We went for evening meal and after reading some reviews we decided to book a table. On arrival we were suprised at how rude the bar staff were, very unprofessional and not helpful at all.We were going to finish our drinks and leave but decided as it was late to just order. What a mistake that was the Lamb Shank was from freezer and the mash was instant mash, not to mention the tinned green beans.Avoid at all cost

We are staying near by we have been into the pub twice and ordered take away. Great family run pub, that makes those outside of the village really welcome. The family that run it are lovely, really chatty, down to earth people. Food is proper honest pub grub, at a reasonable price. They do a great pint of hobgoblin too. Would definitely recommend.

My wife and I popped into the Black Horse just before our arrival at The Manor - and because it was the only local pub open on aTuesday. The establishment is extremely tired looking. The meals we had were mediocre at best! There were a number of guests having meals and we got the impression from the familiarity between them and the staff that they were frequent local diners. Will drive past next!

Just had a wonderful Sunday Lunch at the Black Horse in Tollerton with my family. There were 8 of us and the staff couldn’t have been more welcoming and helpful. Vegans, children and meat lovers were all well accommodated, and the food was really beautifully cooked and tasty! This is a small, friendly, cozy pub, exactly what was needed and we shall be returning again.

Wouldn’t bother wasting your time coming to this pub. We went in with 2 friends one evening and my friend went to the bar, waited ages to be served even though it was dead, wasn’t acknowledged by the person working behind the bar which is just so rude especially when you’re stood there for a while and doesn’t give that ‘warm welcome’ you expect in a small village. Not that nice inside either, lacking seating and just general atmosphere. Definitely will not be going again.

Absolutely disappointed went for a family meal of 10. Cost £130 took 1 hr from point of sitting down for the first meal to arrive then took a further 20min for the remaining meals to arrive the pizzas were burnt the chicken was dry when asked at the end of the meal how it was the we told the lady our concerns to get the reply that the cook was on his own and could not cope with a order of 10 bearing in mind that we actually precooked this meal and they admitted that they should of put more staff on. The lady behind the bar was very rude and abrupt

Wow , just had our second meal in this wonderful pub . The Black Horse pub in Tollerton is so good. From the folks that run the pub to the fantastic quality wine and beer , then the food amazing. If you are in the area please call in. We had on the first visit a warm welcome and a fantastic meal, then on the Wednesday we called in for the steak night . We both had the fillet steak. Incredible. The meal came with all the trimmings and the wine also with the meal was beautiful wine from New Zealand. We were only in the area for 2 nights and have missed out on their Roast Dinner on Sunday. Would have loved to sample that also.

We were staying at The Burn Hall Hotel and googled pubs nearby and The Black Horse came up so we decided to book a table and so glad we did. We were greeted with a warm welcome and seated and I ordered the lasagne which came wit chips and salad and my Husband ordered fish, chips and mushy peas. The lasagne was gorgeous and the salad was so delicious. My Husband enjoyed his meal too and when we are next in the area, we will come back here. Definitely recommend it.

We visited here twice whilst staying nearby at The Burn Hall hotel after seeing the good reviews. We booked the first night and were not left disappointed, the owners are lovely and welcoming and nothing is too much to trouble, excellent menu variety with lots of choice and home cooked which is the added bonus. We were that impressed we booked the second night of our stay for food and again fantastic. All of our party were pleased with the dishes they ordered, huge portions, delicious and well presented. Overall fantastic service and it's lovely to see an old style country pub with warm and cosy decor and a lovely open fire. We would definitely visit and return if we visit the area or nearby York again. The chicken Kiev is one of the best I have had!Keep up the good work guys and good luck during these hard times. Another fabulous meal at the Black Horse, Tollerton. The Coconut and Chilli Chicken was so delicious with a sumptuously thick and creamy sauce. Creamy but not overly rich and accompanied by flat breads keeps this dish beautifully balanced. My husband and daughter were equally impressed with their choices of fish and gammon respectively.3 clean plates!!A warm welcome awaits visitors and regulars alike to this gem of a local.Well recommended

It's a friendly pub for sure but the food, although not badly priced, was very average and what you would expect from a pub. The Gammon was fine but the Chilli Ginger Chicken although reasonably tasty was watery and not the creamy sauce I expected. How you're meant to eat it with Flat Bread I don't know - it needed rice. I don't think that I'll be back.

Arrived early as usual as know can get busy. The beer was brilliant...kept going back for more which is a sure sign. I started with deep fried Whitebait and gave to say I've not had better. I followed this up with the half chicken special with garlic butter. This was served with a separate jug of garlic butter and a tasty side salad as well as the amazing chips served here (wish I knew the secret). My wife had the Haddock and Prawn Risotto which was also brilliant. Well done to the chef - that was a fantastic meal. I visit my friend who lives in the area at least twice a year. This pub has changed hands most times we’ve been. Each time the issue has been the same as if the staff can’t be bothered with customers. After driving 140 miles I didn’t want to drive to the far superior Bluebell Inn at Alne. We walked into an empty pub to be told the chef had gone sick ok not a problem can’t be helped. Barmaid was distracted looking after her kids and got the impression it was a nuisance having customers in the pub. On the plus point the steak burgers were really nice but the pizza was pretty awful. Appreciate the chef issue isn’t their fault but felt like I’d just walked into the Slaughtered Lamb in American Werewolf in London!!!

Had high hopes for this pub given the good reviews. They had sold out of fish and chips on a Friday night by 7.30pm and didn't have our second choice available either. We had to get our own menus and waited over an hour for the meal to come. When it did arrive the waitress sent the chef's apologies for the oven chips - they'd run out of home made chips. They were soft and soggy and my gammon was swimming in oil. When I expressed my disappointment to the waitress at the end she said all of the problems were due to them being busy. Surely they've been doing this long enough to be able to cope? Won't return.

I used to live in Tollerton so I know this pub very well, however, this was my first visit under the new management. We arrived as a group of 6 adults and 2 children towards the end of the breakfast period but we were still welcomed in. We put the young waitress through quite a few minutes of chaotic food and drinks ordering on our part but she remained completely pleasant and professional. We sat in the beer garden and were served a delicious array of cooked breakfast, coffee, soft drinks and Prosecco based Bucks Fizz with a large plate of lovely toast to begin with. I have to say that I was delighted to see the improvements and subtle, but stylish changes the new Manager and staff have brought to this little village treasure that seem to be bringing it out of what I can only call, its 'Dark Period'. Definitely worth a visit!

Plenty of options on the 2 for £12 menu. You can't go wrong at that price. Will definitely be back.

We have friends in Tollerton and visit at least 5 x times a year. In recent years we had boycotted the pub as the previous owners were awful! Well done to the new owners as they have made this a welcoming village pub for both locals and tourists like us! We took the advice of our friends and booked for Sunday lunch at 3.30. What I really liked was unlike a lot of other local pubs they serve lunch till 5 for those of us that prefer a late meal. Excellent value for money £8.95 for one course and £12.95 including a pudding. The plate of food was very generous with home made mash and yorkshires. The only negative is that they only had 3 deserts on the menu and I didn't like any of them otherwise I would have had one based on the quality of the main course. Great value only £30 approx including wine for two will definitely be back.

Went in for a drink with my partner and was greeted immediately. Everyone was so welcoming and its such a cosy place. The food is delicious! The burgers are very big but very nice. I will defiently be going back here and recommending the black horse to locals and my friends. Brilliant!

We were on holiday in Yorkshire in July 2015 and stayed in Tollerton. The Black Horse was very welcoming, with a friendly landlord and jovial locals. The beer is good and the food servings were ample. The children ate free during the school holidays which is a nice gesture. As holidaymakers we were made to feel most welcome and the locals gave us good pointers on places to visit. A nice bunch of folk. The new landlord, Graham the Jam fan, is clearly trying to rejuvenate the place and even over the course of our week's stay the place was beginning to be smartened up. It's to be hoped this pace of change continues and the residents of Tollerton come out and support their local in order to guarantee its future. I'd happily go back should we visit the area again.Drew, Scotland

We have recently returned from a holidays in Tollerton. Great place and the perfect village pub. Lovely food, we tried the Sunday lunch and the bar menu which were both excellent. The landlord has recently taken over and is obviously trying to build it up. Looking forward to returning soon.

This is the worse I've ever seen in a jd Wetherspoons nearly every table littered with old dirty plates bar full of glasses to wash and 30 mins wait on food only 2 on bar definitely not recommend

Food was tasty. However the crusted cod ordered by 2 of our party was served with a very meagre amount of tiny pieces of crispy potatoes. It was like 3 chips chopped up. I pointed this out to the girl serving as it was more like a starter. She took it back to the kitchen and quickly returned to say chef was making some more. I had to laugh and I think even the serving girl was embarrassed when she brought me a tiny bowl you’d normally get mayo/ketchup in with another very meagre portion of potato pieces! Also it was meant to be served with creamed leeks and there must have been a leek shortage too! Saying that the other 2 party members had significantly larger portions, a gammon and a sizzler. When the plates were cleared I also informed the guy of the issue with the potatoes served with the cod. He asked the other person if hers was the same and she had said she wasn’t bothered by the small portion, she does not have much appetite and often has a starter instead of main. It’s a shame I came home hungry and I’m not a big eater myself. I’d consider going again but if you’re hungry give the crusted cod a miss! Edit 22/10/24. The owner rang me last week to discuss and apologise. He told me he would be speaking to the manager and would get back to me.

Reserved a table online for a small family reunion. Clearly a popular spot and there were a lot of people milling around outside and drinking outside the pubs on the main street. Service inside was good and there was a good choice of food which was very tasty. Sadly there was a large group of well watered men booked onto the table next to us, in the area by the bar, which completely spoilt the last half of our meal as we simply couldn't hear each other talking. It was a real shame that staff didn't consider putting us in the other part of the restaurant where there were several empty tables all evening, or relocating us for the last part of our meal when it would have been obvious we could no longer converse or hear. .... this would have made all the difference. (It would have been awkward having to ask to be moved ... but care from front of house staff could have carefully relocated us.)
