland and in very thick batter. Chips looked ok on top but fatty as got underneath fat in bottom of box. oh dear

Worst fish n chips we've ever had (so far). To be fair, the battered cod was ok. But the breaded plaice was rock hard on the outside, overcooked on the inside and generally inedible. And the chips - how hard can it be to cook chips? At Bloaters they were a mix of undercooked & hardly cooked at all. As if that wasn't enough, they also had a genuinely unpleasant flavour that made them imposible to eat. Our working theory is that instead of pouring vinegar over the chips, they poured uncooked rapeseed oil over them instead, How else to explain the terrible taste and oiliness? The mushy peas were similarly inedible. And it cost £35 to feed 3 people as a takeaway. Almost all the food (apart from the cod) went in the bin. Seriously - avoid this place until they sort themselves out and learn how to cook fish & chips.

Absolutely awful food. I had breaded plaice .. it was overcooked … the bread crumbs were rock solid and there was little fish inside. The chips were cold and tasteless and the portions were very small. The supreme cheese burger was cold the beef patty was the cheapest make ever. Can’t believe I paid so much for such a rubbish meal which was meant as a treat. Will never go there again . Most of it ended up in the bin.

Very disappointing, our fish batter was swimming in grease, even though boxed and in an outer bag the grease leaked all over the car seat, my shorts and shoes as I carried the bag indoors, the carpet at home, and dripped all over the kitchen table. So I’ve now got a laundry and clean-up job I could’ve done without on holiday. I’ve been using Bloaters for 10yrs or more, it was always so delicately cooked and fresh, has it changed hands I wonder? Although the server said everything is cooked to order and the fish certainly was, most of the chips were tasteless, hard and seemed re-heated. Just well below expectations so I can’t recommend.

The fish was cooked to perfection, certainly no complaints there, asked for and paid for large portion of chips but received I would say a medium. Needs looking at. Would definitely recommend a visit.

Not lived around Sidmouth long, but have bought F&C from Bloaters MANY times, and it has always been excellent.No! there is no fancy bit of paper underneath, but the box is made of absorbent re-cycled board, so does not require any extra trees to be destroyed!And!Surprise! Surprise! they are cooked in a greasy substance!Oil or fat probably!What do others use?! I ask.We tend to find the portions large, but have found that if allowed to cool and FROZEN, the chips can be used later...and are actually even better.[Place the FROZEN chips in an oven at 200C ( 180C Fan oven) for 25 minutes. You can do the same with the fish, but that is better thawed and cooked for a shorter time.]

Ordered fish and chips and it was the most greaseiest fish I have ever had! No paper was put under the fish to absorb any oil so not only did the oil spill through the cardboard you couldn't even taste the fish (probably for the best)! I can honestly say this is the worst fish and chips I have ever had. Expensive too! Cost £15 for just 2 fish and chips!Might as well go to Wetherspoons, it costs less and you get a full drink included!Used to be able to buy a burger for £2.50, now they are nearly £6! Had to take a day off work after this and threw up multiple times throughout the night!

Just been here and ordered 2 meals - one with salt & vinegar and the other without.3 times we clarified this with the person who served us (Tee ?) - after collecting our food we drove into Sidmouth only to find that neither of the meals had salt & vinegar.As I can’t eat chips without salt and vinegar my meal was wasted.I was working that night in Sidmouth and didn’t have time to go back to the shop or get food elsewhere.I’m really angry that the order was wrong after we’d been so specific and I ended up having to go to work with no food - if the owner wants to refund me I still have my receipt !!

called in here at lunchtime as on way to campsite, nice and quiet as just opened, very friendly pleasant lady served us, husbands fish was huge! I had battered sausage and chips, very very nice, took 5 miles up road to site, still hot and tasty, would return for sure

We ended up here on a Saturday evening after walking out of the Blue Ball pub / restaurant up the road due to their terrible, miserable service and inability to serve food within a reasonable timescale.

I have eaten here once before and found it so so a bit over priced but hot and fresh .

I reviewed this fish and chip shop a few years ago. It's changed owners since then but they've maintained the high standard it had before. The fish and chips is always good quality, very fresh, tasty and not greasy and the prices are reasonable compared to other fish and chip shops we have visited. The owner is very friendly and always ready with a smile.

We regularly get a fabulous Friday takeaway from Bloaters. It is always hot fresh. The fish batter is light and crisp and the chips are lovely. The portions are very large so if you have a small appetite make sure your share your supper!

After reading so many mixed reviews about Bloaters I felt compelled to contribute. We were In the area on holiday staying 5 minutes up the road, on our last night we fancied fish and chips. Friday 1st June. We had 2 Cod and chips and one Haddock and chips. The food was all cooked to order and presented in a divided cardboard box. I have to say that this was the best fish and chips we have had in a long time. Still piping hot when we got back, the fish was coated in a light not too thick crispy batter, not soggy! They only do one size of fish which was very big, thick and meaty.The staff were pleasant. If this is the usual standard of fayre then they deserve to do well! Excellent.

We live quite close to this fish and chip shop although over the years have had mixed experiences and therefore not really rated it very highly . However our last few visits under the current owners have been much better - the homemade fish cakes are very good, and the cod bites are lovely big pieces of fish, very reasonably priced. Everything tastes fresh, batter is light and crispy. Lady owner very friendly. All round a good chippy.

Always use Bloaters for a fish n chip takeaway, always good and large portions. Offer a good varied menu with children’s meals available. Reasonably priced and parking available nearby so very handy.

If we want fish and chips, we never go anywhere else. The fish is always lovely, and the chips consistently excellent. You often have to wait, but that's because it's justifiably popular.

This used to be a really good chippy, but just lately if you get there at 5pm you will be served chips refried from lunch time, not very appealing to eat, and watch your teeth on the crunchy bits as there is more of that than actual chips.

Called in one evening earlier this week, whilst on our holiday. We had seen the queues here all the time so thought it must be good. We bought some fish and chip plus chicken and chips, the final bill coming in at over £25. a tad expensive for a take a way tea. When we got them home we were very disappointed with the food, most of the chips were all dry and hard, and the chicken breast my husband had ordered was extremely small and very over cooked.

We are regular customers, and have never been disappointed. Can't say better than that! The fish is consistently good and well-cooked, and can be lightly battered if required. The chips are always tasty. We enjoy the haddock, and also the breaded plaice. We never go anywhere else.

Popped in here for fish and chips a week ago and wish we hadn't bothered. Batter on the haddock was pretty much non-existent and the fish was very greasy - there was a pool of oil in the tray underneath.

Popped in after a walk along the Byes, and really glad we did. I had a small cod and chips and my husband had the standard portion. It was put in polystyrene containers and was still hot when we got home. Beautiful fish, very white, still crisp batter and lovely chips which we both enjoyed. Very impressed. Also impressed by the staff cleaning up (it was 8pm when we got there) washing down walls, surfaces etc. Will definitely be back.

Holidaying in sidmouth rainy evening so decided to try the local fish and chip shop Bloaters. We were not disappointed it was excellent. Usually I find cod thin with skin on and to thicker batter but the cod here was thick flaky chunks of fish with a lovely crisp light batter good chips not at all oily very well cooked. We shall.definately return and recommend we had cod large chips and 2 jumbo saveloys and it only cosy £10.60 good value.

Having being a regular visitor to Sidmouth/Sidford for the past seven years and driven past this place innumerable times, last week was my first visit.It's a fish&chip shop, next to Spar, near the lights. Menu is pretty usual, fish, chips, pies, burgers, prices are 'normal'.The 'buts'. The place is immaculately clean and well maintained, no down-at-heel chippy this.The portions are HUGE, easily enough for two people or satisfying if you've worked up an appetite. Everything we had was good quality and well cooked. Breaded plaice was a large whole fillet, fish cakes are massive, mountain of proper chips and peas were mushy.Recommended, we'll be back, but remember to order one fish cake per person next time!

Whilst the staff are friendly they do not rush to fulfill the orders from the very busy shop. For what is meant to be a relatively fast food type of cuisine, although most of the fish is cooked to order, I do not believe a customer should have to wait nearly 40 minutes from placing an order to leaving the shop. Having said this the food is nice but not sure it is worth the wait.

After a 5 hour drive to Sidmouth for the weekend we Went in at 20:15 and they were already closing down for the evening even though it should close at 21:00.. (it was a Friday night) the only food they had was battered sausages and 1 fish cake.. the sausages were burnt on the out side, hardly any batter, pink in the middle and although I nibbled the end of one they were awful..the chips were frozen chips and tasted of powder and the fish cake was fish in name only.. this used to be a great takeaway but in future I will starve...

Popped in on a Friday night after a 4 hour drive.Not much of a wait, friendly staff, fresh food but the small cod was.....small and the large chips was also small :-(

It is hard to believe that in a traditional seaside town like Sidmouth that the only fish and chip shop open after 4pm on a Wednesday evening is in Sidford, a few miles drive out of town. Sadly Bloaters seems to realise it has a monopoly and doesn't really care about the quality of its food. Our fish (haddock) was thinly coated in batter that was soggy and quite unpleasant. The chips were only just cooked and were a little hard. We visit Sidmouth four or five times per year but we won't be returning to Bloaters.

Visited on our last night to save cooking really good fish and chips we had Rock eel , Cod , Sausages, Mushy Peas , Curry Sauce and Chips, All lovely we only needed two large chips between 6 adults ( 2 o.a.p in that number) and one small child. Telephoned order but still had a wait really busy and this was on a Thursday at 5.30 !

I gave up Fish & Chips a few years ago as the fat in the batter always gave me a bad stomach and chips were often soggy etc. My son wanted to try Bloaters (it has a ChipHead Man outside!) so I relented. The Service was good, very polite, the whole plaice (see what I did there?) was spotlessly clean and I can honestly say it was best fish and batter I can recall. It was beautifully soft, fresh and flavoursome (I had Cod), the batter was light and crisp. It had obviously been cooked in clean oil as there was no taste and I had no negative reaction, bloaty feeling etc. The chips, while not fresh potatoes, were crispy and very tasty. I was very impressed, my son loved them, and will definitely be visiting more often in future.
