Sorry should have done this months ago. We had my friends SURPRISE birthday party here with kareoki and food. Amazing night and felt very welcome. The food was wonderful and the birthday cake which was ordered privately was outstanding. Cannot faugt this place. Wish I could of held it outside, with a marquee, But weather was not agreeable. Shame cos they have an amazing garden. And they are DOG FRIENDLY as well. What more could you ask for.. THANK YOU BLACK HORSE FOR A WONDERFUL EVENING.

We went here for a family meal while staying at Crowhurst Park. The pub is in easy walking distance of Crowhurst. We had booked a table in advance, as there were 13 of us. The staff were very friendly & accommodating. The drinks were good & everyone enjoyed their meals. My wife had Duck which looked lovely & I had some of the best pork belly I've ever had. We will definitely return if we are in the area.

Service slow but helpful. Had a couple of issues but chef on duty salted this for us .Will visit again but when the sun's out nice little old style pub 😎

Great food, great service and great venue. Quality of the food was wonderful, excellent portion size, taste, presentation ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️😋 The vegetable lasagne was exquisite. The venue was tastefully decorated this combined with great staff including the pub cat who was happy to meet and greet really makes this a great eatery to visit. Friendly, clean and cosy! Have stopped for a quick drink here twice over the past week and feel we’ve found an absolute gem of a pub. Owners super friendly and very welcoming, interior is lovely and was very festive with a glorious display of Christmas decorations. This place will be a regular visit for us!

Stopped in for lunch on our way home from a short break in Hastings. Wonderful Steak and Vegetable Wellington. Nice atmosphere and courteous staff. Also the whole place was very clean, would highly recommend. Thanks

We stopped off here today around 4.30 after a very long journey. What can I say, we were welcomed with our dog, the waitress was so lovely, we didn’t fancy a Sunday roast so I chose the chilli which was delicious as was the gammon and ham egg and chips, will definitely return here, such a lovely place.

Just had an excellent Sunday roast with the family. One of best roasts in the area. Staff are friendly and the service was great. Highly recommended.

Fab meal once again! We enjoyed a lovely meal tonight at The Black Horse. We had the pea and asparagus risotto with sea bream and the minted lamb pie with chips and veg…..Followed by apple and rhubarb crumble and custard. A Cointreau coffee finished the meal off. Great service and piping hot tasty meals…..We will be back!

Nice village pub a couple of miles to the north of Hastings. Varied menu, we'll cooked with good service. Home cooked desserts - very filling. All in all a lovely family meal at a reasonable price.

Good food, and not too expensive by today's prices. Food took about 45 minutes to arrive, no one else was there. The lighting is very poor with 'cool white' Christmas lights everywhere which completely changes the feel of the place, rather than a cosy evening pub feel it was more like like cold supermarket lighting.

Back again last week, birthday treat in Crowhurst 4 nights and always eat in the Black Horse, Deborah, John, Chrissie and Matthew thank you very much for the delicious food and warm atmosphere.

We have been here many times. Generally service is pretty average but food is plentiful and of good quality so we have persevered as it’s so local to where we live. We’ve enjoyed the fact that we can walk with the family and have a meal without driving. However, I’ve never actually felt a warm welcome other than from the guy that seems to be there helping a lot. The owner looks like she would rather be elsewhere and if you wait at the bar you don’t even get acknowledged with a smile let alone greeted. This particular occasion, I met my friend for lunch. She had a pate starter and chips and I had jacket potato with tuna mayonnaise. I had only eaten a banana and biscuit before coming so was looking forward to it. It took nearly an hour to arrive even though there were just 2 other tables in. This happened on our previous visit at Christmas but again, we’ve persevered due to location for us. On this occasion, within an hour I had excruciating pain in my stomach which was followed by me being very unwell. I messaged them the following day to say purely to warn them to throw the tuna just in case it was that as it was all I could think it could be. I said that I was certainly not moaning and just letting them know. They read it and completely ignored the message. I thought about writing a trip advisor review but I normally leave positive ones if I really feel happy. Rarely have I left a negative but this is totally justified. The last visit and how unwell I was alongside all the previous factors mean we will not go again. It’s such a shame. It’s got all the ingredients to be amazing and a perfect rural pub but it’s lacklustre service lets it down. I’m sure the being unwell was a one off but I’m not giving another chance given they can’t even respond to their customers.

Lovely pub, warm and inviting. Friendly staff and a good range of drinks. Had a light lunch here with the wife and was blown away with the quality.

Absolutely a top class Sunday lunch, Especially the Yorkshire puddings. I’m from Yorkshire so I’m fussy about the Yorkshire puddings. Food was hot and substantial portions. Staff are friendly Will definitely be booking lunch here again. Highly recommend it

Came here for dinner a couple of nights ago with with my partner and our two youngest (14 and 12) whilst staying locally. Lovely pub, cosy feel, great friendly service and plenty of choice on the menu (plus specials on the board). To start my partner had the smoked salmon, our son had the oriental prawns and I had the deep fried brie - all were really tasty. For our mains my partner had liver and onions, the kids had baked potato and cheese and ribs and chips and I had the pork belly, which was cooked to perfection and came with a delicious onion sauce, potatoes and vegetables. Very enjoyable meal!

Today, Sunday was very busy at the Black Horse. Staff continued to take bookings when the main area was full. Despite an on line booking we were sat in a very unassuming inhospitable upstairs room. During the hour that we sat waiting for our meal two other families joined us and we all thought that we had been forgotten.When the food eventually arrived one dish, lasagne was uncooked. It was returned to the kitchen and micro waved. This didn't improve the hard pasta. The management agreed not to charge for the dish. Everyone left after the main meal a further wait wasn't possible.This was a special occasion when we entertained old friends. The visit and food was an embarrassment and not one we are likely to repeat.

We were staying at nearby Crowhurst Lodges. Wanted a Sunday roast and we were not disappointed,very good food and friendly staff, so good we went again on the Wednesday and booked again for the Friday. Highly recommended..

Booked for an early evening meal, pub was clean and well presented. Staff friendly and welcoming. Food came in good time and was hot and well presented, the belly pork was very good, however the whitebait was over cooked and not fresh and the oriental prawns were bought in frozen and over cooked. If you do visit go for the home cooked dishes.

We booked a table for 7.15pm, finally got our main course at 9.00pm, when we asked why, were told we had ordered meals that take a long time to cook, my son asked for Med/rare steak, didn't see any blood juice whatsoever, I had pork belly, which ordinarily would have been lovely but eating after 9pm just not appetising, my hubby ordered smoked haddock Mornay..... fish takes a long time to cook apparently. We did have starters 50 minutes before the main. Which were cook by numbers deep fried Why was it difficult??? If you eat here ..... be very patient. You guessed it, we won't be returning

First time visitors for Sunday lunch. The food was excellent, one of the nicest roast beef dinners I've had out. Other members of our party had steak pie and lasagne and all said it was delicious. Portion sizes were generous and it is very reasonably priced. Customer service was attentive and friendly. We'll definitely be back.

Staying at the nearby Crowhurst Lodges so walked here for an early evening meal. Enjoyed a quick drink in the garden before sitting down to order. Food was fantastic, four plates of piping hot, hearty, home cooked, pub grub! From fish and chips to steak and kidney pudding there certainly weren't any complaints! Only disappointment was that we could only manage two desserts between the four of us!!Well done! Carry on doing what you're doing!

We went to The Black Horse for lunch had lovely homemade steak pies, big porciones. Will be back again

First time visitors.The pub wasn't overly busy when we arrived we were told where to sit and that a member of staff would take our order at the table .. 10mins passed and we were seen to give our drinks order and given menus.Upon returning to our table the service was terrible in the middle of taking our order the older waitress left the table to answer the phone without even telling us. She came back to the table and no apologies given for walking away mid order.We gave our order and waited almost 30 mins for three starters. To which two of them (deep fried bree) came out frozen in the centre. We asked for them to be changed as the other guest carried on eating their starter. They were redone and brought back to us, we said thankyou and carried on. After finishing our starters our plates were cleared and we waited again over 45 mins for our mains. I will say again the place was not packed out, but the kitchen obviously couldn't cope.Mains - three different mains were ordered. The pie was ok but not overly impressed by the pastry top it fell apart on to the plate.Belly pork was overcooked and the mash was instant as you could see flakes in it.And as for the crispy duck .. it was not crispy it was soggy on the top the underneath was tough and chewy .. I know duck is a fatty meat but this was disappointing. The bland vegetables were cold and all in all we wont be visiting again. We only went to eat out in a local pub to help them with their business. As things are hard and local pubs need support. They were doing 50% on Bill's but We didn't expect on service food and hospitality.

All staff greet you with a smile.We have been dining here on a very regular basis ,as a couple or with family and friends.The food is always amazing, having eaten across the menu, the chef is a magician.Please support this lovely local, you won't be dissapointed.

We visited this pub/restaurant on a camping trip ended up coming in two nights on the trot what can I say the staff are sooo polite and helpful the food absolutely worth the price the decor is nice just like your normal old fashioned style pub small ceilings mind your head lol and beams across the ceilings and walls etc it makes the atmosphere even better thank you black horse in for the wonderful evenings and meals if we ever come camping this way again we will be sure to revisit. I couldn’t recommend this place enough.

We just had a Sunday roast takeaway from here, got to say very well organised. Most enjoyable food, will use the takeaway again. Definitely recommend.

We went for Sunday lunch which is served between 12 noon and 8 pmWe waited at least 15 minutes before finally getting menus then to be told there was only Beef available or possibly one serving of Turkey but we could from the main menu too. The order was finally placed and ONE HOUR FIFTEEN MINUTES later we got our meal.While eating our meal we noticed the next table we’re all eating Turkey.Vegetables were undercooked and Beef overcooked

We have just had our dinner here and what a lovely pub, with great staff and superb homecooked food.... The crackling pork was perfect with crispy crackling and melt in the mouth pork, veg was cooked just right... We will definitely be going back...

We called at short notice for Sunday dinner, they happily fitted us in although it was quite busy (3.30pm). The staff were very friendly, the atmosphere was lovely. We waited around 30 minutes before the food came out, we had a roast pork, roast beef and my husband had liver and bacon. Our plates were clean, and the yorkshire puddings were the best! 10/10 to the Black Horse, we will definitely be returing. Lovely food, lovely atmosphere and lovely staff!

went on the spire of the moment last friday night for a meal which was fantastic nice warm welcome from debs and chris (which is most unusual ) these days .they took our orders for drinks which where bought over to our table.food order was taken which all came out very hot and cooked to perfection large portions ' all in all a good night out

Can't tell you about the food it never arrived.We arrived dead on the dot at our booked time, 2pm, Sunday. Tried to order drinks at bar but told our order would be taken at Table. Young lad appeared who had no idea what ale or wine was available. Ordered a Merlot and spitfire, but he couldn't take food order. After 20 mins no drinks and no food order taken. Chased and food order taken. Another 40 mins no food, no explanation. Was told our order had been taken to wrong table and sent back to kitchen ??? Paid for our drinks and left without eating.

Another lovely roast dinner!!! You will not be disappointed. Have eaten many times here and definitely have no complaints! Friendly staff and very reasonable prices. Easy to park and get to. Will definitely be back soon!

Thought we would go to the Black Horse for Sunday roast with our friends who were visiting us for the first time.

Pleasantly surprised to be offered a dinner for my dogs, only asked for a water bowl. At £3 each absolute bargain and not a spot was left.

Great value for money,we had the roast beef as this was all that was available but it was delicious good portion size lovely tasting meat and vegetables nice gravy only thing wrong was the roast potatoes were tough on the outside we also had a pudding which was delicious too, good service and friendly staff

We visited the pub whilst we in the area and had a lovely Sunday lunch with a super chocolate cake for dessert.

Don't go here if your not local you have to wait longer while they are served first.waited 40 Minutes for our food. When I asked told pie takes longer rubbish as soon I said something we had our food. Food ok

Great Sunday roast and squeezed a table of ten at short notice. £8 roast was delicious and good size. Other main courses went down well. Brilliant gem upstairs with skittles alley in the roof.

Popped in here for a Sunday afternoon pint. Friendly service as always. Good pricing. And the really comfy sofa at the end of the bar was available.

I reserve 5 for top notch restaurants but this has to be four and a half! It is dog friendly. We sat up one end of the bar because I know some people don't like dogs when they are eating. Several times we were told not to sit up the other end but to join the rest of the customers! Really friendly staff and customers, we felt instantly at home.

I have to say this is the second time I've visited. The first time it was lovely but the second time wasn't so good.

Been to this pub quite a few times and have always found the pub to be run by the most loveliest people. I am in a wheelchair and so long as you make them aware of this when booking a table they are really accommodating and helpfull. They have a toilet downstairs which is a bit tight on space but with these old pubs thats what you get, I am lucky I can just about get out of my chair to get into the cubicle so this may be a problem for people unable to move, also loo is a bit low down so I struggle to get up. Food is excellent and if there is too much they will put it in a tub or wrap it in foil for you to take home. Very pleasant atmosphere.

This is our local pub but stopped going here about 5 years ago. But thought we would give it a try again. The web site said it was dog friendly and gives a warm welcome to dogs. Wrong.

The service is awful, we were sat on a plastic table all cramped with 8 people, they then took around 1 hour before we complained about where our food was. They then went and got food which was actually another tables food, therefore they then took it away from us. Worst experience I’ve ever had and will not go back. Worst part about it is that when the women realised she actually laughed. And no apology was actually given after all this had happened!

Had another excellent meal here last night. I took a friend who had never been before she's going back for the roast on sunday now! Food is always pipeing hot and fresh, the waitress very pleasant and the bill reasonable.

Couldn't be bothered to cook, so went here. Food was absolutely delicious. The roast 3 of us had was ace, daughter really enjoyed her fish and chips. Beer was good. Staff as friendly as ever.

Needed home cooked food without the hassle! Steak and ale pie absolutely gorgeous. Full of flavour. Would highly recommend. My husband had roast pork which was also lovely. Lots of fresh vegetables too. You won’t leave hungry! Also very reasonably priced.

On a rainy miserable Sunday the offering of a traditional roast at the nearby pub was too good an opportunity to miss

we waited well over an hour for service and when the food arrived, it was shocking.. the fish and chips were a greasy wet mush..not skinned or boned....vile, the lasagna came with its own side dish of cling film..nearly the tastiest part...the pub was fully booked, obviously they had not been there before...there was a battle just across the road...probably started by the bad service and standards

On our first visit to this pub we had liver and bacon and it was delicious as was our daughters chicken burger, we would have given it 5 stars, however our second visit was very different. I was looking forward to ordering the haddock mornay but they didn't have this or the pie of the day or the gammon and considering that this was at 6.30 in the evening we thought that this was pretty poor. We eventually placed our order for homemade lasagne and a spicy chicken burger. Our food arrived an hour later, the lasagne was really over cooked and dry with no sauce to speak of, the chicken burger was also dry and to top things off there was a hair in my lasagne. It was such a disappointment as we had really looked forward to going back, but we wouldn't go back there again after this experience.

We visited this pub on Sunday with friends and our children in search of a traditional roast dinner and a few drinks. The way we were greeted as we entered the pub was just first class, a very personal service and made you feel extremely welcomed. The selection of food, tasty desserts and overall service was second to none. A hidden gem and a must try pub if you are ever in the area. Well done to all the staff for a truly memorable experience.

8 of us (4 adults & 4 children) cycled to The Black Horse from a campsite nearby and as soon as we walked through the door the friendly greeting was wonderful. The landlord is so helpful, thoughtful and welcoming it felt like it was a pub we’d been going to for years! We’re four young(ish?!) parents and friends and it didn’t feel at all like a stuffy old locals only pub. Our young children were well catered for and they all thoroughly enjoyed their food and were very excited about their milkshakes afterwards!

Have visited this lovely traditional pub twice this year and recieved extremely warm welcomes on both occasions. I am in a wheelchair and the staff bent over backwards to accommodate. Food and service superb. The only thing was a lack of downstairs loo BUT we didn't ask so there may have been and we didn't know!!!

Easy walk up the road from Brakes Coppice campsite, went for an evening snack, very welcoming atmosphere with both friendly owners and nice customers. The chips were hot and fresh and very delicious, and the drinks were ice cold. Would definitely recommend.
