I couldn’t believe the price for a sausage roll nothing special not even a large one £1.30 can’t see any reason for this high price

Staff pleasant, hygiene standards not good.. Surrey should be wearing gloves when handling food instead of bare hands! Also serving on till whilst touching food. Food is nice but not much of a variety..

all the cakes and pastries are really fresh . The staff are friendly and knowledgeable .The pastries and pies are well filled and the pork pies delicious. The produce ie ham ,corned beef , sausage s etc are a bit pricey but worth it . Wide variety of breads and rolls

i dont use the tea room too often but it provides everything it should. what you need to knwo about are the cakes!! i dont live in the area but the cakes Birds sell in all their branches are the best in the country! i travel hundreds of miles for these - or put in orders with family and friends the only criticism i have with the tea room is there is always a queue when i go!! so that speaks volumes.

Went to Birds cafe yesterday lunchtime as I so often have done over the last 40 years. Walking through the downstairs double doors my eyes and brain did a little 'loop the loop' short circuit and I went dizzy and my knees buckled. I looked around at the faces of customers and staff for help in making sense of the altered reality in front of me, my head and eyes went back and forth from stairs to staff I stepped back out of the door, I waited a second before re-entering, hoping that there had been a glitch in the fabric of time or my poor fractured mind was tricking me. I guess to the staff and punters that I must have looked like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, clicking her heals and snapping her eyes open and shut praying for normality to be restored as I exclaimed WHAT!! UH? WHAT? WHERE? WHEN???? But alas dear reader, this was not to be. The staircase had gone; been airbrushed from history (as you can see from my picture, which miraculously isn't blurred, as my hands were shaking like a cold forlorn cake pilgrim). None of the staff spoke about the desecration, despite me standing there for a good 12 minutes shaking my head and rubbing my eyes as I held on to the small bun rack for stability, looking at the space where the stairway once stood. I don't know if they were too embarrassed to say anything or if they too were traumatised and been instructed to deny it ever existed? The cafe is now inaccessible even to staff, builders and property surveyors. It has been sealed up and no one is allowed in. But everything has been left exactly as it was on that fateful morning that the stairs were removed last week. It is a time capsule for future generations who want to study an authentic 1970's cafe. Archeologists and social historians will visit in the future and marvel at the quirky art on the walls (who can forget crying child with big eyes and lit candle?),and look at the badly positioned glass cake stand that was very rarely used. They will reverently turn over the brown sauce packets and look at the use by date. The National Trust will analyse the floral wallpaper, the clashing patterned carpet and become excited. I also guess they will look at the very recently installed card reader and surmise that this was a last failed attempt to bring the cafe into the 21st Century - or will they view that as a symbol of the futility and folly of technology interfacing with a cafe so deeply frozen in time as Birds, and that the card reader ultimately brought about it's downfall? So, readers, mourn with me and recall happier times. Gone but not forgotten. EDIT -One final word - Upon completing this written section of the review, I scrolled down to the section that requires specific answers to a set of questions , one of them is.. "Does this restaurant have waiters and waitresses?" ... I was taken by surprise at the volume of my weeping during contemplation of this question, my wife came running to see what the matter was ! Even my 3 years studying philosophy didn't prepare me for this question. Where is Jean Paul Sartre when you need him most ; what would the ancient Geeks have said to such conundrum? (that there is a perfect example of this cafe still in existence in the realm of forms ? Would Bishop Berkely have said that they still exist because God still held them in his mind despite the fact that we close our eyes to their existence? If ever there was an Existential question then this is it? Fun fact - no male has ever worked in Birds in 47 years. What is the meaning of this? It NEVER ever had a waiter.

I have been going into Birds since I was a kid and have always found it a relaxing place to eat. They also did the catering for my Dads 80th which was great success. Recently they changed the menu which I found disappointing and didn't go so much. The bacon egg and chips was lovely which they stopped doing. I lover the fact that it hasn't changed much since it has been open which is part of its charm. and you can watch the world go by from the window. Was really gutted to find out the cafe' is now closing. Can't you change your mind and get Mary Queen of shops to help give it a new lease of life instead of relocating?

Birds has always been a good place for lunch if you don't want fancy food, cakes as every one in the area around here can tell you are fantastic as is all there food in the shop. The trouble with the place is it has not moved with the times in any shape or form, it needs a revamp urgently, also for anyone who cannot clime stairs there is no other way to get up to the restaurant.

We have eaten here several times when shopping. The service is always good and there is a basic choice of food and cakes. Ideal when looking for something light to eat

Brought my bread and cakes which i like and the offer of a free tea or coffe was in the offering. Ok, upstairs to get my drink and decided to have dinner at the same time. Friendly staff and an air of relaxation. Peaceful and if by a window watch the world go buy-bliss. Worth a visit, as a similar venue (not Birds) in Dunoon, Scotland was utter rubbish and that was for tourists.

Be shocked if it makes another year!

It is thirty years since we were last in this cafe- reassuring that same quality of cakes, same quality of service, and clearly much loved still by the locals. On the day we visited the queue was outside the door for the cakes. Spacious lay out of tables, never feel squashed up. Recommended.

Don't expect a huge choice. The menu has been pretty much the same since 1976, but that is why we love it.

Called in one lunchtime with my daughter who fancied soup and bread roll. Soup of the day advertised and when asked what this was, given a choice of 4 soups - chicken, mushroom, tomato or vegetable. Should have realised then it wasn't homemade soup but out of a tin The only redeeming feature was the lovely bread roll.

Always faultless food, glad they take cards now. Everything they sell is fresh and very reasonably priced. A nice old school local business, well done.

I often go here when I'm in the area, the food is excellent, and they always have specials on which are great value. The restaurant is a little dated, but it is always clean. The staff do seem to get a little confused with orders sometimes, but the are always very friendly.

As I am often in the town centre at lunchtime I find myself popping into Birds for lunch as it is very convenient. Time after time I peruse the menu and come to the conclusion that as the all day breakfast is only slightly more expensive than anything else on the menu I will have that. And guess what, time after time the breakfast ( eggs, bacon and sausage ) are overcooked. When will I learn ?

Birds are renowned for their bread rolls, cakes, potted beef. Brilliant. They also have their cafe upstairs above the shop. A large area, a good range of cakes, snacks, sandwiches at a good price. Good friendly staff, service.

Bird's is one of those cafes that you 'discover'. It is situated at the top of a fairly steep staircase above Bird's confectionery shop in Burton High Street.

Good service with nice decor and friendly staff. Good choice on menu hot and cold and I had a window shop in the cake area. Had Welsh Rarebit and Eggs Benedict and delicious. One poached egg slightly hard but as a person who doesn't make them as know it is hard to time consistency still good.

Went to this place for my daughters 5th birthday dinner. Staff decorated the area so well and left quiet alot of thing on the table like goddy bags balloons etc. Service was spot on from all the staff including the sweet girl who served us. 100% recommending and coming back. Just call and tell them I'm advance about the occasion and they go above and beyond to make it special xxx

Best burger and loaded fries in Burton. The service from the lady working on Wednesday is awesome. She has a great smile, is welcoming and friendly. She deserves a pay rise.

We were so looking forward to our breakfast and then unbeknown to us, the restaurant was inundated with dogs. It is not made clear on the website that this is a dog friendly restaurant or I would not have booked as one of us is allergic to dog hair. Such a shame. The dog area should be separate. Not the dining experience we all want to share. Never got to taste my eggs benedict. 😔
