Big fish takeaway in South Derbyshire

I was absolutely appalled with the service me and my mother received ay the big fish Newhall. The staff were very rude, unprofessional and made you feel very unwelcome. No service with a smile at all. The woman who served us couldn’t be more sour faced if she tried. To top it all off I asked for chips and curry sauce… instead I got chips and gravy. Would not recommend.

We have been going the Big Fish for years most weeks for chips and curry sauce, however the last 2 months, the quality of food has really gone down, the chips are oily and cold, the curry sauce has changed, I'm not sure if it's had a change of owner or staff or supplier? but tonight was the last time, we will be finding another chip shop, such a shame as it was a great chippy.

We ordered approximately 50 meals to be delivered. All were excellent, on time, good value and such good service. Would recommend.

I'm not one to rant however, today i ordered from the Golden Fish in Newhall today and the chips were like concrete, they were cold, the sausages were like eating a pot of pepper, the delivery driver didn't attempt to ring the door bell and just left our food outside in the cold.. natrually we rang up to talk to someone that was in charge, to be told that we are lying, and all were are trying to do is complain to get free food and our money back... the customer service was disgusting and they put the phone down... my dad then went down with his plate or food to show that we were not lying and to see if there was something that could be done.... the manager then got the police on my father and said he was being violent and aggressive which is far from the truth. I truly am gobsmacked with the way that this has been dealt with. Avoid the Golden Fish in newhall completely. There was no attempt to offer to re-cook the food, a refund or any type or apology that was given. Absolutely disgusting.

I visited some friends in Swadlincote and wanted to try out the local ‘chippy’ and visited here. The restaurant looked promising with a huge selection of food and a big array of hot counters. Having ordered cod, it was cooked fresh (very impressed) alongside chips and sides. The food was reasonably priced but didn’t burst with flavour. The batter on the fish was a little over cooked and the chips, curry sauce and mushy peas were a little plain too. I would give this takeaway a second chance though as thought cooking my fish order ‘fresh’ was a brilliant touch.

The staff are extremely rude and swear behind the counter. I left without ordering and food which is massively overpriced. Awful service. Never ever again.

The Big Fish have fed us key workers in these troubling times. We had a phone call at 9.30 asking for our order at Newhall Post Office this morning. It brought tears to my eye's that thankfully people are finally appreciative of each other. I know we are not NHS but I've heard what else you have done for the community so bloody well done!!! Keep going you two and team you are stars x AYE UP DUCK!!!!

Saturday tea time ( prime time ) cold dry fish n chips wasn’t what I wanted, I’m local but will definitely not be back.

Good value for money and they have done the seating better than they first had it. Lot more spacious.

the staff are slow and rude here and dont know how to listen to your order . Then theres the food edible but nothing speciel to greasy and very small portions for what you pay . Will not use again !

Food was fantastic however the same cannot be said for the service of 1 person the girl who served myself and my partner I believe her name was Tanya was rude to both customers and other staff members, how anyone can work with such a rude and obnoxious girl is beyond me. The owner needs to get that sorted out as it’s drfinately letting the place down. Service is everything in a place like that.

Not the best in town and you pay more for the food here. Staff are not friendly and can be rude. With other offers in town such as andys in Gresley I wouldn’t bother.

We go to this chip shop quite a lot. We've been going since it first opened with its original owners.The people there are always very pleasant (except for one blonde girl who is very rude, abrupt and unhelpful - always tries to guess our order and gets it wrong instead of just listening)But all the other employees are very nice and helpful!It has recently gone downhill in my opinion, chips seem to be slightly pale and undercooked.We used to love the burgers but they no longer seem to cook the chicken to order for them and there is now never enough salad, you get like 3 pieces of lettuce, huge chunks of onion and tomato and it's not great.Spring rolls are really nice except every now and again they seem to deep fry it in batter, which confused me and ruined it for me.Pies and fish are really nice!Portion sizes are getting smaller but are still pretty good!Battered sausages are great!Peas and gravy are great!We've started going less due to the quality going down but it will still be our favourite Chip Shop in the area!

Great food but one staff in particular has a terrible attitude, I've even heard her swearing so don't go in anymore !!

We go here regularly and wouldn't choose any other chip shop in the area. Mini fish meal for £4.90 very good value, always fresh and tasty and staff are always happy. Never a really long wait even if it's busy.

We go to this take away every month, it is the only chip shop in the area we will use, and we have used it since it opened a few years ago. It has a wide variety on the menu and we actually share a meal because it is large. We have the chicken and I have always found it to be tasty, it is good value for money at £4.50 for chicken tikka and chips, which as I say we find too large for one so we share it. Even when it is busy the quality of the food doesn't drop and the owners make sure the food is well cooked and the staff are pleasant when serving. The shop is always clean and that gives you confidence in the food. The chips are never greasy, because I can't think of anything worse - the fish is huge but very tasty. I have never had a bad meal from here, and can understand why at times people are standing out the door waiting to get in. There is car parking available. If you want a good choice and quality food then this is one of two take away fish and chip shops I would recommend and there are a few round swadlincote and the surrounding villages!

There are a few chip shops close to where I live however I would not visit any other besides this one. For me it's the best quality and a firm favourite. Never disappointed.

Nearly always use the Big Fish always good quality and excellent service,always a high turnover of food so you feel like you are getting somerhing freshly cooked as opposed to sitting under a heat lamp for 2 hours,will deffo visit again soon.

I go once or twice with my mate for lunch. we both have SF chicken breast and chips. although the chips can be a bit dry at times, which is normal for any chippy, but the sfc is always nice. The service their is incredible. they are always smiling. Defiantly recommend to any one.

I frequented this chip shop once a week, on a Tuesday or Wednesday as it was quality over quantity. However, recently it has been taken over and the standards have slipped. It was always consistent and now I don't dare go again as I find myself binning most of it. Orders are most likely wrong when brought home and the fish is bland and tasteless, never mind the fact I ask for cod and they give me haddock. It's a shame that a great chip shop is no more as I am exhausting the list of chip shops in the area.

Visited on a Saturday evening, the young lady that served me was very pleasant and the staff all greeted me on my entrance. Food was delicious, my husband loves the Donermeat and the chip portion was perfect for the 3 of us. Always my regular when we fancy a chippy tea. We all said how much we enjoyed it so that's the reason for my review 5**

This is our chippy of choice, well worth the 2 mile drive. Service did drop a little after change of management but now back on track, huge portions.

We ordered food from here only to get home to find the fish was dry tasteless and the batter was rock hard,the chips again dry and tasteless these must have been reheated from lunch time.The kebab wrap had an extra item in it that being a long hair which did not belong to any members of the family.needless to say we will not be returning to big fish.

Tonights tea was very disappointing for all of us, it seems to have gone down hill a lot since my last visit which is a shame as I thought this was the best in the area, I am now starting to reconsider this. For a start we had ordered two fish for myself and my Dad and both were hard all the way through like they had been sat there for a very long time so it was not pleasant to eat!! More shockingly my mum had a kebab wrap and she found a long hair! Surely hairnets should be worn due to hygenie this resulted in her leaving the rest. Last time I would have recommeded this place,however after tonights expereince I don't think I will be returining. Also compared to other loacal places in the area you are not greeted with a friendly smile, it seems like the staff behind the counter tonight didn't want to be there, a smile doesn't cost anything.

Wow- passing through the village....well worth a stop at The Big Fish. The fish was fresh aand perfectly cooked and the chips were delicious! Great menu and great value! Highly recommended.

We always visit this chippy every Friday when i've finished work. Well worth the travel for the best fish in the area.

Since Dave left the place has gone down hill no long ques anymore on a Friday and sat evening quality not the same the staff are more miserable now than when Dave was running it a friendly smile doesn't cost anything all you get are long faces behind the counter I can see why previous customers are going elsewhwhere I will be going back to Andys chip shop at church gresley from now on at least you are welcomed with a lovely smile from the two young girls serving behind the counter

Friends suggested this traditional fish 'n' chip shop in deepest Non-Peak District Derbyshire and we weren't disappointed. The take away is located in the town / village of Swadlincote. Its a curious town, no railway station, but it does apparently have a ski slope. As we were in the area, we popped in and ordered several large Haddock and Chips along with the usual side dishes and sundries. The staff were very helpful.The fish and chips were served in traditional white paper, the batter was a lovely golden brown and just the right amount of crispness and was a perfect enclosure for the whiteness of the fish. The mushy peas were an emerald green and delicious leaving us wanting more.Various other sundries such as ice-cream and milkshakes were also available. It was also very reassuring to see the assiduous efforts of the staff to keep the shop looking spotless.All in all, highly recommended!

Recently been bought by new owners, all I can say is I'm hugely disappointed. The fish used to be bright white, moist and flakey inside the crispy batter, the best fish in the area. The last two I've had from there have been a dull grey sloppy mush inside. Can't believe how much has changed, didn't know your name, but you were the best chippy owner in history! Now it's just another chippy selling below average food. Gutted.

Huge portion sizes and very reasonable prices. Chips well cooked and fish is always fresh with crispy batter. Won't go anywhere else for fish & chips.

I love my fish and chips, and this place offers the best there is. I've had fish and chips in supposedly some of the best places in the country e.g Rick Steins in Padstow. But this chippy tops the lot and its on my door step. Great food always, friendly and spotlessly clean.

We visit the Big Fish at least once a month. We travel over from Woodville and it's well worth the trip. We think it's by far the best chippy in the area - lovely fish and chips and you get plenty - We buy one large chips and it feeds three of us.The staff are friendly and like others have said it is very popular with locals so be prepared to queue.

The food is excellent. Freshly cooked to order. The portions are very generous. The staff are very pleasant. Very popular so expect a queue, which seems to go the wrong way round to any other place I have been, causing an obstruction to the entrance. That is the only minor I have about this place.

The portions are extremely generous and the price very low. One of the best fish'n chips I ever had. And the service is very quick. I wouldn't go anywhere else for a fish'n chips. Best value for money by far.

not having had take away fish & chips for years because of poor quality we were a little reluctant to do so again. however having sampled big fish we were pleasantly surprised with both the quality of both fish and chips and the quantity you get. we have returned and had the same top quality so will continue using big fish.

First time we've been here and we were not disappointed! Ordered a children's meal for my sister which came with a free slushy of her choice (other drinks were available. My boyfriend and I then had a small chips, small fish, battered sausage and large curry sauce which came to just over £10 which is fairly reasonable. The small chips would easily do at least four people we had loads left. We will definitely return here now as it is much nicer than other local chip shops!!!

Never done a review about this place albeit we have used it quite abit if we fancy take away fish and chips.I cannot recall having a bad meal from here although we do limit what we order to fish and chips, maybe accompanied by peas/beans. Staff always friendly and even when there are queues (which is frequent), this seems to be managed well.So if your at a loss as to where to go for your fish and chips, or you are disappointed with your usual, then I'd recommend you give this a whirl. You won't be disappointed.

Visited this evening for my tea, chips were fresh as always, friendly staff and very welcoming! This is definitely the best chip shop in swadlincote!

If you choose to visit this takeaway then order the fish fingers as you go in and before you start to queue, I promise, you will not regret it. They are amazing! Really big potions of proper fish, not the usual crumbly stuff you get from the supermarket, covered in crunchy breadcrumbs. The price is competitive too.

We had a takeaway fish and chips from here and they were beautiful so fresh and hot won't go anywhere else now x the staff are so welcoming and friendly and are really nice to the children x definitely recommend x

Brilliant service! Very friendly, smiley staff who always have a chat even when they are very hot and busy. The shop is very smart and clean and welcoming. Often full of customers but the staff are very fast so you never have to wait for long. The chips are great but the fish is pure magic! Many other meal choices are available and also ice cream although I doubt you would have room for 'afters'! Just a bit of advice, unless you have a large appetite order a small fish, more than enough with a few chips! Best chip shop in town!

This place is exactly what the name says! The Big Fish! Massive portions with friendly service. The owner is very well respected in the local area for his food. fish and chips from here should be re-named whale and chips! There's also a good selection of other food on offer of the traditional chippy variety. Very clean as well inside. Myself and my wife travel approx 3 miles passing several other chip shops just to get food from here! If you want chip shop food in the Swadlincote area, this is the place to go!

The fish may be big but the batter mix is awful, its always orange and hard on the edges rahter than yellow colour, soft and tasty. maybe its the oil they good in but my husband goes here for his kebab and the chips then to stanton to get the fish. i dont like the chips here either but the rest of the family do and the portion size is really big from big fish. we will continue to use them but get the fish from elsewhere until they start to do a good batter mix that isnt rock hard.

The ladies who I look after send me here numerous times a week and I always have a sneaky dinner myself. The specials on a tray meals are excellent value for money with a small fish (if you can call it that) chips and peas etc £4.50 and more than enough to please for even a bigger appetite. Apparently they have never tasted fish quite like it! I know they wouldn't let me go anywhere else. Delicious food and spotless. I pass alot of chip shops on my way and they sure could do with learning a thing or two from here! Top notch

I have recently moved to the area and my neighbours recommended this fish shop, saying they had followed the owner for years. I do not usually write reviews on trip advisor, but could not resist as the food at this place is amazing. We had fish and two kebabs for my two teenage boys, the kebabs were amazing and brilliant value for money! The fish and chips were also first class, and the best chips we have had in a long time. It's unusual to find a fish and chip shop with such fantastic food, we will definitely be regulars now! The staff were also very friendly, and the place is spotless. Well done big fish!

Firstly this is a 5 star establishment and the utter nonsense iv just read below this review is absurd! The owner/fryer does not wrap up food so the comment about that is a joke! Secondly you have reviewed 5 other establishments in Swadlincote on the same day giving them a disappointed rating.. wow you must have been hungry! The excellent reviews for the big fish say it all. What I don't understand is how trip advisor can allow people to submit fake reviews. Very sad. I think you need to get a life!

Friends raved about it so I had to try it.Well, what friends they turned out to be. The fish was so greasy it surely had been cooked three or four times and not less than two. It was full of grease and looked dark golden brown. YUK.The chips was opposite, Dry and it was like chewing on thick cardboard, my teeth was grinding every time I took a bite.Not to mention I saw the man pick his noise just before he handled the chip paper wrapping my friends food up in...

Was disappointed on last visit. Both of the fish we were served appeared to have been fried twice leaving them with dark,hard batter. The owner wasn't,frying this particular night and this May have had something to do with the poor quality we were served. The shop itself is spotlessly clean

Me and my husband go to big fish every Wednesday for a large cod and large haddock with chips and peas. We have had the same for the last four years and not once have we been disappointed. It amazes us how clean the shop always is and how the food is always spot on week after week. Credit to the chef and staff.

Having seen the reviews on Tripadvisor and elsewhere I sought this place out. It was a tuesday evening and there was no queue to speak of. I ordered a large cod and was told I would have to wait for it to be cooked, which was fine by me as it would be freshly done.When I got home I was a bit concerned when I unwrapped it and noticed the batter was quite dark, suggesting it might be overcooked, which it was. A lovely looking piece of cod was dry and not v nice - such a disappointment. I am sure they do better than this and it seems so from the glowing reviews. It looks like I was unlucky

The Big Fish has taken over the mantle once held by Andys at Church gresley as being the place to go for quality. satisfies the 3 Q's, Quality, Quantity and Quidfriendly, worth travelling for.

I'd heard good things about The Big Fish from locals, and made the trip especially as many of the fish and chips shops local to me are awful. First impressions were that the shop is very clean, the selection was very impressive, and the service was excellent.When it came to the food, the chips were very light and fresh whilst the batter on the cod was also crisp and golden; always a good start. The mushy peas were fairly average in terms of taste and were a bit runny for my liking, but that's down to my personal preference. Sadly, the quality of the fish was a huge letdown. The first mouthful of cod revealed an aroma of ammonia and the taste that followed was most unpleasant. I've experienced this before at another shop, so I didn't eat any more fish and continued with the chips. It is my understanding that this ammonia taste/aroma is due to the fish starting to decompose, so it's not fresh by any means. I desperately wanted to like this place, but I won't return for fish again. Sorry.

Just had the special pie and chips. £4.50 for steak and kidney pie and a SMALL serving of chips in a tray with a splash of curry sauce. I think the tray ought to be larger to accommodate a few more chips. Quality is always very good.

Large portions, great variety and consistently brilliant. Great fish and chips and great friendly staff. If you are in the area and fancy chips, it's a must.

Went based on good reviews and not disappointed. Excellent fish an chips. There are lots of chip shops closer to us but we will be coming here. Other places need to take lessons from this place, the portions are good and the oil is clean. This matters to the customer.

I regularly use this chippy as the food here is amongst the finest fare ever tasted from a humble chip shop. Opens at 9am , breakfast cobs or the whole fry up experience on a tray through to massive portions of chips to go with the decently sized cod/haddock etc. Love the tikka chicken kebabs too! The boss always acknowledges you as you enter and leave. The other staff members are just as friendly. One thing that is noticeable about The Big Fish is how immaculately clean the place is, it looks as good now as the day it opened. Definately recommended if you're in the Swad area.

A Clean, well managed chip shop with generous portions. The batter mixture and cooking oil seem to be changed quite regularly as everything tastes very good.Basically, it's the best fish and chip shop in the area ,and possibly one of the best in Britain.

Good value for money and the cod is the biggest with lovely crispy batter. Thursdays is kebab day which again is very nice.

The only place to get real value for money in Swadlincote, buy regularly from here, sad when it has to be elsewhere when they do not open on certain nights, but they pretty much are open from 9 am most days.

We have food from the big fish at least once a month and it is always spot on. The portions are huge and the quality is superb. I live about a mile from the shop but would happily drive further, the owner should enter the best fish and chip shop competition he would win by a country mile. There always seems to be a queue but that speaks volumes for the place.

The portions here are huge! Of course I am not complaining! I have always had lovely take-aways here, as have many people I know. The fish is always lovely and the chip portions are massive, but proper chips! Really lovely. Definitely recommend! Staff are very friendly as well. Always pleasant.

Just brilliant. Pleasant staff. Clean pleasant looking interior and the best fish and chip for miles. I had heard they were good so had to give them a try and I will be back when my waist line can take it.

The owner clearly puts his reputation before profit. Never will you see a thing out of place..and the food is always top notch with a good variety..even does breakfast. Buy a large portion of fish and chips and feed two people easily!!

I wouldn't go to any other chip shop in the area after trying Big Fish. Portions are huge a small chips easily feeds 2 adults and 2 children.

We are well supplied with first rate chippy's in the Swadlincote area but Big Fish is the best of the lot. Andy's in Church Gresley held the title of the Best in the Midlands and 2nd in the country but the quality has slipped since the owners have handed over to a younger generation. I live practically next door to Andys, but trog off to the Big Fish for mine chip supper. Exceptional quality and great value for money

Popular chippy with long queues, but worth the wait, food is lovely and staff are nice too, has outside seating in the summer, shame about early closing though, children from the local schools go here a lot too

This is by far the best chippy I have ever been to, we usually have kebabs and they are always filled right to the top, with plenty of meat! The chips are superb, as are the staff!!! Would not go anywhere else!
