Blackfriars Restaurant in Newcastle upon Tyne

Small group of 4, work's Xmas meal out. Service was absolutely outstanding. The atmosphere was great, and it's a lovely historic building. Food was excellent. 2 of us were driving and their non-alcoholic options were great. And we weren't rushed out the door either. Yes it's more expensive, but I'd say it's definitely worth it, especially when you consider how overpriced mediocre food/drink can be at this time of year. Thoroughly enjoyed it and can't recommend it highly enough.

We, being a party of 4, returned once again for the lovely Festive delights this restaurant offers every Christmas. Again, it didn't disappoint, the food is of a very high standard, well presented delivered in a timely manner and even the plates, for the main meal, were lovely and hot. This year there was two choices for a drink before the meal and tea or coffee after the meal, superb..........a lovely atmosphere bringing back a bit of that Christmas Cheer, which has been missing for a while. Well done all.

Ambience was beautiful staff caring and attentive food was sublime always seasoned to perfection and I really enjoyed the glass of complimentary fizz thoroughly enjoyed my festive meal

I hate it when restaurants put a discretionary service charge on. I pay it but would tip anyway if the food and service are value for money.And a further point is the Employer should be paying decent salaries without staff having to rely on tips for their living.

Lovely restaurant, great staff and very welcoming ambience Our table was near to the bar so got quite loud We had the festive menu and unfortunately I was disappointed with my Monkfish It came with gravy and mash potatoes I know it’s personal taste but the monkfish was about three mouthfuls it’s was tough and gravy and mash did not compliment it I think I would probably try the restaurant again , but not over Christmas

Food was ok at best, lukewarm, coffee served before the dessert. Service was rushed with the head waiter rushing round like they were high as a kite in drugs. Poor showing from one of the top restaurants in the town.

Very expensive for VERY sub standard food. £46 per head with £5 extra for veg which we ordered ( 7 sprouts, 6 roast pots & still waiting for the root veg which had run out but still charged for ) . Pork so tough couldn't cut it , black pudding so over done couldn't cut that either.Scallops £6 extra & size of 5 pence piece , 30 mins between courses & had the cheek to say we needed to vacate the table before waiter had even taken order for puddings which were included in price. If you charge these prices & give a 2 hour slot per table GET YOUR SERVICE up to scratch. Very disappointing & not worth the money at over £51 per head.

Nice restaurant with ambience. Although not for the fussy eater but for someone who enjoys a spin on meals.

I would read our experience on Saturday as distinctly mediocre. For a credible restaurant to not be able to serve vegetables with a Christmas menu on a Saturday afternoon is just not acceptable. The service was quite slow and I am not sure I would rush back. We should’ve complained at the time but when you are with friends, it can be embarrassing and we shouldn’t have been in a position where we were left disappointed. 

The cookery school experience exceeded my expectations. Very well organised. Excellent teaching, including bringing the whole group together in a lively inclusive way. Delicious food, well looked after by all the team. Huge thanks to Emma leading the session, sharing her knowledge and expertise in a calm down to earth approach.

Christmas get together with friends, love this place. Lovely setting, great atmosphere, food and drinks excellent, staff as ever very friendly and professional, cannot think of anything to fault. Will keep coming back, would not hesitate to recommend.

The food was amazing and our waiter was great although he seemed very busy. The ambience was lovely. My only small complaint was that our table wasn't ready for when we booked it for so we had to wait a few mins in the snug bar downstairs.

Lovely evening at the Blackfriars. Cosy and very festive setting, service was great and as we had a deaf person in our party it was great to have a member of staff who knew British Sign Language.

Food disappointing our table had a big wobble which couldnt be fixed so uncomfortable to eat table wasnt ready when we arrived we we= first sitting so no excuse I've been b4 very disappointing when u pay this amount of money food didnt reflect that 8 of us and we all felt the same no proper disabled loo only staff loo that wasnt the best

A lovely warm welcome and a birthday card from the staff sitting on our table. The Christmas menu was varied and interesting but the standout plate for me had to be the herb crusted trout.Absolutely delicious and so beautifully orchestrated in terms of flavours, textures and presentation. On the down side the ice cream( cinnamon?) on my apple and almond crumble was very odd.Gluey and unpalatable with little to recommend it. More almond in the crumble would have been nice too. The fudge was “candy” like , sugary and grainy but I was still very impressed, as I usually am, with the experience that is Blackfriars.

Really nice food. I could eat the beetroot feta and walnuts all day. Attentive (but not overly so) staff and a lovely venue.

I ordered the Turkey dinner for me and my daughter but when it arrived it was Luke warm not very hot which was very disappointing considering the price you pay. My fiancée ordered the nut roast dinner and same again not very warm! Was quite disappointed. Afterwards went to the bar for a little birthday/Xmas drink and told it shuts at 6pm so had 20 mins so decided not to bother 😭 wouldn’t hurry back had much better dinners and drinks elsewhere for half the price. Sorry just being honest….

The bread that came with it was rock hard though, as was the bread shared at the table. For main I had the beef welly. A reasonable slab of meat with good extras. The onion mash particularly was lovely. The side orders of roasties and root veg were great too. I had the chocolate almond gateux for dessert and that was excellent. Light sponge but very sweet. Not a fan of the coffee ice cream though! A fantastic venue and delightful service from all the staff. It's a popular place with my company so we're sure to be back again.

Went for the Christmas menu which has been virtually the same for the last few years. If you like Brussels sprouts you’re fine otherwise you have to eat your dinner with no veg as that’s the only veg on offer. This year instead of mine pies we were given cinnamon tablet. Absolutely disgusting no one enjoyed it, it was equivalent to a sugar cube with cinnamon syrup. Would we go again next year - no. It’s seen it’s a day and unless they overhaul the menu or improve the veg then it’s time to move on

We came here for an early ladies Christmas celebration and it did not disappoint! We were given choices from the Festive menu and it was excellent value for money and included a welcome drink, 3 courses, coffee and some Festive fudge! Staff were lovely and attentive and food was sublime! We will definitely be back and are already planning our next visit here!

A fabulous Christmas catch up with friends. We had the Christmas set menu, plenty of choice, excellent food and service, a glass of fizz on arrival, the staff were very friendly and the service was brilliant. The atmosphere was calm, quiet and very professional but in a relaxed way. We will definitely return.

Festive lunch booked for a party of 7 - Friendly and helpful staff, relaxed atmosphere, beautiful venue and of course, absolutely delicious food. Would highly recommend.

Hi, I wanted to do this over email rather than google but my email keeps failing. My partner and I visit everytime we are up North over the last 10 years. We are normally so pleased, hense the return but yesterday we came for the set menu which cost us £110 with one extra drink and the automatic service charge of £9, the set menu was so small in portion, I had nut roast and it came with 2 bits of beetroot and some mint on the side, no veg, no potatos or no yorkshire pud, my partner also did not have any veg for those extras it would be £5 per item. We felt it was the type of meal you would get at a budget christmas party for a very high price. At this stage we unfortunately would not return and were left very feeling we had wasted a lot of money. We didnt want to bring it up with the waiting staff as they were nice.

Excellent Christmas meal with family. All nine of us agreed it was very good. Service was unobtrusive but very good. The food was wonderful. Recommended but book a table as it gets very busy

Attended today for a wreath making class. Have done this for a number of years now as a treat - previous years have been excellent with good food, plenty wine and service. This year however a different tale. There was a £15 price increase which based on prior experience we were willing to pay, though we were left disappointed. Not the usual quality of food - like warm, rock hard sprouts and the crumble tasted as though the pot of cinnamon had fallen into it. Upon closer checking of the booking information it did actually state this year would only be one glass of wine per person, but with the price increase it seems a little out of kilter. I think value for money was reflected in the low number of people who attended this year compared to previous. Staff were understanding and did make offers to make up for our disappointment.

The wine tasting was a great experience, Darren was very knowledgeable and made it very interesting and relaxed. We will definitely be booking next year

We had a meal here recently, it was beautiful. We hadn't been before but both our kids had, spoke highly of it and bought us a voucher for a meal. The restaurant is great, lovely decor throughout, very old feel to it and rich furnishings 'proper posh'. The staff were all great, our server talked through the menu, explained how we use our voucher etc. nothing was too much trouble. We would highly recommend Blackfriars, well worth it for an amazing meal in a great atmosphere with great staff. We had the fish platter starter to share, very tasty and fresh. I had the venison which was beautiful, my wife had the fish with pasta, she loved that.

Staff Christmas Party Thursday 28th November 2024. Black Pudding starter - black overcooked and only luke warm. Turkey Dinner again food only lukewarm Ambience in restaurant very good, staff also very good. Would we return, perhaps but only if food was guarnateed to be hot

Absolutely fantastic place for dinner! The surroundings are beautiful and the food was incredible. Particularly loved the scallop starter and the beef wellington was one of the best we’ve ever had. All the staff were friendly and happy to give advice. Such a pity we live so far away!

One of my favourite places in Newcastle. Both the main restaurant and the snug bar are nice spots to spend some time and the food, wine and service have always been good here.

Recently had a lovely afternoon tea at Blackfriars’s, it was spoilt by having to ask frequently for our water to be topped up, when asked staff appeared put out. We had to ask to be moved table as 1st table was by kitchen, draughty and you had the kitchen smells. Disappointed

We were given a lunch voucher for a present and we really enjoyed our visit. All three courses that we chose were delicious and the meal came with 2 glasses of fizzy. The restaurant has an interesting history and had a pleasant atmosphere.

Great service exceptional food and great value for money would recommend trying there own brewed lager

We did the red wine tasting, it was great, lots of history & interesting facts! Maybe couldv'e done with a few more snacks as we ended up quite tipsy haha! Thanks to the host for his great enthusiasm

A lovely evening , food was exceptional we had the smoked haddock soufflé which was one of the best things we have ever tasted . The mains were great beautifully cooked with excellent flavours the monkfish in particular . Service was attentive and friendly . One of the best restaurants in Newcastle

Our Son chose this restaurant for lunch celebrating his 21st birthday. It was an excellent choice. Not just a stunningly beautiful building. The interior, the staff, food and service were all wonderful. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Definitely hope to visit here again

Food was delicious. We had the set lunch menu and the portions were perfectly sized. In addition to the wonderful food and extensive wine list, the staff are absolutely lovely. We can’t wait to come back. P.s. we also like that they add a little bit onto your bill to support a charity that helps to keep homeless people warm.

We had a table for 7:30pm which was not ready on our arrival. The restaurant was full. We ordered the house special which at £35 I'd have expected to be exceptional. It was OK but in my view overpriced. The fish was warm rather than hot. The waitress offered wine, one of our party asked for a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, we decided to have a bottle. The waitress suggested a bottle of Sancerre but did not give us the price. When the bill arrived and the Sancerre was £65 a bottle, I was rather surprised. There was a family with small children in the restaurant until at least 9:00pm. The screams from the children impacted the overall pleasant ambiance of the restaurant. I've been several times before and thought it was a rather special and unique experience. On the strength of last nights meal we'll not be rushing back.

Food was excellent, local and fresh ingredients. Really enjoyed the wine pairings, that complemented the food well. Some slight issues with timings (wine late / early, sides late with main) but didn’t spoil the overall experience.

Absolutely loved our cookery class today! Dietary requirements were so beautifully catered for too which we didn’t expect (gluten free in a cooking class making dim sum where I’d said I didn’t mind just making gluten and taking home as it’s very hard to accommodate.) Had the best time - loved it thank-you

Excellent food as always, home made sausages were excellent, only downside was we had a long wait for our starter but they acknowledged it and took them off the bill without any input from us. Would always recommend eating here

Lovely meal, lovely service, only comment is about children’s meals- roast beef was rare which was not liked by a young p, this was rectified by the staff who brought some well done beef; also the chocolate pudding wasn’t child friendly, both children could not eat it, but all adult meals beautiful.

We visited this restaurant for my birthday and my husband could not have picked a better place! The service was great, we were welcomed into the restaurant and on our table, there was a birthday card already placed from the restaurant which was lovely to see! The menu looked great and we couldn't decide on 2 starters so we got three and they were all absolutely delicious. The truffle & mascarpone tortellini... it was so good I could've cried and I nearly did. Instead, I tweeted about it straight away 😃 Just make sure you have a little bit of everything including the beetroot and the sauce in each bite and prepare to be amazed! You know that scene in ratatouille where he mixed different flavours together and there was fireworks and a swirl of different colours in the background? That's what this made me think of. Same with the wild mushroom pate... all the flavours come together perfectly and complement each other. The scallops looked beautiful and tasted great. Lastly the beef... there was so much of it on the plate (especially since we had 3 starters) and it was so well cooked and paired well with the peppercorn sauce. Unfortunately, I didn't have any room left for dessert. Overall, this was a great experience and one of the best places I have dined at. I am looking forward to visiting Blackfriars again!

The food last night was exceptional, I had the venison haunch and it was beautiful. The venison pie that came with it was out of this world!

After coming to Blackfriars for a number of years we felt the experience had gone downhill. We were in the small reception bar, just got our pre dinner drinks served and the waiter came to take us to the table, nothing wrong with this but we were early and would have liked to sit and have a drink first. We were seated and it all felt rather rushed. There used be be a Guy who would recommend wine pairing and give some background on the dishes, that’s all gone now, just robotic staff. Our starters came and they were fine. However, the mains were very poor. Wife had Monkfish and I had Pan Fried Cod, the Monkfish was very small and although the Cod was a reasonable size, it was dry and tasteless, under seasoned, bland pasta that seemed to have dried out due to absence of any sauce (it may have been left under the heaters for too long?). I actually sent it back. We left feeling quite saddened as this place was fantastic a few years back and we even had a “Lockdown Christmas Lunch” during Covid. Such a shame. The City needs good quality restaurants, and Blackfriars was one that I always recommend to anyone visiting the area, maybe they were just having a bad day, or maybe the standards have dropped, let’s hope it was a one off.

Good local produce cooked extremely well! We enjoy every time we go!

This was our second visit to Blackfriars and the food and service were excellent on both occasions. The drinks menu is also fantastic. This is a real gem of a place. Would highly recommend.

The venue is hidden away in the city walls of Newcastle upon Tyne and has a really old cloistered feel to it. We were early but still shown to our table and the staff were brilliant. Friendly, knowledgable and engaging. The menu is not too large but has some great choices and when it arrived you may think it’s a modest portion into the end !! Oh no that was perfect … and I like my food!! Desert was great and the wine selection very reasonable .. They don’t serve Guinness but I can forgive them for that. Lovely meal definitely recommend, not cheap but not too expensive and worth every penny. Thanks for the evening and we will be back soon

We had a large team dinner here while in town for work and it was a great experience. A very unique restaurant with delicious food Service was spectacular.

Great location. Staff were very friendly and the restaurant has a warm and cozy atmosphere. Service was excellent, and I would like to say a special thank you to are server. He had a goatee ( but I didn’t get his name). Was great. The food was tremendous. I had the pork and it was very tender and cooked to perfection. On the downside. Parking I should imagine could be a problem if you don’t know Newcastle. We were just lucky to get a spot really close. I would definitely go again. The price I thought was reasonable.

Absolutely fantastic! Service and food outstanding

Took my hubby, kids & partners for Sunday lunch & we weren't disappointed. The set menu is very reasonably priced & I can't complain re portion size. Lamb is a must & the yorkshires are the best I've ever had. Will definitely return, looking forward to it already!

Nice historical environment but too noisy. Staff were busy in managing too many customers. The goat cheese starter was goof but the curried cod was not quite to my taste. I appreciate their effort though.
