There are about 8 staff in the cafe, however, the time taken to .prepare drinks that are hot was insufferably long. Staff perfectly nice but pretty much ineffective. Most places make your drink while you wait but they seemed to have a ridiculous wait time, mine was 12 minutes. This meant that my "kept warm in a cabinet" pasty was luke warm at best by the time my coffee was ready, and I had to ask for it to be exchanged for a hot one, adding.to the waiting.time for those behind me in the queue. There was also an issue with dhot drinks served in take away cups for "outsde" although I explained I was sitting in the National trust seating area, I was not allowed a china cup, because they " get left outside". I did point out that there were many customers leaving their crockery and cutlery on tables inside as they left and they were not being.penalised, the staff member explained it was National Trust Policy.....stupid policy!

A gem of a cafe. A bit daunting when busy but mainly because there queuing system is a bit tight. Also, on the day we visited there was a cash only til, this had a much shorter queue and worked well, it would have been helpful to know this before our visit so we'd have taken cash with us! Prices a little higher but not unexpected. Good cup of tea and cheese scone!

We visited the Birling Gap café on a Sunday morning in June to meet up with some friends. The Birling Gap is owned by National Trust, there is a large (pay & display) car park here which gets busy at popular times. The car park is free for National Trust members. The café is located in a fairly large and spacious building sharing it with the National Trust shop and information centre. The cafe has both inside and outside seating and seemed fairly popular but arriving at 10AM when it opened our party of six people were able to find a table with seats so we could all sit together. We were predominantly here for teas, coffees and soft drinks though hot food and snacks were available as well. We returned later in the day to get a drink and found the café very busy with queues for food and drink but this is to be expected at a busy resort area.

Rediculous prices for a cafe! A Cornish pasty was £5.30, sausage roll for £4.70. Seriously what’s that about??? Not enough staff to keep the queue running smoothly, once you’ve paid you wait another 10 minutes before you actually get your hot drinks so there ends up being a huge crowd at the end by the tills. Not a great experience.

You expect a certain kind of experience at a NT cafe- polite staff tasty food. Well we got one of these on our visit last week. The Cornish pasties were average but the chocolate scones and carrot cake were amazing. What was slightly odd is you had to take a number for your cake to be brought to you- well okay we confirmed we weren’t taking away so thought as it was an seasonably sunny day we’d sit outside. The manager came out with our tray slammed it down on the table with a “we don’t serve outside”. What? Are we supposed to guess this? And even if this was true the level of rudeness was unbelievable. I’d previously seen her be rude to the person in front of me in the queue. NT you need to do better!

There's been quite a considerable change since the last time we were here. Then, the cafe was at the other end of the building in an area which now looks like it is being demolished. Unfortunately, the present site is smaller than the former and I would think that, at busy times, it can get rather crowded. However, on the day we went it was relatively quiet so there was plenty of seating available. The food on offer is the usual National Trust range but the helpful staff checked their information so that my wife was able to chose a lunch which did not conflict with her Gluten Free diet. I had a very tasty pasty. In its new situation, there are no longer spectacular views but it's now just a few steps from the cafe to either the shop or the informative Visitor Centre.

Although a delightful location, and great coffee and food, the staff were unfriendly, or even rude, unhelpful and totally spoilt a Christmas get together with family. Although the cafe shuts at 4, chairs were put on tables at 3.30, and drinks were given in paper cups. At 3 minutes to 4 we were told, not asked, to leave . A complete disappointment....and a review from someone who owned a very successful cafe and knew the importance of customer care. Come on NT, sort it out!

Ordered a coffee and chai with two cakes. It seemed to take ages although they were busy. When the order arrived one cake was missing and we had to reorder. The person we first mentioned this omission to simply disappeared. Had to also go back to the counter for milk in my coffee. Good job for the National Trust there’s no competition.

Came in for coffee and a bit of shelter from a sudden downpour. Having been charged £13 for 3 drinks, and waited some while to collect them, we looked around in vain for a table. Upon asking we were told quite dismissively that the cafe was closed and we would have to take out the drinks (into the pouring rain)- at which point people’s orders were still being taken. Apparently we should have known the “closing” time by studying the website beforehand… People were still being admitted whilst one harassed staff member was trying to point out that the entrances that were clogging up were indeed emergency escape exits. Overpriced beverages and staff with all the charm of a verrucca.

Well, it was good that you ordered at the cashier, and they deliver the cooking spoon numbers if you find a vacant table. But it was extremely crowded, and they tried to clear and clean the tables as quickly as possible. The food is the typical food you get at every sight of the National Trust. I tried a Cornish Pasty. It was ok. Just avoid seeing the toilets. Long queues inside or outside and no matter if you are male or female. No matter if you need to see a urinal only or a cabin.

I came here with my family after a walk as we fancied a coffee and a bite to eat. We were really disappointed in the sausage rolls we bought - they were definitely not fresh as the pastry was hard and stale and the sausage was all dried up. there used to be a wonderful cafe and restaurant at birling gap that was a great place to spend time in an attractive location enjoying good food. since NT took over it has become a soulless expensive equivalent of a british motorway services where you get chewed up and spat out the other end. this is a shame because the soup that was served was very tasty but it came in a tiny cardboard tube with some mother's pride slices stuffed in a polythene bag. the place has less atmosphere than works canteen. i visited on a windy day which meant that the public weren't allowed to sit by the windows which severely restricted the seating. even a table that side of the room by a wall was forbidden so we had to wander about with our tray of food with nowhere to perch. there was some comic relief as some workers attempted to attach protection to the windows in a gale - something best done in advance - which added to the impression of lack of effective management. walk the extra mile to east dean to the tigers inn or the hiker's cafe on the green.

Situated right on the edge of Birling Gap, the cafe can get quite busy when everyone drops in for a drink at virtually the same time and there may be a slight delay while the drinks are prepared. That being said, it is a good place for a drink and/or a snack before, or after, having a walk round the Seven Sisters Country Park. The staff are cheerful and helpful, the coffee is good and the cakes are delicious. There is parking right outside (free to NT members) and this extremely good cafe is wheelchair accessible. Visiting Birling Gap today was a good time to visit - the weather was beautiful and we snacked on a takeaway from the Cafe. Covid19 precautions were very strict with an orderly socially distanced queue outside with limited access inside. At 14:00 hours there was very little in respect of perishable consumables left with another 2 hours of business to go. Service was very good although, as a National Trust business, it would have been good to see a Manager in place as the organisation seemed a little bit vague. That being said, the cheese with onion marmalade sandwich and the cheese and onion pasty was very good as was the coffee. More available tables outside would be really great. As a footnote - the toilets in the carpark were not very pleasant, although not the responsibility of the Cafe.

£5.00 to park, albeit all day rate, makes it unfeasible if stopping for a quick tea and cake.... Extremely covid safe, aside from same entry/exit point, however not balanced well with the overly long wait for a simple coffee and sandwich. At one point, a sole café assistant taking orders/payment and making the hot drinks, making whole process way too slow. I had a full stamped loyalty card from pre-covid days which no longer accepted. Understandably some places have stopped use of these loyalty cards over the covid period. Told new scheme will be introduced. Quick look around the shop, but when answered "yes we are just browsing", an overly attentive assistant twice proceeded to give explanations on products we were commenting on privately - obviously a sale wanted, but this was imposing, and not appreciated. Otherwise good sandwich and coffee, at as to be expected prices.

Called the cafe a week before me and my mate did the seven sisters walk to check they were open and to get a sense of the offer. Chap on the phone was helpful. We were relieved to arrive at the cafe after around three hours of walking from Seaford. Couple of very friendly ladies on the door to the cafe making sure C-19 safety was the first item on the menu. Think the cafe is doing a reduced menu to reflect the times and had hot / cold sausage roll, Cornish pasty, veg curry, soup as well as other items I don’t recall as me and my mate both decided we’d split a SR and have a CP each. Couple of canny good coffees completed the order. The SR and CPs were really decent - defo a step above your high street offer - and we wolfed them down. Coffees good. We used the toilet facilities and were on our way. Place has parking, loads of outdoor seating and is right on the coastal cliffs so the views will stun.

Beautiful cafe, stunning location, breathtaking place to visit and connect with outstanding nature at any time.. Ruined by one persons poor attitude and ignorance.. we arrived to National Trust cafe in Birley Gap at 15:51, having completed Seven Sisters hike, fully aware the cafe shuts at 4pm.I do understand businesses can refuse service to customers who come in just before closing time but we arrived, as per photos below, nine minute before cut off, there was one couple in front of us and two customers inside the cafe.David, the facilities manager said the cafe is closing and there is no point joining the queue, we politely said we would purchase water, sandwich and cups of tea and we would be able to receive our order before 4pm as the queue was now literally non existing and it was 15:54 at this point.David rather unkindly and with air of incredible arrogance explained that he is the facilities manager and it is down to his decision and discretion. By refusing us much needed hot beverage, with no explanation, no apology and not being customer friendly at all, David left a very poor impression.. I have been NT member for years, we have never experienced this level of rudeness, we felt dismissed..

Literally don’t bother. I didn’t expect fine dining ( it’s a cafe). I expected more than this though. Two pasties (£3.75 each), two coffees and my £1.50 parking for an hour cost me £15.00. The pasties are in a “hot cabinet.” This needs renaming the “Luke warm tasteless dry cabinet.” Disinterested staff checking their “socials” on mobiles and my gilt edged pasties came with naff paper plates. They didn’t even bother telling me that real cutlery was available, rather than the plastic rubbish I had picked up. ( Really National Trust ? Hardly ‘green’). Absolutely abysmal.. After asking again we were told to say what we wanted and they would ask the kitchen if it was ok which in fact it was! What a way to run a National Trust cafe, so rigid and inflexible, it’s amazing they have any customers. We are from the UK but they get a lot of Japanese tourists and if you have limited knowledge of English you stand no chance. Very poor, it needs an overhaul and lessons in service and customer care.

I'm sorry to say we won't come back!We had walked from East Dean and we were in definite need of sustenance. The cafe offered us a cosy buzzing atmosphere. Seating was at a premium and so too was our first and second choice on the menu. No soup...no paninis...so we settled for a bacon bap and a cup of tea. The electronic beeping device we were given to signal that our food was ready was faulty and gave up flashing. The tea pot didn't offer up anywhere near enough for two cups of tea. The bacon bap was two pieces of bread, a flora sachet and two rather dry looking rashers of bacon. And we paid £12 for that small 'pleasure' - no explanation, no apology that they had run out of what looked quite tasty dishes if we had only hurried up a bit and got there before 1pm. I'm sorry but my view is that the business is playing on the beautiful location, the fact there is no competition.

We visited relatively late in the afternoon so understandably the choice was limited but we were able to find a sandwich and scone to our liking. We were offered extra water with the tea which was a welcome bonus.

Birling Gap is a National Trust destination which means Pay & Display car park (expensive), unless you are a NT member (scan your members card for a free ticket).

We popped in her on our south downs way walk for some lunch, they did not have anything vegan except crisps, although they do give a discount if you use your own coffee mug. A lovely spot to sit especially if it is sunny although it can be very busy.

I'm not sure if the cafe staff are volunteers or paid. But whatever the arrangements, someone really needs to get a grip on the art of catering here, because even at quiet times, there seems to be little co-ordination or visible organisation. This cafe must be a nightmare at busy times, as it is barely capable of serving just a few customers on quiet weekdays.

Visited at quite a busy time but there was no problem about getting scones and tea. Scones seemed to be homemade and there was plenty of butter, jam and cream. However the teapot was rather small for two people and there was no extra milk or water offered at the counter, though to be fair we didn't ask either.

All i can say about this place is avoid unless you want to burn a hole in your pocket. I paid around £3 pounds for a bottle an unknown brand of bottled water.

Good drinks, a decent range of food and cakes available. Friendly, clean and well-maintained. Unexpectedly caters for take away, offering suitable boxes and bags.

A lovely venue, come here annually. Biggest change is how much closer the edge of the cliff has become. They estimate 70cms annually. Ah the new NT ticketing is a bit of a hit or miss. Put your card under the reader & play the game; but be patient until the ticket prints - good idea but scanner needs adjusting. This year was very windy (we were there just before the toxic fumes debacle) The cafe is lovely, the staff are very friendly but not drilled in efficiency - but it seems the two till system & counter set-up are counter productive. Drinks great. Food good enough. Seating, no problem at all - if there is enough for you to get one! Outside seating gives a fabulous view but the wind can be tricky - especially with children. All in all a lovely place & we will continue to visit.

WOW what an amazing spot. NT is just the best organization around and what wonderful work you do with every single national gem you undertake your belt. Birling Gap is a magnificent location for walker, explorer and chilaxers like me :-). We walked, explored the rock pools with the kids, enjoyed the waves, walked on the bluffs and enjoyed a picnic on the pebbly beach. Cafe was lovely too. We had nice warm paninis and cream teas. All tasted wonderful! This was first time and will be going back again and again. Oh and the views are amazing...

We went here over half way through a walk from Seaford to Eastbourne and hoped to get a sandwich. We arrived around 3pm and there was hardly any food left. We managed to get the last two 'packaged' cream teas which were fine, but the scones would have probably acted better as a door stop. All the sandwiches had gone. They seem to missing a trick for a busy school holiday day. There were plenty of staff who were very good at clearing and cleaning tables, the decor was very nice and comfortable too. The toilets left a lot to be desired though. We won't be hurrying back, it's just convenient for a break,

Used the cafe twice during our trip to Birling Gap and I would be happy to go there again. The scones in our cream teas were great but the hot chocolates we had later were disappointing for £2.50 each so would give them a miss.

Stopped here on the Seven Sisters walk for a cuppa and cake. All very tasty, decent size too so would be handy if you had a large group. Ice cream van outside and large car park. Great views across the coast.

I have already reviewed this in the main hotel site. The drawing rooms are lovely, comfortable chairs, beautiful view, BUT the food and wine by the glass were truly awful. Very poor quality and very expensive. Never again.

We moved to Pevensey recently and The Red Lion is our new “local”. It’s warm and inviting, the staff are lovely and the food is always brilliant, portion sizes are good and quality of food is on point. Prosecco deals would be amazing as it does put us off slightly the price of a bottle compared to Tesco next door but if you want a night out then it is what it is! We are regulars and enjoy our time here. Music on a Friday/Saturday night would be great instead of Sundays but that’s just us im sure others like it on a Sunday.

This country pub had been on our list for ages and so as it was my birthday weekend we booked for Sunday lunch. We'd checked the menu before booking so we knew the roast was pricey at £24 for the roast beef. We usually pay between £16 and £20 elsewhere. Unfortunately, when it arrived it was disappointing. There was plenty of thinly sliced beef but I found it very fatty and chewy. There were fewer vegetables than expected, half a carrot, 3 very small, very hard roast potatoes and a pile of kale. The Yorkshire pud was large but mainly soggy. The gravy was delicious. Also elements of the dish were less warm than others. The pub is lovely and had a good drinks menu but we were seated in the bar area and had to listen to staff discussing their rotas at length. Perhaps if we'd been in the main restaurant area or outside we'd have had a better experience. Maybe consider your portion sizes especially the veg. We didn't stay for desert.
