Great place to have a special meal.

We attended a whisky tasting as part of a stag party, and to be honest, most of us weren’t that excited going in—we’re not big whisky drinkers. But the experience completely exceeded our expectations, thanks to Dan, who led the session. Dan understood that we weren’t experts and didn’t take ourselves too seriously, so he tailored the experience perfectly for our group. He was engaging, knowledgeable, and made the whole event feel relaxed and fun rather than intimidating. His ability to read the room and adjust to our vibe really made the difference. Highly recommend this for any group looking for something unique and well-executed—it’s a great mix of fun, learning, and fantastic hospitality. Thanks again, Dan he’s the man.

We came to Blackfriars for a special family dinner and had a lovely meal. Attentive service and delicious food (incl. interesting vegan options) all in lovely surroundings … our booth table was perfect for the occasion. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this tucked away gem of a restaurant.

A relaxing atmosphere with a good variety of dishes on the menu. Many using locally sourced ingredients. The food is first class, well prepared and presented. Very good value for money.

WOW, the food was so good, we originally started out planning to have two courses but couldn’t resist a third. Their homemade gluten free bread was the best bread I’ve had since being diagnosed coeliac. The staff took my allergies extremely seriously and made us feel very welcome. I couldn’t recommend this place highly enough, it was mind blowing.

Nice Restaurant but Exspensive..I dont like Service Charges added on to the bill because if i want to tip i will tip...I thought 9 pound extra was pricey...You dont get much food the portion sizes are a bit small..

The Blackfriars restaurant in Newcastle is a truly fascinating place, located inside a well-preserved ancient monastery. The environment is refined, welcoming and warm. The staff was always friendly, polite and attentive. At our table there were two small children (aged 3 and 5) and a person with celiac disease, and the service was impeccable with everyone. The children's menu is quite varied and allowed our children to easily choose what they liked. Regarding celiac disease, all dishes can be customized to remove any contaminating ingredients. Furthermore, they brought us separate bread, butter and condiments, specially prepared for the celiac person. Each gluten-free dish is marked with a flag and served individually, avoiding any risk of cross-contamination. The food is very good and tasty, with adequate portions. The menu is varied and offers both traditional English dishes and recipes with international influences. The prices are not low, but fully justified by the quality of the food and the excellent service. We went there for lunch and the experience was really pleasant.

Came here for afternoon tea and waited for over 20 minutes past the booking time to get seated. When we were inside the restaurant service was very slow and to our disappointment there were several problems with the food. The scones were undercooked, pastries were dry and tasted odd and many of the sandwiches were bland. Our waitress was overall quite receptive to feedback and passed it on to the team, but unfortunately given the experience it's hard to justify charging £25 per person for this.

We love this place! We try to eat here once every menu (it changes quarterly I believe) and the food quality is always amazing. Their set menu is so well priced and they do the BEST french martini! GREAT for gluten free too and insanely good gluten free bread. Love the atmosphere too, and the staff are great

Suggestive location. Fair price-quality ratio, although the portions are not very generous. In any case, recommended restaurant to try good traditional British cuisine.

The atmosphere is amazing and I was positively surprised with the “catch of the day “. I’m definitely going back. A point for improvement is the time taken by the service to check on the tables, we had to wait a bit to ask for the drinks.

First time trying this restaurant……boy I was not disappointed. Best Sunday lunch in the north east. Firstly the setting is lovely, fantastic outside seating area and stacks of character inside. Staff were lovely. Now the food ….. amazing. Pork belly lunch with a black pudding starter. Delicious and I would recommend to anyone. A lovely experience and I will be back again !

First time visiting here on Sunday for the Sunday menu and absolutely loved it. It is pricey but I'd pay it again, I'm not one to enjoy Sunday dinners outside at restaurants but I thought this was fabulous. We were a table of 6 and all ordered something different, I thoroughly enjoyed the but roast and the others all really enjoyed their meat (except for the person who ordered the lamb, she didn't enjoy it much). Lovely venue and spent a bit of time out back in the square while waiting for our table which was also lovely. I'd be happy to go again but would need to comfortably have a bit of spare cash and would enjoy more just me and my partner. Service wasn't the best, we were seated right at the entrance so shown the table but I think the waitress got distracted as we had to get our own menus from the counter and when the food came, all bar one showed up so my partner walked up to the kitchen and it came a couple of minutes later with an apology. It hasn't put us off, I'm looking forward to the next time I can go.

Fantastic meal at Blackfriars, we often for the set menu and accompanying wine flight. Will definitely be coming back soon.

Atmosphere, ambience and overall aesthetics were excellent. Good was superb and the waitresses were attentive and helpful. All in all a great experience which I highly recommend for anyone seeking that little bit more.

Just done the brewery tour and lunch. Ben the brewer was very knowledgeable and interesting to chat to. He obviously loves his job. 😊 Lunch in the restaurant was fantastic. Food was excellent quality and so tasty. Staff were friendly, professional and an asset to the business. Will definitely return. Thank you to everyone we met today.

One night stop over for work and was recommended for a evening meal. Quality of food was excellent and the service was also 5 star. Had the sirloin steak with the best peppercorn sauce I have ever had and followed that up with a lemon cheesecake. Also tried the IPA which was very smooth and a nice brew.

Fantastic experience.We enjoyed a cookery course for Artisian Bread making .Great location, great staff fantastic group of people. And i baked my very first bread and i am 60 🙂🙃 thankyou..

Visitamos Blackfriars durante el fin de semana del Día de la Madre en marzo y teníamos grandes expectativas, dadas sus excelentes credenciales para comer, pero desafortunadamente, la experiencia se quedó corta en varios frentes. El servicio fue notablemente lento y careció de la atención que cabría esperar de un lugar que se posicionara en el extremo superior del mercado. La comida comenzó con una nota positiva con el entrante de vieira, que estaba muy bien presentado y lleno de sabor. En cambio, el entrante de langoustina era abrumador: seco, carente de condimento, y decepcionado por una pasta demasiado espesa para un plato que aspiraba a la alta elegancia gastronómica. Para la alimentación, tanto el Hogget como el Ballotine de pato fueron atractivamente chapados, pero la calidad no coincidía con la presentación. El hogget era decepcionantemente soso, y tuvimos que enviar el pato de vuelta, ya que se servía demasiado rosa para nuestro gusto. Cuando el plato regresó de la cocina, el resto de la mesa había terminado su alimentación, lo que hizo que la experiencia gastronómica fuera incómoda y desequilibrada. El postre – un pudín de toffee pegajoso – estaba bien, pero nada memorable. Carecía del tipo de florecimiento u originalidad que podría haber redimido la noche. En general, nos fuimos sintiéndonos decepcionados. La comida era cara, y la calidad de la comida y el servicio simplemente no justificaba el precio. Para un restaurante que se comercializa a sí mismo como una buena experiencia gastronómica, se perdió la marca en varias áreas clave.

Our first meal in the city. The atmosphere was chic and relaxed yet set in a unique, picturesque, and historic location. The food was good, and the staff was friendly.

I ordered salmon and i was mesmerized with the taste. The food was melting in my mouth and burst of flavour. The home brewed drinks were very good

Brilliant Menu of Starter, Mains and Desserts. Good selection of wines and beers and a very comfortable and pleasant atmosphere.

I did the Sushi cookery class yesterday. A Christmas Present from my wife. It was wonderful, Emma was a great host. Everything was really well organised, spotlessly clean and we learnt plenty of insider tips which demystified sushi. I thoroughly enjoyed the course and recommend this cookery school to anyone looking for a different gift for the foodie in your life. Thank you Emma for doing a great job.

I have used this restaurant a number of times now and have always found the food and service to be very good and reasonably priced.

If you are in Newcastle on a Sunday, BOOK AHEAD. This is the BEST Sunday roast in the North East. The food, service and ambiance are second to none.

Had Sunday lunch which was fantastic, planned on two courses but ended up having three courses as the food was so delicious!

Visited Newcastle a number of times but how have we missed Blackfriars’s?!? Fantastic unpretentious restaurant with great food, attentive staff and wonderful ambience - if you come to Newcastle you must try to visit

Blackfriars Winter Menu 2025 was delicious. Allergy matrix easy to read and identify swaps as necessary, order taken by a manager. Wine pairings with starters/mains accompanied by knowledgeable descriptions and interesting information about the choices and complemented the foods perfectly. Wide variety of food choices to suit most. Pre-ordered drinks took a little while to arrive but service was otherwise prompt and intrusive. Lovely atmosphere and a really relaxed feel for lunch, will definitely be back.

Great venue, excellent staff, tables spaced out nicely. Expensive but you get what you pay for.

Fantastic time with Emma leading our cookery class in the cookery school. Very informative (and delicious) with things to take away at the end. you get a drink on arrival and drink with your food after you have finished cooking also which made the whole experience even better. I would highly recommend this experience and looking forward to our next opportunity to drop in.

The Winter Menu 2025 was really delicious. Allergy orders are taken by a manager, the allergen matrix is super clear to read to easily identify swaps. We had pre-ordered drinks for our arrival which took a short while to arrive, however the wine pairings for our starters/mains were prompt and accompanied by a knowledgeable explanation of origin. A nice chilled out vibe for lunch and fantastically great food. Hope to visit again to sample dinner some day!

Although we arrived very early, we were immediately shown to our table. The lunchtime set menu of two or three courses had a good selection of dishes in each course to suit most palates, including vegetarian, vegan and gluten free, well presented and flavoursome. The wine pairings for each dish are available. We opted for these. The wines were explained to us as they were brought and all were excellent. The service was very good - attentive but not intrusive - and the dishes were served in a timely manner. All in all a lovely lunch.

We received a voucher for Blackfriars for Christmas. Booking was easy online. We arrived slightly early but our table was ready. The restaurant was not busy when we arrived and enjoyed the background music. Service was very good and we asked if we could mix and match between the menu’s and they said it was fine to do that. We ordered the fish platter to share which was really nice. I ordered the fillet steak, it was perfectly cooked to the way I like it and the chips were amazing, I ordered the beef dripping jus which was delicious. My husband ordered the corn fed chicken, again this was delicious. We had no room for desert so can’t comment on that. My husband also had the larger brewed onsite which he said was very nice. Only fault I would say is they put a service charge of 10% on your bill but it is explained it is not mandatory. Definitely will be back.

The service and staff are perfect. The place is even more amazing. The restaurant is placed in a heritage building and well preserved. It is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Newcastle. The foods were amazing. It was well prepared with a great taste. The restaurant itself is clean and calming.

Good food and service, a bit cold on a winter’s day!

The food was great, however the unnecessary rushing of ordering, starter and in to main meant we’d been there for 45 mins and had both courses. The restaurant was not full and the food was obviously near ready to serve. It wasn’t what we had hoped for or expected for a relaxing meal out. We had to ask the staff multiple times to slow things down, which wasn’t ideal. Would be great if this could be worked on as everything else about the meal was great.

I took part in a cooking class put on by Blackfriars over 3.5 hours. Six of us, led by staff member Cathy, learned how to prepare and cook a Malaysian meal, and the experience was wonderful. I will definitely take another cooking class at Blackfriars.

Stunning location offering delicious food, relaxed atmosphere and stellar customer service. My husband and I chose from the set (winter) menu which is available until 29/03/2025. Starters were leek & potato soup (vegan), mains were maple-roasted nut roast (vegan) and handmade pork sausage, followed by coffee & almond tiramisu (vegan) and sticky toffee pudding. Service was quick and friendly, staff were incredibly attentive without being overbearing and matched each table’s energy. They spoke highly and passionately of their own food which are all green flags in our book! Will definitely return, very much recommended. Total cost for meal, drinks (Diet Coke & bottle of Chardonnay) and coffees = £101 plus optional tip

Mains excellent, desserts not so much, did not have starters.

My wife and son attended the Vietnamese cookery class last Tuesday having been on 2 previous similar courses. They thought the experience was superb and the quality of the ingredients was outstanding. No doubt I will be finding them more Xmas presents for them to enjoy at Blackfriars in the future which is still our favourite restaurant in Newcastle.

Beautiful meal as always. Hearty traditional food with an element of fine dining. Always love it here. Service was excellent and as it was my husbands birthday they brought him his desert with a candle and sang happy birthday to him!

The building is a historical one, beautifully restored and this creates a very cosy atmosphere inside. Service was excellent. They offer a wide choice of food and everything we tried was very good.

Went during restaraunt week The first course was lovely. It was the fish sharing platter. The beef course was well below average. The beef was dry. It was cooked as requested.pink. However, just poor. The waiter did offer an alternative. I declined as I didn't want to wait for another meal to be prepared. The food looked like it had been thrown on the plate.The Bearnaise sauce was more on the chips that the beef. Making the chips soggy. I could have done better myself. At £22.00 each, it was very disappointing. The staff were lovely. The venue was very pleasant. However, had to go out through the courtyard for the toilet. The temp outside was -2. With no heating in the loos. Yeah.shame about the experience.

Every single person who we spoke to were amazing. Especially our waiter who was so polite, friendly and attentive. Our food was quick and absolutely delicious. Thank you for helping me have a lovely birthday. We will definitely be back!!

Limited choice due to restaurant week.(which I was not aware of when I booked) The vegetables were sent back as they were cold - but never returned. They did take them off the bill but it effects the meal. Starter was delicious but main course (chicken) very average. Wine (Sancerre) very nice

The historic ambience this restaurant offers in the heart of the city is worth a visit alone , please take some time to soak it in and perhaps look at its history online . And then the food ! What a wonderful experience the staff are impeccable , the food is passionately prepared and if of the highest quality and the surroundings simply are sumptuous and steeped in history. The chefs and staff are clearly so passionate about providing the visitor with an exceptional experience and boy did the reach their goal.

Visited for Lunch as part of Newcastle's Restaurant Week - a popular promotion as the restaurant was very busy but not too noisy. The starter of corned beef hash was full of flavour helped by the horseradish sauce. This was followed by the succulent chicken breast on a lovely bed of honey and mustard mashed potato. Great service with great food
