The Railway Inn in South Derbyshire

Been meaning to put on a review as I’ve been a couple of times previously for the karaoke night, but I went last night to celebrate my Birthday (which is today). Had a nice meal, all bar staff are friendly but Jamie the landlord always makes an effort to know his regulars. He recognised that it was my Birthday weekend after we had mentioned it to bar staff & gave me a mention at midnight as I went to sing my last song. When you go up to sing he remembers your name which is a nice touch, he’s always chatty. My friend won the £10 bar tab in the raffle, it’s a great idea to draw people in for a sing song. At the end he even said that I could go back for dinner & it would be on him for my Birthday. I had already made plans to go out for a meal today, but it was such a lovely thing to say. Thanks for a great night out & I’ll be back ASAP, hopefully in next few weeks. Emma

Went for Sunday lunch. Excellent Roast dinner. Good value. Staff were very good. The landlord and landlady, Jamie and Jenny were great hosts. We will be back.

Went to meet family for carvery lunch. Food wasn't brilliant, some burnt, mostly cold. However the next day 3 out of the 5 of us came down with food poisoning. From different areas and this was the only thing in common. Took a week to get over it. Never go again.

Went to the try the new menu and oh my goodness! Affordable and tasty, and I’ve got to say the pie was the best I’ve tried in Derbyshire or even anywhere😁 Kids loved the farm animals, we got to join in on Bingo and we’ve booked in for carvery next week which customers raved about to us.

It’s a nice pub, great atmosphere and also dog friendly which fits brilliantly when i want to take my dog. i went for a carvery and it was beautiful, the roasties were made to perfection and the turkey is my personal favourite. would definitely return here!

Awful from start to finish. 1. drinks order wrong. 2. carvery on cold plates food was only just warm. 3. yorkshire puddings and pigs in blankets burnt. 4. stuffing like bullets. 5. parsnips and carrots too hard to even cut with a knife. 6. only thing nice was dessert. Suffice to say will not be going again!

My wife , myself and my Granddaughter had lunch at the Railway today. The food was amazing. Home made Curry 10/10. Fish and Chips, best I have had for ages and plenty of it. Burger and fries according to our Granddaughter, look out McD. Highly recommended for anyone to try. Don’t expect Five Star restaurant just xpect good honest value for money food.

Went for a carvery today don’t know why I haven’t been here in years everything delicious and staff are very friendly and attentive to any of your needs and omg there chocolate brownie and ice cream to die for love and will definitely be back also very good prices the large plate will blow your mind

Hi, went for a carvery for the first time, thought we’d try pubs on our doorstep, it didn’t disappoint, food and service was excellent, it was the best pub carvery I’ve been too, it’s a friendly family pub of which we will definitely be going back 😀

This place serves the best Sunday lunch! Really well cooked choice of meats and a wide selection of vegetables on the carvery. Fab roasties! Warm welcome and family friendly, desserts tempting but too full to try one. Maybe next time! We will be back. Great value as well.

We came for the pub’s quiz night, had some great pints and had an amazing time. Atmosphere was amazing and landlord and landlady were excellent hosts. Will be returning!

Lovely pub, friendly staff and pub dogs, great garden with a play area and some chickens, ducks and rabbits so brilliant for the kids too! Lovely fresh food and very affordable! Also hold great bank holiday events with live music and games! Perfect place to pop into with the kids!

What a little gem. Had a get together with some friends and couldn't fault The Railway. The Sunday carvery was simply excellent, fresh, plenty of choice and really good value for money. The dining room / function room is bright and airy and opens onto the beer garden which has been lovingly refurbished, complete with children's play area, chickens and ducks. Great pint of Pedigree, kept well by the landlord and the whole team worked hard all afternoon to make our visit memorable. Highly recommended, we will be back.

Absolutely fantastic service and food. First time visiting, a large group of us went today who was involved with the band that was put on. The Sunday carvery was absolutely lovely! Cooked to perfection and the selection of sides were just as good. Service was brilliant and served with a smile. The kids loved the outdoor play area and the animals they have here... and the adults aswell! Would highly recommend to everyone. A** Will be back very soon! Thankyou once again

Excellent Sunday carvery - good choice of meats and vegetables. Beef was delicious. Very much enjoyed Belgian waffle with ice cream for desert. Extremely good value for money too. Had chance to stay for Sunday afternoon live music in the other room. One of the best afternoons I’ve had in a while. Landlady and landlord were amazing - nothing was too much trouble. Me and my boys love coming here! Fantastic entertainment, beautiful food, great atmosphere and the owners and thier dogs are brilliant. My children have autism and they never feel uncomfortable and love the food and music. A great venue, highly recommended and the food and entertainment is second to nine! Rather unassuming from the outside, nicely decorated on the inside. The barman (Scott I think was his name) was very chatty, recommended the carbonate dirty fries to me (not something I would have chosen!) They were amazing! Also 2 lovely dogs that clearly love living...

Poor hygiene when it comes to serving the carvery, the menu isn't much better, they allow the dog to roam around the restaurant, safe to say our group won't be returning,

The food is fantastic! So much flavour in everything. The staff are lovely and so friendly. My daughter especially loved seeing their dogs in the main pub part, she was obsessed. Overall a perfect Sunday afternoon here!

Food was excellent! Ordered a Newyorker burger and it was one of the best burgers I've had! 100% recomend for people to give it a try. You won't regret it!

What a lovely little pub!! Visited here numerous times since the new owners have been here, always made to feel very welcome by all staff. The food is amazing! I’ve eaten here on most occasions I’ve visited and can not fault a single thing. Fresh, Homemade food at reasonable prices- I recommend to everyone to try it! Loads of things going on in the pub too- comedy nights, live singers, karaoke, bingo but still got that “ quiet local pub” feel too. I’m yet to try their new Sunday Carvery as they were fully booked but it looks lush! Must book in ASAP! Well done to The Railway- keep going with what you’re doing!

We visited this pub twice in May for Sunday lunch. The first time, the food was edible but portions were small, the veg was frozen not fresh, as were the Yorkshire puddings. You had to hunt for the meat on the plate - 2 small pieces - and it was a long time coming. We gave our comments about the meat to the waitress, who replied that others had said the same. This would be looked at and would not happen again. Because we were emerging out of lockdown and wanting to support local business, we booked again for the next week. it was not much better. if we had not paid upfront for the meal, we would have walked out. You can get a better pub meals locally, at just over half the price of this meal. We have never been back.

Today 19th August 2021, my wife and family took me to the Railway Inn at Swadlincote for a birthday celebration.They had pre ordered Lobsters and Fillet Steak.The meal was amazing. The starters, main courses and sweets were all expertly cooked and presented by the most excellent Chef I have come across in this area for a long time. The service was to say the least first class. Nothing was to much trouble and our every request, some of which were different to say the least were fulfilled happily .Steve, Jamie and each and everyone of the Staff at the Railway are all amazing. The Chef and kitchen staff, exceptional. They are genuinely committed to making sure that your visit, celebration or any other function are both enjoyable and memorable.We genuinely recommend this establishment to all who need a venue for any celebration or function.Thank you all of you at the Railway, you were all amazing. The team at The Railway Inn were very friendly and considerate in putting on a range of cakes alongside tea and coffee for a family & friends gathering following a funeral. We could not have been looked after better - thank you so much to the team at The Railway Inn.

If you want restaurant quality food then go to a restaurant! This place serves basic home cooked food at bar prices. We stopped here after a day out as we had heard it did reasonable and so we thought we'd give it a try. Staff are very friendly in a genuine, not forced, way.We had the chicken tikka masala curry and the portabello chicken. Food was delivered in an acceptable amount of time.Chicken curry portion was a little on the small side, could have done with a little more chicken, was a little watery, but was actually quite tasty.The chicken for the portabello chicken had been grilled before adding to the sauce and had been over cooked do that the outside was quite tough. The chips could have definitely done with anout 3-4 minutes in the fryer as they weren't quite cooked. Surprised they were sent out to be honest as the one's not quite done were on the top and clearly needed a few extra minutes. Again however, the food and sauce were tasty.Bar food at bar prices. Would eat there again but wouldn't be high on my listOne strange thing is that you have to oder and pay for food, and order and pay for drinks as different orders as they are logged on different tills. Even with bar food, surprised wasn't a single tab to be paid on completion of the meal.

Popped in with family for a meal. Food was ok in general but took 50 minutes to arrive at the table after ordering. Only go if prepared to wait.

We called in at lunch time and expected a nice meal based on the reviews, how wrong could we be. My wife had the Ham off the bone salad, the ham was nice but the salad was just green leaves from a prepacked bag and it was very dry, she ate the ham and left the rest. I went for the Large fish and chips, the chips tasted like they had been reheated and were cold and chewy, the fish was awful, cooked from frozen, the fish was grey in colour and there was more batter than fish, this was only just warm. I ate about half of the fish and left the rest of the meal. The lad serving was very polite and offered us a free pudding which we declined. I definitely would not recommend the Railway to anyone, in fact I would say avoid the Railway

Very disappointed. One poor lady serving all night For a function and 4 others serving the main pub. The main pub was dead prob 20 people, I spoke to A lady and requested that someone come and help this woman and a lady called Joanne (the manager apparently) said she couldn’t leave the bar as she had a lad under 18 on the bar and he couldn’t serve. There was no one to serve ?? Or let one of the older ladies serve or they could go next door. Really poorly run and I am amazed that Marstons Let’s this owns this place. Outdated attitude to retail

Stopped in here for lunch, fabulous burger and fries, excellent value for money. Sat outside in lovely weather, thoroughly enjoyed it. Staff were helpful and pleasant, spotless toilets and plenty of parking. Did I mention I would recommend the burgers!!!

Reasonable menu, our food was not that special. I had sandwich bread was dry. Other half had a burger which he was not impressed with onion rings and wine was really nice. Saw food delivered to other tables which was presented well. Staff friendly and pleasent. Downside no card payments and separate bill for food and drink. Clean nd tidy but a bit dark.

I recently came to the Railway Inn for a meal with family after seeing reviews on here and was served by the nicest waitress. Megan (I asked her name) made sure we had everything we needed and went above and beyond much like some of the other staff members. Next time I am visiting Swadlincote I will be sure to visit

We’d spent the day at local ‘Conkers’ and wanted a meal before the hour journey home. This place had welcoming staff and we all had excellent meals.

Not far from home,passed numerous times and never visited. So today was the the day! A few locals in just drinking, which they were friendly enough. Quite an extensive menu,which took me by surprise, and reasonably priced. The food was average. Nothing special.

Have eaten here now several times and I have never had a bad meal yet even the finger buffet for two wakes and my granddaughters birthday party were brilliant loads to eat to please all palates, cannot fault them,highly recommend.

We booked for Friday steak night and the meal was excellent. 10oz Rump £5.95 or 20oz £9.95 served with peas salad and chips it’s not worth shopping and cooking at home at these prices . The wine is also reasonably priced it’s a very family orientated pub friendly staff

A return visit with large group for an event in the function room. Owner was very helpful in adjusting a meal to a gluten-free option, as well as some gluten-free choices on the standard menu. Good value , friendly and welcoming

Decided to go to the Railway for lunch after a recommendation from a friend. Certainly lives up to its excellent reputation. Good choice on the menu and also offering a good choice on the 2for £10 menu too. We went for the main menu as my husband fancied steak. I had fish and chips. The young man taking the order was pleasant and helpful and we enjoyed a drink while the food was prepared. The food was excellent and a very generous portion. The young man who served us checked that everything was ok which it was. Really couldn’t manage a pudding but the selection was good and they looked lovely. Thoroughly recommend for good food at a very reasonable price. Plenty of space in the car park and not far from the town centre if walking.

A delightful evening out. We went last night (4th Oct 17) Had meal of ale pie chips n peas beef chunks n plenty of them in pie with a lovely pastry topping, other dish was ham n eggs ham thickly cut and delicious. Highly recommend meals. The staff are pleasant n very welcoming. They also do a carvery and breakfast might have to try those out too.

We popped in here for a quick late lunch, and we will be going back for a relaxed full meal, we were very impressed, very friendly staff, clean pub and lovely tasty food. Glad we have found this lovely pub, can't wait to return.

We've eaten at the Railway a couple of times and not been dissapointed. The carvery is always well stocked with great choice and always well cooked and very tasty. The desserts are also delicious and normally there is a good selection to suit all tastes.

Yo no soy un gran fan de la Great British asado ya que prefiero la comida mediterránea o la India, pero mi esposa le encanta, así que pensamos que le daría una oportunidad al asador. Reservamos en el último minuto, pero la propietaria de tbh nos hablaba por teléfono era tan servicial y complaciente que ella nos metieron en sentados en el salón en vez de el restaurante. Todo lo que puedo decir es que todo estaba perfectamente preparado, opción de tres articulaciones carne, yorkshires, gran selección de verduras frescas, en salsa de relleno, que era un buen cambio, también cebolla salsa si lo desea. Realmente agradable, gran precio asados foe valor y hasta los precios del bar eran baratos. Bien me recomendó!

Teníamos un té funeral aquí la semana pasada, después de mi madre de funeral. El buffet era excelente. Una selección de canapés, ensaladas, sándwiches, quesos y fiambres, seguido de los escones con crema y mermelada. Había un montón de comida para nuestro gran grupo. Té y café disponibles y había un bar. El propietario aseguró que el aparcamiento estaba disponible para nuestro grupo funeral.

Reservamos una mesa para cuatro personas. A nuestra llegada, nos informó que se habían reservado en un grupo de 60, así que me dieron la opción de comer en el bar, ya que podría ser ruidoso en la noche. Todos ordenados y no espera mucho...

Very good menu, reasonable price, nothing to much trouble when waitress taking the order, looked after our every request for slight changes eg can I have veg instead of salad etc. The food was very very good in quantity and quality. Sweets and coffee also very good.

Had a funeral party here yesterday after my mothers funeral. The buffet was absolutely fantastic, gorgeous food, plenty of it, catered for everyones dietary needs and not just the normal run of the mill buffet food. Extensive variety and management and staff were extremely helpful. Could not fault it, I will definately visit again and next time in happier circumstances. Went last night for a friends Hen Party. Although the carvery is usually only served at lunchtimes on Sunday, the management put it on especially for our party on the evening. I must say it was the tastiest carvery I have had in a long time. The meat and vegetables were cooked to perfection and was lovely and hot. The price was £7.95 which I thought was well worth it. I must also point out that the staff were very welcoming and friendly. Check it out if you are in the area.

We travelled from warwick to visit our son and we went to this pub for a meal. The food was absolutely amazing.very tasty and all fresh NOT FROZEN . We had Sunday carvery. If your passing give it a try you would not be disappointed. The customer service was also very pleasant. A really good family atmosphere. I would definitely recommend this place and will return. We went to this pub/restaurant for a funeral party.It was rather sparse, but the food was lovely which surprised me to be honest.There was plenty of choice and it was nice and the atmosphere was lovely for saying what type of occasion it was.Can't fault the staff either, they were friendly, attentive and helpful - it was mid afternoon so there wasn't a lot of people around which made it easier for us all.The problem is this place doesn't know what its target market is and over the years we have lived here we have seen it change and evolve - it has been a Thai restaurant, it has had a "rave weekend", that was awful and we live nearly a mile away and were kept awake by the clientele and the music!It now offers meals and an "all you can east breakfast for £5.98".I can't say I have tried the food but if it was any thing like we had at the funeral wake I would say it is well worth the money, I don't frequent pubs very often and out of the 3 that were on this road (all within abut 1.5 miles of each other), this is the one that has remained open and I do put it down to the fact it is continually evolving to fit in with the area which has changed over the years and for the better.I think the pub will keep changing and I don't think that is a bad thing, whatever their plan is all I can say is it is working.

We have been a couple of times on a Friday for the steak night . I have to say the value for money is outstanding £5.95 for a 10oz rump steak and the steak is excellent. Good honest pub grub

First time we had a Sunday carvery here and we're quite dissappointed although the staff were all very friendly and the room was fine we found the carvery could have been better there was only 4 burned yorkshires up for grabs we found all the veg on offer was cold although a great selection a good variety of hot and cold desserts were on offer also at reasonable prices we'd certainly come back but personally next time I'd pick something off the main menu which is an alternative if you don't want the carvery

Even though we live close by never got around to visit, but glad we did. The food was well cooked a good sized portions and hot. Will definitely visit again

Came here for a baby shower. Cost us over £100 for a room which we only had for 2 1/2 hours. Why we was having our party they was setting up for a disco making noise! Think it was very rude when we paid for it. & food spread they put on was terrible very dry, not really ediable had a word with staff about it but wasnt bothered the slightes. Wouldnt go again.

Just been to the railway for lunch with my son and granddaughter I've lived in swad for 10 years and never been in here it was on recommendation from my neighbour and we certainly weren't disappointed with the food all freshly cooked to order large portions at very reasonable prices will be going back again very shortly

Myself and a few friends came to the railway for breakfast recently, we were all looking forward to it as we had heard great things, unfortunately we were disappointed. The all you can eat breakfast was ok, we had to order our fried eggs at the bar so they can be made fresh and brought over to our table. That's fine, however we never actually received our eggs that we ordered. Some of us also ordered mushrooms and hash browns for an extra 50p each, when they finally came to our table (and we had almost finished our breakfast) I couldn't believe what we had gotten, it could only be discribed as one average size mushroom cut and had looked like they had been deep fried. The mushrooms were all rubbery and when squished with a fork oozed oil. I'm still getting over the fact I paid 50p for one mushroom.. Someone call the police, I've just been robbed

Arrived about 2.30 (mid service on a Sunday) on 10/4/16, there were approx 12 other diners. Food looked OK and the desserts appeared well presented. We chose our meat and veg from the carvery and took to table but we're very disappointed when we started to eat. None of the vegetables were hot, barely warm at best and the meat was also just warm. The meal was served onto cold plates which didn't help. Didn't get asked if our meal was satisfactory and were not offered drinks refills or deserts. Overall very disappointed. String was left on the pork joint and served to plate with the meat.

Wow what a great meal and fab value for money. A 10 ounce Rump served with chips which are gorgeous salad and peas for £5.95 extras are £1.50 each I had stilton sauce, but you can choose from onion rings, garlic mushrooms, cheese and bacon, peppercorn sauce or fried eggs. I ordered a bottle of house red wine which was light and fruity which was an amazing £7.25 . Will definitely go back especially midweek for tea it's not worth cooking at home as they do 2 for £10 from 12 til 5pm.

worst carvery or meal our family have had out ever all the food was just edible if you were hungery but it was cold , cream cake sweet was kept under a heat lamp disgusting

well decided to try the steak night advertised ...on entering very busy with just people having a drink and tables eating.....went to the bar and this was the only dissapointment of our visit...of all nights to put on 2 trainee bar staff who to be honest hadnt a bloody clue what they were supposed to be doing think theyd be better of in retail !however eventually got drinks and food...the steak was amazing value for money and at just under £6 each definatly worth a visit

rang up before walking to the railway inn for a table for 4 got our drinks @ the bar then sat @ the table & we all picked carvery which looked ok! we went up to the carvery & were served quickly but on tasting it back @ the table the meat was luke warm , sprouts and cauli were cold . it wasnt very good . then i ordered treacle sponge & custard which was ok ! but my daughter ordered the chocolate layer cake off the bar which came & had been sat on the bar a long time under a heat lamp & the cream was off so she was unable to eat it we did mension this when i paid the bill but just got sorry ! never again my wife & daughters said on the way home

My first visit to the Railway Inn was to attend a buffet they had prepared, for a large number of mourners following a local funeral.The quality and quantity of food they had provided was outstanding as was the variety, many of the other mourners were making similar comments too. I was able to make a direct comparison with the buffet provided following my mothers funeral twelve months ago, that food was prepared by another well known establishment on the main Ashby Road approximately two miles away towards Burton, a venue regularly used by the Burton Co-op Funeral Company.Not only was that buffet more than twice the cost per head compared to the Railway Inn, and certainly had neither the variety or anywhere near the quantity of food.I would suggest the staff of that establishment pay a visit to the Railway Inn to learn how to provide a proper buffet at a reasonable cost.

I attended this pub this week having selected it for a wake following my wife's funeral. I cannot praise the staff and the standard of the buffet high enough.The amount of food put out for us was more than enough for the 60 people who attended. The selection was second to none and all was fresh and tasty. I have attended functions at various places in the local area but the Railway was superb by comparison.There breakfast is good value for money also.

Visited the railway twice in the last couple weeks was recommended for breakfast and it really was very good, decided to try the bingo night, lovely people, nice decor had a good time and won as well, thank you jay for making us so welcome

Came here one evening to eat and was disgusted to see who I assume is the new landlady, propped up behind the bar, not even taking any notice of what customers were walking in and not even lifting her head to smile or even my eye contact and one member of staff doing all the running around by herself!Sat down with our drinks and after having a good look around, decided to not even order.Yes we could see it is a family welcoming pub which yes I agree with but not with the fact kids were running riot and a few feet away from where children were was a group of men swearing like mad and nothing said about it!!Finished our drinks and left!!Would never bring my son here!!

Having visited earlier in the week for one of their special lunches I booked in for the Sunday Carvery with friends. We were greeted by Jay and shown to our seats and after ordering our food and drinks at the bar we went to the carvery station. What an amazing choice of veg to go with the meats on offer. What we did like was that it was hot and we didn't have to wait for any of the veg to be replaced. Well done to everyone for making our lunch an enjoyable one and we will be returning to the Railway.
