Nice historical environment but too noisy. Staff were busy in managing too many customers. The goat cheese starter was goof but the curried cod was not quite to my taste. I appreciate their effort though.

We went for lunch where only the set menu is served. Myself and my husband were both disappointed. All courses came out very quickly, too quickly in fact. All courses looked great, we felt it was style over substance. Goats cheese starter was too bland, could have done with some pickled veg to cut through the creaminess. The black pudding was too crispy and difficult to cut. The curried cod was dry and barely any curry flavour. The cheesecake also lacked flavour. Everything was okay but we just expected better from this restaurant.

What a wonderful find on our trip to Newcastle! We had never been to the beautiful 'toon' before and came across this stunning, historic building, whilst exploring, on a 2-night trip. We were so glad that we could book a table for the same evening. The food was amazing - my friend and I both had the caramelised polenta, with foraged mushrooms and baby onions. The flavours were immense and the jus was so rich. I finished with a divine pecan treacle tart and my friend said that the cheese board was one of the best she has had in a restaurant. In addition to the food and the beautiful surroundings, the staff was amazing - a big 'shout out' to Alfie Jack Shaw, who had recently been hired at the restaurant, after starting at Uni. He's a charmer, alright, so the restaurant would do well to keep him on, as he will be a great asset to an already incredible team. I could not recommend this restaurant highly enough to anyone lucky to be planning a trip to the friendliest 'toon' in the UK!

This is about the 5th time I've been to the venue and never really had anything bad to say at all so not written a review till now. Usually 5/5. Had a table for Sunday lunch at 1145, which appreciate is early, but the place was open just before this. Stood at the front desk for quite a while before anyone came to acknowledge us. Starters were amazing. Goats cheese and fishcake faultless. Sunday roast beef was simply inedible. Both my guest and I ordered the same, served pink but I chewed the first mouthful for ages and just couldn't swallow it. She said the same. Nothing to do with it being pink. Just very poor quality. No complaints at all when we asked for a swap for lamb, which was great. Guy on the next table left almost all of his beef due to the same. Hoping this isn't a typical Sunday experience. I'll be back again for their set menu but I'll stick to a Saturday now I think.

Never eaten here before. Loved the atmosphere and the design of the restaurant. We were quickly shown to our table. Server was very knowledgeable and gave us time to look over our options. When it came to ordering food and drinks he ensured we had everything we wanted and offered wine pairings (we don't drink wine so declined those) checked in with us to make sure everything was OK and was very friendly throughout. Drinks we had 2 cocktails and 2 schooners. Lovely. Passion in the tunnel was yum. Food was amazing. We ate off the set menu. Goats cheese and black pudding for starter. Curried cod and chicken pot pie for main. We made sure there was room for desert too with black forest cheesecake and pecan treacle tart. First visit but absolutely won't be the last

Haddock soufflé and chicken parfait staters were full of flavour and beautifully presented. Venison haunch and Duck en croute were simply delicious, so tasty, so much flavour and, again, beautifully presented too. Chocolate opera cake was delicious, Mille-feuille with goats cheese was a change to the sweet dessert I’d normally have but really tasty and well worth trying if you like a savoury change. Service was great, made to feel very welcome and special by every member of the team. The building and courtyard make the whole thing feel that extra bit special too. Loved it so much, I got married there! Blackfriars is a 13th-century Friary, which having housed King's and nobleman, has opened isefl as a fantastic restaurant and wedding venue. The food at Blackfriars is to die for, with the restaurant winning several national awards and the menu changing seasonally. Me and my partner loved it so much, we decided to look into getting married there, and it was amazing! The food was delicous, the staff will bend over backwards to make it memorable and to make everything goes smoothly and the location is centre of Newcastle (you wouldn't think it was when looking at it) If you want a memorable dining experience with delicous food, I highly recommend

Came here for our wedding breakfast last Friday. The banquet room was beautiful but the service wasn’t great. The food was cold - both the mains and the starters. There were only 2 servers to get all of the food out (for 24 guests). I did complain to Blackfriars about our service after the event and they acknowledged they hadn’t performed to their best and refunded our service charge. Unfortunately our wedding day is not an experience we can replicate and ultimately we were disappointed.

My recent Sunday lunch at Blackfriars Restaurant was nothing short of extraordinary. Nestled in a historic building, the ambiance was both cozy and elegant, setting the stage for a memorable dining experience. The meal began with a selection of freshly baked bread and creamy butter, a delightful start that hinted at the quality to come. For the main course, I opted for the traditional roast lamb, which was cooked to perfection—succulent, tender, and bursting with flavor. However, the true star of the meal was the mint sauce. Often an overlooked accompaniment, Blackfriars' version was a revelation. It struck the perfect balance between sweetness and acidity, with a fresh, vibrant flavor that elevated the lamb to new heights. The mint sauce was clearly made with the freshest ingredients, adding a zesty, aromatic touch that complemented the richness of the meat beautifully. The side dishes were equally impressive. The roasted vegetables were caramelized to perfection, and the potatoes were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Each component of the meal was thoughtfully prepared and executed with precision. Service throughout was impeccable, with attentive and knowledgeable staff who made the dining experience seamless and enjoyable. In summary, Blackfriars Restaurant provided an outstanding Sunday lunch that exceeded all expectations. The highlight was undeniably the mint sauce, a simple yet transformative addition that showcased the chef's skill and attention to detail. I highly recommend this gem for anyone seeking a superb dining experience.

We had our wedding ceremony and daytime at Blackfriars this summer and I’d absolutely recommend them to anyone. Throughout the whole process Laura has been excellent, super organised and helpful whenever we had questions or anything like that. She really took a lot of stress off our plate and knowing she was only ever a quick email or phone call away was great. On the day itself the master of ceremony, Daniel, was a delight. Our day didn’t exactly go to plan, we ended up starting way later and the times getting thrown off thanks to the taxi leaving without the bride and a replacement never being sent leading to a march through Newcastle, but they handled this well and happily shuffled everything without complaint. On their part, the day was run so smoothly, food was all brought out in good time (which was delicious and we’ve had so many positive comments about the meal since, especially the vegan option), people’s wine glasses were always getting topped up (particularly the bride and groom’s by Dan), and bar service was fast. Other members of staff quietly handled little issues that came up, for example, Hayley helped one guest who’d misplaced the grooms cufflinks find them quietly. The office staff were also great, another guest commented how helpful Lauren was when they were trying to sort something. Basically, the whole venue was professional and treated us very well. If you have visited the venue at all you know how nice it is already, but the photographs we have look amazing and that’s in no small part due to the venue looking as great as it does! We didn’t have our evening at Blackfriars as we needed somewhere with a lot more capacity and the contrast between the two venues cannot be understated. The professionalism and ease of service at Blackfriars was in a different league and it became even clearer how well versed these staff are at putting on an amazing wedding. The two of us had also been here for other things, including whisky tasting, wine tasting, wreath making and some meals; how much we enjoyed those events led us to picking it as our wedding venue. I’m more than happy to recommend Blackfriars no matter if it’s for a wedding or something smaller, we’ve always had a great time there.

Such a massive disappointment!! “A la carte”?? I had catch of the day, which was herb crusted cod with greens and new potatoes. It looked like it had been flung on the plate! Zero presentation, and really bland, the entire plate was just green with a couple of boiled potatoes. It looked a bit like a school dinner, it wasn’t cheap either, £35 for my dish alone. We were in and out within an hour and £108.00 lighter!! (Main course each and two drinks each) Real shame, would not recommend

We usually attend events like this because we really enjoy tasting menus, but unfortunately, this experience fell short, especially considering the price. While the wine was excellent and the presenter was knowledgeable, I was disappointed that two courses featured fortified wine, which isn't to everyone's taste. The food itself was quite basic. We had a gazpacho, a course of bread and butter, followed by a main of mackerel, which was burnt, and duck that was overly salty. Dessert was a vegan raspberry cake, which I understand appeals to some, but I found the texture of the vegan chocolate/cheesecake to be too jelly-like for my liking. Overall, I can't say I enjoyed the evening. I had informed the restaurant that it was our anniversary, but they didn't make any special gestures. For £125 per person, I expected much more.

The evening was hosted by Harry - he taught us how to make 4 different types of cocktails and gave us lots of interesting facts about the spirits we were using. I would definitely recommend this evening for any cocktail lovers and I would also recommend Blackfriars’s bar for cocktails made properly. We rounded our evening off with a table in the restaurant. The food was beautifully cooked and flavoursome - it really helped soak up all that alcohol too! Thank you to everyone at Blackfriars for making our night so enjoyable.

Lovely place, however the price of 0% beer was too high.

Visited for a treat lunch with my wife and sadly the experience was lacking due to firstly the time between finishing the starter and main course being brought out of around 30 minutes, which then leads the main problem of both of our main courses being cold. Such a fundamental problem where the phrase, "you had one job" seems apt. The serving staff were of course polite and we were given two glasses of prosecco as an apology, but while the gesture was appreciated, we would rather have had a trouble free dining experience at a place that supposedly prides itself in it's high quality food and service.

Sadly Tisanes has gone downhill. We’ve been going for years here but haven’t been for a while. Today’s lunch was the most disappointing experience we’ve had in memory. The white bread for my sons bacon and sausage sandwich was embarrassingly poor, Mothers Pride at best. My wife had ham and cheese toastie on granary which was better if small. The side salads are tiny and limp. My soup (I had asked if it was home made and the lady didn’t know) was of “acceptable tin” quality but very small quantity. Just to add insult to injury, I gave an honest and polite appraisal to the waitress quietly. She said she would pass it on. We were then charged full price and offered no reduction. Advise to Tisanes, don’t confuse price with value Simply will not go back again.

Great atmosphere. There are lots of boardgames to borrow, a huge chess board and they do pub quizzes. Food is American diner style and the portions are huge. Dog friendly.

Always love the food from here, seems very traditional and home cooked, none of the frozen veg, always greeted and lovely staff, quite quick with food.

My husband(!) and I had our wedding lunch here 31st October 2024. What a delightful time we had! As we were catering for 30 people, we used outside caterers (can recommend Community Catering) and The Hub made sure there was enough space for them to set out food lovely. The bar selection was great for our needs and they even ensured there was a small cocktail menu available at our request (pina coladas are delicious!). Jill and Heather took care of our every need when arranging the event (and during) and I think were even more excited than me! They made the space absolutely beautiful for us. Many of our guests had not been before and were very impressed and will certainly be back again soon as customers. The other staff in attendance on the day were great too, happy, friendly and polite. It is a fabulous little hidden gem of a location which is perfect for a walk (or cycle!) along the Quayside or the Ouseburn, with beautiful views along the river Tyne with backdrop of the bridges. Although we were unable to use their food at our event, we have eaten here before and it has always been delicious. It is worth noting too that they use as many local suppliers and small business as possible which in my view is really worth celebrating. Keep an eye on their drinks menu as it changes with the season which is a lovely little touch too. On a cold day, you can still sit outside to enjoy the view too as they even have some blankets that you can borrow to keep the chill off. Thanks again, from the new Mr and Mrs Burnett.

Love this cafe/ restaurant! My boyfriend and I had the best breakfast this morning of their Hangover Crumpet and Eggs Benedict. They were full when we arrived ( always a good sign) so they switched on the heaters and gave us blankets outside while we waited and then we got our table. Such good customer service, the staff are all so friendly. Definitely a new favourite breakfast stop in Jesmond and can’t wait to try a cake!
