Just got back after a couple of cheeky pints in the bar area. Had a nice porknpie but would have been better with a metal knife and fork, rather than a wooden fork. Definitely recommend.

Nice pub a relaxed feel with a good range of beers and wine, period features with a modern twist. We call especially 2 or three times a year when we are in the area. Our 1st Saturday night pint and the place is full of friendly locals, Great Pub! If you call in try the Leiffe on draught it's wonderful. A bowl of warm Sahara peanuts is a great compliment to the beer.

We were staying overnight nearby and booked to eat here as the menu sounded amazing. On arrival I was dismayed to find that it was curry night (hubby was delighted!) There was nothing whatsoever on the website to say that it was only curries served on a tuesday evening and had there been then I would not have booked as I don't like curries. My husband ordered the mutton curry which he absolutely loved and I ordered the mildest one they had and asked for natural yoghurt so that I could try and eat it (I don't do spices I'm afraid). The young man serving us was very pleasant and he agreed with us that it should be on the website to make people aware of the curry only night. Apparently it's the chef's night off and the owners wife cooks on a Tue and she only cooks curry, which is fair enough but really should be on the website. My husband was really happy with his curry and I could appreciate that the food was good if you like that sort of food, but I was so disappointed as the rest of the menu sounded amazing. Oh well - if we are in the area again (not on a Tue) we might get a chance to sample something else.......

Wednesday pie & pint night Waited an hour after ordering 2 pies. Only 4 other people ordered. No one apologised or informed us of the delay - even though we asked 2 staff (when we eventually found them). Bar was like Mary Celeste! No staff to be found. Not at all busy. One chef unable to cope with 6 pre cooked pie meals. I’m not surprised! Left & went to Steves at Etwall instead & had lovely pie & chips as always. Won’t go back to Hawk again & wouldn’t recommend. Two visits in the last week and tonight will be my last. Service on our first visit was slow, the beer was poor and nibbles were largely unavailable. However, tonight was frankly scary. The staff, while plentiful, seemed completely oblivious to current safeguarding measures. Having sat down, I had to approach the bar after a full ten minutes to request attention. In the meantime, groups of teenagers were congregating at the bar WITHOUT masks to purchase drinks. Our friends, who arrived a little later, likewise had to wait an inordinate length of time to even order and then had to chase up the order several minutes later. Meanwhile, further groups were allowed to approach the bar and be served, extending our waiting time. Sorry, but we won't be back.

We ventured out for the first time after Covid Lockdown to a pub in our village to eat and were delighted they could accommodate our extended family of 6 to have a meal and drinks and were so looking forward to it...... We arrived and were cold and asked if they could put the patio heaters on, they said they couldn’t until7pm as it wasn’t in their expenditure! ?? as they had already sober £400 on heating this month! so the customer should suffer Anyway 1 hour to get starters, I asked what the soup of the day was,,vegetable or pea I was told. so I chose vegetable An hour later the starters arrived and my soup, it was cold and I tried it and it was Pea! so I asked for a hot bowl of vegetable to get pea soup hot! To be told it’s pea only today!! The mains arrived My Ribeye steak arrived It was a red blood sirloin with no sauce etc The waiter said it doesn’t come with a sauce it’s a limited menu! The next waiter said it does come with a sauce of your choice and we can cook it for you again,,,,, how would you like it cooked!? Shouldn’t you have asked me that when you take the order! So I didn’t eat any courses.... Overpriced rubbish food and v expensive Staff don’t know the menu The food was below standard of a cheap pub My son and I left and ate at home,, Shocking!!!!!!! A right balls up of service and food

After a chance visit over the weekend and chatting to the lovely landlady we booked in for their curry night tonight. It was amazing 👏. All cooked from scratch, as far as we were concerned it was faultless. 2 coeliacs were catered for with gluten free options and we were given a sample different starter to try just for our feedback. Poppadoms, lamb samosas, tandoori chicken starters all vanished followed by chicken tikka, authentic lamb curry and authentic chicken curry with naan bread. We're also booked in to try their Sunday roast!

We've eaten out in several places since lockdown restrictions were lifted, and felt more vulnerable here than anywhere we've been, tables far too close to each other. Was asked on entering if we wanted drinks and so we asked for wine list, told they don't have one. Waiter came to our table and asked whether we wanted white, red or rose, when we said white he replied we've got Sauvignon Blanc, a Chilean or New Zealand, but no indication of price. My husband asked what the price difference was and the reply was "about £4 quid". Would be funny if it wasn't so unprofessional, never been expected to order wine with no indication of what we would be paying. It was only when we settled the bill that we knew the price was £18 for the cheaper Chilean option. Also unprofessional was when looking beforehand on the website for menu selection, message comes up saying menu being updated so no idea what food/prices are. This "being updated " message has been on the website for at least three weeks. Food took just short of an hour from being ordered to arriving at table, far too long imo. No comparison between the Hawk and Buckle and it's excellent sister restaurant The Roebuck at Draycott in the Clay

We booked ahead as advised, at an outside table, for the gig on Friday evening (excellent music, by the way). However, when we arrived we were appalled to have to find our way through a crowd of men standing at the bar (which is currently illegal) in order to get through to the outside seating. There was no semblance of social distancing in the bar. Once outside things improved, tables were well spaced and we felt reasonably safe, although a lot of other people were mingling at other tables without much evidence of social distancing. There was a signposted one-way system which appeared to be ignored by customers and staff alike. I had to go into the bar twice more, once to order drinks, and finally to leave at the end of the night. Both times there were lots of drinkers standing around the room talking, in contravention of the government requirement that pubgoers indoors must be seated at socially-distanced tables. At no time did we see any staff attempt to enforce any of the social-distancing requirements, apart from signing-in when we first arrived. None of the staff wore masks despite coming up really close and talking loudly to customers at the tables while the music was playing This disregard for Covid-19 rules not only left us feeling distinctly unsafe, but also puts the whole community at risk of an upsurge in cases. We will not be going back.

Popped into the Hawke a week ago for a cheeky drink having not visited for a couple of years as I thought it had gone downhill rather . First thing I noticed was the new decor which really is lovely, then I noticed how warm and welcoming the dining room looked , and then thirdly how friendly and welcoming the new landlord and his staff are. Decided it was well worth another visit to try the food so I booked the family in (ranging in age from 7 to 84) the youngest and the oldest members are always difficult to please . Very warm welcome on arrival and promptly shown to our lovely laid out table. Orders for drinks taken swiftly and that’s when the problem started ...... such a fantastic choice on the menu it took us all bloody ages to decide ! I could have gladly chosen anything as all the choices looked so appetising. All six of us chose differently and we all agreed we would have gladly rotated the plates around as everyone’s looked and tasted delicious . The portions were very much on the generous side, and the selection of vegetables ,cooked perfectly, complimented the dishes well. This visit certainly won’t be our last , I have had far inferior Sunday lunches and paid far more than the Hawke charges ,so here’s to the new look , newly taken over Hawke and Buckle , long may it last

They didn't ask us to pre-order. There were 14 of us, seated at 2 tables - a table of 10 and a table of 4, which wasn't ideal. We had to wait over an hour for the main course, then over half an hour for dessert. The food was lovely and well-presented when it eventually arrived. If we go again, I think we should pre-order and also ask for the table layout to be different, so that we can all sit together.

Booked a table for 5 people. Turned up could smell a damp/mildew stench. Asked for drinks, nothing on tap only bottled. Sat at table and said to the wife that I can't eat in here with that smell. It was cold in there aswell. Four others were sat at their table with big coats on. Phoned the brother-in-law from outside to tell him we'll go somewhere else. Went back in to the wife and drinks had come. I necked my pint and the wife left a watered down pint of cider. Asked barman how much I owed for the drinks. He said shall we call it a tenner, I gave him it and said we won't be stopping to eat because the smell was overwhelming. He said the roof near the kitchen had collapsed months ago which is probably the cause of the smell. Such a shame as this pub grub used to be great. The decor bought back memories as it was the same years ago. The pub needs gutting. I wouldn't use it to keep cows in, in its current state. Andy
