Had an absolutely lovely dinner at Blackfriars. Top notch service that truly went above and beyond and delicious food. The building is absolutely gorgeous also: so cozy.

Came here for a meal as part of an 18 man stag do. The dining hall was brilliantly laid out and the decor was right up our street. The service for us all was great and we couldn’t fault it, we were very well looked after. The absolute highlight was the food…wow! From starters to desserts there wasn’t a shred of food left on our plates. Highly recommend 👍🏻

You have to reserve as it is impossible to get a table. The place is simply charming. I can't talk about the food because it was impossible to get in.

Consistently good food and service makes this one of our go to restaurants in Newcastle. The building is beautiful and makes for a great atmosphere. Keep an eye on the website for special events including wine and beer tasting dinners. Highly recommended.

I have been to several tasting courses as Blackfriars and they have all been excellent. Knowledgable hosts, quality items to taste and a journey through the origin of those items. I have done wine, whisky & tequila. Can’t recommend them enough, and they are reasonably priced. I haven’t eaten there in a few years, but when I did, it was one of the best slices of pork belly I have ever had.

Party of 4 celebrating a 50th birthday, warm welcome, impeccable and friendly service, timing between courses was perfect and the food was fabulous. So glad we finally visited ! This is easily in my top 3 restaurants! Service was impeccable, the staff are fantastic. Our server (Maria ... not 100% on name) was so knowledgeable and friendly. She picked out the perfect wine matches! The food was phenomenal, such good flavours and presentation. Good portions and very fresh. We had the set lunch menu and everything was delicious. We will certainly be back

Beautiful food in a beautiful location and setting

Thank you Blackfriars for a fabulous Sunday lunch and a lovely relaxing afternoon. The food was superb, mains (nut roast & lamb) and desserts (plum cheesecake & sticky toffee pudding) the wine delicious (Riesling & Nero D’Avola). Above all the staff were warm, welcoming, professional and helpful. The ambience in the restaurant was so good we will definitely return.

Lovely restaurant and service was great....however, ordered a steak which was extremely fatty, hardly any meat tbh. We did mention it, and they said that they would talk to chef, but that was it... when tpu are paying top price tou do expect a better steak than was served.

Came here for Sunday lunch, expecting great things. They had run out of lamb and offered a venison pie instead which my husband chose. It was minced venison, not what I would expect in a pie but he did say it was tasty. Served with Yorkshire pudding though?? The roast beef was very poor, cut very thinly and full of fat and gristle. Too many tiny amounts of several veg on the plate for my liking but at least it was fresh. The worst bit was the gravy which tasted to me like there was some sort of commercial product added to it which I most certainly don’t expect in a restaurant of this calibre. The whole meal was also lukewarm. Deserts were all good but very small portions, a tiny scoop of ice cream with the sticky toffee pudding. I have had much better and cheaper Sunday lunches elsewhere and will not return here, it was very disappointing.

Had a lovely afternoon tea good value and lots of sandwiches/cakes/ scones

We joined the street food express cookery class today, the chef, Josh, was such fun. We made tortillas and then a gorgeous mexican chicken filling, then devoured 3 tacos each. We've come home with left overs, recipes and tonnes of great tips. I definitely recommend trying out the cooking or tasting sessions,. We will most certainly be back. Thanks Blackfriars 😀

We had an AMAZING night with our firm in this restaurant! The round table upstairs is one of the most unique settings I have ever in my life had dinner in. Our waiter Louie did an amazing job serving us and was also able to tell about the history of the building. Highly recommended!

Couldn’t fault anything with our experience! All good, the place was fully booked for Mother’s Day, the food was great, service was good and we weren’t rushed and no waiting around for anything - great afternoon

Great ambience and wonderful service the Sunday lunch was ok. Main course quite good but The apple pie for dessert was tart and small! Not as good value fir money as some of the other restaurants in the City

Very disappointed, despite booking months ago we were given an overspill table in a very cold and lack lustre room . Food had to be carried from the kitchen outside through the garden resulting in temped food . beef was tough , took home to feed the dog Poor poor will not go again

Took my mam/daughter here for Mother’s Day and can honestly not fault the place! Very high standards great service and food to die for! Would highly recommend and will 100% be back very soon to try the main menu.

We attended Blackfriars for the Beer & Bao cookery course. Josh & Anthony who ran the class were brilliant (and a lot of fun) and gave us lots of tips and tricks and were happy to answer any questions. The food was delicious, as was the beer, and it's safe to say we did not go away hungry! We even took home a doggy bag of leftovers. We will definitely be putting the recipes to use and making these ourselves at home!

Excellent as we have come to expect from Blackfriars wouldn’t go anywhere else

The service was excellent. The starters were delicious and well presented. The main course was delicious but was not as hot as it should have been. The temperature in the restaurant was very cool and the draught when the doors opened didn’t help the temperature of the food. All in all it was a good experience just a little disappointed with the main course. We would return as it’s a lovely place to visit.

We have wanted to go here for years and with us having friends staying in our fantastic city we decided to go here for the experience. It is indeed a fantastic, ancient and beautiful restaurant. It is steeped in history as you will find out if you visit and take a bit of interest. The staff first.....very correct for the standard of restaurant it has aspired to and indeed is. They are professional, polite and courteous. Unlike other great pretenders in the city which just has waiting on staff going to do their job, not interacting as they should. A great asset here. The food was very good on the whole, starters very nicely thought out and tasty. Fish cakes and duck was our preference. All good. Mains were fish dishes of 2 x herb crusted cod which was delicious..... a grilled north shields sole which was small in its delivery with a big bone through the middle, not really good value....and a venison mince pie which was lovely. It has to be said the wine list is expansive. Our choice of a French Merlot was the best tasting wine I have had for years....£33/bottle, but it was superb. Other drinks we had were almost bespoke beers, quite nice served in less than pint amounts. Very good though. A very nice place to sit and pass the time away with friends or as a couple. We are pleased we have ventured in there now. We will be back.

My partner and I visited with some friends, atmosphere and seating was superb, cosy and tasteful. The wine options were great and offered a wide range to suit any occasion. The food was good with excellent presentation and was a great example of fine dining in Newcastle. They have a short and diverse menu that provides good options to all. I would recommend and will be going again.

We had a lovely time. We always come here for special occasions and it never disappoints. The food and service was absolutely amazing as always. It was a little louder than usual but still a lovely night.

A really excellent meal with friends. The table was perfect, the service excellent and the food delicious. It was particularly good that we didn't feel rushed. We'll definitely be booking again.

Been here many times before, but on this occasion the food didn't hit the mark at all. There was nothing special about any dish. The triple cooked chips were burnt to cinders and were removed from the bill. Both main meals were tasteless and bland and just poorly cooked. Desserts were ok and the best thing about the meal. On making the booking a drop down menu asks if it's a special occasion, I selected birthday but that was totally ignored when we visited. It's the first time I have left the restaurant feeling deflated and that the quality was poor to the point I would not return. Just as a side note, they are also charging £30 for a £6.75 bottle of Rose and that's retail price not what the restaurant will be buying it for. Theres putting a mark-up on alcohol and then there's taking the Michael. I know the menu was the afternoon fixed price menu but the quality of the food should still be high.

Love the warm historic surroundings of both the bar & restaurant (even the landing of the loos! ) The service was exceptional, all of the waitresses have been taught to the highest standard. Senior staff clarified my allergies and provided a safe menu. The food was delicious, its not cheap, but you can't deliver that quality of food without paying a decent amount-rightly so. Look forward to our next visit. Huge thank you

The food was on the whole delicious. The pork wasn’t amazing and has some bitter flavours but everything else stunning. Service was great and the waiter friendly.

We were ignored for 20 mins. Fair play though manager admitted mistake and sorted us right out. World class food and drink. Definitely recommend xx

Booked this afternoon tea as part of my mams Christmas present. Was really lovely and staff welcoming. We were looked after, staff being attentive but not over the top. Nice selection of sandwiches, sausage roll, scones and cakes. Tea and coffee refills. We added the fizz which was lovely.

A great night, such a good laugh and host Dan knew his stuff and was good fun.

The 'cocktail and canapes' evening was excellent. Very friendly and welcoming- the barman running it was relaxed and helpful and went through making 3 delicious cocktails- which we enjoyed drinking! We left feeling we could definitely recreate them at home. The canapés were substantial and delicious.

Absolutely superb, lovely food, service and atmosphere

First visit to Blackfriers but it wont be our last. Firstly the service from all of the staff was fantastic, very helpful, friendly and there when you needed them. Secondly the food was top draw, we went for the set menu option on this occassion. The only sligh5 downside was the 8n house pale ale was not very good but the in house larger was nice. We also had a lovely bottle of Pinot to compliment our fish and chicken mains. Restaurant and ambiance were just right.

Excellent restaurant, would recommend to anyone, would have got 5 stars but wasn’t a busy night so atmosphere not as good as could be!

We had a very enjoyable experience on history tour and set menu. We were met by a very enthusiastic guide in the parlour bar and offered tea/coffee or water. He gave us a brief history of the building before we headed outside. We were shown the court yard and exterior and given more in-depth information before heading back indoors. We were shown the micro brewery, banqueting hall, tasting room and cookery school, all with more history. We then headed down to the restaurant where we had a fantastic lunch with a glass of wine. The whole thing was really good value for money. I would certainly recommend it.

Very nice room and good staff but was expecting so much more from the food which was underwhelming. .So felt expensive for what we had, a fairly basic Sunday dinner. Fatty pork belly, really disappointing single roast potato, unimaginative vegetables, poor gravy. Plate saved by really good Yorkshire pudding. Sticky toffee was delicious though.

We went to Blackfriars for Sunday lunch. We had heard very good things about the place so we had high expectations. Unfortunately it was a bit of a disappointment for us. The starters were good and the desserts were alright but the Sunday lunch was mixed. The vegetables were delicious, especially the red cabbage. However, the Yorkshire puddings, while huge in size, were burnt on the outside so not very pleasant to eat. I had the lamb which somehow was dry and my partner had the beef. The beef was full of fatty, nervy bits and was very difficult to cut through so my partner didn’t get much meat to eat. The price of the 3 course menu was ok but we got charged £3.50 for a bottle of tap water which we thought was a bit shocking. We were quite underwhelmed by the experience and I don’t think we will go back unfortunately.

Arrived at 5.30 both ordered cod told none left had chicken instead. When bill came we were charged for both cod and chicken. Complained and was then told the cod had actually been available .Very disappointed

Blackfriars dining experience was exceptional as usual. The choice on the set menu was fantastic and the food delightful. Staff very friendly and professional as always. Love this restaurant and the setting. Must try the Hog Roast soon!

We had the set menu at lunch time for our anniversary. The food was excellent and at a good price. The service was very attentive and the setting made the experience really special. I would definitely recommend.

We took the Middle East cookery class and thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the food was lovely. We will look at other classes in the future. We would absolutely recommend booking a class.

First visit to Blackfriars. Brilliant food. Fabulous atmospheric location steeped in history. Six of us in the party and we all enjoyed the food. Will definitely return.

Fantastic experience in every aspect of our visit (business lunch)

Disappointed that even booking well in advance end up getting a table next to the reception and within draft arrangements of the door. Appreciate it was a heavily book night but there were plenty of other tables available while we were there and still free when we left. I should have said something but did not want to spoil the experience. Saying that if you want to eat quickly they cannot wait to serve you and get you out of the door. The food was very nice but I think I probably marked the whole experience to high I don’t think I will be going back and have been here several times in the past

Lovely evening for Valentine’s Day. Service was outstanding and very attentive without being too much. Didn’t like our assigned table but when we asked to live this was accommodated. Food was lovely and we had a fabulous night. Will be returning soon.

This really is a lovely restaurant. The service is excellent,and the food of a high quality. My only complaint is the size of the portions for the main meal. The venison pie was really nice,but the portion was very small,and I am not a big eater.

10th February 2024 went with a family member for her 70th Birthday. We didn't book a table .But we thought we would go and see if it was possible to get a table.We were offered a table for 230pm as there were no tables available at 1pm.we were really pleased that they could fit us in at this time.We past the time away until it was our time to get our table. The manager she was lovely and all the staff were so helpful and couldn't do enough for us.Food was fantastic, we loved the full experience of Blackfriers.They even had a birthday card on our table for my family member's Birthday that was such a lovely touch We would definitely recommend coming for a meal here to anyone that wants something special in a beautiful historical place with fantastic staff that couldn't do enough to make your visit an experience to remember. I would recommend it might be best if you book first as it is a very popular place to eat.Thank you to the management and staff for our afternoon it wonderful 😀

Delicious Sunday roast. Great value for 3 courses. Got the wine pairing as well which was worth it.

Went for afternoon tea which was all very bland. I had the coronation chicken sandwich, the ham and mustard butter sandwich and the pork and truffle saussage roll, and none of it had any flavour. The cakes were just okay. The service and staff were very good, and I'd definitely go back for a meal, but wouldn't reccomend the afternoon tea

Sunday dinner lovely if you order lamb or pork however the grilled sole option was small, did not expect large portion but it was tiny and had approx 2 baby potatoes on some cabbage so not as if veg was generous either. Sticky toffee pudding was lovely but portion was again tiny and was a 1/3 of the size from last visit. Service was really slow.

Not the standard I expected, had to wait ages to pay the bill while the younger girl at front of house chatted to her pal for 10 mins, similar story with the food huge bone in fish cake base starter. Maybe a bad day But I’ll not be returning

Always a fantastic experience the building is fantastic! The parlour was new for us to try and it was a lovely venue. The food was amazing. The service is 5 star. The best in Newcastle.
