Melbourne Fish and Chip Shop in South Derbyshire

I had cod, chips and mushy peas. The food was excellent and well cooked as ever. The staff are friendly and I highly recommend this chippy.

Love to come to Melbourne for the lake and old fashioned courtyard near to Melbourne Hall. Use this chippy regularly and it's nice to sit under the bus shelter in the square and watch the world go by. Or, take them down to the lake and enjoy that view instead. Price as good as any chippy. Nice chips and curry sauce.

Husband and I had fish chips peas today. Fish was grey…?cod ?haddock…?who knows!! Skin had not been removed…yuk! Peas were vivid green colour. Chips were tasteless and greasy. Will not return.

We had just arrived back from Tenerife to EMA Tired and hungry we came up with idea of Some chips We knew there was a Chip shop in Melbourne nearby and thought we’d give it a try. Big mistake We ordered 2 Trays of Chips and Peas. The girl serving said £7.40. We thought we’d heard her wrong or she’d made a mistake. We questioned her and were told by Female Proprietor that it was correct. Then she proceeded to inform us about all her overheads. All in all she was very rude. We left shop feeling we’d been robbed. We then stood under shelter opposite and ate them. We both agreed they were bland and tasteless. All I can say is we made a bad decision and would never visit there again.

A great, family-run place serving up fantastic food in big portions with a nice chat as you wait! Really quick service, very clean and tidy. Great menu choice as well so you're never stuck for what to have! Very much recommend!

A two star rating for this tired chip shop is spot on. Lacklustre staff, they charge you a lot, for not a lot because they have a captive local audience. As a family we ordered 2 x cod, peas and chips, a doner kebab and a sausage and chips. The kebab was genuinely pretty good. Fish and chips peas were dreadful, hard chips and you could tell the fish was bought in and of cheap quality small for the money they want.The sausage was cheap, cheap bottom of the range catering junk. Charged well over £20 with a drink on a couple of meals we had. I really don’t mind paying for good quality product and service but honestly this genuinely wasn’t. Not a par by a country mile on other establishments locally. E.G - Zanfish who are excellent. My honest view, we won’t be going again.

While staying in the area we ordered for a large group. All ready on time, hot and absolutely delicious. Would definitely recommend fish and chips from here!

Wonderful gluten-free options and massive portions. What's not to like. If you call in advance, they will have your GF food ready for you.

Had a delicious special fish and chips served in a box ..what a treat totally recommend. The fish was lovely and fresh and chips were cooked to perfection..phoned my order and picked it up..

Beautiful chunky white cod and loads of chips. Kebabs are also tasty and everything is clean and fresh.

Stopped off for take away around 1730 today, Wednesday and was very busy already - good sign. Our cod was cooked fresh and best I’ve had for a very long time if at all. Large chips portion huge and we only needed one between three adults. Friendly service, nice and clean. Excellent. Highly recommended

It costs twice as much as other fish and chips a few miles away. Everything in Melbourne is expensive even the Sainsbury put price up for most items compared to other Sainsburys

Ok chips a little dry good job we had ketchup! Awful backtaste! Staff ok, a little offish, clean, won't be going back!

Thought we’d try here as a change from our normal chippy,what a mistake that turned out to be.The chips were bland,the fish was awful with no taste whatsoever,very greasy and virtually inedible.The worst fish and chips we’ve had in a long time.Avoid at all costs!

Just fetched fish and chips for our tea. The worst worth in the bin. Will not be using them again. Chips bland and greasy. Fish brown and may have been warmed up.

This place is near work and I occasionally nip in on my way home. The chicken kebabs are great with fresh salad. Service is always good and prices reasonable.

Lovely fish and chips. The food is always piping hot and freshly cooked. This is a family run business and they have lived in the village for years. They are very hard working, polite and friendly. The hygiene rating is 5* which is exactly what they deserve.

Not sure what to say as it's all in the title. Great fish and chips and good portions too. Nice to have a takeout portion and eat them in the fresh air at the marketplace meeting shelter!

Always enjoy going to see Theo, chris and the gang, get to practice my Cypriot , always a warm welcome and always a quality bag of chips, sometimes with pie, sometimes chicken and the missus loves the fish, a must if you fancy a bag of England's favourite

We have no takeaway in our village. Have two excellent 'chippies' both around 3 miles away and have happily used both. One night though was passing through Melbourne on the way home and decided to give this place 'a go'!

Dropped into Melbourne chip shop recently and tried the doner meat, salad and chips special with a drink.....very nice food...much better than my last visit here, and extremely good value! Give them a try!

Theo & Chris have served us well for over 20 years. Good honest food. Lunchtime specials are reasonably priced and freshly cooked. The place is absolutely spotless.Well done you two.

Had chips & peas in a tray and the serving was massive! Great service too! Peas didn't half give me wind though....

Decidimos hacer un viaje a Melbourne y conseguir pescado y patatas fritas y sentarse junto al lago. Los dos estábamos muy decepcionados. Patatas fritas muy caliente, pasada y grasienta. El pescado era mejor no me temo. Rematar fue el servicio al cliente muy pobre. No por favor o gracias!

I had previously written a glowing review for this chipshop based on the first ever visit in february this year.sorry to have to tell you that we went 3 weeks later at a teatime,around 6ish and ordered a cod and chips.we sat in the car with our vinegar/salt/sauce etc in absolute anticipation.WOW..what was this pile of soggy greasy slop in front of us.we bravely tried to find something,anything remotely redeeming to say about it all but im afraid there wasn't anything glorious,nice or appetising at all about it.the chips looked like overstuffed dying white flabby slugs,the cod was more dead washed up whale with rock hard batter one end and slimy soggy batter the other end.The only saving grace about this massive disappointment was that thank COD we only ordered the 1 fish.nasty,cheap lazy cooking.keep up this kind of food and i gaurantee they won't be in business by the end of the year.time to get your "skates"on,pull up your "sock"eyes,and i'll "haddock"a guess you will do much "batter"in the future.sorry to everyone who read our first review and tried this "plaice"thinking they were in for a treat.hope the owner takes note and tries harder..

Pescado y patatas fritas se consideran una institución y esperamos que la mayor calidad de ellos. Como local he probado la comida de aquí en más de una ocasión y han notado una clara caída en calidad.

Awful, I was running late so thought I would grab some tea from the chippy, what a mistake, it was 8.30pm and I ordered 2 x sausage +chips and chicken kebab meat with chips. The kebab meat was ok but the sausages were like pieces of wood absolutely solid and the chips were pretty dreadful too, very dry and over cooked. I will definitely never go here again, will stick to the chippy in Alvaston.

Very tasty chips . Pleased the whole family with no complaints. We had a mix of chips , fish , sausage, peas , curry and we all enjoyed every bit of it . We will definitely return if we are in the area again .

We discovered this chip shop having moved into Breedon last year. We have had a take away many times and have never been disappointed. Fish & Chips or Kebab always great quality and empty plates all round. Would recommend highly

We were out for a drive away from normanton rd where we live and all the kebab shops and saw this little chippy as we went thru melbourne.i got us a cod and chips.we were firstly amazed at the goldness and chunkiness of the beautiful chips,not greasy at all.then the huge golden battered cod.the flesh was thick meaty and pure white.the taste was beyond any cod you would find in derby.these were the best cod and chips we have tasted in the last 20 years and we've tried everywhere truly in our quest as believe me there is NO COD in NORMANTON..delicious and well worth every penny.we're taking salt & vinegar with us next time...and thats on saturday..

If you want the best fish and chips in the east Midlands this is the place to call into, you can guarantee quality fish and chips, batter crispy and not to greasy, fish pure white and fresh and chips to die for, proper fish and chips.. this chippie is why fish and chips are still a nations favourite takeaway. Longstanding fish and chip shop in the heart of the town, serving all the traditional favourites. Good portion sizes and great tasting at reasonabke prices. What more vould you ask for?

Staff very helpful in this local fish bar - they do gluten free fish and chips, most evenings, I think. The portions are generous and the place looks clean. Recommended.

We popped into Melbourne whilst stating at the John Thompson and came across the little gem. We knew it must be good because there was a large queue waiting for food. The ladies serves everyone quite quickly and it was well worth the wait. Just watch out if you have a small appetite though because you get a good portion.Only downside it the parking can be tricky.

This always a friendly and local place to purchase fresh F&C's. If in Melbourne you can't go wrong this place, but watch the early closings at a weekend.

Great for those that are hungry as they have generous serving sizes and the servings are very well wrapped for taking away so good service. Piece of cod or haddock 4.80 with the small chip serve big enough for me combined with salt and vinegar.

Best fish that I have ever eaten from a chip shop, even when you ask for a mini size you get a huge portion, also with the chips, they do curry sauce, mushy peas and other side dishes.They also do gluten free fish and chips.

We often pop in to this chippy for a take away & after visiting for over eight years would always recommend it.The portion of chips is more than enough for one & you could probably share between two..the fish is always freshly cooked & they do a fish and chip special for a reasonable price if you ask for it.The staff are always friendly & everything is very clean..top chippy..if you are in or around Melbourne try it.

The fish was fresh and beautifully cooked with crispy batter. The chips were not the skinny type you in some establishments get but a good size and very tasty. Very filling meal and we will be back.

Stopped off for fish and chips after visiting Calke Abbey. Wow, the best fish and chips I have had in a long time. The fish was cooked to perfection.

I phoned them in advance and ordered my fish & chips these were ready as I arrived 10 minuets later, the portions are large and a large chips is enough for three, however the fish was fresh the batter crisp the chips were nice and portioned large, what else could you need.

Really good chips! There's not much more to say about it, but I would definitely make a detour to get these chips. Almost as good as Whitby chips and that's high praise from me! Very reasonable prices, friendly staff and really good chips (did I say that already?)

Absolutely the best fish and chips around.. And the service by the counter staff was second to none.. I commented in the cheeriness of both young peopl serving on the evening I visited. Politeness with impeccable manners!. Not often found everywhere these days. The fish chips and peas however needed no dressing up! They were divine!! Well worth a visit.

Treated myself to a fish and chip supper on a summers evening. The fish and chips were really good, especially as I took them to eat whilst sitting on a bench overlooking the nearby pool. Someone else had the same idea! Noticed they also have gluten free batter...only the second time I've seen this. Brilliant.

With having coeliac disease there are not many places i can eat out and have 'normal' food with everyone else. If you give them a ring and order it you will save a ten minute wait as it is all cooked to order. The fish and chips are fantastic and a real treat!

In an emergency the Melbourne chippy came tops. A bad experience at an Indian Restaurant along the way left us hungry and grumpy. As soon as we entered the chippy, our grumpiness evaporated in to nothing, as the staff were really good fun and so cheerful! The conversation really lifted us up, and the food was delicious. Fish and chips taste wonderful like they did when I was a kid. Good price and friendly staff. Has almost become a Saturday even ritual now driving over to Melbourne .

Once a again a very fast service and the fish was cooked well. Batter not to moist and chips were lovely. Service had a smile and cost was good.

This is a small but very clean and efficient little chippie in a lovely village which it does proud producing good quality fish and chips and everything else. Well done.

visited this chippie at 12 20pm today and our fish and chips had been reheated but the peas were hot! didn.t return them as we were on our way home . Shall not be returning !

Best fish & Chips we've had in eons. Surprised to find out the owners previously owned a F&C shop in our home town. Very reasonably priced, batter crispy and non greasy. Chips were to die for.

Can't fault it. The food is good with plenty of choice and the staff are pleasant & helpful. There is also the option of gluten free menu.

The chips were really good and the fish was fresh and tasty, the was plenty of choice and you can sit and eat them in the little square across the road as fish and chips are so much better open to eat there and then, rather than wrapped

It is difficult to find fish & chip shops selling gluten free products .Look no further. Always available not just on certain days.
